I must say, I thought Arnold’s apology was classy and admirable. All that really matters is that the children are taken care of. Still, it is sad that so few politicians are people one can look up to. I consider President Obama an exception; I really think he’s a thoroughly admirably guy, even when I occasionally disagree with some position of his. I used to admire Reagan (still do), and I used to admire Alan Greenspan (not so much anymore). But in general, America’s politicians, and our political commentators and pundits (present company excepted!) are a sorry lot.

Schwartenegger - IIRC, when he first ran for governor, the Republicans spent a lot of time talking about amending the Constitution to permit foreign-born citizens to run for President.

And on an unrelated topic, Corsi’s book on Obama birth certificate being a fake was officially published today.

Roughly 25% of heterosexual marriages in the US have partners who cheat, often for long periods of time. We shouldn’t have higher expectations for our politicians than we have for ourselves, particularly when we don’t select candidates based on their marital fidelity.

I think that a big part of being a successful politician is needing to be winning, lovable…seductive.

It’s part of their personality, they don’t turn it off when they leave the podium.

Many pro-life folks put in that position become instantly pro-choice when something like this happens.

Not trying to stir up the debate, and not throwing stones. Just an observation.

I will not know exactly where I stand on the issue until I am in a similar situation (not that I am planning to be).

Ignoring for now the higher expectations for our politicians part, is it OK if some of us have standards a little bit higher than “Cheating happens”? I know this is not exactly a new concept, but it seems we either need to get over doing it or change how we define a committed relationship.

It was a brief infatuation. Arnold was fun, but he’s not a socon and he’s not a whiner, two characteristics which made a certain sort of Republican fall out of love with him quickly.

The reality is that if you start from the supposition that some 40-50% of men are unfaithful during the course of their marriage, and that politicians and other famous people are typically both outgoing, and risk takers, there is no surprise here. I expect that the numbers for politicians are closer to 70% unfaithful.

I also think part of it is just the way people look at gender and cheating and sex. For a man, it’s what you do if you’re desired and powerful and is almost half expected. For women, that’s not really the way most people think about it. Sleeping with a staffer would probably be seen as being submissive.

It may also just be that there are still fewer women in politics and they still need to work harder just to be given the time of day to a degree.

In terms our of personal worlds? Ourselves, our partners and the people we know? Yes, it’s totally fine to have higher standards.

But there are roughly 500 “national” elected officials at any given time (congress, governors and the potus/vp). The vast majority of whom are married. So at any given time there should be at least 100 of these guys who’ve had affairs. It’s not terribly exiting when the news media finds out about one.

I do agree that we need to rethink how we approach marital infidelity.

Good on him to actually take responsibility and pay ongoing child support for that past ten years, and not pull a “John Ensign” by getting fellow senators to pay off his mistress for continued silence, and have his buddies at FoxNews warn him ahead of time of upcoming ethics charges.

Ensign, Santorum, Coburn, and Megyn Kelly oughta be looking at jail time for the crap they pulled to try to subvert the legal process.

The children are most affected by this. His son’s twitter message that “s*** happens” and loving his family “til death do us part” is heartbreaking. What’s done is done and can’t be returned as a defective product. Children process these things much differently than adults. Children never really “get over” divorce (I think that was an excuse to assuage adults’ guilt), if that’s where these two are ultimately headed.
