McCain could have coasted through the primary if he’d stood up to the Tea Party and called them what they were…ignorant fools. Instead, he panders to anyone he thinks might vote for him. It must be tough to be a Republican in Arizona when your choices are a birther and a panderer.

I’m not sure he would have coasted, though. What is true is that had he called the Tea Party crowd out, he’d either be winning big or (less likely but still quite possible) losing big. Instead, he has opted for the middle strategy favored by most politicians.

Oh I just thought it was a measure of how LGF has had more post about Daily Show as you’ve started focusing on crazy people on the right more frequently since that’s a topic that Jon Stewart comments on quite frequently as well….

22 Charles Johnson  Wed, Apr 7, 2010 5:56:30pm

Jon Stewart isn’t always brilliant; his bit about the Hiroshima/Nagasaki bombings being “war crimes” was fatuous and historically illiterate.

But that kind of misstep is pretty rare for him. He’s usually an equal opportunity gadfly.

If memory serves he walked that back the next day, and it was part of an interview which as in the example of Jon Vs John (Yu) while Stewart is good he can be beaten in an interview. I never thought too much about it but I’ll admit that it was a foolish and stupid thing for him to say.

Even after his campaign got Palinized, there were several moments that stood out to me. He was at a campaign stop or town hall thing somewhere, and a woman in the audience claimed that Obama was “an Arab”. He was quick to shut her down politely, but firmly. I also thought his concession speech was quite classy, and I was more than annoyed when the shitheads in the audience yelled all through it and booed toward the end as soon as he said

re: #25 Charles

The nuts are really showing up in the “Tea Party, Circa 1950s” thread now.

Well, you would expect that, wouldn’t you, Charles?

After all, one of the Nazis’ biggest worries was Mischlinge ersten, zweiten, und dritten Grades.

Mongrels of the first, second, and third degree.”

They wrote whole books about it, parts of which I have translated for posterity to see.

They were worried about “Verschwächung des Bluterbes” [weakening of the blood inheritance] and “Rassenschande” [usu. trans. as simply “miscegenation”, but lit. meaning “race-shame”] and “Fremdeneinfluss” [the influence of - gasp! - strangers].

In other words, what we fought against in WWII was exactly what we came home to fight against in the following decades.

I remember riding in the car on the University of Michigan Ann Arbor campus with my loving paternal grandparents in the late sixties and watching grandma flip out because she saw a black student holding hands with a white coed. Whoopsie! It was the end of the world. When I asked her why she might be remotely upset about it, she gave me the standard racist “think of the children” line.

Christ! I was maybe ten years old. I thought we’d be over this shit by now.

And anyone who goes all Godwin on me is going to get a smack upside the head that will leave you reeling for weeks. The Nazi analogy is precise and exact.

re: #68 darthstar

I don’t know about that…President Obama has done a pretty good job of pissing off progressives lately…so you can’t say he’s pandering to them. And it’s not like Republicans are going to support him, no matter how many times he includes their ideas (see Health Care Reform)…so that’s not pandering for votes.

Obama pandered to everyone during his campaign.
A case in point was his stance on Israel, pandering for the Jewish and other votes.
Obama is now pissing those he pandered to.

While I disagree with a lot of Obama’s policies, I feel bad for the guy. No matter what he does, he’ll get flack from the left and the right. He can’t win.

Yes.He.Can.

And he has. And he will continue to do so now that he’s learned reaching out to the right is a waste of time while they’re under the spell of the Palin/Teabag crowd. And with their poster child McCain going off the mental health reservation by denying his personal moniker of pride (too late to take it off the cover of that book written by someone else, but carrying your name, Johnny), there’s little chance they’ll come around before 2013…at which point, I expect ‘bipartisan’ to be the theme for four years as they scramble to field a candidate people will believe in enough to vote for the guy/gal.

McCain is ahead of Hayworth now in the R primary, but it’s a long way to the August primary. If gas prices go up, like everyone predicts, then McCain’s opposition to ANWAR drilling will become a campaign issue.

I’ve been trying real hard to thing of something good that could come out of the trainwreck that the Republican party has become. This is it, we could actually, finally, elect a third party president. Well, if we had an actual third party. No, the Greenies and such don’t count. Ummm, I think it’s pretty misleading to say he couldn’t name a Sox player.

The question was who his favorite player growing up was. He responded that he didn’t become a Sox fan until he moved to Chicago, that he actually grew up an A’s fan.

He was asked who his favorite Sox player was while growing up. He said he didn’t have one because he grew up as an A’s fan.

So, he didn’t have a favorite Sox player growing up. What did you want him to say?

For example, I’m a huge Blackhawks fan now, but I paid zero attention to the local team. I was a Bruins fan. If someone asked me who my favorite Hawks player was growing up, I would say “No one. I didn’t pay much attention to the Blackhawks back then.”

That answer doesn’t make me less of a fan now.

Not a Cubs fan, but I have to admit watching a game at Wrigley is fantastic.

But you can’t really watch the game from the apartment balconies anymore. They expanded the bleachers and all the owners installed bleachers on the roofs. If they don’t give the Cubs a cut of the profits, they block the view with a “wind shield.”

it really was…and when they lowered the mound as well…trying to juice up the game when they should try to speed it up instead

Any Irishman who would consent to spell his name “McGwire” is ipso facto and prima facie on drugs.

And not the good old drugs of the ol’ sod, either.

I agree, the Padres had a pitcher named Tim Loller…… not much of a pitcher but he could smack the ball….. so much so they used him as a pinch hitter.

Here’s a blurb

1981: Tom Seaver pitches an eight-hit complete game en route to his 247th career win as the Reds beat the Padres 11-2 at Riverfront Stadium. LHP Tim Loller belts a home run off Seaver but also gives up seven runs in two innings of relief.

Let me know if you’re headed this way Hoopster. Yes, the stadium is a behemoth and yet a real palace. They have a gift shop about the size of a Super Walmart. Just amazing. Pyramids ain’t got shit on Jerry. A friend of mine sold Jerry $1Million in wallpaper for the place for crying out loud.

Not so quick. I said that same thing as a long forlorn Bronco fan. Said they would “never do it”. This was in 1974.

In 1998 I had to pay a certain so and so who had held that marker for 24 years. It cost me $500. It was worth it to win it.

re: #46 negativ

I really am starting to feel like a sucker for admiring John McCain. I wanted to vote for him in 2008 until he brought out the homunculus. That was a shocker. It sure seemed like an extremely cynical ploy to court the religious right. As it happens, I didn’t vote at all.

Even after his campaign got Palinized, there were several moments that stood out to me. He was at a campaign stop or town hall thing somewhere, and a woman in the audience claimed that Obama was “an Arab”. He was quick to shut her down politely, but firmly. I also thought his concession speech was quite classy, and I was more than annoyed when the shitheads in the audience yelled all through it and booed toward the end as soon as he said
the word “Obama”.

But now he’s acting just like any other disingenuous, pandering politician.

He also steadfastly refused to personally hammer Obama over the Wright controversy, which could have been quite a powderkeg if he really would have pushed it.

I might be wrong about this, but I don’t remember hearing any dog whistle racism from his personal campaign, either.

He obviously very desperately wants to stay in office, but he also has lines he just won’t cross, lines that are starker and more restrictive than some of his more craven colleagues. But he’s still just a politician, trying to win the ugly people popularity contest.
