Looks like its back to seeing how long he can talk about President Nixon going out for Tacos on the Daily Show....

Though to be fair I found him pretty amusing when he was doing that....

Asking a leading conservative and progressive here-Funny how we have a vacuum of sensible conservative candidates, and or pundits. We have a real lack of gravitas across the news media. We have very little investigative journalism going on.
Is That Coincidence?

Palin schadenfreude and the delight in it is legion here. I'm not passing judgement one way or the other about Palin, but please, there is so much delight here ever time she makes a stupid blunder.

YAY! I'm a leading progressive! thanks for the compliment :)

On the subject, short version yes. Theres this amazing book (whose name sadly is lost to me, I'll post it if I remember) written by a famous investigative journalist from previous decades. He talks in length about the downfall of journalism. Essentially he puts it up to corporate profit-taking (good journalism is expensive!) and consolidation in the industry. I think he also talks about how bland 'rah rah!' news is better ratings than in-depth hard to handle stories, but not sure about that.

He lied to millions of people, & as a "newsman" he attempted to influence a presidential election for partisan reasons & he is damn lucky that he did it here in the US of A because there are some other places that would have treated him rather harshly for his actions.

I hope you aren't being sarcastic again Walter. As a politician she hasn't been around long enough to judge her in my estimation.

Her religious ideas..........so what....wiccans get more respect from some quarters than she does. Nothing wrong with wiccans but there is nothing wrong with Christians either. So I cut her some slack because she is human and no more free of errors than I am.

I try to cut most people some slack except in the instance where they are being bigotted or cruel. So Sarah have fun being Sarah.
There are bigger things for us that we should be worrying about.

Frankly, I'm a little bit stunned to hear a Palin supporter admit she ever has made a mistake. Much of the Palin supporters' response to Palin criticism seems to be made up of:

re: #92 brookly red

I am not mad...

Yeats was.

Why should not old men be mad?
Some have known a likely lad
That had a sound fly-fisher's wrist
Turn to a drunken journalist;
A girl that knew all Dante once
Live to bear children to a dunce;
A Helen of social welfare dream,
Climb on a wagonette to scream.
Some think it a matter of course that chance
Should starve good men and bad advance,
That if their neighbours figured plain,
As though upon a lighted screen,
No single story would they find
Of an unbroken happy mind,
A finish worthy of the start.
Young men know nothing of this sort,
Observant old men know it well;
And when they know what old books tell
And that no better can be had,
Know why an old man should be mad.

The Democrats haven't done shit with the "super majority" they have...The Republicans had a small majority during the bush years, and they managed to ram through just about every piece of legislation they wanted...without compromising themselves into irrelevancy.

Of course, it doesn't help that a number of Democrats are more conservative than some of the moderate Republicans...so it's really a majority in name only.

He did no such thing. He allowed a manslaughter defense line to be presented without blocking that line. The way the wacky Kansas statute is written, he somewhat had to. The statute uses the words "unreasonably believes" which pretty much describes Roeder.

What a fucker. Seriously. The guy walked into a church and shot the man in cold blood and the judge wants to give him a break? Let him plead insanity, and lose. But don't let him reduce his charges to something that will allow him to potentially get out of jail so he can go "save children" by killing doctors again.

oh just wait for the civilian terror trials....

195 RogueOne  Tue, Jan 12, 2010 4:38:17pm

I came on to post this real quick:

[Link: www.washingtonpost.com...]

Google, the world's largest Internet search engine, said Tuesday that it may pull out of China because of a sophisticated computer network attack originating in China and targeting its e-mail service.

Google said it had evidence to suggest that "a primary goal of the attackers was accessing the Gmail accounts" of Chinese human rights activists. The attack was discovered in December.
........
But David Drummond, Google senior vice president and chief legal officer, added that the attacks "have led us to conclude that we should review the feasibility of our business operations in China."

Google has further decided it is no longer willing to continue censoring its search results in Chinese Google sites, Drummond said, and over the next few weeks it will discuss with the Beijing government how it may operate "an unfiltered search engine within the law, if at all," he said.

"We recognize that this may well mean having to shut down Google.cn, and potentially our offices in China," he said.

I think this is very good news. Google should be encouraged to follow through with their threat.

Here's the verbiage from the statute, note that Bin Laden could make a plea under this wacky section:

Kansas law defines voluntary manslaughter as "an unreasonable but honest belief" that there were circumstances to justify deadly force. It could bring a prison sentence closer to five years, instead of a life term for first-degree murder.

I disagree, by allowing him to push for manslaughter, he could get as little as five years.

"Prosecutors argued Monday that such a defense should not be considered because there is no evidence Tiller posed an imminent threat at the time of the killing. A voluntary manslaughter-based argument would essentially "enable a defendant to justify premeditated murder because of an emotionally charged political belief," the prosecution wrote."

Yes, but that is standard prosecution tactics here. The judge really didn't have a choice for the reasons Thanos gave, and the judge's previous comments indicate he has no intention of letting Roeder make this a platform for his beliefs.
Am I happy that the KS statute is written in this way? Hell no. But Roeder isn't going to get off, and I would even suspect that we'll see the KS statute rewritten as a result eventually-- especially as it's been home to abortion violence and Operation Rescue for so long. Yes, and every recession brings a massive crisis in the schools, public services, etc.

There are three common forms of state taxes: sales (regressive), property, and income (progressive.) Most states have two of three.

Oregon picked the two most progressive, and pays for it with each recession.

(Really sucks to live in a state with all three, i.e. California.)

You'll never eliminate inefficiency 100% as long as humans are part of the equation.
And even though Oregon ( and others) have no state sales tax, they are STILL "tax collectors". They have to (now) deduct and send to the gov't unemployment taxes, FICA, SS, etc etc

It really isn't as catastrophic as it sounds. See Thanos' comments above, and my own. Also this from the link:

He said that until the defense decides which evidence it will present, it's difficult for him to rule out Scott Roeder's proposed defense claim in the killing of Dr. George Tiller in Wichita, Kansas, last May.

My emphases.
This is a consequence of the way the KS statute is written, and prior comments by the judge (as well as a prior ruling) make it very clear that he isn't going to let Roeder turn the trial into a megaphone for his crazy.

So it still looks like Roeder is going away for a long, long time.

The judge has made it pretty damn clear he won't let Roeder use the trial as a megaphone for his virulent and murderous anti-abortion ideology.

Universal health care doesn't exactly entail government control, it could be done with state-by-state mandates to buy health insurance, the federal government can't because its unconstitutional.
(Though I believe that OR is in the process of relocating; now that they've finally xxx'd Tiller off their kill list, they have a doctor in Nebraska to target.)

I wouldn't count on that "Kansas Statue rewritten" bit too much it's quite likely that Sam Brownback and his Dominion minions will be controlling the state a bit longer. He's probably going to be the next Kansas gov.

Yup. I'll be watching developments closely.
Assuming that this defense does go forward and the judge doesn't exclude it later based on their 'evidence' not warranting it, the entire issue will revolve around the defense trying to sneak in ways to show that Roeder's belief was not 'unreasonable'.

Standard practice for these murderous scumbags when they're caught. It's also part of their plan. And there is a plan, don't doubt it -- OR is merely the public face of the murderous Army of God, and never doubt that these 'lone wackos' who blow up clinics or shoot doctors are plugged into that network, and the money and legal assistance they have at the ready.

Ouch! We generally frown on taking lives for profit here. 25 years to life in jail is the punishment for such a crime here.

If I get a chance I'm going to try to take a break and go down to the trial if there are demos outside.

You're not libertarian, you're a liberal. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

got this from Webster's ...

"Libertarian" as "classical liberal"
However, in the US since the 1950s, the word libertarian has been massively used by classical liberalss, only a few of them being anarcho-capitalists. These classical liberals sought to avoid confusion with uses of the word liberal then widely associated to various social-democratic and even socialist parties and even ideologies. Indeed, the libertarian socialist tradition was not strong in the US, so the word was not deeply tied to left-anarchism, whereas there was a tradition of individualist anarchists and other non-socialists and non-anarchists calling themselves libertarians in the US. The word has spread to the US and then other countries, through the founding of think tanks, parties and other groups.

No can play that way. Answer my question. You cannot be a Libertarian if you accept either of those two choices you stated above. I asked you to explain how those choices fit into a Libertarian political philosophy. And be real careful in your answer, I don't think you know my connection with a number of major Libertarians in Colorado. So, stop being dishonest and answer the question. You brought it up.

Good point. Even with modern American Libertarianism there's some room for variety. The biggest problem libertarians have is fundamentalism, they just take it too far and it's not a realistic political or social philosophy.

re: #479 rwmofo

With the US Military looking after things, yes.

Assuming Taj is serious, that's not a real good answer. The US military can not and should not be the World Police (despite protestations of Fuck, yeah!!).

So, Taj, the answer is no. There can not be "world peace". As long as you have something I want and am willing to fight for, be it money, or, as we will increasingly see in the coming years, arable land and water, there will be no world peace. Nice thought, though....

Relief is good, but it is a hopeless cause. Haiti needs to be largely evacuated and the people resettled where they have a chance at a descent life.

As far as Gitmo, I don't want to debate that now, I was just using it to illustrate my point.

The only port of call I recall not wanting to go on liberty. I recall we were anchored out, and some sailors paid $5.00 to be rowed out by a Haitian, while his "assistant" serviced the passenger. That $5.00 was likely a weeks pay back in the 60's for the locals.

If you want to have a "whoa" moment, click up Google Maps and look at the difference in deforestation between the Haitian and DR sides of the border. Stark.

As I say, the half of the Island that is Haiti is completely destroyed. It can never support its population in its current condition. It is hopeless. They should be allowed to leave and the nations which destroyed them should pay for this and help them resettle.

Good point. The Dominican Republic is the other half of the island...they have boutique resorts there (My parents stayed at one once...full-service, mints on the pillow, kind of place)...yet just across the mountains it's poverty central.

I'd think helicopter relief from the Dominican side of the island might be a good start.

True, but travel 5 miles from the resorts, the Dominican Republic is pretty bad, at least it was.

I don't know the full history but I will just hope that the next round of leadership there will do better by the people.

In brief, they were the first nation in modern history to throw of the yoke of slavery through revolt. A bunch of slaves gained liberty through force of arms and went on to later defeat a force of 30,000 sent by Napoleon.

They were essentially embargoed, blackmailed and looted until the US invaded in 1915, as an independent nation of freed black slaves was not acceptable to "civilised" countries. A mark of shame on the histories of America, France, Britain and Germany.

Yikes, that's all they need!

We have a large Haitian population in Miami. We even have a neighborhood called Little Haiti. Very anxious to become citizens, assimilate and are hard working folks. One of my bosses is Haitian. Harvard grad too. Hellofa guy.

U.S. policy doesn't favor Haitian immigration which is a shame because they need it and Haiti is a fledgling democracy. Maybe that's why the U.S. doesn't favor it. At the time Elian Gonzales' fate was being decided, there were 10 Haitian children being deported for the same reasons.

Anyway, island folk are a lot of fun. They know how to have a good time. Must be all those rum drinks.

Hey friend..Not the worst Earthquake in California I've been through...
When our first born David was born we went up to the mountains to spend thanksgiving with my Brother-in-law..There was a terrible Earthquake..
I remember standing up after it was over and screaming what the fuck!
I was pissed my new born almost died...I was pissed...I was never so scared or never so pissed in my life

I lived through the 71 Sylmar quake just a couple miles from the epicenter. Then in '89 I was in south SF for business. Near the airport. Then of course the Northridge quake nearly got us both. Three times in damaged dwellings. Never a scratch, than heavens.

OK. I didn't say we should be the World Police. You did.

To recap:

Q: isnt world peace attainable?

My answer: With the US Military looking after things, yes.

So my point is we're the good guys and keep the peace by being strong, keeping an eye on things and in many cases not even firing one round. One example: The former Soviet Union.

Second example: I bet a lot of Kuwaitis are glad the US Military dropped in circa 1989.

#3: What did the Iraqis do with Saddam after we handed him over to them?

I clicked on your nic, BTW. Thanks for serving.

And my point is that right now, we have pretty much all of our bullets in the cylinder. If something were to break out that demanded an American response, we would have very few combat brigades ready and available. It's a simple numbers issue. We are stretched tight as a drum.

"It's going to be a real killer," he said. "Whenever something like this happens, you just hope for the best."

Most of Haiti's 9 million people are desperately poor, and after years of political instability the country has no real construction standards. In November 2008, following the collapse of a school in Petionville, the mayor of Port-au-Prince estimated about 60 percent of the buildings were shoddily built and unsafe in normal circumstances.

Tuesday's quake was felt in the Dominican Republic, which shares a border with Haiti on the island of Hispaniola, and some panicked residents in the capital of Santo Domingo fled from their shaking homes. But no major damage was reported there.

In eastern Cuba, houses shook but there were also no reports of significant damage.

That happened near where I worked at the time. People were running up the causeway and jumping into people's cars.

There are not a lot of illegal Haitians here. As I said, they are anxious to become citizens. The law favors Cubans, however. They get priority. More Haitians are deported than other groups.

re: #752 Floral Giraffe

You are assuming that the Haitian government would welcome that kind of help. I don't know whether they would, or not.

They will. Its either that or famine. In a pinch, we'd simply disregard the government's wishes and send the stuff anyway. The US tends not to listen to Haiti's government when they get the way if something we think needs doing.

it's a simple question and not anti anything...there is nothing implied...we seem to have sevearl standards according to our business/voting interests...do you have any input?

The prevailing attitude in this country, at times, appears to be one of "We'll send our old shoes and bed-sheets, but don't bring the fuckers here!" I just don't think it's relevant at this point. We're talking about a country where people eat cookies made of mud (literally) because of the calcium content of the soil, and the fact that they have no food. Right now, our biggest concern should be how to prevent the deaths of hundreds from turning into the deaths of thousands.

Ideas like this are infecting the right in this country. The sooner we can get rid of them the better.

I guess Elvis is involved too

I got 2,490 Google hits with Elvis Presley Fairtax

Pretty hopeless nation if it cannot build even it's palace correctly.

The palace was built by Imperialist French during the Napoleonic wars, it's not built that much different than our capital building except it doesn't have a rotunda.

We'll get the job done, austin. This is the sort of thing where even Michelle Bachmann and Barack Obama will be on similar wavelengths. This is something America is good at. I think we'll make a difference.

Didn't someone at CNN speculate the AGW may have caused the December 26, 2004 Indonesian quake?

Shake data:

17: Port-au-Prince, Haiti (Intensity VII, 3 responses) Agency: USGS (Did You Feel It?)
Lat: 18.5400 Lon: -72.3400 Distance: 23.9 km from epicenter
Station Comp Max Vel (cm/s) Max Acc (%g) PSA: 0.3 sec (%g) 1.0 sec (%g)
Intensity Questionnaire 30.5000 32.4000

10 inches per second shake movement at .3 gravities. Violent, indeed.

As Ice burdens go away the earth beneath them rebounds. The bottoms of the great lakes are rising for instance - rebounding from the displaced weight of the huge ice sheets that gouged them out. It's a stretch at this point, but not impossible that displacing masses of ice off the land and into the seas will eventually increase pressures on Deep Ocean ridges.

Keep in mind a 4.6 is about one three hundredth of the power of 7.0. Log scale.

Yes really. Study their history, America has been their oppressor, exploiter and imprisoner, America has an unpaid debt in Haiti. Period.

If America was not largely and directly responsible for the Haitians suffering then I would agree with you. As it is, America has an historic obligation.
