Always liked Shaw’s way with words. My favorite by him is the one that RFK often quote: “Some men see the world as is and asked why, I dream of things that never were and ask why not.” Never read any of his plays when I took Irish film and literature while I studied there last summer. I did read a play called Playboy of the Western World by his friend, J.M Synge which was interesting.

A jillion years ago, I read a science fiction story that sort of goes like this:
An astronaut is sent on a solo mission to the moon. While he’s there, global nuclear war erupts back on earth. The whole world is fucked, and the astronaut soon realizes he’s not going home.
So, the astronaut turns on his radio transmitter and begins broadcasting every fact he knows, along with his thoughts and memories out into space, in the hope that some alien civilization’s version of SETI will some day pick up his signal and acknowledge, however dimly, that the human species once existed.
The last thing he says before his oxygen runs out is a knock-knock joke.
I can’t remember the title or author of that story to save my life, but I’m dying to read it again. Anyone know what I’m talking about?

Good, at least you know it’s not cancer.
Braggin’ time! 4 months ago I went on a strict diet in preparation for quitting smoking. Thanks to the diet, natural metabolism, and cutting my calorie intake from 4000 to roughly 1800 calories a day I lost 30lbs in less than 6 weeks cutting my body fat percentage to less than 10%. I haven’t had a cigarette in 9 weeks 4 days and 3 hours, approximately. Most importantly, in a competition I’m having with my brother, I’ve put on almost 15 lbs of mostly muscle in 6 weeks mostly thanks to a different diet and muscle memory. I’ve gone from only being able to work out 20 mins a day to almost 2 hours and I haven’t worn a shirt in a week.

Right after I received my commission I went to Jacksonville, NC to visit my enlisted marine brother. He and his friends took me out to celebrate in a town bar full of marines and a mini-riot broke out. The majority of the crowd was using everything that they could get their hands on as a weapon, chairs, pool sticks, pool balls. I was just trying to get the hell out of the way, there was no way I was getting arrested in my first week.

Pentagon: 2 Russian aircraft buzzed U.S. warship
Washington (CNN) — A pair of Russian aircraft buzzed a U.S. warship off the Arctic coast of Russia on consecutive days last week, leading the U.S. Navy chief of naval operations to raise the issue with his Russian counterpart, a Pentagon spokesman Col. Dave Lapan said. The first incident occurred September 10 in international waters of the Barents Sea. A U.S. military official, who declined to be identified because of the sensitivity of the incidents, said a Russian Il-38 maritime patrol aircraft flew about 50 yards off the side of the guided missile frigate USS Taylor at just about 100 feet above sea level.
The official said the aircraft made several passes near the ship.
The next day a Russian Helix helicopter circled the Taylor, also at low altitude.
The official described the activity as “abnormal” operating procedure, because of the risk of an accident at such close range.
Adm. Gary Roughead, the U.S. chief of naval operations, discussed the matter with his Russian counterpart, Adm. Vladimir Vysotskiy, according to Lapan.
Lapan said the ship’s crew did not interpret the Russian overflights to be hostile, but said the two sides are still talking to determine whether standard maritime procedures were followed.
The two admirals met earlier this week during a visit of Russian military officials to the Pentagon. The incidents were disclosed by U.S. military officials only after that visit was over.

In my opinion, the influence of Dominionist is over stated. First off, Dominionism is far from a new concept, simply a contemporary labeling of a very old theocratic ideology.
Much of what our constitution became/is, was a direct response to certain Dominionist-like concepts. We threw off Dominionist-like thought, as regards to governing, we threw off the religionist, the Papist, and the numerous assaults on our secularism.
People on LGF point this out on a daily basis. We are a secular nation, with some moral underpinnings based on on certain theological ideas, mixed with enlightened humanist understanding of humanity and human rights.
Our constitution has been able to stand up to over 200 years of challenges to it’s validity.

It is. That’s why I think she may not have such an easy ride with Wallace. O’Donnell is not doing well, and even Fox is picking up on that. She needs honest questions about her past. Not hard-hitting, just straight. If she can’t answer them, she’s toast. We’ll have to wait till tomorrow and see.

This is a good thing. I think if the Teabagger candidates all eschew the other networks and rely solely on Fox news, they may find themselves coming up short at the polls in November. Ultimately, it depends on how successful the Conservative cult media is at expanding the cult. Cult votes are already secure, and no amount of stupidity in other interviews will sway them. The trick is then not to modify your ideas to broaden their appeal, but rather to expand your cult base so that your ideas are irrelevant.

It depends. If her handlers, which I’m sure she has plenty of now, decide to keep her away from the alleged “liberal media” this will probably remain constant until election day. Unless they find a way to completely control the interview. Bottom line is the GOP is not looking for ideas or rhetoric from O’Donnell. All they seek is a warm body in the Senate to vote either yes or no according in unison with a homogeneous GOP Senate body. Until 2012 they’re just looking for no votes.

She’s not closing the gap. That’s what Scott Rasmussen and Karl Rove have made clear. Rove went on O’Reilly last night and made it clear that he thought it’s because she won’t address her past. He’s got a point. She’s got baggage and if she does not deal with it (and dealing with it will involve some humility and embarrassment) she cannot win, not matter what her supporters do. Charles Krauthammer made the point as well: Deleware isn’t Florida, and she’s not Marco Rubio. She’s a weaker candidate running in a more liberal state.

That would mean the news organizations would actually have to work. Go out in the field and do some old school journalism. Get on an old GE rotary phone instead of pretending to communicate with people via email. Stories would have to be investigated and composed. Instead, the way they’re doing it now, they just regurgitate a campaign press release.

How would one install a theocracy in the USA?
Control of all 3 branches and the Supreme Court.

Walked the pup through her morning border patrol training. Fed and watered chickens and ducks. Collected eggs. Moved some feed bags into storage. Put some beans on to soak. Made a loaf of bread. Sent hubby out with a grocery list. Shucked some corn and drank two cup of coffee.
:D
I’m shamed. I did a load of laundry (well, it’s in the washer) and am on coffee #2.

Oh crap that reminds me I need to put stuff in the dryer. I’m horrible at doing laundry. I put something in a completely forget about it. Sometimes for a couple of days. Then I have to rewash it to get the mildew smell out….

No, but it can sure do a lot of damage. For examples, see the damage Don McLeroy and his bunch did to textbook standards in Texas. Also see the damage the Chicago machine’s increase in influence in Springfield has done to the state of Illinois. In both cases, a destructive mindset has done great damage without fully converting the state to its desires.

You’re twice my age. GET OFF MY WIFE!!

I just started going back to the gym about a month ago. I had stopped when I moved up into the hills here, we are a unincorporated town, and no official government, so nothing like a community center. I was paying peanuts for the community center gym in Golden, but up here, we have two private small strip-mall sized gyms.
But, I found out my employer Kroger offers a deal with one of these gyms up here, half price, so… I’m managing the payments… and going 3 or so times a week, mostly after work.
I’m not doing anything excessive, not really trying to build muscle, more aerobic to help keep the weight down.

Still not enough.
I will answer you with something I wrote up thread to someone else…
“In my opinion, the influence of Dominionist is over stated.
Our constitution has been able to stand up to over 200 years of challenges to it’s validity.”

But… for partisan debating purposes, it’s much more fun to scream “Dominionist… Dominionist… Dominionist” all over the place, rent your apron and whine.

Wahat spending do you want to reduce?

Mornin’ yall.. a Saturday full of helmet smashing awaits. Tonight, last year’s best team in the country faces their first test against Texas Tech.. if they can get past this one it might be another good season. Hope everyone’s doing mighty fine..
Last year’s best team was Alabama IIRC. This is a new year anyway.
