TX Gov. Perry Signs Abortion Sonogram Guilt Trip Law

The Republican Party’s total war on women’s rights
US News • Views: 29,670

If the Republican Party is supposed to be the champion of individual liberties, personal freedom, and limited governmental intrusion, can someone please explain why Republican Governor Rick Perry of Texas has just signed a bill that orders women to be humiliated and degraded with a huge government-sponsored guilt trip orchestrated by religious fanatics before being allowed to undergo a legal medical procedure?

Rick Perry Signs Controversial Bill Requiring Women To Get Sonogram 24 Hours Before An Abortion.

Facing the state’s worst budget crisis in modern history, Perry dubbed the sonogram bill an “emergency priority” that allowed the legislature to expedite its passage.

Effective Sept. 1, doctors must perform sonograms before abortions, must describe the presence of internal organs or limbs and must make the fetal heartbeat audible. […]

“Every life lost to abortion is a tragedy we all must work together to prevent, and I commend Rep. Miller and Sen. Patrick for their hard work on this significant legislation,” Perry said.

Meanwhile, the House recently voted to slash $61 million from the state’s family-planning budget, which estimates say will result in an additional 28,000 unwanted pregnancies and 13,000 births in the state every year. Two hundred teenage girls in Texas become pregnant every day.

Although the conservatives who control the House initially refused to include exceptions for cases of rape, incest, and fetal abnormality in the bill, these narrow provisions were ultimately adopted in the final version. Women can choose or refuse to view images and hear the heartbeat of the fetus, but must sign a statement acknowledging the refusal before receiving the sonogram.

The Republican Party: taking America back … to the Dark Ages.

Rachel Maddow had a piece on this a while back... basically with the Supreme Court the way it is, Dem's are afraid that they might overturn Roe V Wade if a case was brought up to them which is why you don't see that many challenges to laws like this which clearly violate the spirit of Roe V Wade....

Abortion rates have gone down in most groups of U.S. women, but not among poor women, a new study shows. Among the lowest-income women, abortions are still on the rise.

The news about high levels of abortion use by poor women comes as the federal and state governments begin to make funding cuts that could limit this sector's access to family planning services.

Between 2000 and 2008, for U.S. women ages 15 to 44, the national abortion rate declined from 21 abortions for every 1,000 women to 20 per 1,000.

The decline continued a pattern seen since 1990, with the overall abortion rate among U.S. women decreasing each year.

The exception, however, has been poor women, whose rate of abortion increased in the 1990s.

And the new study, reported in the journal Obstetrics & Gynecology, found that the trend is continuing.

26 RadicalModerate  Wed, May 25, 2011 10:02:16am

This is par for the course for Rick Perry.
He was instrumental in the drafting of the 2010 Texas Republican Party platform.
[Link: politicalcorrection.org...]
Among the highlights:

Abolish the Internal Revenue Service and repeal the Sixteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

We urge that U.S. citizens who, because of religion or conscience, are compelled to withhold their full response to any census question, be held guiltless.

We urge immediate repeal of the Hate Crimes Law.

Non-US citizens should not be eligible for state or federal grants, or loans.
We urge Congress to repeal government sponsored programs that deal with early childhood development.

End Social Security.

We urge the Texas legislature in its next biennial session to enact legislation requiring a sonogram be performed and offered as part of the consent process to each mother seeking an elective abortion.
We support legislation that requires doctors, at first opportunity, to provide to a woman who is pregnant, information about the nervous system development of her unborn child and to provide pain relief for her unborn if she orders an abortion.

We oppose the legalization of sodomy.

Repeal the Federal Reserve Act of 1913.

The Department of Education (DOE) and No Child Left Behind (NCLB) have no jurisdiction and must be repealed.

We call on the Legislative, Executive and Judicial branches of these United States to clarify Section 1 of the 14th amendment to limit citizenship by birth to those born to a citizen of the United States: with no exceptions.

Our policy [on Israel] is based on God's biblical promise to bless those who bless Israel and curse those who curse Israel

We believe it is in the best interest of the citizens of the United States that we immediately rescind our membership in, as well as all financial and military contributions to, the United Nations.

As a resident of Texas, I am going to withhold commentary on Gov. Perry and his merry band of Christian Reconstructionists - otherwise I'd get banned.

Perhaps Goodhair will go into dishonorable retirement next year. He can then succeed Kent "Skeletor" Hance as chancellor of Texas Tech and preside over its transition to A&M Lubbock. Hance, a notorious corporate shill and Reagan-era fossil, started out with the usual grandiose "vision" but this turned out to consist mainly of suburban Dallas values, tea-party economics, and a massive spending spree that somehow failed to add even one new dorm room or any additional classroom space. The net effect is a delayed trainwreck and a nose-dive in the school's reputation, to which Hance and his hench-persons are completely oblivious.

UT may seem a better choice for TTU's ultimate debased fate since A&M has already taken over one nearby campus (the former West Texas State) but Goodhair is an Aggie, so A&M it will be. In fact, Perry is not just any Aggie, he was a Red Pot. Those unfamiliar with Aggie hagiography will not understand just how important this is. It has nothing to do with Pol Pot, Colombian Red or Acapulco Gold however (the 60s didn't happen till the 90s at A&M).

Thanks to Oliver Stone and his movie W, Hance is best known to the real world for having defeated George W. Bush in Bush's first political race, the 1976 Congressional election in District 19. I voted for Bush at the time and even knowing what I do now, I would still pick him over Hance. Yep, Skeletor is that bad.

You have to understand the "pro-lifers," who are also libertarians. Libertarianism doesn't condone the criminal act of murder, and such people believe any abortion, at any stage of pregnancy, is murder. So intrusive invasions of a woman's body with ultrasounds are justified as a way to prevent the crime of murder from occurring, in their minds.

My belief is that, until a fetus is viable outside of its mother's womb, it is not a human life, it is a POTENTIAL human life, and is still part of the mother's body, to do with as she sees fit. And viability occurs around the 2/3 point of a pregnancy, in my understanding.

Actually the libertarian pro-lifers do not have a leg to stand on. If they want to make abortion illegal, let them try that, however, I don't see any way a libertarian can justify forcing someone to go through any physical procedure, even a noninvasive one, to qualify to do a legal act.

They're allowing their dislike of abortion to override their principles of personal liberty. Mysterious how that happens when it's just a woman's liberty.

Same here. The less I say about this, the better, both for my blood pressure and my LGF account.

Pro-lifers hold admirable ideals, but we have decided that they are entirely unworkable and that we will allow abortions under certain conditions. I find the conditions being imposed by Texas to be extreme and obviously intended to prevent abortions.

You answer your own rhetorical question with: can someone please explain why Republican Governor Rick Perry of Texas has just signed a bill that orders women to be humiliated and degraded. The answer is in the word "women". They have no problem making life difficult for anyone other than a straight white male. If most corporations had black female lesbians as CEOs, we wouldn't be hearing from the GOP about over-regulation.
