Donald Trump, Birther, Now in First Place by 9 Points

The GOP base is nuts
Wingnuts • Views: 32,193

A new poll from Public Policy Polling now shows Donald Trump leading the field of potential GOP presidential candidates by nine points.

Obviously, Trump took a close look at the numerous polls that show the tremendous popularity of the Birther conspiracy theory among the Republican base, and gambled that he could grab the lead simply by pandering to these lunatics. He was right.

Never would have guessed that Donald Trump would end up being the wild card. He's proving that pandering to bigotry works jsut fine though.

The same poll found 23% of Republican primary voters -- nearly a fourth -- will only consider birthers when picking a presidential candidate...

I'm thinking that 23% number pretty accurately defines the wingnut base.

"The truth of the matter is that I think that the vast majority of Americans…Democratic or Republican-really want this election to be about growing the economy, getting control of the deficit…and my suspicion is that anybody who is not addressing those questions is going to be in trouble." - Barack Obama

The GOP has a serious problem when almost a quarter of those Republicans polled believe the birther issue is central to the 2012 election. Trump is the sideshow, the base is the 3 Ring Circus.

Fuck yeah, Donald Trump, he's got to be a liberal plant.

The age of the respondents is rather heavily tilted towards people that are older. I mean, I know that's the way American demographics are shifting, but it's pretty striking that only 8% were younger than 30.

Let me see if I got this right. The wingnut base -- make that the far-right base because that's what they really are -- are willing to give Donald Trump a pass for his prior position which are seemingly liberal yet aren't willing to give Mitt Romney the benefit of the doubt? The answer of course is likely ignorant bliss and of course Mr. Trump recently reaffirmed his identification as a "Christian". Otherwise, that they're falling for Mr. Trump is truly a sign that the Republican Party is severely infected with Snooki-America syndrome give the "reality show personality" of Mr. Trump.

I don't think that whoever is ahead a year before the convention has ever really mattered. I'm pretty sure McCain was lucky if he had like 2% support this time last election.

Still... The fact that the leading candidate is going on TV and basically parroting crap, that 20 years ago would have been back page news in a Conspiracy Theorists' newsletter that had 25 subscribers, is troubling regardless of the timing of the primary season.

Part of it is that The Donald has never held elected office, hence has no voting history to have hung around his neck. He can just say that past liberal beliefs have "changed" in light of "new evidence," and all is forgiven in the light of his playing to the birthers. Meanwhile, Romney has a history as a RINO, one he tried to play on back in '08, and so will forever be seen as a "traitor" by the far-right.

DCCC chair Steve Israel: Vote today on Paul Ryan proposal will cost GOP the House

“When we win back the majority, people will look back at this vote as a defining one that secured the majority for Democrats,” Israel said.

Israel said that Dems plan to use the Medicare vote today to go on the offensive against Republicans from now all the way until Election Day 2012...

...Israel said the party was going to use the Medicare vote to hone a national message based on “choices” that ties the GOP drive to end Medicare as we know it to the desire for tax cuts for the rich.

“We’re creating a national framework on choices,” Israel said. “The choice I hope our members talk about at home is a budget that gives you a $100,000 tax cut if you earn over $1 million a year, and a $12,000 cost increase if you’re a senior on Medicare. That contrast is very compelling.”...

...It’s worth noting that non-partisan observer Charlie Cook recently came close to endorsing Israel’s view, claiming that undertaking a major overhaul of Medicare could be “little short of suicidal” for the GOP. And Republican strategists have also expressed serious worry about the political risks involved....

The birther party line is simply a way to say "I hate Barack Obama". In competition with other political talking points, the birther talking point has survived a Darwinian process. If you want to simply say that you hate the President personally, and you don't want to bother with the messy details of actual political positions, you can always assert that he was born in Kenya, or Saudi Arabia, or wherever. So it looks like the birther line is here to say.

Well Gaddafi had slowed down in production in his twilight years before this late-career resurgence. Maybe Trump can't match his peak, but that doesn't mean he can't have a better career.

Besides, Trump just recommended that after spending billions on ridding Iraq of a dictator and billions more to help establish the country as working democracy and ally, we should simply seize all the oil in the country.

Are you telling me that a proposal to prove every dark story about the USA told by Al Queda and deliberatly poking the Middle East isn't on par with Gaddafi/Kim/Khomeni crazy?

I think what it's for me regarding Jersey Shore and other type reality shows is that these are the kind of people I have no desire to associate with. I like having fun but I also value intellectualism. Too often I've encountered people of both genders who are totally immature when it comes to drinking and stuff.

I know an Italian grandma who has since passed that did not want her grandsons to wear black.
This was in the 80's, with everyone dressed for a night of disco. She was horrified.

Reminds me of a conversation with my German-born rabbi, in which he commented that it used to be that you knew a young man with his head shaved and the boots was a white supremacist, but now perfectly nice young men dress that way for fashion, and it's very confusing.

I'll make it short. Snooki is an idiot. The Jersey Shore is trash. Reality TV is the worst thing that ever happened on television and as usual Americans had to follow suit by once again trying to emulate these pathetic creatures. I am also thinking how dangerous it is in a two-party system of government that the quality of the potential candidates of one of those parties is so abysmally poor that Donald Trump would lead them all by 9 points. I am relieved by reminding myself how early in the process it is. But, I actually don't see much evidence that this situation might improve.

That must explain why all the black families in my neighborhood go to brunch at Denny's after church. They're there for the authentic white food and ambiance. Giving the children a cultural experience.

(I go to admire ladies' hats. And eat tuna melts.)

We have a NW version of Denny's, an all night diner chain with suprisingly good dishes called Shari's, which is better in every way except like 10% more expensive, so in high school my nerd dirtbag friends and I would play cards there at night and discuss metal or Star Control 2 or whatever we did back then

There was this super diner in Oakland when I was in college. We'd go to study there at weird hours of the night, because they had pie, and would let us light Santeria candles on the table (don't ask).

The only thing was, you couldn't go to the bathroom, because when we were there, the rest of the place was filled with hookers and cops coming off-shift, and we were afraid to be alone in the ladies' room with the hookers.

That doesn't make sense. You're worried about "thousands of posts" while Donald Trump is the one who's putting himself out there and the media is gladly following especially Fox News. Not only that but this is within a political context that may -- in a worst case scenario -- impact our lives. And during this time he is getting the support of a majority of Republicans as this poll indicates. And we're supposed to sit silent and not beat on this ass and all of the things he's been saying of late?

it's almost like they're NOT birthers, GOP primary voters are like empty vessels to be told whatever horrible bizarre conspiracy theory about democrats, and they just swallow it all

so it could be birther stuff, it could be some completely different childish nonsense about Obama, but these are uneducated, deeply ignorant rubes, and they just gladly suck down whatever is fed them, because they don't have the mental horsepower to question.

After Obama's out of office, you're going to all see a lot of Republicans who suddenly have amnesia about the whole birther thing, and pretend that they weren't advancing psycho racist rhetoric, because they'll surely be distracted by the next Shiny Conspiracy Theory
