The Door Opens - Update: The Door Closes

Open • Views: 2,353

Here’s a midday open thread, with open registration for a limited time. The ‘Register’ link is at the top of the left sidebar.

Read all the rules before you register, and commit them to memory. The short version:

  • Don’t register with a proxy.
  • Don’t register with a throwaway email address.
  • Don’t register more than one account at a time.
  • Don’t be a jerk.
  • Don’t be a troll.
  • Don’t be a sock puppet. Stinky hates sock puppets. He will find you.
  • If you’re registering just to post a dramatic “goodbye cruel world” comment full of insults and drool, don’t waste your time. Nobody’s going to read it. It will be immediately deleted and your account will be blocked.
  • Do play nice.

And then everything will be groovy.

UPDATE at 10/8/09 2:12:44 pm:

The door has creaked shut for another day.

Like many other Western countries, France requires health warnings on tobacco and alcohol and similar labels on processed food containing genetically modified ingredients. France's regulators are also notoriously tough on marketing campaigns that make false product claims. Now some French legislators want to take consumer protection to an unprecedented level, requiring that advertisements, product labels and even campaign posters carry a warning when they feature a photograph that's been digitally enhanced.

The drive against airbrushed photos is being headed by conservative parliamentarian ValÉrie Boyer, who says the widespread use of digital technology to alter images is feeding the public a steady visual diet of falsified people, places and products. This artificial reality leads people to expect perfection from themselves and the world in an impossible way, she says. "When writers take a news item or real event and considerably embellish it, they are required to alert readers by calling the work fiction, a novel or a story based on dramatized facts. Why should it be any different for photographs?" Boyer asks. "Rules on food labeling let consumers know the origins of the contents and the presence of things like additives and preservatives. What's wrong with ... informing them when photographs have also been modified from their original form?"

SNIP

Boyer's effort is not motivated only by a fear that consumers are being taken for a ride. She also feels that the idealized beauty in such photos is giving people false expectations of how the world should look — and how they should look as well. Because digitally enhanced photos are often used in mass-marketing campaigns for everything from soft drinks to luxury cars to travel packages, Boyer says the images are gradually leading to a standardization of what is considered beautiful — and by extension, what isn't.

re: #2 Sharmuta

Hi LGF. I registered here a while back but I seldom have much time for commenting. As it's a new registrant thread (and I clearly missed posting in the one made when I joined) I thought I might take this chance to say introduce myself.

To say how I found LGF - I can't recall the exact place anymore to be honest. I know I got linked here by someone that was mad about something Charles said. I also recall them stating that the blog was "anti-Islamic" and "crazy right wing" or some such nonsense. I've not really seen any of that here. I'm not terribly interested in anyone's political leanings anyway. I stayed and eventually registered because I genuinely enjoy reading the content and opinions posted here. I don't agree with everything but most commenters here seem to have the capability of rational discussion.

That said, it's nice to meet you all and I hope to take a more active role in threads moving forward.

Ciao!

Sort of on this same thought. Back in 2001, there was a safe sex campaign going on in France. It was this "cute" little condom graphically enhanced to have little "stick" hands and little eyes.

They situated the character in different little settings and situations, which evidently indicated that in these little amorous encounters, a condom would be a good idea.

There was no text, no French, all graphic, so it could be understood by many different language speakers and people of all level of education.

I collected a whole series of these public service "cartoons," by cutting them off of all the packs of cigarettes I was buying in Paris.

An aside, the anti-smoking messages on the French cigarette packs left nothing to the imagination in regards to how you would basically die if you smoke.

Mirroring the same kind of attitude of the left in Congress, where 90+ Democrats want essentially the same thing - they want an exit strategy.

The rationale for the left and the right differ. The right sees the failure of the left to act responsibly and doesn't want to put more troops in harm's way, while the left sees the whole war in Afghanistan as misguided.

The end result is the same; a crap sandwich where politics trumps rational national security demands.

Maybe. I would like to see a similar law here in this country for airbrushed or digitally enhanced celebrity photos. Imagine how much better ordinary people would feel if every single image of Heidi Klum or Tom Cruise carried a little advisory that "this image does not accurately depict a real person"!

Good idea, we can start with your avatar.

122 Xenobyte  Thu, Oct 8, 2009 1:34:30pm

It's been a while since I joined and I never got around to introduce myself back then so here goes... A few words about how I came here.

I found LGF in connection with the fauxtography scandal where the badly photoshopped pictures showed up in newspapers (as the real thing) and I just had to find out how people could be so clueless. Found out about Al-Reuters, Green Helmet Guy and the rest of the menagerie - and decided to join. Now, this right now is actually the first time I've stumbled across an open door here... Back when I wanted to join I always missed the open doors (usually happened in the middle of the night here in Denmark) so I whipped up a small script that once every minute checked to see if the "closed" still appeared on the front page, and if was gone it sent me a text. Just 3 days later at 3:30am the door opened... the text arrived and I got up and signed up. The rest is history... ;)

Anyway, lots of other stuff to talk about... Welcome to the new hatchlings! - Please behave and play nice... More fun that way!

IPT Report Documents Viva Palestina's Hamas Support

In the U.S. and England, organizers are laying the groundwork for a convoy of relief aid destined for Gaza. It would be the third such venture by a group calling itself Viva Palestina.

Its two previous trips saw the group deliver medical supplies, ambulances and other goods. They also included meetings with senior Hamas officials. In March, Viva Palestina's leader, British MP George Galloway, defiantly handed a bag of cash directly to a Hamas minister (click here to see the video from the Middle East Media Research Institute):

"I, personally, am about to break the sanctions on the elected government of Palestine. By Allah, we carried a lot of cash here. You thought we were all fat. We are not fat. This is money that we have around our waists ... We are giving you now 100 vehicles and all of the contents. And we make no apology for what I am about to say: We are giving them to the elected government of Palestine; to the Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh."

Galloway was a little more circumspect on the second trip to Gaza in July. There was no public ceremony showing the donations. A group of Viva Palestina convoy participants did meet with Haniyeh, however, who praised them "as heroes; you are opening the eyes of the world to the siege in the Strip."

The Investigative Project on Terrorism has found ample evidence that Viva Palestina's ultimate objective is political – with the elevation of Hamas at its core. How can we be so sure?

It is irony. They claim not to ban people who comment there, yet there are several instances of just that. They ban people who comment there and do the following,

1. Call them out for the lame asshole douchebags they are.
2. Defend Charles and LGF.

Otherwise, one can be as big an asshole as one wants without being banned.

You, my dear, spend way to much time stalking the stalkers!

Polanski Supporter Frederic Mitterand Is a Pedophile Too

When Roman Polanski was arrested, none was more critical than French Culture Minister Frederic Mitterrand:

Mitterrand said, “To see him like that, thrown to the lions because of ancient history, really doesn’t make any sense.”

Mitterrand continued with a jab against the United States: “In the same way that there is a generous America that we like, there is also a scary America that has just shown its face.”

Now it’s clear why: Mitterand is also a pedophile:

France’s new culture minister, Frédéric Mitterrand, who has defended the filmmaker Roman Polanski against extradition charges for statutory rape, was attacked on Wednesday for his admission in a 2005 autobiography, “The Bad Life,” that he “got into the habit” of paying “young boys” for sex in Southeast Asia despite “the sordid details of this traffic.”

And enjoyed it tremendously:

All these rituals of the market for youths, the slave market excited me enormously … the abundance of very attractive and immediately available young boys put me in a state of desire.

There is a scary Mitterand that has just shown his face.

And you thought it was telling that Woody Allen supported Polanski.

With friends like these . . .

Wake up! Here's a 7-8th grade math problem. Order the following 3 numbers from lowest to highest. Show working. Do not use a calculator.

1. 3^34
2. 15!
3. 2^51

For the uninitiated, a^b means a raised to the power of b. 15! is 15x14x13x12x...x3x2x1, but you knew that.

You cant take three from two,
Two is less than three,
So you look at the four in the tens place.
Now thats really four tens,
So you make it three tens,
Regroup, and you change a ten to ten ones,
And you add them to the two and get twelve,
And you take away three, thats nine.
Is that clear?

Now instead of four in the tens place
You've got three,
cause you added one,
That is to say, ten, to the two,
But you cant take seven from three,
So you look in the hundreds place.

From the three you then use one
To make ten ones...
(and you know why four plus minus one
Plus ten is fourteen minus one?
cause addition is commutative, right.)
And so you have thirteen tens,
And you take away seven,
And that leaves five...

Well, six actually.
But the idea is the important thing.

Now go back to the hundreds place,
And you're left with two.
And you take away one from two,
And that leaves...?

Everybody get one?
Not bad for the first day!

Hooray for new math,
New-hoo-hoo-math,
It wont do you a bit of good to review math.
Its so simple,
So very simple,
That only a child can do it!
Now that actually is not the answer that I had in mind, because the book that I got this problem out of wants you to do it in base eight. but don't panic.
Base eight is just like base ten really
If you're missing two fingers. shall we have a go at it? hang on.

You cant take three from two,
Two is less than three,
So you look at the four in the eights place.
Now thats really four eights,
So you make it three eights,
Regroup, and you change an eight to eight ones,
And you add them to the two,
And you get one-two base eight,
Which is ten base ten,
And you take away three, thats seven.

Now instead of four in the eights place
You've got three,
cause you added one,
That is to say, eight, to the two,
But you cant take seven from three,
So you look at the sixty-fours.

Sixty-four? how did sixty-four get into it? I hear you cry.
Well, sixty-four is eight squared, don't you see?
(well, you ask a silly question, and you get a silly answer.)

From the three you then use one
To make eight ones,
And you add those ones to the three,
And you get one-three base eight,
Or, in other words,
In base ten you have eleven,
And you take away seven,
And seven from eleven is four.
Now go back to the sixty-fours,
And youre left with two,
And you take away one from two,
And that leaves...?

Now, lets not always see the same hands.
One, thats right!
Whoever got one can stay after the show and clean the erasers.

Hooray for new math,
New-hoo-hoo-math,
It wont do you a bit of good to review math.
Its so simple,
So very simple,
That only a child can do it!

Come back tomorrow night. were gonna do fractions.
Now Ive often thought Id like to write a mathematics text book because I have a title that I know will sell a million copies. Ill call it tropic of calculus.

But with Iran close to getting the bomb, it is getting close to failure.

Of course, what prevented WWIII so far has been the rationality of the Soviet leadership, at least in the sense that they realized they wouldn't want to rule over a radioactive wasteland, and MAD.
I don't think this works for Iran.

Hey everyone, I joined a little while ago, but never made a formal introduction of myself, so I figure now is a good time. I found LGF through memeorandum and read through for a while, but always found the registration section to be closed. Once I managed to register, I jumped in with both feet, made a fool of myself, and learned quickly that if you can't back what you say in here, you'll get blasted. :)

Now for stuff you probably could care less about ;)

Personally, I live near Atlanta, I'm Libertarian in bent and voted that way in every election I've been able to. Musically I'm all over the map, ranging from Ludovico Einaudi to Dimmu Borgir, from Gwar to Android Lust.

Mostly I'm happy get to talk to people who don't strike me as bat shit crazy. ;)

Thank you Charles for letting me stick around and thanks to the rest of you for giving me a chance to join in the conversation from time to time.

I've been reading and posting here since 2002, been registered since...(clicks own avatar) 2004. Like so many others, I was drawn here in the wake of 9/11. I was livid at the jihadists. I felt myself to be part of a community of righteous rage here. Some of the most intemperate things I've ever said in my adult life are floating right here in LGF's archives. Dig them up and fling them in my face, and I don't know that I would honestly disavow all of them.

But so many warblogs from that era have transmogrified or are simply gone. Life has gone on (thanks to our soldiers), different issues have come to the fore, and I'm content to read, listen, & engage with the more liberal-leaning newcomers. Welcome, all.

re: #266 Kosh's Shadow

But with Iran close to getting the bomb, it is getting close to failure.

Of course, what prevented WWIII so far has been the rationality of the Soviet leadership, at least in the sense that they realized they wouldn't want to rule over a radioactive wasteland, and MAD.
I don't think this works for Iran.

Perhaps. We must wait to see if the election incident has had lasting repercussions. But, as I said, anyone who thinks we should pull out of the UN, and thus the IMO, is a fool.

What do I mean? I mean that I have registered a new name each and every open Selrahc has had the past month and he has yet to ban any of them. Too funny really.

A few things come to mind:

1) I don't understand what is being caught by the sock puppet watch dogs on LGF. Can my wife register under her name from our shared machine? Not that she will, she would lose the opportunity to give me the hair eyeball and say "have you protected the interwebs sufficiently tonight?"

2) At least his guy claims the watch dog is not complete (which is hopefully give the benefit of doubt on registrations and limit the false positives to zero) and somewhat easy to elude, well then: what the heck that mean for the 10% of registrations (or so) that can't dance around this simple trap?

3) rejection is a powerful thing.

Or a good set theory one (15%P%3) which is 15 choose combinations of 3, which is 15! divided by 3!.

Sorry it it's been posted already.

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama is prepared to accept some Taliban involvement in Afghanistan's political future and appears inclined to send only as many more U.S. troops as needed to keep al-Qaida at bay, a senior administration official said Thursday.

That's a very frustrating story. But unfortunately, the Taliban are not something any military force will ever be able to defeat -- they're an outgrowth of a very deeply ingrained religion among Afghans. The only thing that will ever put an end to that kind of Dark Ages ideology is education and modernization. Can't be done with force.

Huh? How so? Her, and the rightwingnuts in general, 'criticism' gloating of the Olympic bid loss was ridiculous.

Did we read the same blog post? She said Chicago could ill afford to be spending money on Olypmic-quality facilities when it had so many other problems to take care of first. That sounds like good sense to me.

But then, I don't follow her blog and writings on a daily basis. I suspect there's a long history of mouth-frothing at work here I'm unaware of.

That's a very frustrating story. The only thing that will ever put an end to that kind of Dark Ages ideology is education and modernization. Can't be done with force.

Precisely.

And ... the differentiation between Taliban and al Qaida has grown less and less over the past couple of years. (per Long War Journal) al Q's Shadow Army is considered the elite by the Taliban, and membership in it is a sought-after honor.

While you are correct that at some point we will need to make peace with some form of the leftover Taliban, this is hudna by my read. The Afghan Taliban sent a signal a couple days back on this, basically saying that they have no interests outside of Afghanistan for terror. We know that's bullshit until they hand over Omar, Bin Laden, Zawahiri and the rest of the AQ shura council. Now if that were to happen, sure, let's make peace.

And ot complete the thought, that is precisely what the Taleban are combating - modernization. They don't care whether it is being introduced by Americans. Russians, or Eskimos. POTUS has to decide where the line is to be drawn between our national interests and "nation building" (in quotes because honestly, I have no idea what the heck that really means).

Whenever I see that on the printed page, I make sure my glasses are clean, and if they are, I close the book and step away.

My brother in law was getting his phd in physics years ago looking for sub-atomic particles that take tens of years to find by monitoring a dark room underground for decades. He printed out a standard report on an old printer where the ribbon accidentally touched the printout. He showed it to his advisor saying "no results yet". His advisor freaked out and started jumping around excited. He thought the ink smudge was evidence of positive results. My brother in law had to spend the next 30 minutes explaining to him the intricacies and lifecycle of ribbon-based printers--the whole time the professor treating him with skepticism.

Science is all about repeatability. Imagine having a false positive on something that's not likely to be replicated in half a lifetime.

A mob set upon them and chased them down an alleyway and were about to fall upon them when the folk at the head of the mob noticed that the nuns' habits had long, heavy-looking sleeves. (The nuns used to keep their breviaries and other stuff in their sleeves, for safe keeping.)

Well, to a chinese street-fighter of the period, a sleeve that was long and hung like that meant that its wearer was an accomplished martial artist, armed for the melee. ("weighted sleeves" was an old trick - make your sleeves about 6 or more inches longer than your arms, and weight the cuffs with pieces of iron. throw a punch that can kill). Nuns raised their hands in prayer for deliverance, and the mob scattered in terror.

The right wing has gone insane. That's what's happening.

The right wing has not gone insane, they have simply kept on marching in a straight line towards the extreme wing of Republican philosophy. In other words, this is not some sort of evolution, it is a result of conscious choice and managerial fiat in the face of extremely active conservative religious political groupings. The primary votes available from the religious hyper-right are an irresistible magnet to the bulk of party conservatives. Unfortunately, their idea of a course correction is to inject their own peculiar brand of insanity into public discourse in an attempt to discredit the President and Democrats, rather than rationally criticize their nonsensical policies. Because that would be too much work and assume that they trust the American public to think instead of act out of affect.

Ugh.

Until this law is struck down, I would encourage patients to lie. Through their teeth. I'd like to see that website packed with 73 year old Tuvaluvans. They may be able to coerce doctors to collect and report such information - for a while - but they can't force the patients to be accurate.

What's the purpose of the Drudge Report showing a title of 'DRUDGE REPORT 2010(R)'? Does he go by the federal fiscal year or something?

The currency story was promoted by his site and Fox; thinly sourced. I would hope that someone from the FTC is looking at any collusion to 'force' the market.

Thinly sourced? The source was Robert Fisk at the Independent. Whether Fisk was right or wrong, wouldn't he be considered a major source? Maybe I'm wrong.

Before everyone goes off the deep end about the OK abortion reporting laws please keep in mind that many states already report by county, and that these stats are useful. We used some of them in many threads combating the agitprop of abortion terrorist supporter's bogus claims as to how many abortions Dr. Tiller had performed.

Here's the typical clinic reporting form(this one from 1998,) and many of the "bulk stats by county" are available online.

The telling point is how contemporaneous with the abortion does the stat need to be made public? Anyone know? If it's like next day, that's obviously wrong, once a quarter, once a year?

Social conservatives gone wild:

What are they nuts? That's insanity.

A new Oklahoma law requires physicians to disclose detailed information on women's abortions to the State's Department Of Health, which will then post the collected data on a public website. The controversial measure comes into effect on November 1 and will cost $281,285 to implement, $256,285 each subsequent year to maintain.

Oklahoma women undergoing abortion procedures will be legally forced to reveal:

1) Date of abortion
2) County in which abortion is performed
3) Age of mother
4) Marital status of mother
5) Race of mother
6) Years of education of mother
7) State or foreign country of residence of mother
8) Total number of previous pregnancies of the mother

I agree, until this law is struck down (which it will be), doctors and patients should be doing everything to find a way around it.

But at least now more people see the truly hideous, hypocritical, spiteful and mean spirited face of that movement.

Yes, but apparently Fisk didn't source what he reported.

Check this out:

Politico: Whodunit?

Fisk’s story itself isn’t much help in solving the mystery — it is sourced vaguely to “Gulf Arab and Chinese banking sources in Hong Kong,” and it included one blind quote, attributed to “a prominent Hong Kong broker.” That doesn’t narrow down the pool very much.

To be fair, Drudge has this article on his site, but that could just be continued self-promotion.

As always, both of these strategies are dependent on investment time horizons.

Shorting, in my view, is always speculative, which itself is inherently short term. It's little more than a roll of the dice in hopes of making a quick score, not a reasoned, long-term decision.

As long as anyone shorting keeps that in mind, and doesn't mind losing the money they put up, all should be well.

Fisk has a lot of friends and contacts among middle eastern money-people. Our mutual friends, the Saudis, are notably fond of holding large amounts of gold, a tendency they share with the Paulian gold-bugs in this country. It's ironic, not to mention sinister, that so much of the right now shares a tool with foreign terrorist sympathizers.

Yep, reading more of the law it's ridiculous. They are going to post each form instead of bulk up and report stats, and it appears that it's necessary to do it by the end of the month the abortion was performed in. There's also required reporting on any "complications" which is a vehicle for the Bloody Randall Terry types to do their hysterical political theater every time a form with complications appears. For years now, various fever swamp celebrities, from Gary North to Glenn Beck, have urged the gullible to tailor their investments and other personal planning essentially to profit from what they see as a coming decline or even collapse in this country's economy. This has become virtually an economic subculture, a huge vested interest in this country's failure. Moved from Manhattan to a farm in Illinois 20 years ago--corn and soybeans. This area is very Republican, church going and racist and I'm none of the aforementioned and have become pretty intolerant of the first two, always totally intolerant of racists. First 5-10 years here people would apologize if they slipped and said the "N" word around me, cause they knew I "didnt like it." I vote the person, but other than my ex-congressman Ray LaHood, it's been a while since I voted for a Republican. I was/am an early Kos member, tho chronic lurker--I'm zeal deficient. Read Huff and Andrew Sullivan, NYTimes, TPM, Washington Monthly on line daily and in the last few months LGF. I went to Red State, Ace, etc. trying to figure out what was making the right so crazed. It just seemed from the instant Obama took office, Republicans in Congress became petulant and lazy and the right, delusional and hysterical. Anyway, I came to LGF and saw a site that was wrestling with what had been its perceived identity and refusing to follow other conservative sites into lying, bigotry and misinformation. Charles was working hard to maintain rational, factual discourse and I found this fascinating to watch and very inspirational. I had really come to feel that power and money had totally trumped honesty and integrity in the Republican party/right. The zero tolerance for chummy racism or any sort of racism and Charles' fight against 'deniers' of both Global Warming and Evolution made me feel comfortable and hopeful. I'm not sure I can add anything to the conversations here, but since I have been moved and encouraged by the people at LGF I wanted to be able to chime in, if for no other reason than to say, thanks.

Personally, I think we overstretched ourselves the last several years, and I think we tried to do too much at once without making the economic commitment that would be needed to fight 2 regional conflicts at the same time. Thanks for the answer. Luap Nor is scary. So far, you are not. :)

I registered a little while back. I had heard LGF mentioned before during the whole Rathergate scandal, and periodically checked in to see what the fuss was about, and found that I enjoyed the commentary. From time to time I would see links posted to or frontpaged elsewhere (namely Fark). I was lucky enough to spot open registration a month or so ago.

A bit about me I guess. Voted R in 2000, 2004, voted D for the first time last year. Socially liberal, but a bit on the fiscal side regarding gov't spending and initiatives (I know, how trendy.) Actively serving in the US military in a collection/interpretation & analysis function, used to fix airplanes before that.

Recently, I seem to be a bit disillusioned politically. Leaning more toward right leaning (I) rather than calling myself a conservative. Over the last few years, I just got a bit fed up with the social conservatives and neocons driving the Republican agenda, and deeming anyone who didn't agree with their position as a traitor or calling them un-American, while trying to repress any civil debate with personal rhetoric and smear tactics. Not really buying what the Left is selling at bargain discounts at other's expense these days either.

So far, I am liking what I read here daily. An emphasis seems to be placed on integrity, with facts & evidence presented driving the basis of a debate, rather than pure emotion or reactionary thoughts. I'm mostly a lurker, but plan on popping in from time to time.

/I bid you fellow Lizards a good night and good morning.
