Indiana Democrats Leave State Over Anti-Union Bill
Across the nation, Republican administrations are launching attacks on labor unions. Today in Indiana, just as in Wisconsin, Democratic lawmakers left the state to deprive the GOP of a quorum.

Musical States —musical senators?
Like Musical Chairs at children’s birthday parties. Now, who will get left without a State when music stops?

Apologies if this was already posted—
FlashBACK: Abraham Lincoln Wrote Playbook For Wisconsin Dems Who Fled State
170 years before the Wisconsin Democrats fled Madison to deny a quorum, then-state Rep. Abraham Lincoln was fleeing the capitol in Springfield, IL — via a window, no less — to do the same in an attempt to save the State Bank of Illinois:
[Democrats] agreed to allow [the bank] to suspend its obligation to exchange its paper money for specie, but only for the remainder of the legislative session.
That’s when Lincoln determined to keep the legislature in session in order to buy precious time for the bank to find a way to survive, and that’s how he jumped into the national limelight on December 5, 1840. On that date, the Democrats proposed an early adjournment, knowing this would bring a speedy end to the State Bank. The Whigs tried to counter by leaving the capitol building before the vote, but the doors were locked. That’s when Lincoln made his move. He headed for the second story, opened a window and jumped to the ground!
Lincoln’s efforts failed, sadly, and “the bank was killed.” But as the Wall Street Journal pointed out yesterday, “The tactic of quorum avoidance by simply leaving dates back at least to the days when the U.S. Constitution was being debated”:
Legislators tried to stymie passage [of the Constitution] in Pennsylvania and Massachusetts that way, and some in Pennsylvania had to be dragged out of a tavern to vote. The Constitution passed.

The middle class are just lazy, because Rush says the only thing stopping people from all being millionaires is the government and people just wanting to leech off the real successes out there.

I’m starting to get a bit worried how this will all turn out, to be honest. While I think it’s absolutely proper for anything and everything to be done to keep these changes from getting shoved through and I’m also hopeful that this may finally energize the Democratic and labor base, I can’t help but be concerned that, at least in the longer term, these actions might not end up backfiring with an electorate that, quite honestly, doesn’t seem to like unions very much (Unless it is their own). That being said, upon really thinking about it, I suppose there’s not a whole lot to lose.
Grr…this all makes me so mad and depressed.

It’s true!!! We can all be millionaires if we just drop the top marginal rate another couple of points.

Charles you might want to make an edit to mention that this is about private sector unions in this post (if it isn’t overstepping my bounds to suggest so) and thus….
It should be interesting to see how many of our rightward leaning posters who have made claims concerning how much they support private sector unions even if they don’t like public sector ones show up to decry/refudiate his actions…

Wow. There are some nice fish there. 33 lbs in one weekend? I’m jealous!
The total weight of our combined stringers in the first few pics was 53 lbs. I had a 21 lb stringer the first day, the second I had 12-13 lbs.

I’ll stick to my belief that if unions are outlawed we will have announced that freedom of assembly is limited to those of the correct political classes. Shortly thereafter all the other rights will be abridged as well for the same reasons.
Then we won’t be a democracy anymore.
And the people behind this legislation claim to be for freedom against political correctness. Grrrrr.

According to the Indy Star, they need to head to a state run by a Dem governor to avoid being taken into police custody. So for Ohio, it’s Kentucky (oddly enough), West Va. or Michigan.

I understand what you’re saying, but as I read it, this legislation isn’t outlawing unions, it’s about preventing forced membership and payment of union dues as a condition of employment. It seems to me, one could consider unions as a political class, so it could be argued that by that same logic, the status quo already limits freedom of assembly to those of the correct political class.
Unions shouldn’t be outlawed, but neither should membership be a condition of employment.

If a job position has a union already built into it, why would you not want to be a union member?
Do you really think the cost of dues you save would be worth the greater pension and MUCH GREATER job security?

I still believe that the Far Right’s goal is to disenfranchise those they know they cannot win over to their way of thinking.
“Keep blacks ignorant and impose a literacy test, label all Hispanics illegal or ‘anchor babies’ and deport them, criminalize unions, homosexuality and get women back into the kitchen. Then all the white people who are left will obviously vote for us.”

Plus, a person knows it’s unionized before they take the job. If you hate unions, why would you want to work in a union shop?
Go take your super duper skills to a non union place.
