I'm pretty sure you are right. Iran is using them as catspaw to keep Israel at bay. This is part of their nuclear brinkmanship. They have Qods force operatives in every single country that borders them, and in some areas three countries past their borders. They are the single most active terror supporting nation in the world. Everything they do is with the intent of keeping their neighbors destabilized, and those operations stretch from Lebanon, to SA, to Bahrain, to Pakistan, Iraq, Afghanistan, Georgia and Azerbaijan.

Then there's Lebanon, where they actually own the south.

My favorite quote about this whole thing is from Shimon Peres:
"The ship's arrest is not only of critical military importance, but also of political importance. Facts cannot be argued with."

The sad thing is, they are arguing about the facts.

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Moallem, speaking to reporters during a visit to Iran, acknowledged that the commandeered vessel had been sailing to his country but denied that any weapons were aboard, according to Iran's Mehr news agency. Iran also denied sending weapons. Hezbollah issued no reaction.

They will kick off the Hezbollah war if they get the notion that Israel is about to act against their nuclear facilities. At some point they will kick it off to delay the potential - that will the point at which they are close to achieving goal.

Shit those 120mm shells were incendiary/white phosphorus shells. That's some nasty stuff.

The JPost article in this commented on the unusually large number of mortar shells in the shipment, asking whether this indicated that Hezbollah plans to make greater use of mortars in any future conflict. 120mm mortars are relatively short range weapons (10 km at the outside) so this is not a threat to Israeli cities. What else they are planning is anyone's guess.

Israel itself learned many, many lessons from the '06 conflict, not all of which have been discussed publicly. I suspect that they will take a completely different approach next time and unveil a few surprises in technology, tactics, and operational strategy.

The wikipedia article's assertion that Israeli nuclear weapons are "all in the multiple megaton range" is utter and complete bullshit. Other nuclear powers have very few weapons in that yield range and some (the UK and France) have none at all.
There are any number of reasons for this, from the weight and bulk of such devices to the greater effectiveness of the larger number of lower yield devices that could be manufactured and delivered for the same effort. The most common US warhead, the W-80, has a published yield of about 280 kilotons (.28 megatons).

73 Randall Gross  Sat, Nov 7, 2009 7:25:36pm

The only other reason to send Hizbullah such weapons is if they are getting ready to take on the rest of Lebanon, which isn't likely.

Obama to skip United Jewish Communities General Assembly

Despite being slated to speak at the United Jewish Communities General Assembly on Tuesday, U.S. President Barack Obama said on Sunday that he will instead be attending the memorial service for the American soldiers recently killed at Fort Hood, Texas.

White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel will address the 3000 prominent Jewish guests from around the world expected to attend the assembly, instead of the president.

On Monday Obama will meet with Prime Minster Benjamin Netanyahu in a last-minute meeting, despite suspicions that the Israeli requested meeting will not take place.

Officials in the Prime Minister's Office tried on Saturday to lower expectations over the importance of such a meeting. "It won't be the end of the world if it doesn't happen," they said.

I saw on the news the heroine Kimberly Munley is doing quite well. Wounded legs, in good spirits. Her ex partner described her as vertically challenged yet full of power. Tip of my glass to her tonight! A drop of my zipper at the porcelain for the shooter.

We're supposed to be to sympathetic to him, you see.

If we ask the media, he's the first known case of PTSD—Pre-traumatic Stress Disorder. He was so stressed out about going to war, you see... blahblahblahBush's faultblahblah < /ObaMedia spin>

They can study his brain after we scope it out, assuming the firing squad doesn't splatter it on the wall.

Stupak amendment Passed:

Dem:
Yea 64
Nay 193

Rep:
Yea 176
Nay 0
Present 1

Total
Yea 240
Nay 193

So the Republicans can no longer cite opposition to abortion as a reason to oppose health care reform? Sounds like a smart strategic compromise on the part of those 64 Dems.

I think it is a prediction of arguable probability. I believe one can only observe that which is happening or has happened, and only then can any predictions accuracy be gauged.

Right now it falls into the category of wishful thinking.

Now fold that paper.

It's a prediction. Only a know-it-all would pretend to be certain of that which is, by definition, unknowable. Urging me to be less "obtrusive" is a really weak way of saying that I don't try to blend in with the crowd. I very much take it as a compliment.

re: #43 albusteve

I can only dream that together the IDF and the US blindside Iran and take down the nuke facilities and the Red Guard...those people need help to take on the Mullahs...we should provide it

It's not that simple. The nuke facilities are so widely dispersed and well fortified that permanently nixing the Iranian nuclear weapons program would require a full-scale war, with the war aim being to occupy Iran, meticulously sift through every storeroom and bunker and cave and take apart the weapons program from top to bottom, deprive Iran of all weapons-related machinery, raw materials, and scientific personnel and equipment, and establish a new government as was done with Germany and Japan.

None of this would be at all easy. Our own casualties would be well in excess of what we've lost so far over the past ten years. If we are mistaken about just how far advanced Iran's program is, or if they have managed to borrow a working device from North Korea, the consequences would be much worse.

The consequences of other policies, such as cold war, appeasement, or Radio-Free-Iran style efforts, are beyond our capacity to accurately foretell. We're at sea in a gathering storm, and we will never know if we have chosen rightly. If we choose badly, we'll know that eventually, to our great sorrow.

151 Bagua  Sat, Nov 7, 2009 9:57:35pm

re: #59 Shiplord Kirel

The JPost article in this commented on the unusually large number of mortar shells in the shipment, asking whether this indicated that Hezbollah plans to make greater use of mortars in any future conflict. 120mm mortars are relatively short range weapons (10 km at the outside) so this is not a threat to Israeli cities. What else they are planning is anyone's guess.

Israel itself learned many, many lessons from the '06 conflict, not all of which have been discussed publicly. I suspect that they will take a completely different approach next time and unveil a few surprises in technology, tactics, and operational strategy.

The relative numbers of mortar shells is not meaningful as we don't know what the make up of all the shipments has been. Mortars are also important for fighting withing Lebanon against the other militia groups or military.

It's a safe bet that Israel will be well prepared for round two. As before, most of the long range missiles will be taken out in the opening salvos. I expect there will be a strategy to take out many of the fixed intermediate missiles and positions early as well.

No doubt the entire south will be occupied quite quickly on the next go as well. HezbAllah has a real kicking coming thier way if they don't disarm.

re: #60 The Sanity Inspector

I once met a soldier who was tasked with helping to train the IDF with the Arrow ABM system. Sure hope they were quick studies...

The Arrow is an IAI joint project, they know how to use them as they developed them.

re: #77 albusteve

exactly...most of this ordnance is toe to toe...massive front line barrage and if Hezbollah has the stomach for that kind of fight, they will have to wait in long lines to meet their virgins...the kill ratio will astound people...more excessive retaliation bullshit

They are preparing to fight the other militias or army in Lebanon, as well as Israel. No question Israel is planning to provide them with much harder targets in the next round.

Israel has been slowly building a case for itself in the last year...they have actually proven the UN is a laughingstock...GO IDF
