In a candidate forum in Alaska, Sarah Palin-endorsed Tea Party loon Joe Miller praised the border security of … Communist East Germany.

“The first thing that has to be done is secure the border. … East Germany was very, very able to reduce the flow. Now, obviously, other things were involved. We have the capacity to, as a great nation, secure the border. If East Germany could do it, we could do it.”

Of course, one reason why East Germany’s border was such an inspiration for Joe Miller is that guards had license to shoot to kill anyone trying to cross.

And some Republicans think that’s exactly what we need here in America too. For example, Georgia state Rep. John Yates.

East Germany didn’t just have a wall. They also had, IIRC, the highest recorded ratio of secret police staff to the general population, to say nothing of the vast network of informants that fed into their surveillance system.

If, on the other hand, you have no problem with illegal immigrants coming to the US and doing menial work, you can opt out of the service.

My grandfather while he was still alive told me a memory he had as a child in the 30’s seeing the KKK march through their hometown. He was a first generation American and Eastern European, another favorite target of the “true Americans.”

When these wingnuts talk about deporting all illegals before they get citizenship (which would cost billions of dollars that we don’t have, by the way) and when they flirt with the idea of cutting farm subsidies, I don’t think they understand how much that would damage our national security.

The only reason that the American agriculture industry is still alive is because of the cheap labor of migrant workers and because the Midwestern farm vote has been able to get a steady stream of subsides.

However, if we deported every illegal immigrant and cut the farm subsides, American wouldn’t be growing its own food. It would be reliant on third world nations.

America not being able to grow its own food? Yeah, sounds like a very sound domestic and national security policy.

East Germany did indeed have pretty good border security. A few brave souls did escape but with a high enough death rate to deter most others, which was the police state regime’s goal in the first place.
This illustrates once again the principle that solving a problem is not so much a matter of what solutions are available as of what solutions we as a society are willing to countenance.

This reminds me of a story about Guatemalan dictator Jorge Ubico, who ruled the country from 1931 to 1944.

Ubico liked to boast that Guatemala City was the cleanest national capital in the world, an extraordinary claim for an impoverished third world town. American author John Gunther visited Guatemala in 1941, however, and agreed that it was largely true.
The reason was simple: Ubico, stung by foreign press criticism of his city’s dirt and squalor a few years earlier, had taken drastic action. He stationed a policeman or soldier at every second or third intersection with orders to shoot and kill anyone who littered or threw garbage on the streets, or who failed to clean up after their dogs, horses, and donkeys. Only a few scofflaws had to be plugged before the rest of the population fell into line and started cleaning up after itself.

After German reunification, the Todesschützen (soldiers who allegedly killed fugitives) were brought to trial in the federal courts in what were known as the Mauerschützen-Prozesse (wallshooters’ trial). Also, high-ranking officers of the border police and of the Nationale Verteidigungsrat (National Defense Council of the GDR) were charged in court. The verdicts generally agree that even the common soldier should have and must have recognised that the GDR border laws were so fundamentally in conflict with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which the GDR had signed and ratified, that they were not law at all but formalized injustice, and thus the soldiers ought to have disobeyed their commanding officers.
