I know that the Pakistanis aren’t real allies, but we don’t have a choice but to keep calling them that. We need the Pakistani government to keep a lid on things in that country. Because Pakistan boiling over would be a disaster of the second magnitude.

HE’S BEEN RAPTURED! HE’S BEEN RAPTURED!
Doomsday prophet Harold Camping, who predicted that the End of the World would come on May 21, 2011, has gone missing ever since it became increasingly clear that his prediction is going to fail, even as local churches willingly stepped in to provide counseling and help to Camping’s devastated followers.

Approximately how many?
It should be remembered, often countries have little say in how they are governed, and who chooses who may come to power.
You know that Gates has said the US has no knowledge of the the Pakistani government being involved in any cover up.

And the stupid faithful already know what really happened.
John O’Leary said he believes that the unfulfilled prophecy possibly could have been a test for the true believers similar to the story in the book of Exodus of the ancient Hebrews fashioning a golden idol during the 40 days that Moses was on Mount Sinai meeting with God.
“That was testing the people,” O’Leary said. “They gave up on what they fervently believed.”
Yes, it had to have been a test, because if it wasn’t a test, it would mean they got conned, and that could never happen.

I don’t think there was an active cover-up, nor did Pakistan’s chief people know. But lower level people likely did, and failed to report it. Pakistan has a great deal of Islamic radicals , and their influence is felt in the government.

Sure, HuffPo’s comments pages are full of racists. So’re Yahoo’s, and Fox News’s and the SFGate’s, and the Examiner’s, and AOL’s. I don’t know about the WaPo and the NYTimes, I think they have actual moderation and such.
And that’s leaving the smaller blog communities out of it entirely.

Interesting, Fox reports:
In a Mideast policy speech on Thursday, Obama gave unprecedented prominence to Washington’s long-held stand on the future borders of Israel and a Palestinian state in the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem. Although his comments did not substantively differ from previously articulated U.S. positions, he sent shudders through the Israeli leadership by acceding to Palestinian pressure to explicitly enunciate this stance.
An essential part of what Obama proposed was that Israelis and Palestinians would also have to agree to land swaps that would allow Israel to hold on to major Jewish settlements, a point Netanyahu failed to mention when he declared the 1967 lines to be militarily “indefensible.”

Dear Google and/or Apple:
The two of you seem to agree about HTML5 for the most part; now would you PLEASE use your individual and collective heavy-handed tactics to make the world 1% better by relegating Adobe Flash (AKA “Macromedia Shockwave” to those of us who remember when Netscape 3 was the best browser, and who discovered Firefox when it was called Phoenix) to the ash-heap of history, right next to RealPlayer. There is no longer any technologically compelling reason to impede our computers and mobile devices with this absurd atrocity.
I beg you most urgently: Although I’m sure that spending unimaginable sums of money suing each other when you know the outcome beforehand must have some oddly satisfying nihilistic pathos behind it (after all, how else does one entertain oneself when one’s personal wealth is greater than that of several small countries), wouldn’t it be worthwhile — even if only as a rich person’s joke — to spend a few turns crushing the shit out of an almost universally-hated technology that should have died an embarrassing death a decade ago?

Saudi Arabia, UAE funded jihadi networks in Pakistan: WikiLeaks
Islamic charities from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates financed a network in U.S. ally Pakistan that recruited children as young as eight to wage holy war, a local newspaper reported on Sunday, citing Wikileaks.
A U.S. diplomatic cable published by WikiLeaks said financial support estimated at $100 million a year was making its way from those Gulf Arab states to a jihadist recruitment network in Pakistan’s Punjab province, Dawn newspaper reported.
The November 2008 dispatch by Bryan Hunt, the then principal officer at the U.S. consulate in Lahore, was based on discussions with local government and non-governmental sources during trips to Punjab, Pakistan’s most populous province.
It said those sources claimed that financial aid from Saudi and United Arab Emirates was coming from “missionary” and “Islamic charitable” organizations ostensibly with the direct support of those countries’ governments.

Agree. Arianna has always been about manipulating whatever/whoever in order to maneuver herself to more money and power. She doesn’t really care about what goes on in those items (like HuffPo) that bear her name, as long as the turnover is good enough. In that regard she is very much like Murdoch, though the latter was smart enough to figure out years ago that television would end up being more important to the bottom line than newspapers.

US prepared to repeat bin Laden raid: Obama
United States president Barack Obama said he would order a similar operation to that which killed Osama Bin Laden if another Al Qaeda leader was found in Pakistan, in a BBC interview.
US troops killed bin Laden in a covert raid in Pakistan earlier this month, leading to strained ties between the two countries.
Asked whether he would do the same again if another high-value target was discovered in Pakistan, or any other sovereign territory, Mr Obama replied:
“I’ve always been clear to the Pakistanis… that our job is to secure the United States,” he said.

In the end, he said, the decision came down to family. “I was able to resolve every competing consideration but one, but that, the interests and wishes of my family, is the most important consideration of all,” he said in an e-mail sent after midnight.

Daniels could have won. I don’t see anyone else running/close to running that can win right now. Once again they’ll pick the candidate whose turn it is, Romney. I don’t think Romney can win. Pawlenty might be able to pick up the nomination but he has a long way to go.

The killing OBL bounce is already gone. This election is still going to be about the economy. Jobs and spending. It was the perfect setup for a low-key personality with the right credentials like Daniels. Romney has way too much baggage, Pawlenty is an unknown, and Huntsman is a nobody from a nowhere state. The rest of the republican field, gingrich/bachmann/cain aren’t serious candidates and they don’t stand a chance.

Yep. If Huntsman reverses his backpedal (so I guess, that’d be front-pedal) on the need to address AGW, and continues to be moderate and reasonable on social issues, I’d vote for him. I’d even campaign for him.
Sadly, I don’t think he’d have a chance of getting past the primaries.
You continually think I’m in some way highly enthused about Obama. I’m not, at all. He’s not doing 1/100th of what he needs to to address AGW, and he’s not doing enough to address the other systemic problems in the country, like regulation of the financial markets and figuring out how we’re going to stop our slide into an ill-educated nation of sharply divided classes.
I am not at all a fan-boy of him to the extent you are of Daniels.

Man, nothing terrifies America like teenage sexuality.
[Link: www.onpointnews.com…]
An Indiana school district is arguing that two girls who were disciplined over online photos in which they posed with phallic lollipops cannot go to trial on free-speech claims because their behavior was “wholly inconsistent with the fundamental values of a public education.”The case tests whether school administrators can stretch beyond campus limits and regulate out-of-school conduct. The two girls, who were sophomores at Churubusco High School, were suspended from the varsity volleyball team after a parent brought their suggestive photos to the principal’s attention.
Under Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School Dist., 393 U.S. 503 (1969), a “showing that the students’ activities would materially and substantially disrupt the work and discipline of the school” is necessary to justify suppression of student expression.
…
But when Couch was asked in a deposition to explain what was disruptive about the photos, he could only respond that a “similar incident” had occurred the previous spring and “This had the — the potential of doing the exact same thing, being in the hallways, being in the gymnasiums, causing a disruption.”
We better ban all attractive students (and teachers) from school, too. They’re highly disruptive. I often lost track of what my English teacher was saying while staring at Betty Wruble’s ass.

I would just suggest we not pre-empt a moderate with assumptions like that. If we are to have reasonable hope for such anyway. It’s not over by a long way.

Palin Derps on Fox News…
Palin slams Obama, supports Israel
In an interview for Fox News on Saturday, Palin went on to speak in support of the Jewish state: “Anyone who studies history, studies the Old Testament, studies geography understands that Israel now is surrounded by enemies at all times,” she said. “It should be now that America takes a stand in defending our enemies in Israel.
“More than ever we should be standing strong with Israel and saying ‘No, you don’t have to divide Jerusalem, you don’t have to divide your capital city,’” she added.
She continued to attack Obama, saying his foreign policy “really makes no sense.”
“I’m going to call him our temporary leader because my goal is to make sure that President Obama is not reelected in 2012,” she said.

re: #172 Rightwingconspirator
Well, it’s a moot point to me unless he becomes sane again on AGW. It was really disappointing to hear him say the totally contradictory ideas that we should listen to scientists about the severity of the problem but that we shouldn’t actually do things about it that would have any impact on the economy.

Speaking of McCain and Palin, as there are mentions of both just above this post…Sarah’s taking a page out of McCain’s book of carpetbagging tricks and, like her former running mate, just bought a house in Arizona…looks like she has her eyes on Sen. Kyl’s seat. Oh, youbetcha…she’ll be a shoe-in for the Republican primary…this is an opportunity for a Democratic pick-up, and the worst thing that happens is Arizona has to admit that they elected Palin as a Senator for two years until she quits to run for President in 2014.
(and yes, Sen. McCain was a carpetbagger himself - story here for those interested)

Huntsman was a moderate for years - they don’t send extremists to China to be ambassadors. He’s just reinventing himself for the Republican primary season. Should he get the win, he’ll change gears faster than a 68 Mustang fastback at a green light on a Friday night and be so far over the middle Obama will look conservative by comparison…it’s the only way they could win the White House.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s associates expressed their satisfaction with US President Barack Obama’s clarifications during his address to pro-Israel lobby AIPAC in Washington. One of the associates told Ynet that the speech was “fitting”. Obama clarified in his address that the 1967 lines should be the basis for peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians, but would not be the final border.

David Frum is stuck on stupid….
At AIPAC Obama Chooses Escalation
That was a deeply unwise speech Obama just gave to AIPAC. The president did not ask himself the first question of political speechmaking: Why am I saying this? Instead he surrendered to his personal exasperation with Benjamin Netanyahu, and escalated a confrontation he had every reason to de-ecalate.
….
But here’s what I would guess; the president lost, not gained, friends in the pro-Israel community with his big opportunity at AIPAC today. And I’d guess further: the standing ovation for Benjamin Netanyahu when he steps foot upon the rostrum of the House of Representatives will be deafening.

Ladders are pretty well regulated by industrial standards. Just look for an ANSI reference and make sure the weight rating is good for your needs. OTOH, aluminum ladders suck around electrics.

How soon people forget things. I, after OBL, have already declared 2012 over. Just not going to beat Obama.
Don’t see it happening.
Not impossible, but it would take some extreme circumstances between now and then, ones which we cannot rule out: like a massive terror attack (I mean something twice or three times the scale of 9/11) or a major natural/man-made disaster that precipitates a local collapse of infrastructure in a large region, one which could precipitate an economic melt-down.
But if the economy does not get visibly worse and America’s security situation does not deteriorate, the Republicans will not be able to field anyone who would beat Obama. And besides, anyone right-wing enough to win their nomination would be too extreme for the general election.

Life-improving tip #171:
At the conclusion of every otherwise ordinary interaction, imagine the British actor of your choice coldly and menacingly intoning, “So be it!”
Examples:
they: “Thank you for calling Pizza Hovel, may I take your order?”
you: “I’d like a large blah blah blah details details” (note to audience: it’s on thin crust, and does not abide pineapple)
they: “OK, that’ll be $blah; should be about 45 minutes”
you: OK, thanks. (hangs up)
imaginary menacing voice of Alan Rickman: “SO BE IT.”
-
your boss: “MM…. yeah… we have sort of a problem here. You apparently didn’t put one of the new cover sheets on your TPS report?”
you: “oh! I forgot.”
your boss: “MM… yeah… see, we’re putting the new cover sheet on all TPS reports before they go out. Did you see the memo?”
you: “Yes, I saw it, and I just forgot this one time, and I’ve already fixed it and it won’t happen again.”
your boss: “Yeah… so if you could just put the new cover sheet on your TPS reports, that would be great. And I’ll make sure you get another copy of that memo.”
you: “OK, sure thing.”
imaginary voice of Jeremy Irons, Judy Dench, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellan, John Hurt, etc: “SO BE IT.”
