Rush Limbaugh’s ‘Apology’

Apology != apology
Wingnuts • Views: 29,558

This is how the GOP gets off the hook for not distancing themselves from Rush Limbaugh. Rush “apologizes” instead, something that happens about as often as a total solar eclipse: A Statement From Rush.

For over 20 years, I have illustrated the absurd with absurdity, three hours a day, five days a week. In this instance, I chose the wrong words in my analogy of the situation. I did not mean a personal attack on Ms. Fluke.

I think it is absolutely absurd that during these very serious political times, we are discussing personal sexual recreational activities before members of Congress. I personally do not agree that American citizens should pay for these social activities. What happened to personal responsibility and accountability? Where do we draw the line? If this is accepted as the norm, what will follow? Will we be debating if taxpayers should pay for new sneakers for all students that are interested in running to keep fit?In my monologue, I posited that it is not our business whatsoever to know what is going on in anyone’s bedroom nor do I think it is a topic that should reach a Presidential level.

My choice of words was not the best, and in the attempt to be humorous, I created a national stir. I sincerely apologize to Ms. Fluke for the insulting word choices.

I don’t have to point out that this isn’t really an apology, do I? Limbaugh’s obviously hoping this will be enough to get some advertisers back and calm down the media firestorm, but after spewing unbelievably misogynistic hate speech all week to a right wing audience of 30 million people, his non-apology apology may not have the desired effect.

This is a classic ‘notpology’ and denial of the impact of words. It’s nothing more than a rhetorical trick.

I don’t believe for a second that this will end in anybody’s favor but his. Those Republicans that don’t declare that the “non-apology” ends the matter will just continue to shrug and whine “He’s an entertainer!” And the advertisers, especially those whole only “suspended” their ads, will quietly sneak back in within a week.

He still is lying about the Govt. paying for it. This is the meme that is sadly going to stick with conservatives for a long time. This is how the right wins these stupid debates, they change the subject. Obama will need to fight back during the debates….

8 wrenchwench  Sat, Mar 3, 2012 3:25:51pm

It’s not a ‘choice of words’ problem. It’s a problem of his having lied about Fluke’s testimony, and having ignored her testimony about the uses of ‘contraceptive’ medicine that have nothing to do with sex.

He’s a misogynist. He doesn’t care what women think of him, and doesn’t understand how men turned out to be also offended by his line of offensive drivel.

Women’s health means nothing to him. Sex means something to him, but he still doesn’t understand it.

Limbaugh is actually borrowing from Santorum and Romney in his defense of himself here. By using their keywords ‘absurd’, ‘choice of language’, he’s deftly covering himself with them.

11 wrenchwench  Sat, Mar 3, 2012 3:31:10pm

Address this ‘choice of words’, you woman-hater:

Did you notice in that sound bite Sheila Jackson Lee or Maria Cantwell or one of them talked about the strength that Sandra Fluke had to go before Congress, which is amazing. She’s having so much sex it’s amazing she can still walk, but she made it up there. It takes a lot of courage to ask for something free, folks. Takes a lot of strength to ask for freebies, doesn’t it? I’m being facetious. You know what the solution is here, why doesn’t Georgetown lower their tuition?

12 Charleston Chew  Sat, Mar 3, 2012 3:33:31pm

Limbaugh’s apology edited for clarity:

I did not mean [to lose advertising money because of] a personal attack on Ms. Fluke.

I think it is absolutely absurd that during these very serious political times, we are discussing personal sexual recreational activities before members of Congress. [Translation: I’m not out of order! You’re out of order!] I personally do not agree that American citizens should pay for these social activities. What happened to personal responsibility and accountability? Where do we draw the line? [What kind of world is it that we live in where a guy like me can say horrible things day after day, year after year and get away with it?] If this is accepted as the norm, what will follow? Will we be debating if taxpayers should pay for new sneakers for all students that are interested in running to keep fit? [Will we be debating if old people get medicine just so they don’t die?] In my monologue, I posited that it is not our business whatsoever to know what is going on in anyone’s bedroom [as long as they’re a Republican] nor do I think it is a topic that should reach a Presidential level. [It should only reach the Congressional level.]

My choice of words was not the best, and in the attempt to be [a hateful a-hole hiding behind the guise of] humorous[ness, a tried and true tactic that has served me well for many decades], I [successfully] created a national stir [as is my job]. I sincerely apologize to Ms. Fluke for [her not getting how awesome and right I am, which I can only attribute to her being a total femnazi slut who wouldn’t just put up with my usual] insulting word choices.

One way to keep this issue alive is to demand Limboob to apologize on air. A site statement is not enough after 3 days of hate to tens of millions.

15 mr.fusion  Sat, Mar 3, 2012 3:39:10pm

First, let me say “WOW.” As devoid of an actual apology as this non-pology is, I never thought I’d see Limbaugh even issue a statement this half hearted. He’s clearly feeling the heat…..not just from advertisers but I think ClearChannel needs to have a real discussion about whether or not they want to keep giving this guy his platform.

That being said, it’s not good enough. He called this innocent woman a slut in front of 30 million people. We’re way past the tipping point now with Rush. I’ll tell you this…if I worked for ClearChannel in any capacity at all I don’t know if I’d be able to continue. I’ve known some of the sales people at ClearChannel in the past and they are overwhelmingly young women. How could someone continue to sell advertisers on the Rush Limbaugh show in good conscience?

The bad news is that Limbaugh’s 15 million listeners generate a lot of money, and money trumps conscience often, even if you’re a young woman.

The good news is that Limbaugh only gets 15% more listeners than NPR’s Morning Edition or All Things Considered. I’m tired of broadcasters bogus argument that vitriolic right-wing hate shows get airtime because they’re so much more lucrative. Non-evil shows can be popular, too.

Perhaps the suddenness of Rush’s fake “mea culpa” is because he talked to his lawyer and found out that Fluke may have grounds to sue him after all.

Fluke Considers Limbaugh Suit

Georgetown University law student Sandra Fluke told The Daily Beast Friday that she may sue conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh because he called her “slut” and a “prostitute” after she testified that health insurance companies should be required to cover contraception. “I’ve certainly been told I might have a case, but it’s not something I’ve made any decisions about at this point,” Fluke said. The possibility of a lawsuit over Limbaugh’s remarks was floated today by Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney of New York, who said “we will be filing a slander suit against Rush Limbaugh. What he’s really trying to do is silence a young woman. It’s unfair, it’s un-American.” Maloney also suggested that Sybil Shainwald, a prominent women’s-rights attorney, would be the perfect counsel for the case.

The only thing that, in my mind, kept Sherrod from cleaning Breitbart’s clock thoroughly in court is his unexpected demise (I don’t know how the case is going to proceed against Breitbart’s companies, if it can).

I hope that Rush has a long, healthy life so that he may reap the wages of hubris and arrogance.

Because Rush’s “apology” wasn’t a true apology, it was a way to give cover to any advertisers that “suspended” their ad campaigns and a route for them to sneak back in and spend their money with him, because he still has his audience. Not only that, it was still chock full of lies, untruths, and backhanded remarks that showed absolutely no remorse at all.

Rush can just fuck off.

A Statement from David Friend, CEO of Carbonite:

“No one with daughters the age of Sandra Fluke, and I have two, could possibly abide the insult and abuse heaped upon this courageous and well-intentioned young lady. Mr. Limbaugh, with his highly personal attacks on Miss Fluke, overstepped any reasonable bounds of decency. Even though Mr. Limbaugh has now issued an apology, we have nonetheless decided to withdraw our advertising from his show. People are comparing this to the Don Imus affair, though it reminds me of something that took place around 12 years ago:

stopdrlaura.com

On March 1, 2000, five friends got together and launched StopDrLaura.com with the goal of forcing Paramount Television to cancel Dr. Laura Schlessinger’s then-upcoming TV show. Schlessinger had repeatedly called gays and lesbians “biological errors” and deviant — (one of our favorite Dr. Laura quotes: “How many letters have I read on the air from gay men who acknowledge that a huge portion of the male homosexual populace is predatory on young boys?”) — and we were outraged that Paramount would give a national platform to someone intent on spreading that kind of intolerance against a class of Americans.

Stupid joke, but made me smile.

I went into the Patent Office planning to register a few of my inventions.

I went to the main desk to sign in and the lady at the desk had a form that had to be filled out. She wrote down my personal info and then asked me what I had invented. I said, “A folding bottle.” She said, “Okay, what do you call it?”
“A Fottle.” “What else do you have?”

“I have also invented a folding carton.”
Again she said “What do you call it?”
“A Farton.” She sniggered and said, “Those are silly names for products and one of them actually sounds kind of crude.”

She burned me up so bad that I grabbed up her dang form and left the office without even telling her about my folding bucket.

Could well have been part of it. So Rush issues this “apology” anyway which was not to Friend’s liking.

Which is a bit surprising, since Friend’s apparently a RWNJ, from what’s been said here the past couple of days.

Friend might have been genuinely upset about what Rush said and his non-apology, given that he said he has daughters that age, but I’m sure that he also knows that staying hitched to Rush will drag him and Carbonite down.

Right. The prudent thing for a real conservative would be to oppose what Rush Limbaugh said all last week.

re: #81 Gus

Wingnut victimhood clock has begun. Any sightings yet?

Yep, here’s a mass email from our old “friend Scott Wheeler:

Democrats trying to smear Rush Limbaugh

Dear GOP Trust Supporter:

Rush Limbaugh mocked a witness at a congressional hearing this week and the Democrats found just what they wanted- a chance to lie and distort the facts to redound to their political benefit. THE DEMOCRATS FEATURED WITNESS WAS A COLLEGE STUDENT DEMANDING FREE BIRTH CONTROL!!!!! AND DEMOCRATS ARE DEFENDING THIS!!!

Now Democrats are denouncing Rush Limbaugh!

We must respond quickly by putting Democrats on the defensive over this or Obama will use this for another disinformation campaign…

We need to announce to the country that Democrats want you to take food out of your children’s mouths so they can use the money to buy contraceptives so that college students can be as promiscuous as they want. This is a huge outrage for this nation. This is all part of Obama’s reelection strategy to convince uninformed and foolish voters that Republicans want to make birth control illegal. I saw an email Obama’s campaign sent last night saying just that:

“Romney said he would have supported a “personhood” amendment for Massachusetts, which could have banned many common forms of birth control, including the pill, and fertility treatments such as in vitro fertilization. And he’s supported legislation to force women seeking abortions to first view ultrasounds. Rick Santorum’s actually called contraception “harmful to women” and “harmful to society.”

Obama’s campaign conveniently neglects to mention that in the same breath, Santorum mentioned how he voted in favor of birth control numerous times because he believes in it from a “governmental point of view.” We cannot allow these lies to stand because no matter how ridiculous they are eventually those lies will take root with the help of the so-called “mainstream” media.

Obama’s email also said something else that is very dangerous:

Women’s birth control “decisions being made about their care would more likely be left to men: Businesses are 80 percent more likely to be owned by them.”

Notice the attempt to divide American men and women in that statement, which implies that the only way to solve inequality between men and women, real or perceived, is to force private businesses to submit to the federal government’s authority on matters of contraception. Obama’s radical agenda knows no bounds.

We must respond immediately WITH ADS that will put Obama and the Democrats back on the defensive regarding the highly unpopular Obamacare!

That is what they are running away from. Obama knows his healthcare bill has been rejected by the majority of Americans so he is trying to distort conservative opposition to it.

DIVIDE AND CONQUER STRATEGY!!!

There is a slight edit to note: The sentence where Wheeler screams about Susan Fluke had 5 exclamation points on it, but LGF reduces that to 3.

After two matrasses sellers left the show, Rush can now say bye-bye to another advertiser.

And another.

Quicken Loans and Citrix…not exactly bit players here.

This will hopefully leave a mark.

It’s not stopping the advertisers leaving!

Me again, with another advertiser.

carbonite.com

No one with daughters the age of Sandra Fluke, and I have two, could possibly abide the insult and abuse heaped upon this courageous and well-intentioned young lady. Mr. Limbaugh, with his highly personal attacks on Miss Fluke, overstepped any reasonable bounds of decency. Even though Mr. Limbaugh has now issued an apology, we have nonetheless decided to withdraw our advertising from his show. We hope that our action, along with the other advertisers who have already withdrawn their ads, will ultimately contribute to a more civilized public discourse.”

Money talks, bullshit walks!

92 Bubblehead II  Sat, Mar 3, 2012 5:28:55pm

“In this instance, I chose the wrong words in my analogy of the situation. I did not mean a personal attack on Ms. Fluke.”

BULLSHIT!

You called her a slut and a whore and meant every word of it, you worthless piece of shit.

And the businesses that have been buying advertising time on your show know it as well.

Guess what, those who can read the prevailing winds will be leaving you and your show like fleas leave a freshly dead and rapidly cooling body.

93 Mich-again  Sat, Mar 3, 2012 5:32:16pm

Hopefully this is how it ends for Rush Limbaugh.

Or maybe his daughters threatened to not come home for spring break unless he does this, and his wife yelled “Lysistrata Lives!!”, and Mr Friend realized there’s other advertising outlets that won’t bring such tsuris into his home.

Saturday’s “apology” is going to be cover for Monday’s lineup of new advertising sponsors making the show’s debut, just wait. I’m sure there are no shortage of companies that think this is their great opportunity to get in good with Rush. Any publicity is good publicity, right?

I’m sure even if public opinion rightly turns against them too and they have to drop the ads, Rush’s marketing department is still gonna get paid.

97 teresa  Sat, Mar 3, 2012 6:03:10pm

I just love that his advertisers are not returning, I love the carbonite CEO, he really said it all. It is time that this particular brand of vile public discourse should be the subject of public shaming.
For Rush even his extremely half assed “apology” is something he has never had to do in his life on his radio show, altho’ he certainly couldn’t hold a position as a sports dude, (the only job he ever wanted by the way), because his mouth and huge ego always get in his way. He never thought this talk of his could affect his bottom, he really believed he was untouchable. Hah! Finally! His real bottom line is affected, major advertisers fleeing his program. I think we witnessed the ultimate in Karmic retribution. I can’t begin to describe how good this makes me feel.

re: #57 Gus

A Statement from David Friend, CEO of Carbonite:

This is absolutely huge. That is an advertiser that has been with him for a long long time and spends a lot of money advertising on his show

One thing is certain: It is no coincidence that he issued this “apology” the same day Carbonite pulled their advertising
