A fire reported early this morning at the Salman Alfarisi Islamic Center in Corvallis where Portland bomb plot suspect Mohamed Osman Mohamud sometimes attended is being called arson.

The fire was reported at about 2:15 a.m. today. Corvallis Fire Department spokeswoman Carla Pusateri said the fire was intentionally set, but would not say what led investigators to the conclusion. …

Islamic Center leader Imam Yosof Wanly said he doesn’t believe the fire is a reflection on the community of Corvallis where he has lived for 24 years.

“I know people here know the true reality of the Muslim community here,” he said. “It’s a sad situation.”

I deplore that this happened, although I’m also surprised.

Corvallis is a college town, and fairly liberal and tolerant.

The arsonist doesn’t necessarily have to be from there.

I bet he’s a big Glenn Beck fan though.

Oh hell, just realized I have to go shopping, I have a few nice suits in storage along with everything else from my condo when I sublet it awhile after moving in with Mom and Dad. The problem is that none of the slacks are going to fit my now 34” waist…shit. I guess it is time to go buy a new suit for the memorial.

I’m trying to find a map from any recent election to show you, with no luck.

If we split Oregon into Red/Blue, with the Dem’s being blue—usually Portland is blue, maybe a coastal county or two, and Linn & Benton. Corvallis is in Benton county.

The whole rest of the state is red, but deer and coyotes don’t vote, and people are less dense.

I’m not blaming it on Democrats, I’m just explaining why this is unusual.

Something good came out of the leaks.

Australia ‘rock solid’ in WikiLeaks cables

Australia is described as a “rock solid” but uninfluential US ally in secret US government documents made public by the controversial whistle-blowing website, WikiLeaks.

A small number of the 250,000 cables have been released, leaving the US government in damage control and warning the release of the top secret documents could endanger lives.

About 930 of the WikiLeaks documents were written by US officials in Australia but it is not yet clear what information they contain and the WikiLeaks website was struggling under the massive amount of traffic.

One confidential document from the US Embassy in Harare, seen by ABC News Online, describes Australia as a “rock solid” ally of the US.

We do seem to get more than our fair share of Jihadis here….
Oregon is home to many terror suspects

But why Oregon?

If you’re to believe the reported words of the teen fingered in Friday’s Christmas-tree lighting ceremony bomb plot, it’s because “…it’s in Oregon and Oregon … nobody ever thinks about it.”

Indeed, in a Saturday interview with KATU News, a local leader with “Muslims for Peace” says he’s concerned radical jihadists could be trying to recruit young people from Oregon.

“Thankfully the FBI stopped [Friday’s attempted attack],” said Harris Zafar with the Portland group Muslims for Peace. “But is this a growing trend now that we still don’t know about? Even in Oregon, youth … are becoming radicalized.”

That’s why we are now taking a look, back to 1984, to review Oregon’s terror-related cases that made international headlines.

There are hundreds, if not thousands of Islamic centers in the U.S. Odds are, an American did this. What are the odds that a foreign individual or individuals zeroed in on this particular address, and unleashed their anti-Islamic fury?

…FBI claims are sometimes one-sided, unreliable and even untrue, especially when such claims — as here — are uncorroborated and unexamined.
….it may also just as easily be the case that the FBI — as they’ve done many times in the past — found some very young, impressionable, disaffected, hapless, aimless, inept loner; created a plot it then persuaded/manipulated/entrapped him to join, essentially turning him into a Terrorist; and then patted itself on the back once it arrested him for having thwarted a “Terrorist plot” which, from start to finish, was entirely the FBI’s own concoction. Having stopped a plot which it itself manufactured, the FBI then publicly touts — and an uncritical media amplifies — its “success” to the world, thus proving both that domestic Terrorism from Muslims is a serious threat and the Government’s vast surveillance powers — current and future new ones — are necessary.

FBI Thwarts “Bomb Plot” at Xmas Tree Ceremony in Portland, Oregon

…Clearly, the Pacific Northwest has been too complacent about terror brewing in our midst. Thank goodness for the heroic FBI that allowed one silly young man trying to impress older, more senior “terrorists” with an operational plan. And thank goodness they saved us from this attack, moments before it didn’t occur.

How long are we going to let the cowboys shoot up our country with their false terror plots and operations that would go nowhere without their instigation, planning, and coercion? How long will we allow our own federal constabulary to justify its own recklessly inflated budget by permitting actions like this to develop, fester, and grow operational in our midst?

This is terror, pure and simple. State-sponsored terror. Big-splash terror designed to make people compliant and fearful, and grateful to their federal government — in a city which has not yet installed the Rapiscan porno-scanners at our airport.

Someone needs to put an end to it.

Reading the story again. It sounds like the FBI tried to give him several outs, asking him to think about it seriously, and offering alternative ways to show his devoutness.

Also, if an informer turned him in, that informer was almost certainly a Muslim.

Two things I’m pondering on.

I’m just glad the FBI was able to stop another man-caused disaster before it was initiated. Kudos to them.

We don’t know, not yet, and maybe not ever, who dunnit. So it is possible that it was a false-flag situation. It’s also possible it was just what it looks like. Let’s just wait and see which turns out to be the case. No point laying odds.

re: #187 Dark_Falcon

Both. Both the far left and the far right share a hatred of the federal government in general and the FBI in specific. It’s always figured notably in their conspiratorial fever dreams.

paranoid, crazy and stupid people have a lot in common.

How is this news? :D

re: #1 EmmmieG

I deplore that this happened, although I’m also surprised.

Corvallis is a college town, and fairly liberal and tolerant.

Sorry EmmmieG but;
Tolerant yes, as long as it agrees with their views. I have spent a fair amount of time in Corvallis over the years and try to avoid the town if possible. There are some nice people down there though.

The arson in Corvalis is just a small foretaste of what we might expect in the event of a major Islamist terror attack on the US.

I am afraid that the “militias” will be out in their pickup trucks, running down anyone that looks vaguely “Mooslim” and hanging them from the nearest lamp post.

Sorry, forgot the link…
The FBI successfully thwarts its own Terrorist plot

By Glenn Greenwald

Seems plausible (the FBI thwarted it’s own attack), because I still believe the “explosive devices” found on the planes recently overseas (printers?) were the same thing: put there by the FBI so they can say, “See? We’re combating this terrorism thingy!”. They’re trying to pump up confidence from the American people I suspect.

199 KayInMaine  Mon, Nov 29, 2010 5:15:07am

As far as this arson goes…we become no better than the terrorists if we stoop to their level! In this case, the person who set this fire is worse than the guy who was arrested originally for conspiracy (he never got around to burning or blowing anything up!). *sigh* Until Americans start acting like adults, there will be more of this kind of violence.

This sort of violence, when committed by anyone, should be condemned unreservedly, and those who did it should be found and punished according to the law.

That said, human beings being what they are, it is not surprising that after all of the Islamic terrorism recently, both the plots which succeeded and those which didn’t, that some moron would do a copycat action. (This is why I love cats, cats can’t be bothered with all of this stuff.)
