Iphones take good pictures of clouds, apparently.
Is there any filter or anything you need to use when shooting them?
I don’t have a digital camera; I assume that polarization problem is just for analog cameras.

I think polarizing filters would be just as desirable and effective for digital cameras as for analog (film) media.

A Jew? Here?!
/
We had these silly sayings when I was a kid. Whenever we’d visit my cousins, we’d come through the door and my aunt would say, “Jeet jet?” And we’d always answer, “No, jew?” And we’d laugh and laugh.
Later in the evening, my uncle would break into a rousing chorus of “The Five Constipated Men of the Bible.” Ah good times. (I can’t believe I found that song.)
Which has nothing to do with flowers.

My grandma used to insist on driving out to Mission San Gabriel and harvesting leaves from their aloe plants. She figured they were holier than aloe plants you grew at home, and should work better.
She was also a great believer in the curative properties of baking soda—my grandpa used to say she’d put it in your eye if you let her—but I think she just bought that in the orange Arm and Hammer box.

What a nice shot! Looks like it could have been shot today in fact.
Polarization is about controlling reflected light, digital cameras often enhance the contrast which has a similar effect. But polarization filters have been a staple of the average SLR camera kit since long ago. In my studio I polarize the lights and the filters for particularly precise control of reflections on jewelry and stones.

Note on CD’s Character: Since I’ve been using a Dungeons & Dragons theme, I felt I needed a dragon character at some point. However, a proper dragon is too powerful and too big to make a proper member of most adventure parties. So I kept Celtic Dragon as a good guy, but made him a “Big Good” foe to the Realms of Wingnuttia and Moonbattis. Imagine him terrorizing those places by using his fire breath to torch their Troll Colonies.

Colosseum Season in Jeopardy as Romans Lock out Gladiators, Christians and Lions
Dateline 128 A.D.
The Colosseum is in danger of losing its next season as Colosseum owners locked out gladiators, Christians and lions. In return, the Gladiators, Christians and Lions Players Association (GCLPA) voted to de-certify.
At issue: How to divide the millions in Roman coins made by the National Gladiators Christians and Lions League (NGCLL) every year.
The Commissioner of the NGCLL, Rogerius Goodellius released a papyrus document that said, “This is a sad day for all fans of the League. We have negotiated in good faith with the GCLPA. Our offer was fair. The players ask for too much. Would you like to see what’s under my toga?”

The Actual Live-Action Akira Script: Worse Than You Think
Every once in a while we’ll kick off a movie parody by saying “so we got a hold of the script” and then we make up a bunch of stupid crap, because we’re giant man-children. But this time it’s for real: Some poor, confused soul saw my column last week, about the ill-advised Akira live-action remake, and they sent me the actual, real script for the film. Again, and in no uncertain terms: I did not write the following script excerpts. They are not parody or fiction.
I have every reason to believe this script is authentic, but I do not have confirmation from the studios. If it is real, this script is the thing that pulled the movie out of Development Hell, where it had been sitting for decades. This is the script that finally got Hollywood to stand up and take notice. This is the script that made studio executives bolt out%

“In one of the bills before us, 6 million seniors are deprived of meals — homebound seniors are deprived of meals. People ask us to find our common ground, the middle ground. Is middle ground 3 million seniors not receiving meals? I don’t think so. We’ve got to take this conversation from a debate about numbers and dollar figures and finding middle ground there to the higher ground of national values. I don’t think the American people want any one of those 6 million people to lose their meals or the children who are being thrown off of Head Start and the rest of it.”

Oh my dog, selective caring strikes again.
So she fucked up on the #, saying 6 million:
The first problem with Pelosi’s statistic is that, according to the agency’s budget documents, only about 2.6 million seniors receive such meals. That’s even less than what she decried as the mushy middle ground of compromise.

…
A spokeswoman for the Administration on Aging referred a question to the White House budget office, which did not respond to our query. Hammill later acknowledged: “The Obama Administration had not made any determination of how they would implement a $71 million cut at the Administration on Aging if HR 1 was signed into law.”
So, in other words, Pelosi’s staff took a wild guess at where the cuts would fall in the agency.
But there are other problems with Pelosi’s 6 million number.
First, the administration requested the elimination of $6 million in earmarks, so it seems strange for Pelosi to call that a Republican cut. That should not be included, leaving us with $65 million in possible cuts.
Second, in the administration’s 2012 budget request, President Obama identified $150 million in cuts to the agency’s budget. It seems that those already-identified targets would be a more logical place to start looking for trims than meals for senior citizens, most of whom have incomes of less than $20,000.
Finally, the agency’s budget justification notes on page 55 that it has kept spending on senior meals essentially flat from 2010 to 2012, resulting in 36 million fewer meals for senior citizens. That’s six times higher than the figure that Pelosi has decried as an affront to “national values.” The administration’s budget, in fact, has earned the ire of some advocates for hungry seniors. Perhaps 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue would be a more appropriate place for Pelosi to direct her outrage.

So she fucked up on the #, saying 6 million:
Fuck those 2.6 million seniors. You guys are really amazing in your selective caring.
OK, that’s just bullshit.
The article goes on to say:
But Hammill tried to defend the number of 6 million, though he acknowledged that “that pot of money I mentioned is not exclusively dedicated to this program.”
. . .
Marta Dehmlow, a spokeswoman for the House Appropriations Committee, says the $65 million figure came from estimates on savings the administration provided regarding a provision of the new health care law that would be administered by the agency. “The Committee did not specify where this cut would come from and also does not know how AOA will spread that cut within their operations,” she said. “The Committee has received no official word on impact.”
In other words, there is not at this time any indication that the cut would affect the meals program for the elderly; there are other areas of the agency budget where cuts could be made to equal that reduction.
Bottom line for ME is that I will remember, always, that politicians of BOTH parties will use numbers and statistics to whatever advantage they can for what their party is advocating, and ALL those statements need to be taken with a huge grain of salt.
And it has absolutely NOTHING to do with “selective” caring - I think the meals for the elderly programs are wonderful, and would not like to see them reduced. But as of this moment, there is no official indication that’s where the reductions would occur, as far as I can tell.

Want Your 6-Year-Old to Learn How to Breast-Feed? There’s a Doll for That.
Move over American Girl dolls there’s a new toy in town. Walking, dancing, talking, eating or diaper-wetting dolls will be old-school once the world’s first breast-feeding baby doll hits toy-store shelves in the United States.
The Breast Milk Baby mimics the suckling motion and sound when brought next to a sensor-equipped halter top a child must wear to nurse the doll. The colorful top has petals indicating the correct placement for the doll. Once the doll is close to the area, the sensor triggers the baby to start suckling. The doll also needs to be burped to keep it from crying after a feeding.
There’s nothing a 6 year old needs to learn more than how to breast feed a baby. What will they come up with next, masturbation dolls?

This is not to say I would ever buy one for a child.
Yep. Nothing is compulsory. But I ended up NEEDING a GI Joe when I was 8 years old.

People have a cow about GI Joe. I say breast feeding dolls are OK as well. Americans need to stop freaking out about these things on both sides of aisle.
Not gonna happen. Freak outs are how you generate attention. and attention is how you get money and power. Sadly, an attention-seeking freak of the Charlie Sheen variety is much more likely to influence people than someone who is sane an normal.

GI Joe isn’t as tough as he used to be. Back in the 70s GI Joe was indestructible. Me and my friend tried everything to break GI Joe and he wouldn’t die.
Yeah. I think GI Joe morphed into this smaller ninja like character. I like the traditional, um, erm, dolls. lol That is kind of funny because we would never admit to GI Joe being a doll. Anyway. I didn’t morph into some stark raving nut because I owned one as some people would have you think.

Not too many will get this….. and it’s OK.

Best live version of Barracuda ever.
Alice in Chains, Nancy Wilson (who wrote the song)……. and Gretchen Wilson who nails the vocals, and she’s hot.

No bomb in minor blast near LA area synagogue: police
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Police investigating a blast near a Los Angeles-area synagogue on Thursday said it was caused by a mechanical failure, not a pipe bomb as they had originally thought. There were no reports of damage or injury from the 6:45 a.m. blast, not far from Chabad House in the Los Angeles suburb of Santa Monica, but residents and businesses in a roughly two-block area were evacuated, police said.
The cause of the blast turned out to be some type of mechanical failure that sent a post embedded in the ground flying onto the roof of an apartment building next to the synagogue, said Santa Monica police Sergeant Jay Trisler.
Earlier in the morning, when it appeared some type of bomb had gone off, FBI investigators and bomb technicians responded to the scene, spokeswoman Lourdes Orocho told Reuters, along with Los Angeles

OFF TOPIC:
Can anyone name a quasi-governmental/private agency that has the power to run a sting operation and shut down a restaurant for illegal activities (ones that violate health codes)?

Not really a health code violation, but:
Sting operation: Sushi restaurant accused of serving whale
The Academy Awards were on my mind because the sting was led — in conjunction with law enforcement authorities — by the documentary makers of The Cove, which took home the Best Documentary Oscar for its coverage of mass dolphin hunting in Japan .
The Times reported, “video of their meal shows the two activists, both vegan, being served what the waitress can be heard calling ‘whale’ — thick pink slices — that they take squeamish bites of before tossing into a Ziploc bag in a purse.” DNA evidence from the meat, a $60 course in the chef’s special menu, revealed that it was taken from an endangered Sei whale. The possession or sale of marine mammals is a violation of the Marine Mammal Protection Act, and can lead to a year in prison and a fine of $20,000.
Reminds me of The Freshman.

The whale meat sting operation story I linked to above is dated today. If this is a question from your culinary school program I’m guessing this is what they had in mind. Like I said it’s not a health code violation, but might as well be since the product isn’t approved for consumption in the US.
Also look at the recent set of illegal immigrant operations conducted by ICE against Chipotle restaurants. I don’t think there’s been a private component to those stings, but it’s plausible that ICE could be getting some of their intel from private organizations.

Yeah. This is for Microbiology 51, or “How to poison people with food.” My question is based on an actual (though anonymous) restaurant that was shut down in San Mateo county, for serving domesticated cat. Anyway, I’m at a bit of a loss trying to discover the agency.

I’d say either PETA, ASPCA or the Humane Society. PETA is the most activist so that’d be my guess. ALF/ELF are too out there, they’d never partner with the government, they’d just burn the motherfuckers down.

*nods*, but is the ASPCA or Humane Society considered quasi-governmental?
Therein lies the rub.

I’m not sure what quasi-governmental even means? All 501 c (3) non-profits technically have their status regulated by the government. Otherwise we’re talking about stuff like the Tennessee Valley Authority or Fannie and Freddie Mac.

Right, like Fannie May and Freddie Mac - except on a county level. I’m about to give up and go to be. Too tired, and I still have class tomorrow.
Thanks for jumping in.

That is a criminally inaccurate description of the Freak Out! album. Rubin and the Jets is doo-wop,
but there’s nothing whatsoever ‘traditional’ about Freak Out!

So is most of Disc 1 of Freak Out, so I think it criminally inaccurate for you to use criminally inaccurate.
