Wednesday Night Music: Ben Folds Five, ‘Philosophy’

Music • Views: 3,751

A barn-burner performance of “Philosophy” from the first eponymous Ben Folds Five album. This song helped me through some hard times, and it packs a powerful message.

Youtube Video

Won’t you look up at the skyline
At the mortar, block, and glass
And check out the reflections in my eyes
See they always used to be there
Even when this was all was grass
And I sang and danced about a high-rise

And you were laughing at my helmet hat
Laughing at my torch

Go ahead you laugh all you want
Cause I got my philosophy
(It keeps my feet on the ground)
And I trust it like the ground
That’s why my philosophy
Keeps me walking when I’m falling down

I see that there is evil
And I know that there is good
And the in-betweens I never understood
So won’t you look at me I’m crazy
But I get the job done
Yeah I’m crazy but I get the job done

So go ahead and laugh all you want
Cause I got my philosophy
(It keeps my feet on the ground)
And I trust it like the ground
And that’s why my philosophy
Keeps me walking when I’m falling down

I pushed you cause I loved you guys
I didn’t realize
That you weren’t having fun
And I dragged you up the stairs
And I told you to fly
You were flapping your arms
Then you started to cry, you were too high

Now you take this all for granted
You take the mortar, block, and glass
And you forget the speech that moved the stone
But it’s really not that you can’t see
The forest for the trees
You’ve never been out in the woods alone

So you can laugh all you want to
But I’ve got my philosophy
(It keeps my feet on the ground)
And I love you you’re my friend
But you got no philosophy
Now it’s time for this song to end

Good lyrics. I can see why you like this song, Charles.

One of my all-time favorite Ben Folds Five songs. I’m absolutely with you, Charles: this song has picked me up and reinvigorated me when I’m down many a time, too.

And given your many battles with hatemongers on this site since your break with the right, it’s probably one of— if not the most appropriate song choices in weeks.

Well done.

In a similar vein, I’m reading the book Nation by Terry Prachett, and finding it one of the most moving and accurate books about coping in the aftermath of disaster.

Highly recommended to everyone.

I’m currently reading a book called “John Dies at the End”, by ‘David Wong’. Don Coscarelli, the guy responsible for the PHANTASM movies, and for BUBBA HO-TEP, described it as a mash-up between Stephen King and Douglas Adams. I’d say that’s pretty astute. I’d throw in a tiny pinch of P.K. Dick and a vague whiff of H.P. Lovecraft.

If you’re into black humor (note for the naive: “black humor” doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with Will Smith) and / or horror, you might be pleasantly surprised by “John Dies at the End.

Two other phenomenal Ben Folds songs (these are just solo I believe) that pack a particular emotional punch are “Still Fighting It” and “Gracie”. “There’s Always Someone Cooler Than You” is also a pretty awesome song.

re: #7 negativ

Thank you, I will. I really think Nation is his masterwork. Not that he can’t do more, or that his other stuff won’t be good, but this is about death and gods and dying and atheism and it’s just so bare. He’s still having fun with the language but he’s so damn serious. It’s like the best of the Vimes bits combined with the best of the Death bits, but better.

re: #8 UncleMonkey

That song’s pretty funny.

Smile like you’ve got nothing to prove
No matter what you might do
There’s always someone out there
Cooler than you

I know that’s hard to believe
But there are people you meet
They’re into something
That is to big to be expressed
Through their clothes

And they’ll put up
With all the poses you throw
And you won’t even know

That they’re not sizing you up
They know your ma fucked you up
Or maybe let you watch
Too much TV

Death: Humans need fantasy to *be* human. To be the place where the falling angel meets the rising ape.
Susan: With tooth fairies? Hogfathers?
Death: Yes. As practice, you have to start out learning to believe the little lies.
Susan: So we can believe the big ones?
Death: Yes. Justice, mercy, duty. That sort of thing.
Susan: They’re not the same at all.
Death: You think so? Then take the universe and grind it down to the finest powder, and sieve it through the finest sieve, and then show me one atom of justice, one molecule of mercy. And yet, you try to act as if there is some ideal order in the world. As if there is some, some rightness in the universe, by which it may be judged.
Susan: But people have got to believe that, or what’s the point?
Death: You need to believe in things that aren’t true. How else can they become?

Does the actor who plays Jack get paid per scowl, or per word said between teeth clenched in a grimace of defiance and anger?

15 Walter L. Newton  Wed, Feb 3, 2010 7:13:58pm

If it wasn’t for the fact that I am a thoughtful, kind and caring sort of guy, some of the customers that I encounter at the thrift store wouldn’t last 10 seconds with me in an elevator.

When someone buys a something like a used couch, it’s not one of these deals where I send an order back to the warehouse or something and the “pull” a couch for the customer.

No, I have to take a 4 wheeled appliance dolly out to the floor, tip the sofa up on its end, shove the tongue of the dolly under the edge of the sofa and then tilt the whole 8 feet of the sofa back on the dolly. This is done right in the aisle, among rows of used chairs, sofas desks, dressers and so on.

It’s amazing. You will have a customer walking down the aisle while you are trying to perform this juggling act, you, the 8 foot long sofa (a sofa/sleeper is even more fun) and a dolly… and they will look you straight in the eye and with the most sincere face, ask you “Am I in your way?”

No, you fucking idiot. You’re not in my way, if you consider the ultimate shopping experience is having this used hunk of worn junk end up slipping off this dolly and up ending itself and you ass-wise onto the floor.

Am I being too sensitive?

All in all, the acting on LOST is considered to be better than average for this serialized type of evening show. As someone who has spent 44 years in the regional entertainment business, on a part time basis, and working on both Hollywood and MFTV shows, I know who hard it is to act in these sort of shows… these are one camera shows, so very long days, multiple set ups for the same scene, shooting up to 12-14 times for the same scene… very tight shots, LOST is really better than average, in spite of some of the typical physicality display by certain actors.

My opinion.

…and there is an important distinction between large thrift operations and normal retail… production is job one, there is not so much emphasis on selling or internal marketing. It’s mainly haul from the route truck, price it, haul to the floor, haul to the customers vehicle, repeat.

I’ve spent the first 6 weeks at this store trying to clean up the image of the used furniture department, trying to make sure all the stuff is in neat rows, visible, accessible and so on.

The district manage was in the store today and I heard him say to our manager… “this is incredible…” meaning how organized the department was.

In the past, I’ve done a lot of buying and selling of used items at outdoor markets and such, and I know what it takes to properly market the stuff.

Many thrift store only care about piling as much used product on the floor hoping to move as much as possible, with no regards to what is really selling versus what is sitting for weeks and so on.

I’m trying to change that at this company.

I suspect that was to give you a hint that the sunken Island didn’t sink, like, too terribly long ago, like maybe in 1977 when a bomb exploded, versus maybe in ancient times.

Thanks… it’s so different, in regards to a “career” that I am actually enjoying the heck out of the job. I’ve always been someone who really get a kick out of learning new things.

I am working with a multi-cultural crew of men and woman, most abled, a few full time disabled, a lot of part time disabled people, and all very blue collar… it’s nice to be around real people for a change instead of the overly ruled run Department of Energy like I was doing from 1993 to 2005.

It new, different, and good exercise.

The company paid a whole lot of money for an in store ad campaign that stinks… I have connections in the corporate offices and I passed on my idea for modifying the signage… well, from what I hear, the in house marketing people are a bit excited about the idea, and they are thinking of passing the info on to the outside ad agency and see if they can run with it.

The outside agency, in my opinion, don’t have a clue about selling thrift.

We’ll see what happens.

One word of warning, Walter: be very nice and don’t go after anyone when proposing your changes, een if that person is being stupid. I say this because of my mother. She once went to work at an office that was quite disfunctional, but was still a tight-knit group (no, it was not in Scranton, to preempt the jokes). She tried to make changes the office desperately need (including reports that I helped write), but did so in a manner that aroused the ire of the group. Ultimately, the company let her go as she had become to disliked to be effective. From that I learned the importance of keeping your co-workers on side.

Sammelweistine was completely right that doctors needed to wash their hands between surgeries. But he was such an unmitigated asshole about it to every doctor— and thought he was right about all his theories, not just this one— that he was ignored as a crank, and we had to wait for Pasteur and Lister to rediscover it.

Everything you do has consequences for good or evil in ways that you cannot even imagine.

If the brave Union soldier boys had not fought to preserve the Union and end slavery, we would not have been there to help stop Hitler.

Only 80 years separate the two conflicts.

It is not too much to say that the Union Soldiers, and yes, the Brits and Churchill too, saved Christianity in any of its good senses.

Negativ and Obdicut - you both have me beat. I’m “reading” the audio version of Jeeves And The Feudal Spirit - one of P.G. Wodehouse’s Jeeves and Wooster light fluffy things while I paint the house, while I wait for someone to call me back to get me a permanent job - no valuable lessons, no character development, just the literary equivalent of nice light fluffy scenery going by.

Bonus points - the main character, narrating in first person, is always trying to remember Shakespeare and only gets little bits and pieces, usually wrong, exactly the way I remember it.

Alouette - “My cheap ass brother-in-law would even try to figure out a way to steal a sofa from your store. Hey, it’s somebody’s used stuff,” - you wouldn’t by any chance have a brother in law whose name correlates somewhat with “K.E.Loyd”?

Alouette - “My cheap ass brother-in-law would even try to figure out a way to steal a sofa from your store. Hey, it’s somebody’s used stuff,” - you wouldn’t by any chance have a brother in law whose name correlates somewhat with “K.E.Loyd”?

When are you going to come and tow away your piece of shit worthless undriveable car out of my driveway?

re: #24 Walter L. Newton

That’s ever so useful to the customer. We have some used furniture that’s served for decades, sturdy stuff that you keep like an heirloom even if it wouldn’t bring anything at resale.

But getting solid, serviceable used furniture is impossible if you can’t find it in the store. From the point of view of the customer who has a job and an income, the cost of used furniture includes the price of the time it takes to find what he wants.

An organized store cuts that price, which makes the money price more affordable and attractive. Even if it’s higher than at some place across town.

I did it very gracefully yesterday, for once. Long slipping slide forward with the right foot, left leg buckling elegantly under me, butt and shoulders taking the impact. My head didn’t even touch the pavement.

Usually I end up with an ankle the size of Ahnold’s neck, and hobble around for weeks. The people who rushed out from the store were impressed with my lithe bounceback.

re: #151 Mad Al-Jaffee

It’s a great one, but for me it’s a tie between Bringing it all Back Home and Highway 61 Revisited.

Sample of Dylan from the latter album and song:

Oh God said to Abraham, “Kill me a son”
Abe says, “Man, you must be puttin’ me on”
God say, “No.” Abe say, “What?”
God say, “You can do what you want Abe, but
The next time you see me comin’ you better run”
Well Abe says, “Where do you want this killin’ done?”
God says, “Out on Highway 61.”

Not only did young Robert know his Bible, he knew his Kierkegaard too.

And his influence on hip-hop music is still to be properly appreciated.

re: #24 Walter L. Newton

Your theater background has given you an eye for set design, yes? This is about staging, and it sounds like your work is noticed and appreciated. A good feeling.

Hey, that’s my other half and my honey you’re talking about there! We’re one flesh:

My true-love hath my heart, and I have his,
By just exchange one for the other given.
I hold his dear, and mine he cannot miss:
There never was a bargain better driven.
His heart in me keeps me and him in one;
My heart in him his thoughts and senses guides:
He loves my heart, for once it was his own;
I cherish his because in me it bides.
His heart his wound received from my sight;
My heart was wounded with his wounded heart;
For as from me on him his hurt did light,
So still, methought, in me his hurt did smart:
Both equal hurt, in this change sought our bliss,
My true love hath my heart and I have his.

Another verse from “Highway 61”. This one contains clues to the origins of the Illuminati, the death of freedom in America, and the ascendancy of Pam Geller:

Now the fifth daughter on the twelfth night
Told the first father that things weren’t right
My complexion she said is much too white
He said come here and step into the light he says hmm you’re right
Let me tell the second mother this has been done
But the second mother was with the seventh son
And they were both out on Highway 61.

I listened to “Ohama” by Counting Crows when I was in Omaha.

Do you think he’s frantic, frightened by what this possible court case might reveal? That is the impression I am getting.

That’s what I’m thinking too. Even his previous defense of O’keefe was overzealous. He was obviously caught red handed doing something very illegal and Breitbart went on TV spinning the difference between “phone tapping” and “Interfering with phones”. Any normal employer would condemn any illegal activity, wait for the trial and fire him if convicted. O’keefe isn’t really that important to Breitbart’s work. I think Breitbart is laying the groundwork for what revelations may come out about his involvement. Their fates are tied together at this point.

Hey, that’s my other half and my honey you’re talking about there! We’re one flesh:

My true-love hath my heart, and I have his,
By just exchange one for the other given.
I hold his dear, and mine he cannot miss:
There never was a bargain better driven.
His heart in me keeps me and him in one;
My heart in him his thoughts and senses guides:
He loves my heart, for once it was his own;
I cherish his because in me it bides.
His heart his wound received from my sight;
My heart was wounded with his wounded heart;

Now friends, let me write this out for you. [walks over to blackboard] We’ve got the following evvviilll numbers:

5
12
1
2
7
And 61. Now [draws lines between 1,2 and 61] if you add up these three numbers you get 64, the last two digits of Barack Obama’s birth year. This tends to show that Bob Dylan was part of the Seekrit Plot to install a Kenyan Muslim as President. And when we add up 5, 12, and 7 the picutre fully comes into view. Because those numbers add up to … ELEVENTY!!111 THE NUMBER OF THE ILLUMINATI!!!!!!11111111111111111

We need a new word for “butthurt” for those of us over the age of 11. There are days when I’m not in any fights, the episode of Family Guy is one of the good ones, Jon Stewart has a fun guest, the stock market goes up, no new cracks show up in the walls of my house, and I’m in a generally good mood, but for the kimchi I ate the night before. I don’t want to mix up my gastrointestinal challenges and any over-sensitive fu fu emo drama.

Not sure but I’d heard that. This is what wiki says (but of course, it’s wiki, so…)

Andrew Breitbart helps run the Drudge Report website. Breitbart met Drudge in Los Angeles during the 1990s when Drudge was a self-described “untrained D student.”[9] Drudge mentored Breitbart until 2005, when he left to work for The Huffington Post website.[10] Breitbart stated that he was “amicably leaving the Drudge Report after a long and close working relationship with Matt Drudge.”[11] He now runs Breitbart.com, but still helps run Drudge’s website from Los Angeles. Breitbart, who describes himself as “Matt Drudge’s bitch”,[12] works the afternoon shift at the Drudge Report.[13] Drudge frequently links to Breitbart’s site, but does not get paid for this service, although it does provide Breitbart with income.[10] Drudge has said that he holds no financial stake in Breitbart.com nor does he receive any compensation from its founder.[10]

It was kind of a summation of the Administration Christmas day bomber push-back from the last couple days and then relating that to recent GOP criticisms on that topic (this week’s Republican Address for example). I found it worth a watch:

Well, one of my moonbat friends insists that all new cars are seekritly being equipped with user-inaccessible, hidden GPS devices to allow “them” to follow drivers wherever they go. The technology, according to him, was developed for the Chinese by “them” (= US = evil American corporations) - as chips embedded in Chinese ID cards that tell the Chink authorities where every body (literally) is at all times. According to my source, the penalty for throwing away or disabling your Chinese GPS-equipped ID is life in prison.

Yep - it shows in a very clear way that ‘Anti Jihadism’ is simply the flipside extremism to that of the Jihadists.

I am thoroughly, irrevocably anti-Jihad. Does that make me Pam’s seekrit lover?

Seriously, Jimmah - revise that statement.

I would hesitate to make that comparison. I am very much anti-jihadism, but I harbor no hatred for Muslims in general. Much like I am anti-dominionist, yet harbor no hatred towards Christians in general.

I agree with that. That’s why I used the quotes on ‘Anti-Jihadism’ . I’m talking about the attitudes personified by the likes of Spencer, Geller, etc that try to co-opt people’s natural and absolutely reasonable opposition to jihadism into a crusade against Islam itself. Which is what this guys book quite clearly sets out to do.

“Islam itself” is, however, in serious need of a smackdown in the same way that overweening Christianity got one at the hands of the secular world.

Just yesterday, two separate Muslim cab drivers (one going, one coming back from my medical appointment) tried to refuse me taxi service because of my service dog. I wasn’t having any and told them I would instantly report their bearded asses to the authorities.

They knuckled, and I had interesting conversations with both.

In Minneapolis, it took a class-action suit by blind people to rectify the situation.

Yup.
Fundamentalist Islamism is the implacable enemy which must first and foremost be confronted, beaten back and ultimately defeated.
But unfortunately, all too many mainstream Muslims have and continue to enable the radicals by their silence and cowardice.
And even more unfortunate is the active denial on the part of those in government and even in the military who are afraid to face the threat honestly.
Massive problem.

Showtime’s “Dead Like Me”

Description: One hour drama that might be called “My So Called After-Life” in which a teenage girl dies suddenly, but remains among the living, functioning as a Grim Reaper. As she performs the duties expected of her, she is able to experience the life she always took for granted.

I believe Islam is on the verge of its reformation. They don’t have their “Luther,” so to speak, a reformer protected by a ruler, as yet. But enough voices of dissent are rising up that eventually someone will get the ear of a prince, mullah, or king that they will provide a vision that others can follow and improve upon. Whoever that leader is, they will have access to many voices of reform within Islam who have already spoken, but who have been marginalized or killed. Ultimately however, this is going to have to be an in-house program. So, in that regard, we should hope and pray for enlightened leadership among Muslim political leaders who would be willing to cultivate and protect religious reformers. But remember that even after the Christian reformation, there were religious wars that erupted for over a hundred years precisely because of that reformation (but not really. It was really about land and power). So even if there is a Muslim reformation, Islam needs its own “season” to process that change. But in the nuclear era, that season is more dangerous than in any time past. That’s what makes this transition so scary.

According to my source, the penalty for throwing away or disabling your Chinese GPS-equipped ID is life in prison.

Right, but there’s a starting point for discussion because we have an authoritative, constitutional set of criteria for ‘being a Catholic’ to start with.
In the case of ideological terms, as Irenicum pointed out, there aren’t such constitutive definitions. That’s why people can fight over what they call themselves and who gets to be called what. The boundaries are vague in the techincal philosophical sense of ‘vagueness’.

Actually, that was the first thing I thought of too. Educated Iranians may be the face of future Islam. But they need to identify with the poorer segments of Iranian society before they’re taken seriously by the larger public. They’re still seen as too ivory tower for most Muslims. And then there’s still the Sunni/Shia divide besides. Islam had their split early on, but no reformation to go with it. Thus reformation needs to occur in both Shia and Sunni Islam

I wish it were up to me who defined that term. But it’s not - it’s already been redefined by hordes of religious supremacist nuts. I don’t see any point in engaging in denial on that.

You can make the same argument about the word “Catholic”. We’ve had arguments here about meaning of the Celtic cross. I refuse to let even the greatest hordes ever seen in history redefine things for me. I’m stubborn that way.

re: #368 Spare O’Lake

Lumping Islamofascism in with all the other “religious bullshit” is, whether intentional or not, a moral equivocation and a dodge of the clear and present threat posed by radical Islam and all their enablers.

Islamofascism is not the only radical religious meme that has a lock on oppressive ideology.

Here in the U.S. we have a Christofascist movement (Dominionism) which has a great deal of money, power and influence. No, they are not flying planes into buildings, but they are most certainly using their money, power, and influence to try to direct the U.S. towards a theocracy of their making.

Whether or not their efforts tend to bare fruit can be debated, but there is no debate about their existence. They are here. They are entrenched, and they have an agenda not at all dissimilar to the jihadists.

Fascist supporter/enabler is much more to the point.

Concur, though harpy does make a fun pejorative.

Fair points. But the two are not in the same league and need to be taken on separately and prioritized differently.

I say it is a term to be defined by the beholder. I am anti-jihadist, I am anti-dominionist, and I will be become an anti-hinduist if they decide that coercion through violence, wealth, political influence and power should convert a free nation of individuals into servants of a theocracy.

Take that as you like. I am not a supremacist of any kind. I will not stand with fascists, I will not stand with bigots, and I will not stand with theocrats. Not of any stripe.

Kinda strange, imo.

True. One faction uses primitive shit-bird tactics, while the other uses more modern shit-bird tactics.

Their means are different, but their ends are the same… using religion as a tool of oppression and enslavement of free peoples, and to deny said people the right of self determination.

I mean, it was fairly clear what Jimmah meant with his comment, but people are so eager to identify as ‘anti-islamist’ that they got upset/defensive.

That kind of thing is always interesting me, why take such ownership of the term?

Bottom line: Jihadists will take over your country, suppress all other religions, and then kill you if you do not submit to Islam.
The creationist/anti-gay/anti-abortion Christians want to do away with the separation of church and state to clear the way for them to legislate their agenda.
A world of difference in their objectives and, even moreso in the means they would use.
Not even close.

If we are going to tack in that direction, we could say that Jimmah is giving up ownership of the term to the fascist elements which oppose radical islam for their own political gains. That would be too easy.

As it would be too easy to say that some who oppose dominionists have a bigoted agenda christians, and therefore we should concede the term “anti-dominionist” to the fascist elements of the world that oppose christianity.

I will not toss away the moniker of “anti-jihadist” simply because a group of stupid, fascist assholes decide to take it for their own. Similarly, I will not toss away the moniker of “anti-dominionist” for the same reason.

Incorrect. If you knew anything about the dominionists, you would know that they are no different than the hard-core, fundamentalist islamists. They simply worship different deities.

They advocate the primitive murder of those who do not follow their strict religious doctrine, and they are no different than islamists in their desired ends.

Where you are correct is in the difference of their means to their ends. Jihadists seek their ends through terrorism and mass murder. Dominionists seek their ends by manipulation of the legislative and political process.

They are the same exact beast, just with different heads.

Not so much a matter of strokes for different folks, as what is true by definition.

Individual atheists can display a level of zeal and dickishness equal to those of religious faith. Yet atheism itself, by definition, is not a religion.

re: #404 Slumbering Behemoth

And before you ask again why this is important to me, I will invoke a certain Rushism (I hate doing this. Are you happy now?):

“Words mean things”.

If we cloud the meaning of words in order to make points for our own views, we significantly diminish any reasonable discussion that could be made on any given topic.

407 Slumbering Behemoth Stinks  Thu, Feb 4, 2010 2:12:02am

re: #405 windsagio

would you compromise on ‘system of belief’?

Not exactly. Perhaps a “system of non-belief”? But even that is too simplistic.

The atheist does not believe in the Tooth Fairy, nor Santa Claus. The atheist does not believe in Zeus, nor Sekhmet. Not Baphomet, nor Beelzebub.

The atheist believes in no religious entities. Thus the distinction between “theism” and “atheism”.

Atheism, by definition, is not a religion. It is not a form of faith.

Yes I’m giving up ‘ownership’ of that term, but since that term has no function beyond identifying myself with a bunch of bigoted morons, I’m not in any way bothered about it.

Does the term ‘anti-jihadist’ do any work in combating terrorism? Nope - none whatsoever. Given it’s associations, just the reverse in fact. And I have to be honest here and say that I think the term itself thrives on a certain rather wingnutty paranoia, an assumption that unless one declares oneself to be anti-jihadist, then one is assumed to be somehow pro-jihad. That relinquishing it is to relinquish ‘the struggle’ against Islamisation, etc. I think this is nonsense.

For me rehabilitating it at this point is akin to attempting to rehabilitate the swastika. It’s become so tainted, despite its ‘true’, original meaning, that there’s really no point.

PS Consider the tedious and obvious tangents about the use of the swastika in Indian religious art and cries of Godwin’s law to have been anticipated and dealt with.
