Video: Fox News’s Appalling Promotion of Environmental Ignorance

Keeping the right wing clueless
Environment • Views: 24,224

Here’s a pretty amazing demonstration of the crude reactionary agenda of Fox News, a compilation of their “coverage” of clean energy technologies. This isn’t just ignorance at work; Fox is promoting the interests of the fossil fuel industries, to the detriment of the whole world.

Meanwhile, in the reality-based world the rest of us try to live in:

Steven Chu Defends Investments in Clean Energy; Navy Secretary Mabus Says Clean Energy Doubters are “Wrong”

The Navy has always led when we’ve changed energy. In the 1850's, we went from sail to coal. In the early part of the 20th century, we went from coal to oil. We pioneered the use of nuclear for transportation in the 1950's. Every single time we did these things there were people who said "it's a fad." There were people who said "you're trading one very known source of propulsion or energy for something that's unsure - too expensive or just won't work." And every single time they were wrong. Every single time. And I am absolutely confident those folks are going to be wrong this time too.

Wind power! Don't make me laugh!

oh, wait...

The power answer for 402,000 Tucson Electric customers may be blowing in the wind. The southern Arizona utility now has its very first wind energy resource capable of providing power for 14,000 homes with the 50-megawatt Macho Springs Wind Farm in Deming, N.M.

The wind farm went online this week in southwest New Mexico with 28 turbines on approximately 2,000 acres of ranch land. Macho Springs was developed in an area with strong, steady winds and existing transmission lines to deliver energy to Tucson.

Last February Tuscon went through a cold snap with 17 degrees temps and 30 MPH winds. The city had to turn off their natural gas lines in 1/3 of the city due to reduced pressures in the lines because of heavy natural gas use. Lots of homes with frozen water lines along with a bunch of frozen engine blocks. They need this extra "green" power to substitute for limited natural gas supplies.

re: #42 rwmofo

Speaking of flat-earth, low-information individuals, fossil fuel industries get far, far, far more tax dollars than renewable energy:

Fossil-fuel consumers worldwide received about six times more government subsidies than were given to the renewable-energy industry, according to the chief adviser to oil-importing nations.
...
While fossil fuels meet about 80 percent of world energy demand, its subsidies are “creating market distortions that encourage wasteful consumption,” the agency said. “The costs of subsidies to fossil fuels generally outweigh the benefits.”

But you love, love, love it when your tax dollars go to transnational oil companies, don't you? They could kick you right in the butt and snatch your wallet from your pocket, and your response would be, "Thank you, sir, may I have another?" :)

Keith Richards .. a .. hippie?

in the interest of communication between the generations, let me clarify:

what "hippie" meant in 1968 was anybody with long hair, wearing blue jeans, listening to rock music, smoking dope, sleeping together without benefit of marriage or signing into a motel as "mr & mrs 'smith'"

and thinking your parent's culture was really "plastic" (fake, inauthentic, bland - worst possible insult. see 'the graduate')

what "hippie" seems to mean in 2011 would be what we oldsters would have called "hippie-dippy", e.g. purifying your crystals in the moonlight, thanking the carrot for sacrificing itself for your meal, etc

- Initiating a mitigation crash program 10 years before world oil peaking helps considerably but still leaves a liquid fuels shortfall roughly a decade after the time that oil would have peaked.

- Initiating a mitigation crash program 20 years before peaking appears to offer the possibility of avoiding a world liquid fuels shortfall for the forecast period.

Maybe along our coast lines where we know there are billions of gallons of untapped oil?

i bet with a little innertubes googling somebody could come up with a nice map of untapped oil reserves on american territory with estimated yields; also, new drilling permits the past x number of years, also new drilling permits over the past 40 years that have gone unused

maybe you could do that for us and show us all the places with oil that permits have been turned down for, with estimates

Just a reminder that the US doesn't have a monopoly on the supply of oil barons and their political puppets:

Canadian MP says oil sands opponents "treacherous"

In a sign of the strain the Canadian government is feeling over development of the tar sands, Environment Minister Peter Kent said on Wednesday that opposition legislators who campaigned in Washington against the idea were treacherous.

The right-of-center Conservative government was taken aback last week when the U.S. administration delayed approval of TransCanada Corp's proposed Keystone XL pipeline designed to carry crude from the vast Alberta oil sands to refineries in Texas.

The Conservatives strongly back the pipeline. [...]

Much to Kent's anger, two members of Parliament from the opposition New Democrats went to Washington this week to argue the pipeline should not go ahead until Canada has come up with a better plan to combat climate change.

"One of the opposition parties has taken the treacherous course of leaving the domestic debate and heading abroad to attack a legitimate Canadian resource which is being responsibly developed and regulated," Kent told reporters.

Neither the chief spokesman for Prime Minister Stephen Harper nor a spokeswoman for Kent responded to requests for comment.

In late September, two senior government officials said a few hundred people who protested peacefully in Ottawa against the pipeline were extremists. Alberta is one of the Conservatives' main power bases.

Speaking in the House of Commons on Wednesday, Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver said Keystone XL would "generate hundreds of thousands of jobs, trillions of dollars in economic activity and revenue".

Alberta is the Texas of Canada.

As for the claim of "hundreds of thousands of jobs" - well, that one is at least a 1.5Bachmann on the scale of believability.

That nasty EPA is being tyrannical again:

U.S. formally proposes MY2017-2025 CAFE standards

Does your car get 54.5 miles a gallon? That's what EPA wants for 2025.

The Obama administration on Wednesday formally unveiled a "historic" plan that would, if implemented, sharply improve US auto and light-truck mileage standards by 2025 – chopping America's greenhouse-gas emissions, and heavy reliance on oil, as well as fuel costs for drivers.

The new proposal pushes auto-mileage standards to 54.5 miles per gallon in the next decade. It comes on the heels of a finalized first step in the same direction, announced in April. That earlier step requires automakers to build an auto fleet averaging 35.5 miles per gallon by 2015.

T-Rex Erected on West Highway 2 in Broken Bow

Drivers along Highway 2 in Broken Bow will see a new sight as of today. A Steel T-Rex that is 13 1/2 feet tall, 20 feet long and weighing approximately 1600 to 1700 pounds has been erected at the site of The Bone Yard Creation Museum. Sargent Pipe Company built the T-Rex using a small Balsa Wood Dinosaur as an example. The museum which is expected to open in April of May of 2012 is the brainchild of Steve Sommer. Sommer says he has always wanted to have a place that explains creationism as opposed to evolution. The plan is to have fossils exhibited to show the difference in the two belief systems. Sommer also expects have workshops and seminars in the museum. The T-Rex can be seen across the street from V-Bar Trailers on Highway 2.

Never try to time movements in commodity prices when group-think has taken over. That gold is priced by panic/manipulation is something that I think most people realize after looking at the stuff over enough years.

Part of the whole fear industry, and that is what it is - a fear industry - that mimics as "news" in so much of our media is just propaganda. And that includes the current broadsides over the Euro, which serve to drive up the price of gold.

One thing to watch is that gold production has been less than impressive for many years - the discovery of major new deposits is a rare thing, indeed. Yes, production is up lately, but that happened because gold become so expensive that even the lousiest deposits become profitable.

This is one of my soapboxes - the false attribution of success by simply being in the right time or right place. Happens in commodities and markets all the time. Someone just happens to buy something at a (relative) low and the price happens to go up before they sell - and thus turn a profit. But could they replicate that reliably? No.

That's another thing that's hard to tell. I don't think she was exploited and trotted out in front of the pepper spray against her will. She seems like an experienced activist and probably knew what was going on. I still don't think the anarchists should be tolerated at the protests and the protesters instigate a lot of these incidents. This case might be a mistake by the cops but it's not like they're storming the streets macing random grannies. They'd rather not be dealing with this at all.

The results of HR 1207 are in: The first audit in the 100 year history of the Federal Reserve has revealed $16 trillion in "off the books" bail-outs lent out at 0% interest to corporations and banks all over the world between 2007 and 2010. That is $2 trillion more than US GDP, and $2.5 trillion more than all US debt of 200 years combined...This is literally your last warning to convert fiat and prepare for expensive food and fuel and utilities in the next few years at minimum.

Does this guy know that HR 1207 (which he claims supposedly audited the Fed) - never was enacted into law? It didn't clear the House or the Senate, and it certainly wasn't enacted and its provisions weren't enforced.

The provision was again tied into another bill, HR 4173, (Dodd-Frank), but it was a seriously watered down version, and focused on the Fed's lending practices during the bailout period.

A priest, a pregnant teenager and an 84 year old lady walk into the SPD:

When Occupy marched in downtown Seattle on Tuesday night, a priest, a pregnant teenager and an 84-year-old community activist were doused in pepper spray.

From the same incident, Ayn Rand deployed against occupiers:

Publicola reported that a short time after the pepper spray was fired, the protesters were lectured by a man in a suit who described himself as a “professional investor.” He told a group of protesters, including a young woman who said she has a job at Safeway but is underemployed, “I’m in the 1 percent; I’m not like you.”

The man also asked the woman, “Who is John Galt?” That question is the first line of Ayn Rand’s novel “Atlas Shrugged,” and the phrase is commonly used by devotees of the book to signal their allegiance to its free-market ideology.

“Pepper spray was deployed only against subjects who were either refusing a lawful order to disperse or engaging in assaultive behavior toward officers,” Kappel wrote on the department’s blog.

Kappel also noted that one man threw an “unknown liquid” at an officer’s face and was arrested. The officer was not injured.

In another incident, Kappel said a 17-year-old woman swung a stick at an officer, and as police moved to arrest her, others tried to intervene on her behalf, prompting a blast of pepper spray.

UTexas College Republican head says a dumb thing...

Hours after Pennsylvania State Police arrested a 21-year-old Idaho man for allegedly firing a semi-automatic rifle at the White House, the top student official for the College Republicans at the University of Texas tweeted that the idea of assassinating President Obama was “tempting.”
At 2:29 p.m. ET, UT’s Lauren E. Pierce wrote: “Y’all as tempting as it may be, don’t shoot Obama. We need him to go down in history as the WORST president we’ve EVER had! #2012.”

Her defense? Well, you can guess...

Pierce, the president of the College Republicans at UT Austin, told ABC News the comment was a “joke” and that the “whole [shooting incident] was stupid.” Giggling, she said that an attempted assassination would “only make the situation worse.”

re: #269 Killgore Trout

Cops Pepper Spray Pregnant Teen, Older Lady At Occupy Seattle

The pregnant teen is not alleged to have attacked police, two different teens. Your reading comprehension leaves much to be desired. From your own link.

Paramedics examined a handful of people, including a 19-year-old woman who was three-months pregnant, Seattle fire department spokesman Kyle Moore said. The Seattle Times reported on its website that the woman was taken by ambulance to Harborview Medical Center.

...

In another incident, Kappel said a 17-year-old woman swung a stick at an officer, and as police moved to arrest her, others tried to intervene on her behalf, prompting a blast of pepper spray.

See, the pregnant teen was 19, the alleged stick swinger was 17.

Also, there is some at least some doubt as to the police version of events:

It seems possible that the protester seized by police officers and hurled to the ground in Mr. Herz’s video might have been a young woman wearing a hooded sweatshirt, rather than a man. If that is the arrest described in the police statement, the footage does not support the written account, since there was no sign of anyone swinging a stick, and the initial volley of pepper spray was fired well before the police moved to take that person into custody.

The push is on to discredit clean energy investment

Liberals often react with bewilderment when waves of stories like this show up, puzzled that they've "lost the argument." But it's not an argument that they're losing. It's a contest of power and influence. When you see drums pounding for Solyndra, and then for other DOE loan recipients, and then for all energy subsidies, and then for the entire history of energy subsidies, it's because somebody is pounding the drums. There are people compiling damning research and pushing it out to reporters.

For bloggers and wonks, the right response to this may be wringing of hands and lamentations about the degraded state of democracy and/or media. But for the professionals involved in the promotion of clean energy and climate solutions -- the think tanks, advocacy groups, and trade associations -- the right response is to pound louder.

There's no doubt that voters respond to the need for public energy investment when it's framed in terms of ambition and national purpose. And there's no doubt that they turn on it when it's framed in terms of wasteful government spending. So which frame surrounds the information that reaches voters? That is the question that determines public opinion.

re: #209 Killgore Trout

Not many good drummers these days. There are good guitar players, good bass players, some passable singers. No good drummers.

Forget OWS. Now I really disagree.

Tool's drummer Danny Carey is pretty phenomenal.

And semi-babe Janet Weiss ain't bad either. Though Sleater-Kinney broke up. Boo hoo. Here she is banging and shaking on Letterman a few years back.

There may not be a Keith Moon around anymore, banging on the drums like he had 8 arms (hence nickname Octopus). Moon's kind of a unique animal; he violated all the rules and played drums as a lead instrument much of the time while Townshend kept rhythm with his guitar. He didn't just keep time like most drummers, he added density and texture and unpredicatability to the music. Here's a short bio and a live performance.

Saw and caught one on Tuesday. Today has been spent doing laundry on every piece of cloth in the apartment, vacuuming everything, and a basic low sense of dread for what the exterminator might find tomorrow.

The apartment building management has taken it well, been very cooperative, and is covering the exterminator cost.

The great mystery of course is where said bug came from since I have not been traveling recently and practically no one other than me has been in the apartment.

(To those not following I referenced the Latin name of the common bed bug earlier. Getting rid of them once found almost boils down to standing off and nuking the site since it is the only way to be sure.)

So it's just kind of sad to me.

And, you know, I got raped. Those kids at Penn State got raped. Accusing other people of supporting rape isn't funny, it's not clever, it's not acceptable hyperbole. It's just fucking stupid and offensive.

For me it's the intellectual dishonesty combined with the (conveniently) poor reading comprehension. Make a mistake, fine, but acknowledge it or I'm less inclined to think of it as a mistake. It's happened too many times and now it's a pattern.

re: #392 Talking Point Detective

Yeah - good points.

I shouldn't be suggesting that other people shouldn't take offense - although I personally find it more pathetic than offensive.

I was one of the people who was accused by name of supporting rape. I was not happy about it (and still can't for the life of me recall another poster here permitted to accuse individuals of such horrible things), but tempered that with the fact that I don't know him and he doesn't know me. The funny thing is that I share much (but not all) of his point of view on OWS. I merely object to his bizarre need to post about it in each and every thread and condescend to those who see it differently.

True. But he's not getting under my skin, and I can see that he's doing that with a lot of folks.

Dunno. Seriously, no emotional response. It's just Killgore. Doin' a war dance.

I gotcha. Same thing is with spacejesus. If KT wants to become another spacejesus, good. Not sure that's what he had in mind tho.
