Right Wing Freaking Out Over Common

It never stops
Wingnuts • Views: 22,717

The other huge right wing fake outrage of the day: OMG! President Obama invited one of those “vile rappers” to the White House for a poetry event! He must hate America!

Of all the people for Fox Nation to call a “vile rapper,” they picked one of the most positive artists on the scene.

You don’t have to take my word for this; here’s Fox News reporter Jason Robinson interviewing Common in 2010, telling the rapper, “Your music is very positive, and you’re known as ‘the conscious rapper.’”

The difference now is that Common was invited to a poetry slam at the White House, so now he’s fair game for the Fox News race-baiters.

That jungle music is bad for the soul, it leads to animalism!

(Wait, that's rock and roll. Rap is substantially worse, right?)

"Right Wing Freaking Out" could be the title for lots of news stories these days.

Perhaps they are freaking out because they realize that the sun is setting on their day in the sun, and the anxiety this causes is too much for them to bear.

And to add irony his name used to be Common Sense until a court ordered him to change it because there was some other shitty band already with that name.

4 Kragar  Wed, May 11, 2011 11:08:46am

But its rap!

Perhaps if we packaged it in a form they would be more comfortable with.

5 HappyWarrior  Wed, May 11, 2011 11:09:11am

Anything to bash the Obamas I guess. I don't know his music that well but the freak out over his subject matter is stupid especially from people like Palin whose own rhetoric isn't exactly peaecful.

There seems to be a large segment (usually older >>) of the population that thinks of rap as particularly henious, both because its not actually music (apparently) and also because its linked with those black criminals.

On his iPod’s 2,000 song collection: “Thanks to Reggie [Love, the president's personal aide], my rap palate has greatly improved. Jay-Z used to be sort of what predominated, but now I’ve got a little Nas and a little Lil Wayne and some other stuff, but I would not claim to be an expert. Malia and Sasha are now getting old enough to where they start hipping me to things. Music is still a great source of joy and occasional solace in the midst of what can be some difficult days.”

In other outrage news, a mob of a thousand people showed up at the LSU student union today to protest a planned flag-burning by LSU graduate student Benjamin Haas. Haas, no genius himself, was planning this side-show in support a student who has been arrested for tearing down and burning a flag from a war memorial he had also vandalized with graffiti.
Haas story

As it turned out, Haas didn't go through with the stunt. Rightwing account He was pelted with water balloons and every known form of verbal abuse and escorted from the scene by mounted police.

Video (charmingly entitled "LSU riot against hippies" although Haas was apparently the only "hippie" present)

Mediaite.com has a good take on it. Breaking it down, here's Jill Scott's quote:

“When my friend told me his wife was Caucasian, I felt my spirit wince.”

Here's her follow-up -- from the same article:

“Was I jealous? Did the reality of his relationship somehow diminish his soul’s credibility? The answer is not simple. One could easily dispel the wince as racist or separatist, but that’s not how I was brought up. I was reared in a Jehovah’s Witness household. I was taught that every man should be judged by his deeds and not his color, and I firmly stand where my grandmother left me. African people worldwide are known to be welcoming and open-minded. We share our culture sometimes to our own peril and most of us love the very notion of love. My position is that for women of color, this very common ‘wince’ has solely to do with the African story in America.”

Gee, I wonder which quote did not get any play from Drudge.

92 HappyWarrior  Wed, May 11, 2011 11:43:25am

I had forgotten that Common played one of the corrupt cops in Date Night. That was a fun little movie. Tina Fey and Steve Carrell were believable as a couple if you ask me since their chemistry was really good in that movie.

re: #88 BongCrodny

Difference between the people in the crazy right (CR) and everyone else (EE):

When you discover quotes by someone in "EE" that the media haven't picked up on yet, they generally make that person sound more sane, balanced and reflective than selective quotation had initially suggested.

When you discover quotes by someone in "CR" that the media haven't picked up on yet, the opposite generally occurs.

I was on an early flight to Pittsburgh once, sat beside "Treach" from Naughty By Nature.

Poor dude. He'd been up all night partying from the concert the night before, and that white dude (*waves!*) beside him did not shut up the whole flight.

As we were getting off the plane, I told him, "Has to be tough when you have some fame and people just want to chat you up." He said, "Naw, you were okay, man."

I'll bet you he remembers me to this day. Not as the okay guy. But, as that "White dude who would not shut the fuck up."

yay! I'm famous!

Mediaite.com has a good take on it. Breaking it down, here's Jill Scott's quote:

Here's her follow-up -- from the same article:

Gee, I wonder which quote did not get any play from Drudge.

Mediaite: Jill Scott

IMDB shows that as being someone named Omari Hardwick.

Common was in "Wanted," which I thought was also a rather fun comics-to-film adaptation.

If we get too many of "those people" in the "White House" at once they might just decide to change it's name to something more nuetral. Or perhaps they might even do something worse to destroy True American™ values, you just can't trust "those" people after all.

Yeah, I only checked because I thought if he had been in both Smokin' Aces and Kick-Ass, that would have been pretty damn cool. I liked both of those movies more than a little bit.

I saw this story this morning, I can't believe it. Common is one of my favorite artists, his lyrics are intelligent and inspiring.

Waiting for the Lord to rise
I look into my daughter's eyes
And realize that I'm gonna learn through her
The Messiah, might even return through her
If I'm gonna do it, I gotta change the world through her.

It's classic right wing over-exaggeration. Common's a very talented man; I don't think Michelle could have chosen a more brilliant artist to come.

So hosin' sheep is good enough for us."

I would have voted for Kinky in a heartbeat over Governor Goodhair.

Never accept triumph of Islam in America.

Context here. These are the protesters against a proposed mosque in Sheepshead Bay Brooklyn.

Of course, churches can and do promote hate, violence, homophobia, xenophobia, and turn people against each other - just look at any number of 'em that have been featured on LGF - the Westboro freaks come to mind.

a little meditation on sarah palin as the only true prophet of ronald reagan from freeperville

When will this great lady formally announce?
The wait is beginning to worry me.
...
There is no other potential candidate more on target against the Obama regime than Sarah Palin. People who don’t see that are in denial.
...
I hope she waits longer to announce. Late August would be a good time to formally announce. In the meantime, just assume she is already running because she is.
...
“announcing” is playing the enemy’s game.
She has at least a year, perhaps more. Relax.
...
Sadly I do not believe that she is going to run. The constant media beatings have had their effect. Not that she isn't strong enough to withstand them, but I doubt she wants to put her family through any more. Can you imagine what one of her other kids who commits an adolescent indiscretion will be in for??
...
Sarah Palin reminds me of a moray eel....lying in wait...until the right “target” comes into view...then WHAP out she jumps and snaps ‘em.....she is a hunter...she knows how to be patient and wait for just the right time to take the prize....right now she can be effective saying what she wants without massive criticism from everyone in this nation who wants to continue business as usual.
Right now she has the opportunity to say what she wants without as much interference. She is also a player of sports...she knows how to lay out a game plan. Those who want her to hurry up and get in the game evidently aren’t used to using strategy to win....and those who sit on the sidelines during a game are able to view the big picture of what is going on on the field.
Generals use height to observe the battle and to direct from their positions. She is aware of all of these tactics and when the time is right...and she is ready for the battle ahead...she’ll let us know. Until then, I just keep on enjoying her smack downs!! She has my vote...in the race or not.
I REFUSE to support an establishment candidate no matter who it is. If the people in this country are too stupid to see what Obama is doing and want to hand us a GOP candidate that is the same same but different...then we have had it....but I can’t be a part of it...period! My vote, should that happen, will be a protest vote.
...
Sarah appears to me as a volcano, where the pressure to release (announce) is building up, when it does hopefully it will be like Krakatoa.
...
You still think the way forward is the
Republicans?
You need a checkup.

she appears to me more like the volcano is gonna like spew and then a bunch of flying monkeys come out and oh the poppies surrender dorothy surrender dorothy...

If they really think Sarah Palin is going to be riding a white horse to save them, they're delusional. She's not even that well liked within her own party let alone the general populace. A lot in the establishment think she is what cost them the senate and candidates she backed like Angle, O'Donnell, and Buck support that thesis.

More video from the LSU flag burning riot, 6 minutes this time:

Among other things, the mob chanted "go to hell, hippies," interspersed with calls for the erstwhile flag-burner Benjamin Haas to be deported or crucified. Haas did not in fact burn the flag, possibly because he had been repeatedly hit by water balloons and hosed down with Super-soakers.
One commenter declares how proud he is of the LSU student body. Sure, a thousand people manage to keep one delusional nitwit from beclowning himself and they are pleased with themselves, not to mention that the Baton Rouge cops might have had better things to do.
I also spotted an apparent ROTC type in uniform. His commanders need to have some words with him about going to a political protest in uniform.

The comments that were being posted since yesterday on the Fox website articles on this have been more incredible than usual. They seem to fit into three categories:
(1) Fox followers who've been programmed to hate Obama and just want to use this as a pretext - if Obama had sneezed instead, these are the people who would rallly to accuse him of germ warfare.
(2) Those among Fox's following who post comments like "it's trash inviting trash" often followed by the projection of accusing Obama of being a racist.
(3) Those among Fox's following that are basically category (2) but are explicit about their real issue being that they resent seeing black people in the white house.

Fox has really hit bottom on this one. I hadn't realized until checking here that it was other right-wing sites also.
