The latest NYT editorial nails it:
South Carolina’s Divisive Message
[…]
Newt Gingrich won the primary by a decisive margin of 12.5 percentage points, and there is no mystery about how he did it. Two-thirds of voters interviewed in exit polls said they made their decision on the basis of the two South Carolina debates, where Mr. Gingrich exploited racial resentment and hatred of the news media to connect with furious voters.
[…]
It was Mr. Gingrich who pulled the race into the gutter, where he found considerable support. He repeatedly called Mr. Obama “the greatest food-stamp president in American history,” and lectured a black questioner at Monday’s debate about the amount of federal handouts to blacks, suggesting their work ethic was questionable.
On Thursday, in the derisive tones of a radio talk-show host, he said Mr. Obama’s cabinet looked like Mickey Mouse and Goofy. At that night’s debate, he lashed into the moderator for asking a perfectly reasonable question about his ex-wife’s allegation that he wanted an open marriage, saying it was typical of an “elite media” that was trying to protect the president by attacking Republicans.
That was just what South Carolina voters wanted to hear, the signal that he would not only challenge Mr. Obama but work to bloody him, to destroy his dignity. As one voter told a reporter, “I think we’ve reached a point where we need someone who’s mean.”
[…]
Haters gotta hate.

From Red State:
I can confirm tonight from multiple sources that phone calls are in fact occurring between Republicans in Washington and among evangelical leaders to raise money for Rick Santorum rapidly.
The sources tell me that this is not for a Santorum win, though the evangelicals I spoke to continue to hope it is possible. This is to stop Newt Gingrich. One evangelical leader I spoke to said, “If Newt wins, we won’t be able to make family values an issue in the general.” One lobbyist I spoke to said, “They [the GOP leaders in DC] are really nervous about Gingrich and they think he’d be a disaster. The best way to shut him down is to prop up Rick.”
Florida is going to get interesting.

The nightmare for the RNC is a brokered convention. It’s why Cantor and all these other guys are outright begging for the GOP base to finally rally around a single candidate. The worst thing possible for them is a primary season that drags on.

Erick, Son of Erick is starting to freak out for sure:
Peter Hamby from CNN notes what is going to be a recipe for disaster for Mitt Romney as he tries to relate to the Republican base.
In South Carolina exit polls, Romney wins only the “moderate or liberal”, those with incomes in excess of $200,000.00, those with postgraduate education, those who oppose the tea party movement, and those who think religion does not matter at all.
A number of those have been consistent through Iowa and New Hampshire too.
Mitt Romney’s exit polling reflects he can get the votes of Washington, D.C. Republicans and those who think we should leave the fate of the country in their hands. But he cannot get the votes of those who think we need to reform and reduce the power of Washington, which I venture to say is a sizable portion of the base.

Erick, Son of Erick is starting to freak out for sure:
Not sure he’s freaking. If anything, he seems almost gleeful that Romney, the visible GOP establishment candidate, is losing ground to Newt, seen as the base’s favorite at the moment, sneering at establishment folks predicting (rightly) that a Newt nomination would cause the GOP to lose the House and fail to win the Senate.
In short, it looks like what we’ve expected to happen is beginning, namely the schism between the party faithful and the Tea Party insurgents who think the former are the reason everything’s so bad and are little more than “Demoncrats” in different clothing.

Mr Orban and his cabinet have recently come under heavy criticism both at home and in Europe for adopting laws seen as endangering democracy.

Back in May, most of the people on RedState ranked Newt as a Washington insider who failed because conservatives revolted against him. Today they are hailing him as the second coming. Romney derangement syndrome has taken such a deep hold, I think many on this site would eagerly choose Obama if he were the only remaining alternative.Britt Hume’s reminder of Newt’s 58% unfavorable rating may be uncomfortable, it is also factual. Some are favorably comparing Newt to Goldwater. Let’s see what that brought us. Aside from electing Lyndon Johnson to his first full term, the Democrats picked up 37 seats in the House and achieved a 2/3rds majority in the Senate. The subsequent 89th Congress enacted:
April 11, 1965: Elementary and Secondary Education Act,
July 27, 1965: Federal Cigarette Labeling and Advertising Act,
July 30, 1965: Social Security Act of 1965, (including Medicaid and Medicare)
August 10, 1965: Housing and Urban Development Act of 1965,
August 26, 1965: Public Works and Economic Development Act of 1965,
September 29, 1965: National Foundation on the Arts and the Humanities Act,
October 3, 1965: Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965,
October 20, 1965: Motor Vehicle Air Pollution Control Act, (including Solid Waste Disposal Act)
October 22, 1965: Highway Beautification Act,
November 8, 1965: Higher Education Act,
November 8, 1965: Vocational Rehabilitation Act Amendments
April 13, 1966: Uniform Time Act,
September 9, 1966: National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act
October 15, 1966: National Historic Preservation Act,
October 15, 1966: National Wildlife Refuge System Administration Act,
October 15, 1966: Department of Transportation Act,
November 3, 1966: Comprehensive Health, Planning and Service Act,Yes, Goldwater’s nomination signaled the birth of the modern conservative movement; but 50 years later we are still trying to reverse the damage caused by his landslide defeat.
Yes the Republican establishment in Washington wants to hang on to whatever tenuous hold on power the party has. They know too well the price their children will pay if we have a repeat of 1964.
Oh, the horrors of… cigarette labeling.

Man charged with having sex with horse
[Link: www.tulsaworld.com…]
A man appeared before a Tulsa County judge Thursday on an allegation that he had sex with a horse while he was a student in Oklahoma State University’s veterinary medicine program.
Thomas Lyle Wilson, 28, was charged Oct. 21 in Tulsa County District Court with one count of crimes against nature. Court records indicate that his current address is in Wilkes Barre, Penn.According to an affidavit filed Nov. 2, Wilson graduated from OSU with a doctorate of veterinary medicine in July 2010 and was employed in 2009 as a preceptor at Legacy Equine Centre in Glenpool.
On Sept. 14, 2009, a veterinarian was checking on the horses in the clinic’s barn via a live video feed and “observed the defendant (Wilson) having sex with a horse,” the affidavit alleges.
The veterinarian approached Wilson, at which point Wilson stated, “I’m glad you caught me. I need help,” the affidavit states.
It happened in 2009 but it took the horse almost 3 years to tap out the complaint

Tabletop RPG or LARP?
76 | Kronocide Sun, Jan 22, 2012 7:48:16am |
No, this isn’t from The Onion. It’s a REAL bill that has been introduced by Republicans in the Oklahoma Senate. Introduced by Republican Ralph Shortey, Senate bill 1418 makes it illegal to make or sell food or other products that contain human fetuses, including in research and development. Republicans introduced the bill after a Christian Right anti-abortion group claimed that several major food companies are using embryonic stem cells to enhance the flavor of their products. The allegations never got off the ground and the accused companies have flatly denied doing such a thing. That’s because it’s not only unethical to use stem cells in such a manner, it’s also illegal under US law (and disgusting). Yet Oklahoma Republicans, eager to please pro-life groups, are moving forward with their bill which just so happens to have a few additional benefits for stem cell research opponents.

It’s utter insanity. It’s passing a state law to oppose something that has never been legal under Federal law. In fact, the relevant Federal law, the Pure Food and Drug Act, is more than 100 years old. Of course, to some in OK that would not matter because the president who urged its passage was Theodore Roosevelt and both and Upton Sinclair were both “Filthy Socialists”.
Actually, TR called Sinclair’s belief in Socialism “pathetic” (Sinclair was a actual member of the Socialist Party, so the label is accurate in his case). But the people who propose laws such as this do not really know history, knowing only “TR’s STATISM!!1” and “SINCLAIR WAS A SOCIALIST!!1” without actually know much about how either man formed his views, acted upon those views, or even how those views changed throughout their life times.

5th Edition and actually playing Great Pendragon Campaign. Battle of Badon Hill was last year. Actually, no. It was White Wolf. Then they sold the license to Nocturnal Media but with the proviso that they could continue to sell their old product which is fully compatible with the latest version. I think Greg had some issues with WW, but I don’t pay as much mind to the RPG biz as I used to.
That sounds right. Last PenD thing I picked up was a hardcopy of the new “Book of the Manor” and I got that directly from Stafford himself since it appears he had the rights to sell that hardcopy, but not PDF versions.
One of my characters has a county-wide good reputation since he was key in a plan to raise money by free contribution from the local barons that led to all the fiefs in the county having a jousting list for training knights (if they did not already have one.) Part of a plan to make sure the army was better prepared for war once we decided to stop paying tribute to the Saxons. This move was also in his own interest since he was Marshall and thus would be one of the leaders of this force. :)

re: #84 Dark_Falcon
It’s like the Sharia madness if you ask me.

5th Edition and actually playing Great Pendragon Campaign. Battle of Badon Hill was last year. And it is a generational game - the oldest surviving knights are essentially campaign retiring at this point in their 50s and the next generation coming fully to the fore as the focus beyond their current role as extra knights in the combat companies.
I was originally playing/GM this game in 3rd Edition a ways back.

I always thought Traveller was interesting in how (compared to most later RPGs) you started with a relatively aged and experienced character. And working from that base I guess one could build a generational Traveller game background. Lots of kids finishing their military careers and then going out to find out why Mom or Dad walked out and disappeared thirty years before…

What’s amazing is that they’re willing to throw hundreds of millions of dollars at a campaign they don’t expect (or seriously hope) to win. That tells you how much they stand to gain if they can keep a Democratic Congress from enacting legislation for another four years.

EU urges balance between Internet freedom and copyright
Governments must strike a balance between policing the Internet to protect copyright and upholding freedom of expression, EU justice commissioner Viviane Reding said on Sunday.
Reding was reacting to a US crackdown on hundreds of websites accused of offering pirated music or movies or counterfeit goods, as well as calls for new legislation to guard intellectual property.
However, that URL is supiciously long —quite a bit longer than an EICAR test file.

I just noticed something interesting about Tunisia’s Nahda Party. From TVTropes, though well sourced within it.
The first free elections were held on the 23rd. of October 2011. The moderate islamic party Nahda, or Renaissance Party won the most seats, 90 out of 217. Nahda leadership has promised to respect the large secular community in urban Tunis, opposes strict Sharia and the Saudi-Arabian model, instead presenting Indonesia and Turkey as better social models. Nahda also promised to uphold women’s and homosexual’s rights, though to what extent the promises will be kept is still questionable.
Well, that’s a first in the Arab World.
Also, last night, I had a fridge brilliance moment about the difference between the Muslim Brotherhood and the Salafists.

Actually, the entire way the GOP nomination process was written in 2009 had the effect of precluding “Iowa-New Hampshire-South Carolina and out”. By making all the Super Tuesday (March 7th) primaries proportional and keeping that formula for all March primaries, the RNC set things up so that the contest would run into April.
But they also set things up so April’s primaries would be almost entirely winner-take-all. Thus Dick Morris had the right of it when he said that the GOP primary race is set up to run into April, but that it will end fairly rapidly in April.

For being corporate media, of course. They aren’t like OWS, which for all its problems avoids doing large damage (disruption and damage being different things). Anonymous is rapidly becoming a band of cyber-terrorists. It’s been a strange mentality even from the beginning of the protests. They pretty much all abused the parks they were camping in. Slaughtering the individual Islamists will, as Jerry Pournelle has often noted in his science fiction, only buy time. The only true solution to the threat they embody is to turn off the fountain of Islamist radicalism that produces groups like Boko Haram, which is not ours to do (that last being one thing Mark Steyn is undeniably correct about). As long a Salafist imams and Saudi money are still being sent into northern Nigeria the threat will continue.

Pilot with terror links deemed a security risk accuses airline of racism after losing his job
A British airline pilot arrested over an alleged terrorist plot is claiming racial and religious discrimination after losing his job.
The pilot, a Muslim, was judged a security risk because of his close links to two alleged extremists suspected of ‘planning to use an aircraft as part of a hostile or terrorist act’.
….
Concerns about the two suspected extremists – one is a business partner of the pilot’s brother – were first raised when they paid for flying lessons and a light aircraft in cash.
During a raid on the London home of one of the pair, detectives found documents relating to the operation of aircraft, a flight map of the UK and literature from an Islamic extremist group banned in many countries.
The pilot, who lives in South-East England and was based at Heathrow, has known the men for ten years and rented a flat from one of them.
In October 2007 the pilot himself was arrested – and immediately suspended by the airline – but was never charged.

The Rabbi has a bunch of stuff to complain about, as he did on that blog post, which includes response to the incident with Dufus having an unregistered gun. Which was in his UHaul truck, parked a few blocks away from Zuccotti, with people coming in and out of it.
So why the bolded reference to the unregistered gun, which seemed to be a big deal here before?
That is a rhetorical question. I know why: infer that OWS is violent and people are bringing guns to it to cause havoc.

It seems to go a bit beyond that specific incident. Rabbi Gruber has posted a long explanation for his disenchantment with the group.
From the opening…
This letter will offer explanation. Some of you may also have heard the false rumor that I was working for the police! This letter will then also expose this lie as vicious slander,
That seem to be another favorite tactic used towards fellow protesters who are concerned about safety, rapes, drug use etc. What a shame.

Issue’s not why some schmuck had an unregistered gun. Issue is why the folks at the meeting thought it was worth 25,000 dollars of their bail money fund to protect a dumb schmuck like that from the consequences of of having an unregistered gun at their event.
My guess: they thought they were being revolutionary.

I’m still reading through the statement. It’s quite a damning indictment of the OWS mentality, covering up violence even at the expense of the safety of fellow protesters, covering for vandals and criminals, etc. All this was a pretty open secret but OWS and their apologists still continue trying to avoid discussion about what’s really going on.

I just said ‘I’m not taking credit’ and you seemed to think I was taking credit. Weird.
But the cute part is that the Rabbi posted a laundry list of issues he had with the movement but you chose to copy/bold only one part, which happened to be about an unregistered gun… from a guy who packed up a UHaul in South Carolina or that region, gun loving central.
So the issue is not what I couldn’t discern from your posts, it’s what I did discern from your posts: you like to focus on all bad things OWS, especially guns and rapey stabbianism.

It wasn’t a secret at all. People who didn’t like that aspect of things were very open about their problem with it, and sent out open letters on websites, talked about it on Facebook, etc.
What the response was here one night when I posted Michael Lerner’s thoughts on the matter was another issue.

I read the article. I don’t need to take it to heart at all. There were real problems with OWS from the start, it seems that most of us here at LGF knew that.
So I don’t understand why the campaign to ‘educate’ or ‘raise awareness’ about OWS, here, over the last several months. It frequently looks like cheap and easy leftist bashing.

Ah, an equivocation with LGF coverage of the GOP. There it is.
