Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., Issue #1 (June 1968)

Lifestyle • Views: 5,125

Tonight’s photo from the Lizard Collection is issue #1 of Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., when Marvel Comics started to get psychedelic. Notice the Peter Max influenced op-art.

There’s a small tear on the top, and some small creases along the spine, but apart from those flaws this book is in fantastic shape.

Did Peter Max influence Jim Steranko, or was it the other way 'round?

Very '60's, that art.

I like the Who Is Scorpio demi-hallucinogenic, but carefully legible lettering,

Steranko "combined the figurative dynamism of Jack Kirby with modern design concepts", wrote Larry Hama. When Steranko took over the series, he recostumed Fury from suits and ties to "a form-fitting bodysuit with numerous zippers and pockets, like a Wally Wood spacesuit revamped by Pierre Cardin. The women were clad in form-fitting black leather a la Emma Peel in the Avengers TV show. The graphic influences of Peter Max, Op Art and Andy Warhol were embedded into the design of the pages — and the pages were designed as a whole, not just as a series of panels. All this, executed in a crisp, hard-edged style, seething with drama and anatomical tension".[18]

I've met Jim Steranko a few time, back in the 60's, but not his incarnation as an artist. He was a working magician, and also had a number of books out on a number of different magic subjects. I first ran into him at Tannens Magic Shop in NYC. Saw a few of his lectures on card magic later in life. All around interesting man.

On MSNBC they broke in to programming with a report that on a United Flight to Vegas that an Air Marshall had to take down a passenger that had dwelt to long in the bathroom. Suspected bomber.

Still looking. Had an interview today and there's another one tomorrow. Plus I'm moving forward on a job I'm very interested in that I though I was not in the running for. Turns out instead that my name has gone to the hiring manager. All in all, today is a good day.

Great! Thanks for keeping me (and others) posted. We care!

From Harper's Index this month:
Average number of arrests made each year since 2001 by all 4,000 Federal Air Marshalls combined: 4
Federal spending this represents per arrest: $200,000,000

200 million dollars per arrest. That's not much money...

That issue #1 is going for $790 at this site. Cool find.

Compared to what? The amount it would cost if an Islamofascist slipped through the net and did his splodey-dopey thing?

re: #20 Cato the Elder

The economic cost of another terorrist attack isn't very easily calculable.

That figure of marshals and arrests is from a random congressman in Tennessee. I wouldn't trust it implicitly, either.

22 UncleSam  Wed, Apr 7, 2010 7:51:18pm

I've also got that issue, and the rest of the Steranko art series.
Great stuff.

Fuck Harper and his cousin Collins. As long as I think there might be an Air Marshall on board, I just might consider flying instead of driving.

I'm also, by the way, in favor of arming pilots and copilots, and to hell with the NY magazines.

No of course not.

When in the slightest doubt, don't even ask. Break down the door and tase the hell of them.

This goes for women, kids and the disabled, naturally.

Why take chances?

33 ryannon  Wed, Apr 7, 2010 8:31:54pm

re: #32 ryannon

The first response was just a joke, Cato.

I have no idea of the real circumstances surrounding that incident. It's possible that someone locked themselves inside and started screaming that they were going to bring the plane down. In that case, anything to stop them is justified.

Steranko and Kirby - there were giants in those days - on drugs..........8-)
