Video: Nikon D4 Demo - ‘Why’

A stunning demo of Nikon’s new large format DSLR
Technology • Views: 28,713

Nikon’s new high-end DSLR camera, the D4 (successor to, oddly enough, the D3) is causing me to salivate, and I’m not even a pro photographer — its target market. Check out the specs on this awesome state of the art imaging device: Digital SLR camera Nikon D4. (And yes, it’s expensive; it’ll set you back about $6,000, and that’s just the body with no lenses.)

Better yet, check out this short film created entirely with the D4, a gorgeously produced documentary on extreme athletes — a long distance mountain biker, a kayaker, and a solo rock climber — with simply beautiful photography throughout.

1. Successful solo rock climbers.

So, did the climber take a rope with him? If not, I hope there was there an easier way to climb back down.

I took some nice pictures with it. It was a Pentax. And this is… fifteen years ago, when $100 was quite a bit more.

I left it at this part when I met a girl who wanted to climb the U-boat. It was the first time I’d done it, and it was awesome.

You can’t do it anymore, they moved the U-boat inside. Pity.

If the price of the D3S takes a steep dive, though, I might be tempted. Already have a couple of good Nikon lenses.

re: #4 Obdicut

I paid $100 for a camera once. Seemed like a lot at the time.

It wasn’t very long ago that a $50 camera could make the same images onto a $3 roll of film as a $500 camera (provided they both had the same $500 lens attached).

My favorite camera is still an Olympus OM2n. It’s ~25-30 years old, and for practical purposes useless as it’s getting harder and harder to work with film. It’s already relegated to artifact status.

There’s no fighting it, but there’s something very real being lost with the inevitable and inexorable transition from film to digital, both in terms of Real Serious Art Photography and in terms of “Mere” Family Snapshots.

I’ve been looking at very old photographs this weekend, some over 100 years old. It occurs to me that in many cases, the “story” that any single photograph can tell does not necessarily become apparent until years, or even decades, after the photograph is taken. For example: a blurry, slightly garish tourist-y photo of WTC-2 taken in 1994 tells a story that is very, very different on September 10, 2001 from the story it tells on September 12, 2001, and far different still from the story it tells on September 11 ,2011.

In the digital era, that story never gets told at all, because the photograph is blurry and the “DELETE” button is right there, next to the preview LCD.

Ship grounded off the coast of New Zealand splits in two

(CNN) — A cargo ship that ran aground on a reef off the coast of New Zealand last year has split in two, spewing debris and triggering the possibility of a new oil spill, officials said Sunday.

Hundreds of tonnes of oil have already leaked from the ship, leading New Zealand’s environment minister, Nick Smith, to call the spill the country’s most significant maritime environmental disaster.

The sections of the ship, which are about 20 to 30 meters (65 to 98 feet) apart now, remain on the Astrolabe Reef.

The Rena, a Liberian-flagged vessel, struck the Astrolabe Reef, about 12 nautical miles off the city of Tauranga, on the North Island, in October.

“While reports at this stage indicate there has not been a significant release of oil, with the Rena in its current fragile state, a further release is likely. While it is unknown at this stage exactly how much oil may be released, teams have been mobilised and will be ready to respond to anything that may come ashore. The wildlife response had also been increased to help deal with any affected wildlife,” Maritime New Zealand officials said in a statement.

Bad weather, which caused the ship to break, is expected to continue for the next three to four days, the agency said.

At least 23 containers from the ship have been confirmed lost as a result of the split, while another seven are thought to be in the water, officials said. Debris surrounds the wreck.

The basic issue is that the shipping companies are out for maximum profit margin. Every day a ship spends in drydock is one where she is losing money instead of earning it.

It’s legalized, government-sanctioned gambling, Varek. The company bets that, by the time their failure to take even basic safety measures bites them in the ass, they’ll have made several times when the costs would have been in profits.

Meanwhile, the D4 is quite a camera but I’m really satisfied with my D7000 at a fraction of the cost. This is the DSLR I wanted all along (MLU, autofocuses all Nikon autofocus lenses, meters with manual Nikon lenses, and a lot smaller/lighter than the D300). Its absence a few years ago is why I went for a D60 first which was a decent low-end model at that time.

I got myself an Olympus E-PL1, EVF & an adaptor to use all my Pre-AI Nikkor glass. Best of both worlds. Now if I could only afford the Panasonic/Leica 25/1.4 for micro4/3 to put on, I’d be a happy camper. But my 24/2.8 manual focus will do well for now.

DSLR? Nope. From film to mirrorless. No DSLR for me.

Well, I just completed the most recent Assassin’s Creed Game.

While the gameplay is awesome, the batshit insanity of the plot means that Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VIII, and Kingdom Hearts II still occupy my top 3 favorite games.

Even if Final Fantasy VII was one of the worst translation debacles in History. Though the German, French, and Spanish Translations of it were even worse.

Though I absolutely love the fact it is set in Istanbul (I refuse to call it Constantinople).

They also got the characterization of Selim correct. He was a nasty, cruel man. Though he was financially effective for the Ottoman Empire. They did a decent job with Suleiman too.

However, the whole overarching plot of the series and game loses both about 20 points. Out of 100.

Have you seen how big the debacle those languages translations were? It is legendary.

I’m a sucker for a good love (sub)plot. VIII’s big flaw was a Guide Dang It. Rinoa didn’t get any character development unless you had her in the party constantly. In addition, the Band Sub Game in Fisherman’s Horizon had to be done a certain way to get what is likely the canonical conversation.

Required reading:

Inequality and Bullshit

The conservative movement generally, and sensibly, has its cranks specialize their crankery, so that you have one set of people tasked with pumping up the fantasies of supply-side economics, another concentrating on denying climate change, another insisting income inequality isn’t increasing, and so forth. James Pethokoukis of the American Enterprise Institute is a somewhat unique figure in that he’s deeply involved in all these projects. […]

His latest project is to deny — or quasi-deny, or muddy the waters, depending on the day — the fact of rising income inequality. […]

The thing to keep in mind is that Pethokoukis doesn’t directly challenge any of these facts, though he wants his audience to think he does. […]

He [Pethokoukis] is, in a word, bullshitting. Bullshitting is not the same thing as lying. It is a higher art form, which Harry Frankfurt once explored in his classic essay, “On Bullshit”:

[The] statement is grounded neither in a belief that it is true nor, as a lie must be, in a belief that it is not true. It is just this lack of connection to a concern with truth — this indifference to how things really are — that I regard as of the essence of bullshit.

[…]

Bullshitting, not lying, is the natural metier of denialists of all forms. Pethokoukis compares the debate over inequality to the debate over climate change, by which he means that liberals are using false claims of expert consensus to stifle a very open question. I agree that it’s like climate change, but in a different way — a broad consensus exists among experts, but there are different ways of measuring it, which produce different perspectives on the shape of the phenomenon.

So where is this massive movement of (31+ / 0-)

progressives for Paul, anyway? Just curious, because there has been a scattering of unknown diarists here who have posted in favour of him, an occasional comment shows up, but otherwise, I haven’t seen very much at all. The wreck list is clogged up today with anti-Paul diaries. Where are all the pro-Paul progressives? Do they have websites? Mailing lists?

Just curious, because Daily Kos has created quite an anti-Paul front, which I find curious, as he will not be the Republican nominee and will only stay on through the primary because of his own vanity.

I think the only thing that Chait misses in that essay is the elements of the modus operandi were perfected decades ago by both the creationism movement and the tobacco industry.

As Chait says of Pethokoukis:

The thing to keep in mind is that Pethokoukis doesn’t directly challenge any of these facts, though he wants his audience to think he does. He cites a bunch of figures that pick away at pieces of the general picture …

The technique of finding some data in some study on some topic and then repurposing that data as a kind of evidence against the thesis at hand is a favorite technique of creationists. The problem arises in taking data out of context and/or misapplying results (usually through an inappropriate use of statistics.)

OT-

In the early 19th century/late 18th century records I am working on, women who died were referenced by their husband and parents, even if husband was dead.

Men weren’t, of course.

This means that women are easier to place in their family trees, because the men used the same 15 names and often the exact same name could be any one of five men, so I don’t dare match the datum to a specific person.

Irony.

The IDiots will not be happy:

Evolution of complexity recreated using ‘molecular time travel’

Much of what living cells do is carried out by “molecular machines” – physical complexes of specialized proteins working together to carry out some biological function. How the minute steps of evolution produced these constructions has long puzzled scientists, and provided a favorite target for creationists.

In a study published early online on Sunday, January 8, in Nature, a team of scientists from the University of Chicago and the University of Oregon demonstrate how just a few small, high-probability mutations increased the complexity of a molecular machine more than 800 million years ago. By biochemically resurrecting ancient genes and testing their functions in modern organisms, the researchers showed that a new component was incorporated into the machine due to selective losses of function rather than the sudden appearance of new capabilities.

24 played to Fox’s “red-blooded American” bread-and-butter and was thus a ratings hit for them; Firefly was one of those shows that takes a bit to get into (although the episodes I’ve watched on Science, I’ve liked right away).

It didn’t help that Fox more or less sabotaged the show by playing schedule games; the sci-fi Western genre hasn’t been one of their strong ones, but it’s almost like the network went out of their way to greenlight the series, only to kill it quickly and to keep it buried. It’s a testament to the concept of the series that the fans kept on Fox to release it on DVD and to let Whedon to do a swansong movie.

The name of the new species is Gerp’s mouse lemur (Microcebus gerpi), chosen to honour the Malagasy research group GERP (Groupe d’Étude et de Recherche sur les Primates de Madagascar). Several researchers of GERP have visited the Sahafina Forest in 2008 and 2009 to create an inventory the local lemurs.

They captured several mouse lemurs, measured them, took photos and small biopsies for genetic studies, and released them again. Prof. Ute Radespiel, Institute of Zoology of the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover, analysed the samples and the morphological dataset, and confirmed that the animals from the Sahafina Forest belong to an undescribed species of the small nocturnal mouse lemurs.

Why does my cat friggin’ love rolling around on my shoes after I go for a walk?

He loves it.
It’s like the crack to him

(yes, this thread prompted me to find where my junky-ass camera was lying around. Amazingly, still works.)

No deserves to be named “Gerp”, not even a lemur:

Maybe it’s a Republican…It’s mating call sounds disturbingly like “Luap…luap…LUAP NOR!!! Derp. Gerp.”

Because they’re Rockports?

So, for grins and giggles I’m watching the video from this morning’s “debate”.

What struck me from the beginning is how these guys want to take credit for “creating jobs” as politicians… and then argue that government doesn’t create jobs.

Cognitive dissonance, no?

Can were a really amazing group. This song could be released today and would still seem fresh and nifty.

And with that, I’m having some Ardbeg and then wending to bed.

Had a veal chop with foie gras tonight…(actually, that was my wife’s dish…I had the skate wing with brown butter…delish!)…I’m really hating July 1 coming so fast…I don’t know how well I’ll adjust to having to go to Nevada for fatty duck liver.

Oh, and there were veal sweetbreads on the menu too…yum! (not as crispy as Chez Spencer, but off the fuckin’ hook delicious)

Meanwhile, Breitbart and all of the other RWNJs are pure as the driven snow their freshly-starched white hoods and robes, right?

/do I need to?

Have you seen Goddamnedfrank’s page on that video that loon Dorkus posted? The video was by a white-supremacist and featured a shot of the hideous Turner Diaries. So your point is well made.

Santorum really failed last night and this morning. He just doesn’t have the “it” factor to command a debate or turn the discussion in his favor.

He’s gliding by right now on the crest of the “Not Romney” wave as it leaves Newt behind. But Romney’s right now leading NH and very like will win SC, so I figure within a couple months, we’ll be looking at Mittens being all but crowned.

Well, I think Lee tailored his somewhat, but it’s a really, really off-speed pitch that’s lobbed like a softball, apparently really deceptive.

Edit: It’s not thrown underhand, of course, I just mean the trajectory is like a softball.

yah, that’s it - found it in frank capra’s autobiography, where somebody warns him that bing crosby’s erratic, easygoing habits can really “give you the ephus”

Hey, sometimes the ephus leaves the bat limp and waggling futilely in the air, but sometimes there’s a good connection and you really sock it into the groove.

I’m guessing Andrew’s got no response to his friend D-bag posting that eurofascist’s Pinochet video advocating Turner Diaries style mass murder as a solution to what he see’s as the socialist Obama problem.

I had to go look up the Turner Diaries, which in turn led me to the Wikipedia page on William Luther Pierce.

Wow. What a sick, twisted, racist f-ck. Learn something new every day…

Save your cash Charles, my wife has a D7000 and loves it! She upgraded from a D90 that had the blinky light from doom going on, which wiped the battery out after 24 hrs.
