Miss. Defeats Religious Right’s ‘Personhood’ Bill

Mississippi misogynists miss
US News • Views: 18,208

Fantastic news: the insanely misogynistic “personhood” bill has been defeated in Mississippi.

But they’re not giving up.

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Mississippi voters Tuesday defeated a ballot initiative that would’ve declared life begins at conception, a proposal that supporters sought in the Bible Belt state as a way to prompt a legal challenge to abortion rights nationwide.

The proposal was pushed by a Colorado-based group, Personhood USA. The group’s co-founder, Keith Mason, says he intends to renew efforts in Mississippi, either through legislation or through another ballot initiative.

The group is trying to put similar initiatives on 2012 ballots in Florida, Montana, Ohio and Oregon, Nevada and California. Mason said the group plans to pursue life-at-fertilization legislation next year in Alabama, Wisconsin and Michigan.

But they’re not giving up.

They never will. They'll keep trying with different versions of the bill until they hit upon a winning recipe, then use it as a template for a nationwide bid.

Indeed it is, the GOP's becoming its own worst enemy. As more polls come to this conclusion, they'll have one of two options: Continue to obstruct and try to rationalize it as being "good" or get out of the way and try to take credit for Obama's actions (see also: stimulus spending).

Good God. The Xmas tree industry seems to be promoting this.

Christmas Tree Promotion Now

The industry continues to await the USDA's decision on a potential checkoff program. The proposed program was published November 8, 2010. The initial public comment period was scheduled to close on February 7th, 2011 and was subsequently extended to March 8th, 2011.

The majority of public comments submitted and 17 of 19 trade organizations that submitted comments support the order.

It is still possible for a program to be in place to collect funds on trees sold this season to be used to promote Christmas tree sales in 2012, but action is needed soon.

---

A Christmas tree promotion, research and information order would allow producers and importers the structure to self-assess real Christmas trees to fund research and promotion similar to dairy farmers or cattle ranchers...

55 engineer cat  Tue, Nov 8, 2011 8:13:44pm

The economy is barely growing and nine percent of the American people have no jobs. Is a new tax on Christmas trees the best President Obama can do?

I don't visit Drudge often, and when I do it's usually by mistake. Anyway, wouldn't you think the ballot initiatives in OH and MS would at least warrant some mention?

Especially when the actual Drudge headline is trivial--Obama making a funny face at a little kid captioned by a scary message about his whopping 15 cent Xmas tree tax. Talk about creating a bubble and living in epistemic closure.

Christmas Tree Promotion Now

More from this link:

Real trees tell a positive story about local farms, environmental stewardship and cultural tradition. And they need the fair and sustainable structure such an order provides to compete against factory built, outsourced, plastic trees, which are dramatically increasing in market share and landfills.

The 15 cents will be used to have the Feds promote natural Christmas trees. This is actually going to help the tree farm seasonal growers.

Not on that bill they won't. Said wingnuts do understand that voting against a veteran's bill that does not raise taxes would be extremely bad politics. Nor would such a vote in favor be something you could really criticize. That's why the Dems left off the tax: Because Obama really wants this part of his plan to pass, its not being pushed primarily for political reasons. Rand Paul might cast a 'no' vote, but he might be the only one. I think this bill passes the Senate on a voice vote.

Blocking the veterans provision would be a risky political move for Republicans, who have stalled other popular aspects of Obama’s jobs plan -- including a provision that would have provided money to cash-strapped states to keep public school teachers and firefighters on the job, and another to invest in roads, bridges and other infrastructure.

ROFL. One of my FB friends is a Paulian. It's annoying, but I want to keep the friendship so I don't call him on it. Yesterday he shared some poll from Judge Napolitano asking which GOP candidate people would vote for. Naturally, Luap Nor had a huge lead.

Internet polls have yet to translate to actual votes for him, thank SRV. I'd never, ever want that lunatic near the Oval Office.

Yeah, I hear that time and again: "Paul's won the straw poll! And these internet polls! The whole thing's rigged!" Besides being unintentionally hilarious, it's also proof of just how disconnected people are from the whole thing. Most straw polls have been historically poor indicators of who would be the candidate, let alone president. And internet polls might as well declare "Vote early and vote often!"

There goes one now...

Texas Rep. Joe Driver Indicted

State Rep. Joe Driver, (R-Garland) who candidly acknowledged pocketing taxpayer reimbursements for travel paid by his campaign, has been indicted on felony abuse-of-office charges, Fox 4 News in Dallas reported Tuesday.
Driver recently announced he was leaving the Legislature at the end of his current term. Last year, Driver acknowledged that for years he had been submitting identical receipts, for airfare, fancy hotels and other expenses, to his campaign and to the Texas House of Representatives.

The Garland Republican admitted to the double-billing in an interview but said he thought it was appropriate — until a reporter asked him about it.

“Well, it doesn’t sound like it is now, if you bring it up that way,” Driver said.

“It pretty well screws my week,” Driver added.

Fundamentalist Christianity is like some perverse vampire in America - it just won't stay dead, yet it continues to drain the vital energies of this nation no matter how many times it has been banished.

That's because this country was founded by the Pilgrims, who were religious nutjobs who thought that everyone else was too liberal. It's been ingrained in this country ever since.

I am sick and tired of dealing with the forces of stupid.

True that. I'm just glad these idiots lost in the polls tonight.

I hear your point - but to be fair, it isn't the Puritans who are our problems these days. New England has long been a bastion of education in this nation. This crap doesn't fly there so well any more and it was changing dramatically even in the time of Adams. Too much business in the real world, and giant influxes of other views from many different immigrant populations knocked that out of them.

I think the real problem comes from all those 19th century "great awakening" tent revival types and their mega church successors. Not Christianity per-se, but the charismatic business of Christianity that links to money, intellectual poverty and politics.

True that. I'm just glad these idiots lost in the polls tonight.

Amen to that.

Indeed, it is not so much Puritanism as it is reactionary fundamentalism of the early 20th century, that has been trying to assert itself in American politics since the election of 1980.

It's just the early hours, you have to give them time. I'm sure by tomorrow we'll be told about "voter fraud," misleading ads, and all other kinds of excuses that don't touch on the core reality that voters simply got turned off by puritanism and restricting workers rights.

So he fancies himself in the model of John C. Calhoun, does he? I'd reply by asking the board who we'd like to cast as the modern day Andrew Jackson.

And of course, there is the matter of my standing reply to southern secessionists:

Good guesses, but the water crisis will hit Nevada first... largely due to Vegas. The higher temperatures will just exacerbate an already depleted demand as the Colorado river dries and rain diminishs even more and aquafiers are depleted.
