Despite Fraud, ABC News Hires Breitbart

Another reason to grow your own: Are we having another food crisis?
The world food price index is at its highest since 2008, when food prices rocketed and millions of people suffered. This year the crisis seems to be happening again. Prices for the staple grains that underpin the world’s food supply soared after forecasts for the US and Chinese maize harvests fell in October, Pakistan lost its wheat to floods, and crop losses to drought and wildfire led Russia to ban grain exports until 2011. Food prices have soared in India, Egypt and elsewhere and are being blamed for riots in Mozambique.
Are we having another food crisis? New Scientist investigates.

Prepare for revenge!
GOP plans attacks on the EPA and climate scientists
If the GOP wins control of the House next week, senior congressional Republicans plan to launch a blistering attack on the Obama administration’s environmental policies, as well as on scientists who link air pollution to climate change.
The GOP’s fire will be concentrated especially on the administration’s efforts to use the Environmental Protection Agency’s authority over air pollution to tighten emissions controls on coal, oil and other carbon fuels that scientists say contribute to global warming.
The attack, according to senior Republicans, will seek to portray the EPA as abusing its authority and damaging the economy with needless government regulations.
[…]
All that will be up for scrutiny in the event of a Republican takeover of the House, which political analysts are predicting. The Republican Party has hammered at the administration’s environmental agenda during the campaign. And rejecting the work of climate scientists has become increasingly common among conservatives.Several key Republican Congressmen — most notably Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Vista), who could take over the chairmanship of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee — have said they plan to investigate climate scientists they contend manipulated data to prove the case that human activity is contributing to global warming.
[…]
House Republicans like Issa and James F. Sensenbrenner Jr. (R-Wis.) of the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming have criticized the EPA for basing its endangerment finding on what they consider flawed research. Republicans assert that the science on climate change is not yet “settled,” despite the vast global scientific consensus about its human causes.Specifically, Issa has said he wants to investigate the “Climategate” scandal that broke late last year, when hackers illegally obtained and released thousands of emails of climate scientists working with a leading British laboratory.
[…]
Issa named Mann in a letter to the EPA as a scientist whose work was not “unbiased, accurate or reliable.”
[…]

From the Wiki entry on PETN:
The most common use of PETN is as an explosive with high brisance. It is more difficult to detonate than primary explosives, so dropping or igniting it will typically not cause an explosion (at atmospheric pressure it is difficult to ignite and burns relatively slowly), but is more sensitive to shock and friction than other high explosives such as TNT or tetryl.[8] Under certain conditions deflagration to detonation transition can occur. It is rarely used alone, but primarily used in booster and bursting charges of small caliber ammunition, in upper charges of detonators in some land mines and shells, and as the explosive core of detonation cord.[9]

If there’s a battery, yes (in theory). Most of the IEDs put together in Iraq use cell phones as remote triggers.
A call to the phone sends an electrical signal to the ring/vibrate doodads (that is the technical term) but the circuit is routed to a detonator instead.

Here’s my theory: They were attached to printer cartridges filled with some (at least slightly) radioactive liquid. I think the plan was to splatter the radioactive liquid. The synagogues might have to remodel a room or two, replace the carpet, etc. I don’t think it was a very good plot.

Pretty simple to guess then that there are cells and/or individuals within the vicinity of the synagogues. That is if the plan was for remote detonation? Doesn’t really make much sense to have a remote detonator on a package. Would make more sense for using it for in-flight detonation.

One wonders if the phone is set to “vibrate” if the pressure waves would be enough to detonate? I tend to be skeptical of that just because the simple loading/unloading of the package is likely to cause more shock.

BTW, I left a comment at that LA Times article. The first four comments are from what appear to be denialists who think they’ve somehow scored blog-points by their snark. Most of them are too ignorant to know they’re ignorant, and the rest don’t care - they just want to vent.

Either he is going to be very sedated, or he is going to give them exactly what they paid for, and I dont think they will be able to let him make it through the entire night he will just start saying such crazy stuff - this election is stolen, blah blah. Especially if anyone in the same room challenges him on anything, he does NOT like people to say things he disagrees with, and will go non-linear on them fast.
It very well might be a huge backfiring train wreck.

Fox has Karl Rove, who is much more of a draw, and is much more knowledgeable about elections than Breitbart. They don’t need Breitbart in a major role.

No dice. I crumble in front of an audience, I was a passable musician but a terrible performer. Just more stress than I could cope with. Once I started developing OCD’s to deal with the stress of performance I realized it’s just not for me. I could play music in front of an audience but it was painful. Public speaking was a different matter. I failed undergrad philosophy 3 times because I refused to do a presentation in front of the class.

In response to the incident, the family released a statement saying, “The Schalit family condemns the vandalism and cowardice which was perpetuated overnight in the protest tent near the Prime Minister’s residence by those who are apparently bothered by our presence and struggle in support of Gilad and would like to see Gilad abandoned to his fate with his Hamas captors. Yeah, really. It’s an odd phobia. I can’t stand to be the center of attention. I’ve always been like that and I suspect it’s genetic. Ever since I can remember.
I don’t much like being the center of attention, I’m a “behind the scenes” sort of person. But I can speak in front of a group when I have to - a moment or two of utter panic, and then I’m OK. Oddly, for some reason, I’m more comfortable in front of a group of strangers than I am in front of a group of folks I know.
But my daughter is like you - she really really HATES to speak in front of a group. She just cannot stand it, is an absolute wreck if she knows she’ll have to make a presentation in front of a group.
I think it has to do with being an introvert, in the sense that we tend to process information internally, in our own minds, rather than through interactions with scads of people which is what my extrovert friend does. I can’t deal with too much “noise” - I do much better relating to people one on one than in a group setting or, God forbid, a party - ew. Whereas my extrovert friend likes nothing better than to be with a huge group of people.

This is going to sound totally paranoid.
Is it possible they were meant to be received by someone at this end?
That doesn’t sound paranoid at all, to me, except it seems those items would be available locally here, and not need to be mailed in.
But I wonder if that’s something they’re investigating?
Which may be why we don’t know much, yet.

Here’s my theory: They were attached to printer cartridges filled with some (at least slightly) radioactive liquid. I think the plan was to splatter the radioactive liquid. The synagogues might have to remodel a room or two, replace the carpet, etc. I don’t think it was a very good plot.
Ha! We will force the Jews to redecorate!
That is not a very good plot at all.

One wonders if the phone is set to “vibrate” if the pressure waves would be enough to detonate? I tend to be skeptical of that just because the simple loading/unloading of the package is likely to cause more shock.
Yeah. If it remains stable after being thrown on a truck, I don’t think a phone on vibrate will do it.

I actually legitmately, no bullshit really like a magenta+hot pink stripes color scheme. I built a 80’s Trans Am with that color scheme in Forza 3, and I just go all weak in the knees when I look at it :D There’s just something about hot pink I like, it’s very obnoxious and punk. And I currently drive a grey car, and I’m sorta sick of grey :D

I understand..But nothing bothers me..I talk to everybody.. I’ve always been that way…well before I was adopted at 12 years old I hated everybody with a passion…But mom and dad healed me and taught me to love and enjoy other people and become the man I am..I owe them everything..
i was thinking the other day..When I was a little kid I judged people and judged them with extreme prejudice… I pretty much hated mankind..My mom healed me..I love people now..I hated them then…I don’t use the word hate lightly
You have good parents.
I’ve never liked meeting people. Until I’ve been around them a long time I have no idea how to read them and frequently say the wrong thing.
I was a good looking kid and young adult and I suspect there were quite a few confused young ladies because of my inability to pick up their signals. I had to rely on a friend telling me whether a girl liked me or not, and if I made a move on her, I was told I was ‘fast’.
I still don’t know what that means.

One of the best SCA stories I ever heard involved an empty Mickey’s bottle being used as masturbation device. Please note, this is NOT a good idea.
In The Real Frank Zappa Book, there’s a tour story about an unnamed band member having an encounter with a groupie (not revealed in the book, but known to insane Zappa fanatics to have been a nun*) that involved a bottle of ginger ale being agitated so that the carbonated pressure could be released at rhythmic intervals controlled by the thumb of said anonymous band member. Of course, FZ tells it with much more hilarity than this.

Neither do I since I felt the same type of rejection for having done the same. There is an intensity to it that hard to describe. It’s a personal intensity in which one is rejected and one loses friends. I don’t know the personal aspect of Hitchens’s case. I do know that there are several Hitchen’s stalker sites that bang the same drum against him as they did in 2004.

Yeah. You could call them the 100 percenters. You have to be 100 percent like them or forget about it. Screw it. I know two contractors and one is left and the other’s on the right. They’ve know each other for years now and they work together occasionally and are good friends. Let me tell you that politically they are almost the complete opposites.

Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the [Republican] party, and they’re sure trying to do so, it’s going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me. Yep. Because those on the extreme left and the right take the 100 percent position. Sometimes when I hear some news and it doesn’t seem clear I usually think to myself, “the answer (or truth) probably lies somewhere in the middle.”

True. Like and our interactions should be more like a marriage. We compromise. We find middle ground and often tolerate the things we don’t like. Of course being single I do not say this out of personal experience.
If our interactions on a national scale become like a marriage, then the entire country is a smoldering ruin within two years that makes Somalia look like Disneyland.

Occam’s Razor: A concept that, if you’re not aware of it, I should hope you’d look it up.
Shit I made up on the fly (because Occam sounds like some kind of legendary D&D character):
Occam’s Fluffy Pillow: Conformation Bias; Upon hearing or reading something that appeals to your point of view, you accept it as fact, refuse to research the issue any further, and lay your head (objective thought) down to sleep.
Occam’s Warm Blanket: Denial Bias; Failing the successful use of Occam’s Fluffy Pillow, or in conjunction with it, you accept the lie that confirms your bias, and wrap it around you like a warm blanket in an effort to shield you from the truth.

I generally hate watching anything dubbed. To me the voices and the intonation of the language are important, and I will accept having to read the subtitles in order to keep that aspect of the film.
The only movies I enjoyed dubbed into German were “The Blue Max” and “Seven Years in Tibet” (in which most or all of the characters would have spoken German in any case).
And my favorite dubbed TV show is “Ein Käfig voller Helden” (A Cage Full of Heroes) which is the German title for “Hogan’s Heroes”.
Hearing Schultz speak his Bavarian dialect against Klink’s Saxon accent is a truly sublime experience. In an ideal world, I would have it in stereo so I could switch back to English for the scenes with the prisoners…

I read the Blue Max when I was fourteen. I saw the film starring George Peppard a year later.I loved both.
In the original, George Peppard tells his commander that he learned to fly in “an old Rumpler”, which sent me to the encyclopedia to look up the Rumpler Taube, one of the first German fighters in WWI.
In the dubbed version, he says he learned to fly in “ein alter Fatz”, which basically means “something you would rumple your nose at”.
In any case, I learned never to trust a dubbed version ever since I saw a dubbed film of a lady playing golf. She knocked the ball downrange and shouted “Vier!”

re: #446 RogueOne
And yet they somehow managed to become friends later in life. The surviving correspondence between them is among the most satisfying material I’ve ever read.
A couple of examples. Jefferson’s letter of condolence to Adams on the death of Abigail:
MONTICELLO, November 13, 1818.
The public papers, my dear friend, announce the fatal event of which your letter of October the 20th had given me ominous foreboding. Tried myself in the school of affliction, by the loss of every form of connection which can rive the human heart, I know well, and feel what you have lost, what you have suffered, are suffering, and have yet to endure. The same trials have taught me that for ills so immeasurable, time and silence are the only medicine. I will not, therefore, by useless condolences, open afresh the sluices of your grief, nor, although mingling sincerely my tears with yours, will I say a word more where words are vain, but that it is of some comfort to us both, that the term is not very distant, at which we are to deposit in the same cerement, our sorrows and suffering bodies, and to ascend in essence to an ecstatic meeting with the friends we have loved and lost, and whom we shall still love and never lose again. God bless you and support you under your heavy affliction.
and a letter from Jefferson to Adams on the subject of religion, specifically Calvinism.
The truth is that the greatest enemies to the doctrines of Jesus are those calling themselves the expositors of them, who have perverted them for the structure of a system of fancy absolutely incomprehensible, and without any foundation in his genuine words. And the day will come when the mystical generation of Jesus, by the supreme being as his father in the womb of a virgin will be classed with the fable of the generation of Minerva in the brain of Jupiter. But we may hope that the dawn of reason and freedom of thought in these United States will do away with all this artificial scaffolding, and restore to us the primitive and genuine doctrines of this the most venerated reformer of human errors.
You must read the whole thing.
It’s impossible to conceive of any two currently living politicians conversing on that level.

re: #474 RogueOne
We’re all gonna die?
Well, of course.
We are going to die, and that makes us the lucky ones. Most people are never going to die because they are never going to be born. The potential people who could have been here in my place but who will in fact never see the light of day outnumber the sand grains of Arabia. Certainly those unborn ghosts include greater poets than Keats, scientists greater than Newton. We know this because the set of possible people allowed by our DNA so massively exceeds the set of actual people. In the teeth of these stupefying odds it is you and I, in our ordinariness, that are here.
The present moves from the past to the future, like a tiny spotlight, inching its way along a gigantic ruler of time. Everything behind the spotlight is in darkness, the darkness of the dead past. Everything ahead of the spotlight is in the darkness of the unknown future. The odds of your century being the one in the spotlight are the same as the odds that a penny, tossed down at random, will land on a particular ant crawling somewhere along the road from New York to San Francisco. In other words, it is overwhelmingly probable that you are dead.
In spite of these odds, you will notice that you are, as a matter of fact, alive. People whom the spotlight has already passed over, and people whom the spotlight has not reached, are in no position to read a book.
After sleeping through a hundred million centuries we have finally opened our eyes on a sumptuous planet, sparkling with colour, bountiful with life. Within decades we must close our eyes again. Isn’t it a noble, an enlightened way of spending our brief time in the sun, to work at understanding the universe and how we have come to wake up in it? This is how I answer when I am asked — as I am surprisingly often — why I bother to get up in the mornings. To put it the other way round, isn’t it sad to go to your grave without ever wondering why you were born? Who, with such a thought, would not spring from bed, eager to resume discovering the world and rejoicing to be a part of it?

I’ve seen Alice at least 30x. I was looking for a youtube version of “Make That Money” off of “Zipper Catches Skin”, which might be the weirdest Cooper album ever, but I guess it’s even too obscure for youtube.
I got to see him in the early 80’s on his “Raise Your Fist and Yell” tour. I was 3rd row dead center. I left with some girl, both of us covered in fake blood, and I was hooked.

I saw them in Dallas a bunch of years ago. Notable memories include Josh Silver hanging out and casually shooting the shit with the people standing in line before the doors opened (a lot of people didn’t realize he was part of the band); Pete drinking red wine from the bottle throughout the show (the not-quite-empty bottle being eventually launched like javelin into the audience); Dimebag Darrell making an appearance during the last song of the set (Black No. 1). After the show, much debauchery ensued at The Clubhouse, about which no more shall be said, because I’m not entirely sure about the statute of limitations on such things.

Mornin’…what’s for breakfast?
The assassin bug (Stenolemus bituberus) is a spider-hunter. Sometimes, it simply sneaks up to spiders on their own webs before striking, plunging its dagger-like mouthparts into its prey. But it also has a subtler technique. Sitting on the web, it plucks the silken threads with its legs, mimicking the frequency of weakly struggling prey. These deceptive vibes are an irresistible draw to the spider, who rush towards their own demise. The bug effectively has a way of ordering for delivery when it doesn’t want to go out for a meal.

A suspicious package discovered at the United Kingdom’s East Midlands airport contained “viable explosives,” and could have brought down an aircraft upon detonation, British Home Secretary Theresa May said Saturday.
…
The devices were “professionally” loaded and connected using an electric circuit to a mobile phone chip tucked in a printer, Dubai police told WAM, the official news agency for the United Arab Emirates. They were packed in toner cartridges and designed to be detonated by a cell phone, a source close to the investigation told CNN.

Hi, Walter! What were your two favorite rides at Disney World? We have not been, yet.
Well… I’ll put it this way… my favorite ride of all the rides I rode was Epoct Center’s “Mission:Space”
Monday morning, while my girlfriend was at her conference, I took the free bus to the Magic Kingdom… bought my own ticket for entrance to that park… and I spent 4 hours there, from about 9-1, and then the crowds got so big, I left. Managed to ride everything I wanted to during that time, waiting time was under 10 minutes for most rides at that time, I rode Space Mountain twice in a row (that was the first ride I headed for). Managed to ride Splash Mountain, Big Thunder, PeopleMover, Small World (rode that first time at the 1964 Worlds Fair in Queens NYC.), Pirates, Haunted Mansion, train, Century of Progress (rode that first time at the 1964 Worlds Fair in Queens NYC.)… and others.
That afternoon, I was at guest services, checking on tickets for Epcot for the next morning, and found out that they had a “after 4” ticket for half price. So I cell phoned my girlfriend at the conference and asked her if she was interested in going over to the Magic Kingdom for the evening, my treat. And on top of that, they had a special 9-12 midnight extended evening for guests of any Disney Resort hotel, so, se were able to go back (my ticket was good for multiple entries all day)… and we/I rode everything again… plus some more, like Jungle Cruise.
Conference over… Tuesday we had to leave at 2:00 pm for the airport. We hit Epcot early, this was my girlfriends treat, she paid for those tickets, and we stayed about 4 hours.
Rode Test Track, Soarin’ (a hang glider simulation), some minor ride/exhibits… had lunch at a Canadian styled restaurant… and rode Mission:Space twice.
Mission:Space is certainly the most interesting ride at Epcot. It is a simulation of a astronaut trainer, a quick trip to a base on Mars. You get two training sessions, info on the “mission,” (Gary Sinise plays the CapCom)… and then you are put inside a 4 person capsule, four seats, four monitors and four windows. All the requisite controls and lights and sounds.
The front of the capsule closes against you, so the cockpit “window” is directly in front of you, the bay door open, the whole capsule lays on it’s back as the “spaceship” is placed upright against the launch pad, and then you take off…
As you take off, you suddenly feel about 2g’s of pressure against you (space shuttle is about 3g’s from what I read)… this is simulater by the fact that the whole capsule is now spinning at 35 miles per hour. Since you are facing forward, to the center of the “axis,” you don’t feel the same movement as you would if you were sitting sideways to the “axis,” as in you standard “spin and puke” ride. You are facing the center, you can’t really turn you head right or left, you are looking a a video of “rising upward” and the whole multimedia experience is enough to fool you into thinking you are ascending upward with massive G force.
And when you breakthrough into weightlessness, the capsule stop spinning very suddenly, tilts forward, and these two actions give you a very convincing feel of weightlessness.
I won’t give away the rest… but there are some emergencies and thrills, but you finally make it to “Mars”.
It’s the first ride I’ve ever been on that has more warnings then a nuclear plant. At least 3 times they try to convince you NOT to ride the ride if you have any problems with movement, tight spaces, flashing lights etc. Or if you are too heavy or have heart or blood pressure problems.
A great ride… you can check out YouTube videos of the visual parts of the ride.

October is our driest month.
We have had about an inch and a half of rain this October and we’re in a DROUGHT condition.
Normal BR rainfall thru September is 49 inches or so - we had 44 inches through September, so we’re minus 5 from normal, putting us into a drought.
