Bon Iver: Holocene

And at once I knew I was not magnificent
Music • Views: 28,525

“Some way, baby, it’s part of me, apart from me”
You’re laying waste to Halloween
You fucked it, friend, it’s on its head, it struck the street
You’re in Milwaukee, off your feet

And at once I knew I was not magnificent
Strayed above the highway aisle
(Jagged vacance, thick with ice)
I could see for miles, miles, miles

3rd and Lake, it burnt away, the hallway
Was where we learned to celebrate
Automatic bought the years you’d talk for me
That night you played me ‘Lip Parade’
Not the needle, nor the thread, the lost decree
Saying nothing, that’s enough for me

And at once I knew I was not magnificent
Hulled far from the highway aisle
(Jagged vacance, thick with ice)
I could see for miles, miles, miles

Christmas night, it clutched the light, the hallow bright
Above my brother, I and tangled spines
We smoked the screen to make it what it was to be
Now to know it in my memory

And at once I knew I was not magnificent
High above the highway aisle
(Jagged vacance, thick with ice)
I could see for miles, miles, miles

He's a northern Wisconsin guy, from my hometown. He get's a pass.

But it's not even close to the best on that glorious album.

Shameless plug in for one of my favorite singers:

Maria Taylor's been around a while but she only seems to get press in Indy publciations, I hope her new album gets some press. Beautiful woman but she's an even more talented singer.

Huntsman tweeted yesterday that he's a big Captain Beefheart fan? I think that's pretty cool. But it won't help with the tp or any other faction of the gop. He's just goofing around now, having a good time, hoping and praying that the lunatics lose their control over the asylum by 2016.

So, on a personal note, it was a tough end to the week for me. My mother had a bad fall on Wednesday and has been in pain since. Thankfully, she didn't break anything so suffer a concussion, but hearing about it scared the hell out of me. And though I was able to get the meds I need, I'm still waiting to return to work (I can't explain more on this right now). I've got a game tomorrow, and that should be fun. Just the break I need.

Huntman was in a band, no? I have to say one of my regrets from my high school days is not having learned an instrument. But I wasn't in to music then as I am now..

I know how risky a fall can be...

I went to visit my grandmother after a bad fall of hers, one that was probably much worse than your mother's because she was much older. She seemed like she was barely half alive... she's gotten better now (at least as better as she's going to get given her age (in the 90's) but still its scary stuff, probably even more so when it happens to one we're used to thinking of being in charge of their (and our) lives.

Yeah for sure. I love The Stones but I really enjoy The Who a lot. I was at a Super Bowl party a couple years back when the Who played and some girl asked me if Baba O'Reilly was the same as Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana. Now I didn't go off on her since I am not a dick but as the son of a music nerd, I had to wonder about who raised this poor girl. Not that I hate Nirvana but how does one get those two mixed up I thought.

One of my favorite stories...

Man shows up at the gate of a city, asks a stranger at the gate, "I am thinking of moving to this town. How do you find the people here?"
The stranger says, "What are they like from whence you came?"
The man says, "The most selfish, thieving, awful people in the world."
The stranger says, "That's exactly what you will find here."
The man moved on.

Another man shows up at the gate of the same city, asks the same stranger, "I am thinking of moving to this town. How do you find the people here?"
The stranger says, "What are they like from whence you came?"
The man says, "I am only thinking of moving because jobs are scarce from where I came from. I hate to lose all of my good friends. Generous, honest, the best people I've ever met.
The stranger says, "That's exactly what you will find here."
The man stayed.

Libya Lets The Americans Go Home

In the biggest air campaign since 2003, NATO aircraft continue to operate over Libya, carrying out 100-200 sorties a day (several times more activity than in Afghanistan). In the last 140 days, NATO has carried out nearly 19,000 sorties. Most, (62 percent) of these were support (tankers, reconnaissance, transport). But, on average, over 50 sorties a day are combat aircraft carrying smart bombs and missiles. Targets are primarily hostile armored vehicles, trucks, ammo dumps and supplies of all kinds. Headquarters, barracks and other military structures have also been hit. A small number of attacks have been made on buildings Libyan dictator Moamar Kaddafi or key aides were believed to be in.

This is also the largest air campaign since World War II that was not dominated by U.S. leadership and aircraft. Most of the combat missions are flown by non-American warplanes and the U.S. only dominates in some support areas. But NATO commanders are directing the entire operation, which is something the United States has been trying to make happen since the end of the Cold War. The 1990s fighting in the Balkans was uncomfortable for the Americans, who initially urged the EU (European Union) to take the lead, but the European NATO nations insisted that the U.S. supply key combat forces (especially air power) and take charge.

Although Libya is mostly an air and naval (blockade) operation, there are some special operations troops (almost all European) on the ground, and European nations are running that aspect of the campaign as well.

We have to give France all sorts of credit for this. They are without a doubt the leader of this operation. They've done good this year, not only here but the Ivory Coast earlier this year.

Also, props to the UK, Denmark, Sweden (the first time they have been an aggressor in a war since the Battle of Leipzig in 1814), and Norway (who left the shooting part of it on August 1st as a result of running their ammo low).

True, and I'm glad the US pushed France to take the lead. Like the article said, this is making France find ways to sustain its own forces in battle. As a result, France will be better able to stand on its own two feet.

Oh hai. Weren't you at one point lamenting the lack of creationists to debate? Well, here you go. :)

If this is true it is further evidence of the effects of the Biblical flood that occurred within 6000 years.( Evolutionists have never produced a single creature that has ADDED genetic information to it's genetic make-up to result in a new creature.) This find is easily explained Biblically, but troubling to the evolutionary argument.

I like this rebuttal:

"Biblical flood that occurred within 6000 years."
>Biblical flood within 6000 years
>6000 years

According to the bible, the age of the world is approximately 6000 years old. Amazing! This creature predated the earth's existence!!! Oh, Bible...you so crazy....

Bachmann on why she worked for IRS: “First rule of war is `know your enemy’”

Pathetic. Especially coming from a congresswoman who relies on tax monies for her salary.

And for the farm subsidies she's always voting for her constituents. And every other war she might have supported during her tenure on the hill. Including having gotten near 1/4 million dollars in subsidies from the Fed for her "farm".

I'm going to start a new tax rebellion. It'll be something along the lines of "I refuse to pay taxes because it will go to pay Michele Bachmann's salary." Sarcastically speaking of course.

And why is it always 6,000? You would think they would say 6,001 next year. Then 6,002 the following year. It's always static.

It all has to do with things like the Ussher chronology. The actual date is October 23, 4004BC.

Seven ways Rick Perry wants to change the Constitution

1. Abolish lifetime tenure for federal judges by amending Article III, Section I of the Constitution.

2. Congress should have the power to override Supreme Court decisions with a two-thirds vote.

3. Scrap the federal income tax by repealing the Sixteenth Amendment.

4. End the direct election of senators by repealing the Seventeenth Amendment.

5. Require the federal government to balance its budget every year.

6. The federal Constitution should define marriage as between one man and one woman in all 50 states.

7. Abortion should be made illegal throughout the country.

The more I look at Perry the more I think he might not be that viable of a candidate. Sure, he's got the hair and whitebread good looks, as well as the requisite love of firearms and Jesus. But his positions are pretty radical, among them abolition of Medicare.

A couple of days ago he complained that "half the country pays no income taxes, and in DC they want YOU and ME to pay more? That ain't right." (Of course most of the tea partying Iowans in his audience would NOT be paying any more, but that's beside the point in identity politics.)

The gop is on the wrong side of this politically: most Americans don't want to raise taxes on the poor, and most Americans DO want to raise taxes on the very rich. (And the bottom half already pay all sorts of taxes, including sales, excise, gas, alcohol, tobacco, even property, that their EFFECTIVE tax rate is higher than much of the top half.)

This should be like a hanging curveball, the Dems should knock it out of the park. But they probably won't. Maybe there's something about being feeble that draws people to become Democratic polticians in the first place.

Palin Alert:

She'll be legally allowed to drink alcohol in two months.

But until then, Bristol Palin will have to make do with using food when making a toast.

The 20-year-old was hamming it up for the cameras while filming her new reality show with the Massey brothers Chris, 21, and Kyle, 19.

The untitled series, to screen on American channed Biography, follows Bristol's move from Alaska to Los Angeles with her son, Tripp, to work for a charity while living with the actors.

Bristol met Kyle, who starred in Disney's That's So Raven and Cory In The House, on the US version of Dancing With the Stars last year.

His brother Chris is a rapper and actor, best known for starring as Michael Barret in Nickelodeon television series Zoey 101, which starred another famous mum, Jamie-Lynn Spears.

I wish Biography would stick to biography shows. Bristol Palin doesn't seem a compelling character. She always seems over cautious in public, as if she's afraid of causing her mother grief.

However, there was one "Blogmocracy" thread that I feel I must bring up. Stalker "Bob in Breckenridge" took a trip into outright racism tonight with the following headline for an article about Barack and Michelle Obama taking separate planes to Martha's Vineyard: Obungler and Sasquatch take separate jets (again) to Martha’s Vineyard, costing us thousands. Referring to Michelle Obama as "Sasquatch" is in the same vein as calling her a "Wookie": It's a blatant attempt to depict her as less than human. There were only 8 comments but they were all in the vein. An example:

They don't mind people who have same sex at all, so long as they they're making laws to ensure their own criminalization? Feh, who knows.

I too am glad to see people getting over their dumb hangups, and never thought I'd see it in my lifetime, in any major way. So it's indeed a pleasant surprise.

You're right. And Mehlman didn't seem to have much of a problem with using same sex marriage as a wedge issue back in 2004. Then, like so many others, he can suddenly come out of the closet once they (or the admin. they work for) are out of office.

The most absurd self-outing has to be Michael Huffington (the former Mr. Arianna Huffington). He only admitted to being a "homosexual", not a gay man. You see, he found the "gay lifestyle" too icky to identify with. People made jokes for a few days, then forgot about it since he was never anything more than Arianna's puppet to begin with.

Good point. On that topic, how the hell did Larry Craig save his job, and does he have any chance of reelection? I have no sympathy for the Ted Haggards of the world, who influence policy against equality, and then practice not what they preach.

Sometimes America still amazes me in a good way. The growing acceptance of same sex marriage, now at over 50%, seemed like a pipe dream just a decade ago. Cali will approve it soon; the Right has lost on this one, but will go down screaming. In a decade or two, most states outside the South will have it as well. "America, fuck yeah!"

Nate Silver says Mississippi goes last, in 2024. Which is now only thirteen years away.

So I looked in on the Stalkers just now. For once, I'm not going to mock Rodan, as his recent thread was dedicated to ex-lizard "Momcat" who is apparently quite ill. As that is a entirely legitimate thing to do, I'm going to leave Rodan alone tonight (and I pray Momcat recovers).

An example:

I'm glad Bob and Chickadee were banned. Racism is indecent and has no place on a decent blog. It is a symbol of how low things have gotten for some of the Stalkers that they now spew racism.

WTF? EVERY president "lives it up on our dime." That's kinda the way we want it, since he's the leader of the free world and has unimaginable responsibility. Should he be staying at Econo Lodges and eating at Waffle Houses when he leaves the WH?

The partisan hacks on both sides nauseate me. They'll attack ANYTHING the other guy does, out of pure blind hatred.

These people reveal a lot about themselves in their attacks on the First Lady, and even more in their attempts to act as though she's doing something to them.

In another vein, I swear that to listen to these people talk, you'd think the Bushes flew coach commercial everywhere, and paid for it out of pocket. Seriously, how stupid do you have to be to get upset because the President and the First Lady are going to their vacation house at different times?

Not surprised that MS would go last. But how do they get there in barely a decade? Will the composition of their state legislature change that much in 13 years? Or the judges on their state bench? Also, in states like MS, there are actual amendments to the state const. that ban both marriage and civil union for gays, making the pathway even harder.

But Nate's not usually off by much, so again I say "America, Fuck Yeah."

Palin is indeed the master at it. Or at least, she was, when more cameras were following her around. DC actually broached the topic back in 2000 iirc, with something along the lines of leaving it to the states. Imo, the Cheneys were actually instrumental in blowing the roof off of entrenched Republican Party anti-gay hate. It was kind of surprising.

Barton: Gay Rights Are "Impossible," People Are Poor Because They're Not Religious

Barton goes on to say that because there is no species composed entirely of homosexuals that can survive, homosexuality is not a natural right: “When you find homosexuality in nature, it is an aberration, there is no homosexual group in nature that survives, it can’t, it simply can’t, in nature it happens but it’s always an aberration. What is normal is heterosexual, and that is a law of nature and it’s a law of nature’s God.”

Barton later asserts that poverty doesn’t contribute to a higher abortion rate, asking, “is it not the attitude that leads to poverty that also allows abortion and everything else? Is it poverty that causes abortion or is it an attitude?” He claims that there is a “spiritual solution” to poverty and abortion because people of faith do not “choose to live in poverty.” Barton contends that once poor people change their humanistic attitude that tolerates abortion, poverty will end:

Perkins: That’s what these groups are banking on, because in these financially difficult times, administrators wanting to be prudent, some of them not having enough backbone, will say, ‘ah we shouldn’t challenge this let’s just give in and appease them.’

I like President Reagan’s view, we don’t negotiate with terrorists. These are cultural terrorists.

They want to remake America in their own godless image, and we should not tolerate that. You know Tim, enough is enough. It’s time that Christians be bold and stand up for the rights that we have, rights that were won with the blood of patriots and sustained by patriots and by those that love this country, and it’s time that we in this generation stand up and defend those rights as well. We have those rights in this country but if we don’t stand up and defend them, using the laws, using our voice, and a lot of time that’s all it takes Tim, just stand up and say, I don’t care what you think, I don’t care about your atheist agenda. Take a hike, we’re gonna pray, we’re gonna acknowledge God, and if you don’t like it, so what?

Without "Comedy Central" there is no Louis C.K., no Lewis Black, no Doug Stanhope (all who got widespread recognition on CC).

HBO and Comedy Central today's Johnny Carson of comedians. You don't get a special on them? Don't expect to get your own sit-com on the Networks or FX.

Louis CK's show on FX is wicked good.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Things are heating up in Israel as Palestinian terrorists have escalated their rocket and mortar attacks against Israel.

And by Palestinian terrorists, I'm pretty much calling out all of them. Hamas renounced its hudna with Israel and the PRCs and Islamic Jihad all claimed responsibility for the attacks on Israel, which have caused several injuries and damage to Israeli property despite Israel deploying the Iron Dome missile defense system.

The terrorists are firing these rockets and mortars with the intent to kill and maim as many Israeli civilians as possible; Israel's retaliatory strikes are intended to kill the terrorists attacking Israel, but inevitably hit civilians precisely because the terrorists hide behind human shields.

The terrorists have no qualms about doing so - and it perpetuates the grievances against Israel even though Israel would not have carried out these latest airstrikes but for Israel being attacked in the first place.

[Link: www.montrealgazette.com...]

A woman who was bound and sexually assaulted by her then-neighbour, Col. Russell Williams says the police left her tied up for five hours after responding to her 911 call.

Laurie Massicotte says Ontario Provincial Police officers told her they had to leave her in the harness, fashioned by Williams, until an OPP photographer arrived to take pictures of her in the restraint.

“I was left for five hours, still in my harness, still tied up, naked, lying under a comforter,” Massicotte, 47, told the Ottawa Citizen in a telephone interview Friday.

“Five hours, no medical attention. I was in total shock. I didn’t know what the heck was going on.”

Under Food Stamp guidelines, they list what is and isn't considered food.

But nanny stater Bloomberg is concerned about the poor masses drinking soda as why they get fat, but ignores that so many people can buy supersized portions, including 40 ounce porterhouses that could feed a family of 4 as a single dinner entre.

Fruit juices pack on the calories and sugars too, but they're considered healthy because they have vitamins and minerals - but if obesity is your thing, then reducing caloric intake is key. Doesn't matter where it's coming from.

No, the real reason for the obesity epidemic is that so many people spend so much time in front of a tv or computer screen and not enough time exercising. Increase exercise and you'd see obesity rates decline, but that's not something you can mandate; "limiting" what you can eat is.

If soda is an option, many (and I mean a lot) of people will ONLY drink soda, leading to a nutritional deficiency.

I think it was Obdicut that linked stats about the number of malnurished in a certain state.

It's not the most cosmopolitan city in Florida, but has a nice big scenic river running thru the middle of it. Great highway infrastructure, good surfing beaches 30 min away.
It still has a "on the outskirts of rural Florida" feel to it.

re: #296 Cannadian Club Akbar

As are shiners. You just need a bait net. Or buy a mullet net and catch mullet. Mmmm, smoked mullet...

Maximo Point Smoked Mullet

6 dressed mullet of medium size, butterfly cut or spinal split if possible
3/4 cup salt
1 package prepared crab boil
1 gallon water
1/4 cup olive oil
1 pound hickory chips, soaked in 2 quarts of water overnight

The traditional way of preparing the whole mullet is to remove the head just above where the collarbone would be if fish had collarbones and cut along the backbone almost to the tail so that the mullet lies flat in one piece. Wash the fillets until clean. Add salt and crab boil to the water and stir until dissolved. Pour this seasoned brine over the mullet and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Remove from brine and rinse in cold water; then dry.

If using a cooker designed specifically for smoking, then follow the manufacturer's instructions for use. if you are using a smoker with shelves and a water pan, arrange the fish on the lowest shelves in the smoker. The water pan should be filled about half full with leftover water from the hickory chips. Close the smoker's lid and open the vent slightly to keep smoke and air circulating. Estimated time is 1-1/2 to 2 hours.

If you are using charcoal or wood fire in a traditional barbecue grill with cover or hood, here are professional smoker's tips: Let the fire burn down to a low, glowing, even heat. Cover with wet (over-night soaked then drained and partially dried) hickory chips. The chips make the smoke. Place the fish on a well oiled grill, skin side down, about 4 too 6 inches from the smoking coals. Baste fish well with oil at the beginning and occasionally during cooking. Covert and smoke for 1-1/2 to 2 hours or until the mullet flake easily when tested with a fork. Add remaining chips as necessary to keep the fire smoking. DO NOT put the fire out with too many chips, and do not open the cooker too often, venting the smoke and heat. Small twigs of red bay and bay leaves added during the last twenty minutes of smoking will add pleasant flavoring. what we're describing here obviously is what well could be called a delicate balance!

If you're using mullet fillets instead of the traditional spinal cut, shorten the cooking time to 45 minutes, or even less if fish readily passes the flake test. With smoking, however, a little over-cooking usually is better then under-cooking.

"Jacksonville Florida, worth moving to?"

It's not the most cosmopolitan city in Florida, but has a nice big scenic river running thru the middle of it. Great highway infrastructure, good surfing beaches 30 min away.
It still has a "on the outskirts of rural Florida" feel to it.
I'm partial to the southside part from San Marco, Goodbys Lake down to Switzerland, cause that's where the majority of my friends lived.
Tho some of them were also in Ortega and Orange Park.
Good hunting & fishing also.

It's legit. Defense Minister Ehud Barak apologized for the deaths of the Egyptian security officers.

Defense Minister Ehud Barak on Saturday said that "Israel regrets the deaths of Egyptian policemen [killed] during the terror attack on the Israeli-Egyptian border,"

Speaking during a security briefing with Chief of General Staff Benny Gantz, Barak said that "the peace treaty between Israel and Egypt is of great importance and strategic value for the stability of the Middle East."

The defense minister was expected to open a military investigation into the deaths of Egyptian forces in the border incident. Later, a joint investigation with the Egyptian military will be launched in order to clarify the circumstances of the incident.

Kucinich is scheduled to address the event on Saturday afternoon, right after Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn. Other luminaries slated to address the three day gathering at Seattle's Myrtle Edwards Park include Wayward Bill of the United States Marijuana Party, representatives of "Moms for Marijuana" and "Gramma's for Ganja," as well as someone from High Times Magazine who goes by the name "Stinkbud."

According to an online publication called "The Weed Blog," a record crowd is expected. Last year's festival drew 150,000 people over two days.

Rescuer of kidnapped girl comes forward as undocumented immigrant

A man credited with rescuing a 6-year-old girl from an alleged kidnapper came forward Friday to say he is an undocumented immigrant.

Antonio Diaz Chacon, 23, is originally from Chihuahua, Mexico, and has been living illegally in the United States for four years, according to his wife, Martha, who is a U.S. citizen.

Martha Diaz, interpreting for her husband, said the couple are afraid of the consequences of coming forward with his immigration status, but "we know that if God put us there at the exact time to be able to save the little girl -- we know that he won't leave us by ourselves."

The peace treaty with Egypt is really that important for Israel, and they don't want to do anything that would really harm the security coordination between the two countries. If Egypt ends that security coordination, the number of attacks against Israel would increase significantly as the Gaza-Egypt border would be a river of terrorists, rather than the trickle that manages to carry out the occasional attack along with ongoing smuggling operations.

Urban Hero Holds On to Parking Spot for Eleven Years

Charles Mysak, a former lawyer and currently one of those guys who sells books on the sidewalk, has kept his '94 Honda Civic in the same Upper West Side parking spot for more than a decade. It costs him $36 a day, and technically it's a violation of traffic laws to hog a spot like that. Mysak has $470 in unpaid parking tickets, which might scare off a lesser man, but Mysak has principles. He believes that parking enforcement "is a conspiracy against the laity, going back to, you know, medieval times." Well, you've got to believe in something to keep a streak like his alive.

This is what I don't understand about the Palestinian/Arab situation.

When one country is doing something really well (like, well, just about everything in Israel's case), other countries try to learn why and adapt their systems to compete or at least enjoy a better level of whatever (medical care, industry, whatever).

The Palestinians (indeed much of the Arab world) seem to do just the opposite.

US judges rule for teacher who called creationism 'superstitious nonsense'

A public high school teacher in California may not be sued for making hostile remarks about religion in his classroom, a federal appeals court ruled on Friday.

The decision stems from a lawsuit filed by a student charging that the teacher’s hostile remarks about creationism and religious faith violated a First Amendment mandate that the government remain neutral in matters of religion.

A three-judge panel of the Ninth US Circuit Court of Appeals ruled unanimously that the lawsuit against an advanced placement history teacher at Capistrano Valley High School in Mission Viejo must be thrown out of court because the teacher was entitled to immunity.

Continues.

Also from that Fox article:

Antonio Diaz Chacon, 23, is married to an American and has been in the country for four years. But Chacon says he abandoned attempts to get legal residency because the process was difficult and expensive.

That's one place immigration reform is needed. Those circumstances should make citizenship practically automatic. Maybe a little background check and a small fee.

352 Our Precious Bodily Fluids  Sat, Aug 20, 2011 8:43:58am

Before you read this: Please don't judge me... I'm just sharing my story because some people asked...

First of all, just for some background: My mom died right when I was born. I grew up with my parents' extended family, so it was Uncle This and Aunt That and so forth for as long as I could remember. My dad had all sorts of serious emotional issues and he bailed before I was born. So you can see, my childhood was kind of messed up.

Anyway, growing up I feel like there was always a lot of distance between me and my sister. When I was about 17 or 18 I first noticed that my sister was a hottie.

I don't want to go into too many details about it, but basically what happened is that I accidentally stumbled upon a video that she made of herself. I understood immediately that she didn't make it with me in mind but I thought she was so breathtakingly beautiful that I watched it twice. I probably would have watched it a hell of a lot more, except that like right around the time I found the video, all this crazy shit went down and I had to leave home. My dad's family with whom I was staying got into some serious trouble with the law. I never talk about it.

Sooo... To be honest and backtrack a bit, I was totally lusting after my sister at that point. She was also having trouble with the law. In fact, she was in custody when I left home.

My friend and I went to go pick her up. When I saw her that day, after seeing the video, I have to be honest: I really just wanted to have my depraved way with her, right then and there. Looking back on it now, it's pretty messed up - but I think she had at least *some* feelings for me, too. She actually kissed me a few months after we came to get her... and it wasn't a sisterly kiss, you know? I mean, it wasn't like ridiculously sexual or anything, but it definitely wasn't sisterly.

After we left, we all went to crash with my sister's friends. On the trip there, my friend sort of implied that he wanted to get with my sister, and I got a little jealous. He's a good looking guy - and even though she was my sister- I just felt like he was competition. Not much else happened between us for a while except some maybe-sexy hugging.

Pretty much everyone in my life at that point was wanted by the authorities, so we all moved around a lot. I'm not saying that I'm proud of it or anything, but it was kind of an awesome time.

My friend and my sister never hooked up, I don't think - but I could tell there was some serious sexual tension going on between them. It was around that time that I got really badly hurt in an accident and almost died. But when I was in recovery my sister came to see me, and out of the clear blue sky she started gives me this awesome, slow, passionate kiss on the lips.

Sadly (although, I guess for the best) nothing more ever came of it. We spent a lot of time apart. I started to get really religious, so I tried not to think of her that way. It was actually going well for a long time- like I was totally over her. But I have to say, like a year or so after all that stuff went down, we were out sailing (not like a date or anything romantic like that), and she was wearing like the hottest bikini I've ever fucking seen and it brought back all the old feelings. Sigh.

A little while later she actually wound up with my friend from before (the sexual tension guy). I can't say I was surprised.

But even after she was shacking up with my friend, there was one time we were at a party... my friend was inside, and my sister and I were outside alone. It was a really intimate moment. I think something might have happened, except that I killed the mood when I told her that Darth Vader was our father and that I had to go face him.

SODA IS NOT FOOD!

Neither are Pork Rinds, Potato Chips and Energy Drinks.

They're all food. Humans are omnivores. We'll eat sheep's eyeballs, fried cockroaches, grass, carrion or caviar. Any port in a storm. High calorie, salty, sweet foods are just perfect...much better food than grass. But unless you live in North Korea, potato chips and Sprite can be so abundant that they're too much of a good thing.

Food stamps ought not be valid for 'foods' that torpedo health. The whole point of food stamps is to try to help people, not slowly poison them. But as the law now stands, well, sorry, but soda is 'food.'

I took last weekend off from the internet and was trapped in a hotel room with cable TV. I hadn't watched tv or cable news for years. Fox has become unrecognizable over the past few years. Their "normal" news coverage has become just as strange as Glenn Beck. My mom is showing signs of dementia (forgetfulness, obsessive thinking, paranoia) and it doesn't help that she's taken to watching Fox. I've seen other lizards comment to the Fox effect of elderly parents. I think I convinced her to get into therapy but I'm not sure anything will help at this point. At least she'll get evaluated if she actually goes but I fear the worst.

I'm pretty sure Israel doesn't want to retake Sinai but they may have no choice.

What? WTF? An outright war of aggression and conquest is hardly the recipe for long term security for Israel.

This incident, and more in the same vein, can be papered over. Egypt is more or less reconciled to the continued existence of Israel. But there is no security to be had in expanding the perimeter right to the Suez canal. The canal would be closed, inevitably, and that would cut deeply into Egypt's economy. The loss of territory would inflame Egyptians against Israel, and others would chime in. There would be another war, even assuming the initial war resulted in Israeli victory rather than UN intervention and diplomatic pressure sufficient to force Israel to return to the current borders.

War is dangerous and should not be embarked upon for light and passing reasons. That includes things that are weighty in their own right but light and passing in comparison to the gravity of war.

re: #108 palomino

Social Security is mildly progressive, taking into account differences in longevity, differences in rates of disability claims, and the way benefits are scaled. [Twice the working income does not translate into twice the benefit.]

Sales tax is neither progressive nor regressive; everybody pays the same percentage.

Federal and state income taxes are strongly progressive; the lower half of households pays almost zero federal income tax, especially if the earned income tax credit is factored in. Even within the top half, the effective marginal rate is 15% for most of that top half, going to 28% for the top quintile or something like that.

Gas tax is regressive, but it's not properly a tax. The money goes to pay for road construction and maintenance, more or less in direct proportion to how much one drives. In other words, if there were no such thing as gas taxes, and no free public roads, but only toll roads, drivers would pay about as much in tolls as they now do in gas 'tax'.

Corporate tax is progressive to the extent that the corporate tax cuts into the income of its top workers or dividends paid to the top half. It's neutral to the extent that it drives up prices or undercuts returns on pension plans held by all classes of workers. All in all, corporate taxes are mildly progressive.

Property taxes are regressive, a little, maybe. It depends on how much of what the lower half spends on housing comes out of its own pocket, vs. coming out of public funds. But the upper half generally lives in a bigger house and pays more in property tax.

Alcohol and cigarette taxes are regressive. But the poor do not, I think, spend most of their income on these things. They just don't have enough left over after necessities to afford it.

All in all, our tax system is mildly progressive. The effective overall tax rate on the bottom half is less than on the top half, and within the top half, the same thing holds.

Spending time away from the WH doesn't exactly count as vacation, even if it means being in Crawford, Camp David, Martha's Vineyard, Rancho del Cielo (Reagan's Western WH), the LBJ Ranch, JFK's compound, etc. Those locations become the WH for intent and purpose.

The President is on the job 24/7, and even when he's playing golf, he's in contact with key staff, and there's always someone around to get him information should the need arise for a presidential decision.

I don't deny any of the presidents their time away from the WH and DC culture in general. In fact, the WH/DC culture is so insular and insulating that people in the Beltway culture don't quite understand just how bad things are away from the Beltway. From what I've read, Bush didn't like the DC culture, which was why he spent so much time doing business in places like Crawford or at Camp David.

And as far as vacation is concerned, it's a working vacation in every sense of the concept - they might not be at the West Wing, but the President is surely doing work.

Just because he may be doing a few rounds of golf, playing basketball, clearing brush on a ranch, or any other sport or leisure activity that comes to mind, doesn't mean that they aren't on the job and aren't keyed in to key decisions that may need to be made.

It's why I can't stand everyone's fixation on Presidents getting away from DC for vacation or whatever - with that job, pretty much anything that can make it easier for them to do it - and keep them and their family sane works for me.

Well, you may remember that last year the hysteria was because the dog went on a different plane from the family, leading to the immediate assumption that the whole plane was FOR THE DOG, as opposed to the dog getting taken on board by one of the staffers filling said plane.

"Hey, Joe the Intern."

"I'm Bob."

"Who cares? Take the leash. Make sure he gets water on the plane. Give the leash to the FLOTUS's assistant's assistant when we land."

They don't think this stuff through. They never paid attention before to what presidents do, and how we keep them safe, and the standard of living they maintain as part of our presence to the world. They didn't know that Laura Bush wore Oscar de la Renta, and that her shoes cost five or six hundred bucks for a pair of pumps to be worn to a state dinner once. They didn't know that the First Family goes places on planes we pay for, not always in the most cost-effective way. It never registered, the way every president since Nixon appointing 'czars' never registered. Now it's registering, and they're hysterical and disbelieving, and in Marc Steyn's case, throwing around words like "imperial".

The mental minstrel show goes on.
From wikipedia:

White, working-class Northerners could identify with the characters portrayed in early blackface performances.[20] This coincided with the rise of groups struggling for workingman's nativism and pro-Southern causes, and faux black performances came to confirm pre-existing racist concepts and to establish new ones. Following a pattern that had been pioneered by Rice, minstrelsy united workers and "class superiors" against a common black enemy, symbolized especially by the character of the black dandy.[21] In this same period, the class-conscious but racially inclusive rhetoric of "wage slavery" was largely supplanted by a racist one of "white slavery". In some way, extended vacations from the WH are easier on security details than a short trip, precisely because of the sheer size and type of security needed at any one event.

You've got the main AF1, a backup plane, at least one cargo transport to carry the armored limos and other support vehicles, and then any other aircraft for support, air cover, and Marine 1 (and its backups). It's a huge undertaking.

Oh, and then there's the pressers who follow the President around.

"They did it too!" is also a reasonable marker of what's considered fair political discourse by who, but even by that standard, I think they lose. People said many dumb things during the Bush years, but I do not recall this sort of incessant harping on every penny we had to spend to allow the Bushes to do their job, much less on what they ate. I've been tired of it for a long time. At its core a teenage level antagonistic retort. The difference is that adults are using this logic to supposedly discuss adult issues. It also explains how the Tea Party was elected.

The Tea Party is, at least the rank are, primarily folks who are angry with how things are but don't really know how to fix them. They're angry with government dysfunction and blame it for the failing economy, but are slowly growing sour on the political trench warfare that has sprung up in the wake of '10.

somebody else here already noticed that we haven't had the annnual Incredibly Stupid August Controversy that we've come to expect over the past few years. personally, i think this is because they wanted to clear the decks so the nation could be now swooning over perry

since that really isn't happening, we are left with some lame snarking that they're practically phoning in

Thought so. Yeah. She's another one of those post-modern post-911 "conservatives". Liberals that turned into wingnuts overnight. Or those that were born wingnuts. Shock jock, muscleheaded, weirdos who could have made a living writing for a gossip magazine.

And Laura was hands off.

I remember the Left getting into a tizzy about government spending, but it primarily had to do with the war efforts and the Bush Tax Cuts being bought with the capital Bush received in the aftermath of 9/11. They were hacked over the "Deficits Don't Matter" mantra and predicted that the whole house of cards would come tumbling down once the debts started piling up.

I never did it with Bush. Heck, I voted for the bonehead in 2004. Didn't vote for Obama either but I still won't do it -- I've changed a lot since 2008. Changed as in I went back to normal after my 9/11 PTSD ran its course. I'm voting for Obama next year. And if a Republican happens to win I'll keep my mouth shut about their vacationing. To point out Bush's vacationing is more like a point of reference. Presidents do this.

Join the club, we're printing t-shirts. I voted Bush in '04, convinced that the biggest issue was the "War on Terrorism." Told myself that beating the terrorists "over there" was important enough to let other issues wait "til tomorrow." And I voted McCain in '08 because I worried that Obama would be the uber-liberal the Right was terrified he'd be. Didn't really have my Road to Damascus moment until this past year, when I came back here and realized that the BS I was reading elsewhere was just that.

It wasn't just Liberals worried about the Bush tax cuts piling up the debt. Maybe the republican establishment was not as vocal, but they had the tax cuts sun-setting in 10 years for a reason...they were afraid of the long term effect.

I think that's the fantasy version of the tea party. There were a few political innocents who were swept up in the post-election fright of the economy going to hell, but for the most part I believe it has always been people looking either for something to the right of the Republican Party, or something to move the Republicans to the right. If it had turned out to be a stronger movement, they would have left the Republicans behind. Instead, they took them over.

And the so-called focus on fiscal issues was always a ruse.

re: #410 lostlakehiker

Sales tax is regressive. Progressive vs. regressive is not just figured out by if it's a flat rate or not, but on whom the burden strongly falls. The burden of sales tax falls more on those who spend a larger percentage of their income on actual goods-- which is the poor.

I basically "saw the light" during the Somali pirate crisis that was eventually solved by the POTUS and the Navy SEALS. Up until then I had to painfully read the deranged arm-chair general BS from the right wingers trying to second guess the president. Even when the crisis was solved they kept right on complaining. The right wingers have settled into a perpetual state of complaining about the president. It doesn't matter to them even when he does the right thing. I've never seen anything like this in all my life.

I think some worried about that, but the impression I've gotten from the rest is that the 10-yr bit was only to avoid the Byrd Rule. They didn't have the power to make the cuts permanent, so they set them as long as they could, hoping that in 10 years, they'd either have the seats necessary to make the cuts permanent or there would be enough economic "good" done by the cuts that they could convince the public to support making them permanent.

Charles,

Something funny possibly with Firefox 6? When I use the strikethrough button it has no effect.

Test 1 2 3

It shows up as "del" in the code. But when I do it manually using "strike" instead of "del" it works:

Test 1 2 3

In any event the button is giving me "del" instead of "strike". Any suggestions?

Thanks.

OK. Signed back in using Safari and they look the same now. So it's possibly something with Firefox 6.
