The Beck-Massa Convergence Open Thread

Politics • Views: 3,453

Here’s an open thread as we rub our hands in glee waiting for the Glenn Beck show to begin.

The big questions: will Eric Massa even show up? Will he throw a fit and stalk off the set? Will Glenn Beck go nuclear on Massa about the groping investigation? (He pretty much has to, to keep any street cred with the kookosphere.)

Will Massa muss Beck’s hair?

Gotta love Fox News. Or maybe not.

I would watch this, but I'm thinking a viewing of "Zombieland" with my beautiful wife sounds much more appealing right now. In fact, I'm on my way there now, so y'all have a great night!

Front page coverage for you. Maybe they should have warned you. From Boing Boing:

Richard Metzger writes: "It was the blog post heard 'round the world. When Charles Johnson wrote "Why I Parted Ways With The Right" in the space of a few minutes and posted it on his popular Little Green Footballs blog, he had no idea the firestorm it would set off. Nasty denunciations, death threats and a New York Times magazine feature article later, Charles Johnson joined me for a lively discussion about what happened to him, the Darwin-hating, know-nothing Creationists and the frenzied insanity (and racism) of the anti-Obama right." Lately I've been seeing more and more far right anti-Beck comments on the usual sites, and I've seen the claim that Beck is a leftist plant who is manipulating conservatives made at least once a day since his CPAC speech.

I keep imagining how funny it would be if Beck was punking them all along.

This is how I imagine it going down: One day he walks up to his blackboard and writes "Gotcha", explains he's really a liberal and walks off the stage, and then looney tunes music starts playing in the background as the camera cuts away.

That would make my year.

If anything that is even worse. Is he really trying to suggest that HCR would abolish private health care entirely and we would all have to stand in line at Soviet style people's clinics next to the hog wallow on the collective farm?

re: #252 RadicalModerate

The majority of the information surrounding this report is bunk. Needless to say it has been swarmed with Tea Party types and also includes a great deal of misinformation from Infowars.

The ESPN "article" isn't even a news report but a commentary by a Robert Montgomery. The only factual thing about the ESPN piece is that they're no longer taking any public commentary which is typical when policy changes are made.

The actual policy is noted at the White House web site:

Ocean Policy Task Force: Interim Framework for Effective Coastal and Marine Spatial Planning

On December 14, 2009, President Obama’s Ocean Policy Task Force released its Interim Framework for Effective Coastal and Marine Spatial Planning (Interim Framework) for a 60-day public review and comment period. With competing interests in the ocean, our coasts and the Great Lakes, the Interim Framework offers a comprehensive, integrated approach to planning and managing uses and activities. Under the Framework, coastal and marine spatial planning would be regional in scope, developed cooperatively among Federal, State, tribal, local authorities, and regional governance structures, with substantial stakeholder and public input...

It also includes the interim report and current comments. This was opened on December 14, 2009 and the comment window ws for 60 days as noted above. Therefore it ended on February 15, 2010. You will find no mention of the banning of recreational fishing at all in these documents.

Fishing is manged already in marine waters. This includes protected marine wildlife areas and especially around coral reef zone. Federal, state and local management of these sites is a long standing management practice that has led to healthier stocked waters which are beneficial to the fishermen, consumers, and the marine wildlife itself.

The competition is fierce but I think I've found a viable candidate for Idiot of the Day:
Superintendent accidentally fires gun during class

BILLINGS, Mont. -- The superintendent of a rural Montana school district says he was showing students his black powder muzzleloader when he accidentally fired the weapon into a classroom wall during a history lesson.

Dwain Haggard, who used to be a Civil War re-enactor, was showing the gun to five students in Reed Point High School's American history class Friday when it fired.

No one was injured, and Haggard says he can't explain how the weapon was loaded.

He says he usually fires a cap during the demonstration, but this time there was a loud bang and the room filled with smoke.

A student who was in the class said the firing of the gun caught everyone off guard.

"Holy criminy, you just shot the map," the student said.

The ball shot through the "o" in the word "North" on a wall map.

According to Haggard, the gun was never pointed at the students once he inserted the cap. The Superintendent was facing away from the students, pointing the gun toward the ceiling when he pulled the trigger.

One father told Haggard he laughed until he cried after his son explained what happened.

Haggard says none of the students' parents was upset with him. He described the incident as "bitter irony" because he has tried to increase safety in the school district.

Ha ha! He should have been fired on the spot.

From HotAir: "The whole country could go full to empire with a full emperor and as long as it does not affect you have at it apathy prevails. Beck wanted to wake the apathy, Massa did not do anything to change this apathy so it does not affect you or anyone else."

If anyone knows what this means, please tell me. I know all the words individually, but put together they don't seem to describe anything.

In general, they seem to feel that either Massa just proves how corrupt Congress is, or he could have said more, but is scared.

To borrow a line from one of the GEICO cavemen, "Uhh, what?"

One of my childhood friends said that his son (now three) would be expected to serve in the military before college.

I asked if he was allowed to choose a branch or if he would be required to be a Marine like dad.

Friend thought about it for a second and said "He can choose. As long as it's not the Air Force."

I have a multi-cultural family. In just my immediate family I had 1 sister in the Air Force, Dad was Navy, my brother a Marine, and I was all Army.

Well, what he said about Rahm and the kids was out of line. I'm glad he retracted that. You can go away mad in politics, but you shouldn't let something like that stand.

Beck, who AFAIK has never apologized for suggesting that Scott Brown might well kill an intern, wouldn't understand.

On the ESPN fishing story. Found this little bit of hype by Robert Montgomery who is said author of the fishing ban legend:

Wild connection
Radical preservationist group could have hand in management plan

And while anglers seem to have been deceived about the fairness of the process, they have been misdirected as well. While they have focused their energies solely on dealing with the task force, a federal agency has been conspiring with a low-profile, but radical preservationist group, The WILD Foundation, to create a "marine wilderness" management plan that very well could interconnect with the task force.

WILD's objective: "We believe that at least half of the Earth's surface (land and water) needs to be permanently protected in an essentially wild condition, in a manner that keeps all of life interconnected."

Radical preservationist group? Well, here's there website -- The WILD Foundation and there actual statement:

WILD works to protect the planet’s last wild places and the wildlife and people who depend upon them, because wilderness areas provide essential social, spiritual, biological and economic benefits. We believe that intact wilderness areas are an essential core element of a healthy modern society.

Here's the "radical" staff. And their founder Ian Player who is:

Dr. Ian Player DMS, is one of the world’s outstanding conservationists and environmental statesmen. Born in South Africa in 1927 Johannesburg, he “earned his stripes” in the rough and tumble era during which Africa’s protected areas were being created and tested. Ian Player is a 'man of many reasons' for wilderness: African game ranger, international diplomat, writer, lecturer, wilderness guide, and a man of culture, the arts and psychology. Ian brings all of these parts of himself to bear on a single mission: to assure that wilderness remains a constant reality, and a source of spiritual inspiration, prosperity and fundamental physical life on planet Earth.

Mr. Montgomery fails at even making an accurate assessment of The WILD Foundation.
