Catholic Priest Abuse Linked to at Least 13 Suicides in Belgium

Religion • Views: 3,528

Ugh. The Catholic Church child abuse scandal in Belgium just keeps getting worse: Priest sex abuse linked to 13 suicides in Belgium.

BRUSSELS – Hundreds of sex abuse victims have come forward in Belgium with harrowing accounts of molestation by Catholic clergy that reportedly led to at least 13 suicides and affected children as young as two, a special commission said Friday.

Professor Peter Adriaenssens, chairman of the commission, said the abuse in Belgium may have been even more rampant than the 200-page report suggests.

“Reality is worse than what we present here today because not everyone shares such things automatically in a first contact with the commission,” he told reporters.

Adriaenssens, a child psychiatrist who has worked with trauma victims for 23 years, said nothing had prepared him for the stories of abuse that blighted the lives of victims.

Hitchens is right about the Church in many ways.

Child sexual abuse is a particularly ugly crime that most societies condemn harshly. The light-touch that the Vatican and some Bishops have taken with dealing with this problem over many decades stands as witness against the RC hierarchy's own morality.

The Holy See should consider hiring an outside consultant. One that will take action. It's pretty obvious by now that they are slow to move, if at all, internally. In an odd way they also seem to be by and large above the law. Criminal activity is being treated as though it was a civil case.

Like all religions it's pretty much a rip off of previous beliefs: Mithraism and Early Christianity

Sexual abuse is one of the worst things we have in this world. It haunts a person through their adult life, but they don't know it. It numbs a person to emotions, so they don't even know they need to ask for help. Something is always wrong, but you're never sure what.

seems to me the Catholic Church has driven more people away from God in the last 5 years than they ever brought to God in the previous 500 years. A buddy of mine, who lives in Mexico, says his friends are dropping out of it like flies. It's just a shame, on so many levels. ugh

I am lucky here. VERY good priests. I still cry over the very sudden death of the main priest of our parish. Really unexpected death. My daughter was really looking forward to his officiating with her children's quinceanos ceremonies because he really understood Hispanic culture and adored her and her husband. We are heartsick with his loss last year even now. And the school really ensures the safety of the kids. It is sad other churches are not recovering as well as this one has.

This American Life did an episode a while back that featured an interview with a monk who was repeatedly assigned the job of helping to cover up sexual abuse perpetrated by priests.

Patrick Wall was a special kind of monk. He was a fixer. The Catholic church sent him to problem parishes where priests had been removed because of scandal. His job was to come in, keep events from going public and smooth things over until a permanent replacement priest was found. But after four different churches in four years, after covering up for pedophiles and adulterers and liars and embezzlers he decided to make a change. Carl Marziali tells his story.

It's well worth a listen.

When your initial argument fails, ratchet up the "outrage" factor. That seems to be the "anti-mosque" opposition's tactic so far. Like publicity said, the next thing will be pulling out images of the body parts and trying to invoke disgust in people, then direct that disgust towards Park 51.

As a lifelong Catholic I have yet to witness a contrite Church regarding the abuse of children. I have met contrite clergy, but the higher you go the more the matter is treated as a PR exercise with liability concerns front and center. Genuinely pathetic.

He quite clearly can take it, and if I give you some embarrassment by proxy in the process then you also can just deal with it as far as I'm concerned. While having a community here is nice and all, basing it on "why can't we all just get along" doesn't fly with me. If I've got a problem with someone, anyone, I'm going to spit it out and deal with the consequences similarly. That's how I roll, past performance matters.

That "separation of Church and state" is an invention and not the law and that JFK codified it so he could get elected. What is needed now, we are told, are judeo-christian leaders to restore the religiously minded government that the founders intended. That way, we are told, this silly notion that sexual acts aren't subject to regulation can be discarded. otherwise, homos might get it on. That will piss off God. Then God won't let the US reach into his celestial goodie bag like he does now.

The story Charles posted turns my stomach and makes me ill. So many ruined lives. These priests have done more damage to the RC church from the inside than 1,000 outsiders trying to destroy the Church could ever accomplish. The Church would be better off defrocking and excommunicating every single priest, bishop, deacon or lay person involved even if it meant the loss of those "servants" led to closing up shop and donating all the buildings, real estate and assets to charity. That the Church authorities let this go on is pure evil.

Haters are often like that. Remember that Al Qaeda torture manual we found in Iraq back in 2006? That was the same thing, full of illustrations of men being brutally tortured. Haters rage begs to be externalized and torture porn is one of the outlets. Till it no long suffices and they decide to torture an actual human being.

Sea Girt passes resolution opposing 406-foot wind turbine

SEA GIRT — An upscale Jersey shore community is opposed to plans to build a 406-foot wind turbine.

The Sea Girt Borough Council Wednesday unanimously passed a resolution objecting to the federally funded project at the state-owned National Guard Training Center.

Opponents believe the turbine will hurt property values and pose a risk to the environment.

The state Military and Veterans Affairs Department says construction may begin next fall if permits are approved.

Department spokesman Patrick Daugherty told the Asbury Park Press the department is aware of residents' concerns. An environmental study is under way.

re: #146 Cato the Elder

Just like any activity where kids are involved with adults, they should never be alone with another adult, period. That goes for school, soccer teams, Cub Scouts, or Church. Parents shouldn't give blind trust to anyone with their kids. And you have to have the talk with the kids to know exactly how to protect themselves by avoiding being alone and to always tell their folks about anyone at all, including friends, family, or neighbors that makes any advances, no matter what. But yeah, part of the reason my wife or I are always at the set is just to keep an eye on things. And parents have the right to always be in sight of their kids at a set. The directors know the parents always have the right to be on site and keep in view of their kids. The fim industry has all sorts of protections in place for minors working on sets. Point taken.

Educated and progressive, with a gay mayor and a City Commission made up entirely of Democrats, Gainesville is a sprawling metropolis of 115,000 people where smoothie shops seem to outnumber gun shops.

Fanatics can come from anywhere, Gainesvillians will tell you, but why did this one have to come from here?

You gotta be shittin' me. They're trying to claim that it's "too close" now by saying that the body parts that landed closest to it were only 300 something feet away?

Is it just me, or is there something wildly unseemly about all this talk about body parts, as though you could measure touchdowns with them or something?

Makes me queasy.

The Oregonian recently ran the story of a man who left the priesthood because...

He fell in love.

Apparently he was a beloved and good priest, but he wanted to spend his life with the woman he loved.

Something's wrong here.

The principal of the school I was at last year did that. Left the priesthood to get married.

He's still in Catholic education.

Some of the people at my father's parish no longer do. They pay bills for the parish, or buy things the priest needs. That way, they know exactly where their money is going.

Around here the Emagine theaters sell beer. What a concept. Just the thing to offset the misery of having to sit through a chick flick the wifey might drag me to see. If only they had beers in the theatre back when Dangerous Liasons was out. I might have stayed awake past the first 3 minutes.

The last chick-flick I made my husband watch was Sleepless in Seattle. In the theater.

I learned my lesson over 15 years ago. When we go out, we eat out or bowl, or go shopping without the kids. No movies. Concerts, sure.

I'm not. Let's just say the words "High score" are not strange to me.

I was going to tell you about last Sunday. I had a friend at church who has two Aspberger's sons. Her youngest turned 12 recently, and that's really a big deal in the LDS church. When the young men twelve, they get to pass the sacrament to the congregation. It was his first time, and she had told me he was all excited about his new suit.

Usually it's just the young men, but this time his father was with him. (That's the concession they make to the Aspberger's. His father was there just in case. Not that there was any problem. He did great.)

I thought you might like that story. It was a heart-wrenching moment for me, because I've watched him grow up, and how far he has come, and how he has worked at all the milestones.

On a weirder topic, you do not know how grateful I am for Kingdom Hearts. One of the Subgroups in my fraternity is have a little themed/costumed party with the theme being Disney. Kingdom Hearts means I can dress up as Squall, which gives me an excuse for a leather coat.

re: #1 JasonA

You cannot joke about this. Seriously. I hate jokes about it because I feel like the joking minimizes the damage done to these kids. And it is severe, and awful, and as we see, life-changing (in a most negative way), or even life-ending for those who have experienced this.

I wish I'd gotten on last night so I could get in a discussion. See, I disagree about the joking. In short, the phrase is gallows humor or graveyard humor. Humor takes the overwhelming and cuts it down to a level where we can deal with it.

It's how we eat an elephant. You cut it down to one bite at a time.
