Gaffemaster Steele Gaffes Again

Politics • Views: 3,251

I’ve been out, so I just found out about Michael Steele’s self-inflicted foot wound: Michael Steele: Stanley McChrystal incident ‘comical’.

Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele found the dismissal of Gen. Stanley McChrystal “comical” because the “one thing” the United States should not be engaged in is a “land war in Afghanistan.”

“The McChrystal incident, to me, was very comical,” Steele said, reflecting on the general’s dismissal after his critical remarks of President Barack Obama’s handling of the war in Afghanistan were printed by Rolling Stone.

“I think it’s a reflection of the frustration that a lot of our military leaders have with this administration and their prosecution of the war in Afghanistan,” Steele said.

The RNC chairman then seemingly launched into an attack of the president’s choice to stay the course in Afghanistan, a decision widely supported by many of Steele’s GOP colleagues.

“Keep in mind again, federal candidates, this was a war of Obama’s choosing,” Steele said. “This was not something that the United States had actively prosecuted or wanted to engage in.”

“It was the president who was trying to be cute by half by building a script demonizing Iraq, while saying the battle really should in Afghanistan,” Steele said of Obama. “Well, if he is such a student of history, has he not understood that you know that’s the one thing you don’t do is engage in a land war in Afghanistan?”

Why, it’s almost as if he deliberately tried to blame the whole Afghanistan War on President Obama. Why would he do that?

Steele is the one being comical. That's downright hysterical! He's been watching too much Princess Bride.

The Michael Steele experiment is over. For a while I've thought Republican leadership would let him hold on through the election just to save face, but this was the last straw. I don't believe he makes it through July.

it's a bit perplexing that BO resisted the Iraqi war to the dire end, even calling it a loss during the campaign when the surge had obviously paid off...I consider that lying to your potential stupid voters, a result of BDS...then BO turns around and takes on this dismal Afghani gig and juices it up as the real war, the one that should have been fought instead of Iraq....then waits all those 6 months to stick a lousy 30k troops there that he announced will be withdrawn next summer....he has made this thing something that it isn't and people are dying over there while his show of a commitment has been lacksadaysical at best...say what you want

From the 2008 Republican Platform:

Afghanistan

In the seven years since U.S. troops helped topple the Taliban, there has been great progress – but much remains to be done. We must prevail in Afghanistan to prevent the reemergence of the Taliban or an al Qaeda sanctuary in that country. A nationwide counterinsurgency strategy led by a unified commander is an essential prerequisite to success. Additional forces are also necessary, both from NATO countries and through a doubling in size of the Afghan army. The international community must work with the Afghan government to better address the problems of illegal drugs, governance, and corruption. We flatly reject the Democratic Party's idea that America can succeed in Afghanistan only by failure in Iraq.

Time for a rewrite, I guess

A (slightly modified) quote from "The Princess Bride"? Check.

Misstatement after misstatement? Check.

For instance, what does "cute by half" mean? Shouldn't that be "too cute by half"?

And I thought the people demonizing Iraq were the ones who desperately wanted us to go there, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Bush, and Powell, liars all. Or is Steele talking typical GOP word salad and we're expected to know that what he really meant to say was "demonizing the war in Iraq"?

And finally, who chose the war in Afghanistan, again? Obama, apparently - in 2001, when no one I know had ever even heard of him.

Man, these Chicago thugs! They're powerful.

Or is it the Washington GOP drugs?

Also that the Authorization to Use Force in Iraq was unconstitutional under the precedent set previously under Clinton v. City of New York. If the line item veto didn't pass constitutional muster because the Legislative branch cannot delegate its discretionary budget powers to the executive branch, then how is it legal for Congress to delegate it's power to effectively decide when and where to declare and make war?

The RNC chairman then seemingly launched into an attack of the president’s choice to stay the course in Afghanistan, a decision widely supported by many of Steele’s GOP colleagues.

Beginning with former presidents Bush and Bush. Otherwise, it appears that this Paulian defeatist crap has taken over the GOP, effectively allying them with the likes of International ANSWER and Code Pink.

“Keep in mind again, federal candidates, this was a war of Obama’s choosing,” Steele said. “This was not something that the United States had actively prosecuted or wanted to engage in.”

What is this? Tea-induced amnesia? In fact, Michael, it was the Taliban and their AQ associates who decided that we would actively prosecute a war in Afghanistan. 9-11 ring a bell?

Re-post of Bill Kristol's open letter to Michael Steele.
[Link: weeklystandard.com...]

Dear Michael,

You are, I know, a patriot. So I ask you to consider, over this July 4 weekend, doing an act of service for the country you love: Resign as chairman of the Republican party.

Your tenure has of course been marked by gaffes and embarrassments, but I for one have never paid much attention to them, and have never thought they would matter much to the success of the causes and principles we share. But now you have said, about the war in Afghanistan, speaking as RNC chairman at an RNC event, "Keep in mind again, federal candidates, this was a war of Obama's choosing. This was not something that the United States had actively prosecuted or wanted to engage in." And, "if [Obama] is such a student of history, has he not understood that you know that's the one thing you don't do, is engage in a land war in Afghanistan?"

Needless to say, the war in Afghanistan was not "a war of Obama’s choosing." It has been prosecuted by the United States under Presidents Bush and Obama. Republicans have consistently supported the effort. Indeed, as the DNC Communications Director (of all people) has said, your statement "puts [you] at odds with about 100 percent of the Republican Party."

And not on a trivial matter. At a time when Gen. Petraeus has just taken over command, when Republicans in Congress are pushing for a clean war funding resolution, when Republicans around the country are doing their best to rally their fellow citizens behind the mission, your comment is more than an embarrassment. It’s an affront, both to the honor of the Republican party and to the commitment of the soldiers fighting to accomplish the mission they’ve been asked to take on by our elected leaders.

They're pretty much gone already. There are still some held over ideas mostly about Iraq and Afghanistan but remember neoconservatism was a fairly recent phenomenon. It's pretty much dead already. Beck and the Tea Partiers hate Bush for his deficit spending, unfunded social spending, bailouts, economic stimulus. etc. Beck often mentions Bush as being part of the progressive Cloward Piven conspiracy to destroy America. Neoconservatism is over with.

Yup. This might put the shit back in the horse but I think it's too late. Glenn Beck and the Birch Society are widely popular. Alex Jones is now mainstream. Bill Kristol is a little late to start complaining about the party pandering to extremist libertarians and isolationists. The party can live without Frum it will survive without Kristol too.

Why, it’s almost as if he deliberately tried to blame the whole Afghanistan War on President Obama. Why would he do that?

Because he joined Code Pink?

Because we aren't exactly winning, and it's convenient to brush away the fact that we weren't exactly winning back in 2008 either?

We aren't exactly losing either. In war, sometimes resolve is half the battle. The curse of a democracy is that whichever party is out of power has an interest in getting the voting public to see the other side as inept in its conduct of the war. That can verge over into hoping we lose, and talking as though we're going to lose.

The other curse of a democracy is that whichever party is in power has an interest in getting the voting public to see its own administration as winners. That can verge over into fighting on, aimlessly, when the game is not worth the candle, or when there is no candle.

But take heart. In a dictatorship, it's even more screwed up.

re: #173 Killgore Trout

Most people have no clue who or what The Birch Society is. Alex Jones is hardly "mainstream". Yes Drudge has links to him of late but usually that is the 3rd or 4th link he has on the same story. I would like if he would keep that nut off his site though...

Don't go too far on the false outrage about a group created on the GOP Blog page. Remember all of the crazy stuff that was on the Obama '08 community blog?

Drudge has a permanent link to Alex Jones's Infowars site, and Limbaugh has linked to one of Jones's articles before as well. Just sayin'.

What would we be doing differently in Afghanistan if McPalin were president?

Charles -

WHY would HE do that? Do Not Know Exactly - However, it sounds like 1976, all over again, when Sen. Dole talked about "Democratic Wars." - THE EXACT REASON - I COULD NOT VOTE for HIM in 1996. "Conflicts" the USA gets into are "American Wars." For better or worse - Right or Wrong. For that reason, Steele will be gone. Too bad, like Bob Dole, he had potential, and "peed" it away.
