Clown Car Arrives in South Carolina, Thread Two
Here’s a second thread for the South Carolina GOP debate, because the first one’s filling up fast.
My take so far:
Get used to saying it: “Romney’s the nominee.” Say it ten times fast.

Charles Johnson @Lizardoid
All the Republican candidates are agreeing with the Obama administration on SOPA, except Rick Santorum.

Santorum didn't say that he supported SOPA, just that he agreed it went too far but something is needed.
That's the same position as the administration.

Well, just on what I've seen tonight, I'd say Romney's in for a shock on Saturday.
Romney will need some intervention on Sunday to keep him on his game for the next few weeks if he doesn't win. Even a win by a handful of votes would seal his "inevitability" narrative...but if he loses by one vote, he'll need to do something better than cry about future Democratic attacks.

The New Yorker review of "King of Bain":
The film is dangerous mainly because it conveys the sense of powerlessness that is truly felt by many Americans during this highly unusual election year. At one point, two sisters or friends—it is not clear which—sit on a couch and talk back and forth about the suffering that took place in Marion, Indiana, when Bain bought a paper company there and shifted its local factory elsewhere. One of the women says cautiously but cheekily that Mitt Romney is not really a supporter of small businesses. Her companion reprimands her: “You’re going to be on the hit list—you know that?”
“He’s a money man,” another Marion resident declares of Romney. “And he’s going to look out for the money people.”
The money people made this film during a cynical, distorted contest for supremacy among themselves. It is not journalism, but it is not the worst piece of demagoguery that we are likely to endure before November, either, about Romney or Obama.

Hesitation words. Until tonight I thought he would be a bigger problem for the Pres than is Gingrich.
So it was oration/homiletics that won or lost the day?
Mitt has always had a problem trying to sound like a fire brand. He is by nature a quiet spoken, boardroom type. He can lecture with some skill, but trying to express emotion on stage makes him look like he is constipated.

I tweaked the old Ann Richards quote on George H.W Bush the other night when talking with some friends about Mitt. Mitt's a guy who was born into a grand slam and thinks he hit it.

Some people just don't do well in that environment. Mitt is no doubt a sharp, well educated person, but he is so far out of his comfort zone in regards on what he has to campaign (essentially wingnut-lite) that it really shows when he has to insincerely defend the wingnut-lite salad dressing.

The unwritten rule goes that Republicans getting caught with their pants down is reprehensible, but forgivable if they seek forgiveness and promise never to do it again. While a Democrat getting caught as such is just proof of how liberals have no morals and will screw anything that moves, which is why they must be run out of office as the Godless heathens they are.

Public Policy Polling: Gingrich maintains 6 point lead
For the first time in our South Carolina tracking this month his favorability is better than Romney's, with 53% of voters holding a positive opinion of him compared to 51% for his chief competitor.
Gingrich's lead with evangelicals held steady today at 40-22 over Romney. He's also doing well with Tea Party voters (46-21), registered Republicans (38-30), voters describing themselves as very conservative (41-21), men (39-27), and voters in the Upstate (36-25).
Romney is leading with non-evangelicals (39-30), independents (30-26), moderates (44-23), and women (32-31). The problem for him is that all of those groups are a minority within the South Carolina Republican electorate.

ABC News To Air Ex-Gingrich Wife’s Interview Thursday
Marianne Gingrich recently spoke to ABC News reporter Brian Ross for two hours about her tumultuous relationship with Newt Gingrich. There’s no clear word yet on the specific details she recounted. But The Daily Beast’s Howard Kurtz reports that Marianne didn’t reveal anything in the interview that she hasn’t already said, especially in an August 2010 interview with Esquire. ABC has announced it will air the interview at 11:35 PM eastern Thursday evening.

Find an attractive (and that is a requirement) young (but not too young) female in your organization; have a fling with her; get current wife to divorce you; and thus you have to leave the Mormon church; marry the young flirt; come out publicly that Jesus told you that you sinned, and now you're forgiven, and everything is a-ok with you in heaven.

You're probably right, but I personally find an open marriage a lot less offensive then cheating on and divorcing two sick wives. I just can't see how it's worse then what's already know. Newt's firmly established himself as the person who will tell that Kenyan Usurper in the WH what's what. And that's what the GOP base wants more then anything else in a candidate.

I noticed that in Santorum's parting shots he took a dig against "global warming", no doubt to get some resonance with the "base".
The planet does its thing anyway:
NASA Finds 2011 Ninth Warmest Year on Record
The global average surface temperature in 2011 was the ninth warmest since 1880, according to NASA scientists. The finding continues a trend in which nine of the 10 warmest years in the modern meteorological record have occurred since the year 2000.
NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York, which monitors global surface temperatures on an ongoing basis, released an updated analysis that shows temperatures around the globe in 2011 compared to the average global temperature from the mid-20th century. The comparison shows how Earth continues to experience warmer temperatures than several decades ago. The average temperature around the globe in 2011 was 0.92°F (0.51°C) warmer than the mid-20th century baseline.
"We know the planet is absorbing more energy than it is emitting," said GISS director James E. Hansen. "So we are continuing to see a trend toward higher temperatures. Even with the cooling effects of a strong La Niña influence and low solar activity for the past several years, 2011 was one of the 10 warmest years on record."
The difference between 2011 and the warmest year in the GISS record (2010) is 0.22°F (0.12°C). This underscores the emphasis scientists put on the long-term trend of global temperature rise. Because of the large natural variability of climate, scientists do not expect temperatures to rise consistently year after year. However, they do expect a continuing temperature rise over decades.
The first 11 years of the 21st century experienced notably higher temperatures compared to the middle and late 20th century, Hansen said. The only year from the 20th century in the top 10 warmest years on record is 1998.

Why we're doomed #ItHurtzMyBrainzToCountThisHigh:
The National Fish, Wildlife, and Plants Climate Adaptation Strategy
just publicly released (for comments.)
By reading the ES it strikes me that whoever wrote this really didn't have the bigger picture in mind, didn't really make the solid case that needs to be made (not just for the causes of climate change by why the range of effects are so large, thus the breadth of adaptation required so large) and more importantly this "strategy" really isn't a new strategy but simply a greenwashing of the old "strategy", which put simply is just this: whatever gets done gets done.

Oh, he would need a few more black children to achieve that level. And the mothers of his children would have to be half sisters.
Just did a little Wiki-diving... was reading about Sally, Martha and Tommy.
Reading through their "begat's"? Mostly just obits.
Children's mortality was just unthinkable then, at least in modern American terms.

I've been talking with Ron Paul fans, and they are in a total state of denial. Everyone else wants Romney to be the nominee, and they have no plan B.

Just opened a box of cereal that the wife bought. "Super Colon Blow" or "Fiber Explosion"... something like that anyway.
When did they start packaging shredded cardboard?

Yeah as I said I tweaked it. H.W Bush had some arrogance to him too but he also was the Navy's youngest fighter pilot in WWII I believe when he was only 19. Romney is probably the most arrogant guy I've ever seen seek the high office. Outside Newt who thinks it was his patriotism that led him to commit adultery.
Kinda late response, but even though I disagreed with about 90% of his presidency, I could always respect H.W. Bush. I especially appreciated when he went skydiving given his previous experience off Chichi-jima
I only wish the younger had been much more like his father.

Are you sure that you didn't open a bale of packing material instead?
Throw some milk and a little sugar on that shit and it'll be right as rain.

No. Of that I am not sure.
It looked like the same shit that the crate was filled with that contained the "Major Award" in "A Christmas Story".

I don't. George W. Bush may not be as 'book smart' as his father (though he is not an idiot), but he demonstrated far more ability to connect with the common man and was more decisive than his father. Those two qualities, in my opinion, are more important to a president than raw IQ.

Closing in...
Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich has gained popularity in South Carolina in recent days and is now in a dead heat with Mitt Romney in the Palmetto state, according to a new poll.
Gingrich leads in the latest American Research Group (ARG) poll, conducted January 17-18, with 33 percent. Romney finishes close behind with 32 percent, while Rep. Ron Paul is in third with 19 percent. Former Sen. Rick Santorum earned 9 percent support.

Bush #43 screwed the pooch several times(Katrina, Valerie Plame, Harriet Meirs, immagration and afganistan) while ignoring the basic problems confronting him (the deficit, the housing bubble, economic problems after 9/11). Bush #41 took a good look at uncomfortable truths, made the right desiscions for it and lost an election.
At the end of the day having the backbone to do what's right instead of what's popular still makes for a better president.

Which is why Obama praises GHWB's foreign policy. It was stout, as is Obama's. But the turd in the punchbowl is, and always will be, the economy.
The Cons blame it all on Obama, but all you have to do is look at Canada's banking system (heavily regulated against derivative speculation and absolutely sound right now) to see that we lost our way during the Clinton/Bush years as far as regulatory control is concerned. We created "money" out of the ether and paid the price.
As Robert Hunter wrote, "If you plant ice, you're gonna harvest wind."

I'd actually argue that most of that connection was genuine. But it is true that George the Younger was lucky enough to have his ace political operative stay alive; unlike George the Elder, whose fortunes suffered greatly from the death of Lee Atwater.

It doesn't take a lot of brain power to be "decisive" to get other people's children to go kill up a bunch of people on the other side of the world.
Any sociopath not on life support can do that.

Exactly. The bolded part is what I wish his son would have been better at. We might have actually paid for the wars we fought rather than put them on the credit card for our children and grandchildren to pay off.
