Romney Shunning Tea Party?

Politics • Views: 45,989

The Boston Globe reports that former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney seems to be keeping his distance from the Tea Party.

The feeling is mutual. Teabaggers absolutely hate Mitt Romney for many reasons, including his religion, his pro-choice background, and his relative moderation in a field of extremists. It’s not just that Romney is making a choice to stay away from the Tea Party — they don’t want anything to do with him, either.

In recent years, Romney’s made a concerted effort to appeal to the religious right, even appearing at the Values Voter Summit staged by the far right Family Research Council. So don’t be surprised if this article turns out to be premature, and Romney makes a play for teabag support. He’ll need it to have a chance at the GOP nomination in 2012.

Romney out to early lead in NH primary, poll says

Mitt Romney has a commanding lead in the crucial primary state of New Hampshire, according to a new poll that shows him 23 points ahead of his next closest Republican rival, former Alaksa Governor Sarah Palin.

He’s already crushing the compitition so I suspect he can win without embracing the Tea parties. This would allow him to run in the general election without the baggage of being affiliated with a bunch of quacks and extremists (unless you count the Republican party itself).

re: #2 Slumbering Behemoth

It is an interesting tactical problem. If you look at the GOP 2012 field and see a bunch of far right types, then being the one recognizable moderate gets you a less crowded segment of the electorate to work. The problem is that in the GOP primary electorate, there aren’t that many moderates, so you are choosing to win big in a small segment rather than fight 10 others for pieces of the big segment. That should allow you to make the cut for a while, as you would finish in the top 3 in some early primaries. But at some point the weaker righties will drop out, and by then either Mitt has figured out a way to get a bunch of socons to vote for him or he fades out.

So tacking to the center is a good early-round survival strategy, but I’m not seeing how it gets him into April or May.

What’s after new Hampshire? Seems to me a few GOP hopeful’s made it through Iowa and NH to get crushed in the south and midwest, where being a prochoice mormon who keeps the whackos at a distance is not a winning hand.

Mitt’s the frat boy who brings his pretty girlfriend and bong to the hippy party. When everyone’s done ogling his girl and smoking his dope, he’s welcome to leave.

True. I think he can win the nomination without the Tea Partiers but he’ll still have to run on a Republican platform; repeal healthcare reform, oppose the bailouts and stimulus that saved the economy, etc. It would be a tough sell.

Romney’s big problem is the social conservative wing. He’s a transgressor in several important ways, and the socons are the ones who are really in control of the GOP.

I’d be surprised if he ever wins the GOP nomination.

36 palomino  Fri, Jan 21, 2011 2:16:49pm

Of course the reason I feel more comfortable with Romney is what will make it harder for him to get the nod: he’s more moderate, less populist, less of a know-nothing who’s proud to be ignorant.

But this will likely change as he gets closer to Iowa and South Carolina. Alienating the TP in those states is a losing strategy. And, if he loses badly in both those states (2 of the first 3) he probably won’t get the nod.

Mormonism lies outside the pale of those religions, along with Catholicism, Judaism and now even Episcopalianism (the latter for allowing gay marriage)

Yes and no, the had Palin foisted on them as a concession to retain the support of the Religious Right, and in the end she was a major factor in McCain losing the election (other factors being Bush’s dismal record and McCain’s inability to articulate why he would be the better choice of candidates)

But you are right, there is no chance of a moderate gaining the nomination, it will be wingnut city when it comes to picking a nominee and the most wingéd nut will prevail.

What ever happened to keeping your religion out of your job? I get it the socons find that unacceptable, and damn them for it. No sensible person want a theocracy here, of any kind.

But hey the socons will not hold sway forever. These things come and go over time. John Kennedy was the right man with the “wrong” religion. How many of us are sorry he got elected? How many good men for the job shall we dismiss over religion or a lack thereof?

Related to the story about the extreme anti-gay agenda of the group that is organizing early visits to Iowa by GOP hopefuls, about which I posted this morning, it appears as if Romney is keep his distance from them (unlike the rest of the GOP wanna-be candidates):

Iowa Social Conservative Group Says They Can’t Reach Mitt Romney

Leaders of a prominent social conservative group in Iowa that is organizing a series of forums with potential GOP presidential candidates said that they have been getting the cold shoulder from Mitt Romney.

The Family Leader announced on Thursday that former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty will headline the first installment of its Presidential Lecture Series on Feb. 7 and that former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., and businessman Herman Cain will also take part in the series over the next few months.

The group also invited former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, South Dakota Sen. John Thune, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, and Rep. Mike Pence, R-Indiana.

Romney, the former Massachusetts governor and 2008 presidential candidate, was not listed as one of the invitees.

“We have made several attempts to reach Gov. Romney or those close to him in order to extend an invitation to our Presidential Lecture Series. None of those attempts have been successful as of today,” said the group’s spokesman Chris Nitzschke.

[…]

“The Family Leader” is an extremely religious conservative group.

re: #79 ralphieboy

Yes and no, the had Palin foisted on them as a concession to retain the support of the Religious Right, and in the end she was a major factor in McCain losing the election (other factors being Bush’s dismal record and McCain’s inability to articulate why he would be the better choice of candidates)

I agree with you, but I can’t tell you how often I’ve read that Palin was a positive for that ticket. A couple years before the election I said I’d vote for McCain if he ran. He seemed so sensible at the time. The VP pick ruined it for me.

Regardless, given the subsequent behavior of that duo it’s pretty clear that America made the better choice.

An alternate view:

Romney just might be betting that the tea party movement will be completely discredited by the time the primaries get serious. I know this is a minority view here but the crazy cannot get a lot worse without spilling over into outright terrorism. In fact, it already has in some cases. I’m not thinking about Tucson so much as the Glenn Beck fanatic who was shot by police on his way to shoot up the Tides Foundation, and the two police officers killed by a “sovereign citizen” fanatic in Arkansas.
Romney is distancing himself as much as he can, as early as he can. It is obviously a gamble for him since the tea party could continue to flourish. It is the best chance he has though and he is shrewd to be taking it.

There aren’t any on the radar. Last time they chose someone off the radar—Palin—it blew up in their faces.

The nominee will likely be someone we’ve already heard of. Can’t wait much longer to get started (ask Fred Thompson or Giuliani how the late game worked in 2008). You need volunteers, contributors, speechwriters, campaign advisors and staff. That can’t be put together at last minute. The frontrunners already have the organization put in place.

Debra Saunders is getting interested in Gary Johnson, but he wants to cut Social Security and Medicare, and is, therefore, I think, totally nonviable.

I’m more interested in what Beck is doing now, on TV, inciting political violence, than in digging up his old cocaine-fueled hot talker career, seems pretty far afield of the issue of Glenn Beck

My point is Beck’s old radio behavior is no different than the usual shock jock guys on the air at the time. That’s really my only point. I come from this as a guy fascinated by radio culture, talk radio, how hosts prepare, how they do their shows.

I remember listening to Glenn beck probably before anyone here knew his name. I think it was 1997-1998-ish, he was subbing for the radio host Lionel a lot. I remember Glenn Beck’s show in the early 2000’s, where he was copying Phil hendrie’s “do the voices of my own guests” technique, after he watched Phil’s show live in the studio. Beck is more a chameleon than anything else.

Sorry, I know a lot about this shit ;-) So if it means I’m a little jaded about radio behavior, that’s where I’m coming from.

BTW, have now averted eviction for the umpty-umpth time.

You would assume that the owners of a thirty-unit building with four units standing empty would not want to lose a long-term, non-drug-dealing, non-gun-firing, non-screaming-drunk-at-three-AM tenant who, albeit a month behind with the rent, has paid said rent a month behind every month like clockwork, for, well, months.

You would equally assume that such people would not serve such a tenant with a ‘pay up or quit in forty-eight hours’ notice of extremely dubious legality under California law. How dubious? Well, it tells me that if I don’t give them their cashier’s check, my tenancy will be terminated in accordance with Oregon landlord/tenant law.

Anyway, crisis averted.

Romney is mendacious in so far as he doesn’t clearly elucidate his religious beliefs. As if they were truly important. But his lying is important.
The tea party doesn’t reject him for his religious beliefs. It rejects the socialized-medicine beliefs he seems to insist on holding on to.
The tea party stands for smaller government and lower taxes. Romney has shown himself to a big-intrusive-government guy.
So bye bye.

I can’t imagine there is a huge Palin contingent among the Steampunk demographic…

From the article:

The second thing is steampunk, a literary genre that borrows the notions of cyberpunk and transplants them into an alternate history past or fantasy world, usually influenced by the works of H.G. Wells or Jules Verne. It’s often characterized by the use of advanced technology substitutes reliant on non-electrical power, and a visual aesthetic heavy on intricately designed gearworks. Its popularity has reached a point where some enthusiasts enjoy dressing up in their own steampunk inspired costumes, and thus been fairly or unfairly labelled as “Goths who decided it might be fun to wear brown for a change.”

That last line made me lol….

I know this guy who renovates RVs in Orgeon, he fixes them up and takes them to Burning Man, he just ripped out the entire back out of this old 70’s toyota RV and rebuilt the living quarters from scratch, with like a week to spare before he left

He keeps trying to sell me this six wheeled RV monster thing he has that gets like 2 gallons per mile

That’s what I’m hoping for, it’ll be a thing that I share the gas burden with everyone riding with me :D

When you get back on your feet, re-read this comment then go back and read the hopeless shit you were doing a year ago. You made a damn good call.

I’m pretty handy with all that stuff and I’m kicking around ideas….I might dump a ton into a vintage VW camper or start from scratch with a newer utility van….I don’t really want another RV per se, and I need to consider knocking down big miles…I’m not adverse to a simple, more rustic set up regarding plumbing….what I really want is a vintage VW with a state of the art drive train, breaks etc…big $$$….but it’s already fun getting up to speed and looking forward to it….I need a new leg first and cannot really move ahead til I get that taken care of

yeah..I had a Dodge utility once, all pimped out and I liked it alot….very convenient…sort of a hybrid because we tented out of it but could crash inside very comfortably….but nothing would ever take the place of my VW Winny…vans are just plain a good idea

Charles, I know it’s a snowball’s chance in hell, but purely hypothetically, would you vote for Brown or Murkowski? Not over Obama, of course, but say over some lackluster Dem.

hahaha I’ll buy you drinks :D I think I was just an amped up political dumbass when I first came to LGF, right around the election, etcetc, since then I went from being around a bunch of politically amped up people at my health care job, to quitting that job and self-employed from home, I think it’s settled me down and made me a bit more at peace. Also more of a hermit, which I haven’t decided is good or bad yet

So yeah, sorry for being such a jerk, I’m still going to be a jerk, but maybe less of one

I didn’t mean to imply anything…it gets charged up here sometimes, but I think my brawling days are over, or nearly so…Charles doesn’t dig it and I don’t blame him

it’s funny, i came here because I was tired of angering my friends and clients by getting into protracted political wars, and I wanted to do it somewhere where That Was The Thing, it’s a political blog, that’s where people go to do that

And now I’m getting more mellow here too, and also the small voice in my head going ‘shouldn’t you be playing guitar?” whenever I start getting too cranked up on the internet

In Alabama that’s called the “Bastard Had It Coming Defense.” Sometimes works.

Some comedian said this years ago, and he was right—

“In the South, ‘he needed killin” is an acceptable defense”.

Landlords need to be trained. It’s hard work.

My landlord is well trained. I’m his accountant. I know where he lives and where he works, he knows where I live and where I work. That helps.

Fortunately (for me), I’ll probably be buying a condo and moving this spring or summer. No more rent! Yay!

Romney has gone out of his way to play nice with the religious right because it suited him. The fact he’s going to duck and run from the tea party is in no way redeeming. When it’s beneficial, he’ll be like every other GOP and promise the world to the wingnuts if it might land himself in the WH. Romney’s constant changes of direction to suit himself is like a big yellow highlighter, underscoring how inherently counterfeit he is. I trust him only marginally more than Palin, which is less than nothing.
