Breitbart Editor Meredith Dake: A Note on Comments

Stimulating camaraderie
Wingnuts • Views: 28,828

Today, breitbart.com “editor” Meredith Dake has A Note on Comments, and it’s pretty funny.

Over the past month, we’ve monitored how our readers have responded to the new comment format, and how our new comment system has served our site and our vast readership. We’ve also monitored how the hordes of trolls manage the new system, and have been developing new safeguards based on a month of monitoring their behavior.

“New safeguards?” You mean, like reading them? It’s kind of hard to miss the N word, or comments about chimps and gorillas and silverbacks and “nig-nogs” — they sort of jump right out at you.

We appreciate your feedback and your patience in working with a new system over the past month. Hopefully, you will see the improvements that we are already seeing with our changes, and we will continue to monitor your feedback—as well as the IP addresses of trolls that try to flood our system.

The trolls! They’re everywhere! I’m not sure how they can distinguish trolls from their regular commenters, but when you’re making excuses, “troll” is always good.

We very much appreciate those of you who have pointed out comments that are inappropriate and threads that have been ambushed by trolls. Because of the popularity of some of our posts, infusions of offensive comments — mostly from posters using IP anonymizers and other ways to hide their identity — have been making their way onto our site. We want our comment section to be a place of camaraderie and stimulating debate, and we’re continuing to modify our comment settings to ensure that happens.

Camaraderie, stimulating debate, and constant gutter hatred directed at liberals, President Obama, Michelle Obama, and every African American spokesperson they post about. Stimulating! But of course, it’s those “trolls” with their IP anonymizers that are doing it.

Some of those who are desperate for the Breitbart sites to be silenced spend their entire weekends (and weekdays) devoted to the trolls in our comment section. That’s right, not the posts, the comments. Often, within minutes of these shut-ins pointing out inappropriate comments, another round of inspired, anonymous trolls spews their hatred in the same post.

Hey, that’s me she’s calling a “shut-in!” That makes me nostalgic for Andrew Breitbart — it was one of his favorite weird insults. Good to know that Meredith is carrying on the tradition.

But spending an “entire weekend?” Maybe it would take Meredith all weekend to do something like this, but those kinds of posts usually take me about 15-30 minutes at most. Of course, I know how to use some of these new-fangled computer-type tools like macros that switch windows and do the copying and pasting for me, but I wouldn’t expect the mini-Breits to know about those.

And “silencing” them is the last thing I want. It’s great that the right wing exposes themselves the way they do at breitbart.com, and I hope they continue doing it.

While we appreciate the feigned concern of our critics about the atmosphere of our comment sections—bless your hearts, go out and get some sunshine!

Meredith Dake’s concern for me is touching. But really, Meredith — I get plenty of sunshine and fresh air. Knowing how to use these new-fangled computer thingies can actually give you more free time, if you do it right.

But it’s good to know that there won’t be any more racist insanity, or hate speech, or hallucinatory paranoid conspiracy theories in the comments for the race-baiting articles at breitbart.com.

Oh, wait.

Plainly and simply Hussein Obama has violated his oath of office on multiple fronts. It is not just a platitude, it has legal import. Either way this pencil-necked Marxist is going down.

[…]

The ironic thing is that while racialist blacks are obsessing about the white devil and exploiting his “system”, the hispanic and asian demographics will eventually dominate. They are not as easily cowed as whites. What will the New Black Panthers do then, ally with “non-white” hispanics? LOL.

[…]

AmeriKan & British Blacks are 200% more likely to be SCHIZOPHRENIC, than whites. I have to believe that all you Dirtbaggers who are calling for a Race War ala, Chuckles Manson’s HEaLTER SKELTER, are of the same MIND? SICK, RABID DOGS!

[…]

Every black murder of an innocent is now Obama’s Fault..he has opened the flood gates of evil… Democrats did this by enabling and fomenting Black hatreds and their increasing murders of the innocents around them.

[…]

It’s not just guns! It’s total control. That’s why it’s totalitarian. They want control of your guns, your home, the energy you use, your healthcare, your church. These people are tyrants and are not above using violence to gain their ends.

I will tell you the plan for #5..
An Occupier or two, perhaps three have already been picked out in
battleground states..They will be Martyred by the Progressives..
If it does not happen by accident..it will happen..
The Progressives need the OCCUPIERS to attack..
They need an Occupier martyr..Get ready..

[…]

Move 5 is in the street violence, declare martial law and suspend U.S. elections.

[…]

He isn’t just a communist-he is also a Muslim and his goal is to destroy the country he hates.

[…]

Oh no wait. The New York Times referred to Zimmerman as a White Hispanic. So please do not refer to Obama as black. We all know he’s a White Black.

[…]

It’s all about having a vehicle now to start a race war, or try to anyway, if you think for one minute that this is not in the plans you had better get your heads out of the sand.

Certainly, the Kenyan Allende is desperate and will try almost anything. Considering that the usurper has come this far - why stop now?

Call me a Christian nut, an evangelical, whatever you wish but what is occurring started far before the life of one man and it is supported by ne’er do wells, misfits, and succumbers to the evil pitfalls of this worldly life; namely the destruction of civilization via homosexualism, promiscuity, laziness, abortion, the defilement of women, children, and anything else non-Christian.

So called radicals are far more than a local political movement. They are the epitome of their namesake the AntiChrist and whether someone wishes to believe that or not matters not.

[…]

You are the Truth. The Final Prophecies are playing out. The antiChrist has its foot to the metal and ON Freedom’s throat…his political Elites and Unions broke our economy, lost our jobs and shove their tongues down into our childrens’ souls…better rise up…help Walker fight Recall…demand Voter ID…register voters as Republicans…and choose your side wisely.

Beware the Beasts’ Confusions. From over 125,000,000 dead infants torn from Mothers’ Wombs to the deadly Riots in the Street by blind and ignorant slaves of old…the AntiChrist means Business. 4 Supreme Court Justices have the Ginsbergian Disease…they are snakes in your babies’ bed linen.

It is time….we are all George Washington now, so please pray and prepare to battle Evil…it is an eternal fight. Nov6 Valley Forge II…Freedom: Pass it on…

Wow, now there’s some high quality stimulating camaraderie for you!

And now, if you’ll excuse me I’m going for a walk in the lovely sunshine.

I want to be a shut in...but I'm not willing to visit a Breitbart site in order to do so.

Wow, promoting a coup to create a Brutal Right Wing Dictatorship.

And people think I am irrational about being paranoid about how Republicans will act if Obama wins in November.

Just admit that you wrote all those comments while you were shut-in, Charles. I'm sure that if you do, then they'll go easier on you when they offer proof for their accusations.

I mean they do have proof, right? They wouldn't make those kinds of accusations if they didn't have proof, would they? I mean that would be a cowardly and unaccountable thing to do. They aren't cowardly and unaccountable, are they?

Crawfish in a bucket alert:
Paul supporter gets yanked from Mittster event for reading from the Book of Mormon..

A Ron Paul supporter, 28-year-old Bret Hatch, asked Romney whether he agreed with a passage from the Book of Mormon that describes a cursing of people with a "skin of blackness." Romney's staff took away the microphone before the Green Bay man could read the passage.

"I'm sorry, we're just not going to have a discussion about religion in my view, but if you have a question I'll be happy to answer your question," Romney said Monday.

Hatch then asked whether Romney thought it was a sin for interracial couples to have children.

This report by the right-wing "National Association of Scholars" is the likely source for Santorum's lies about the University of California not teaching American History.

Santorum knows his audience, and he knows he doesn't need to tell the truth. So he's just repeating bizarre claims by the fringe groups that he relies on for his world view.

This is a guy who's in the pocket of the Discovery Institute. A deeply stupid man, talking to a deeply stupid audience of reactionaries.

"Most Americans, by the way, are carrying a burden of some kind. We don't see it. We see someone on the street, they smile and say hello, but behind them they're carrying kind of a bag of rocks," Romney said. "I want to help people. I want to lighten that burden."

We'll be monitoring IP addresses however most of the comments are from trolls using IP anonymizers so we really won't know what the feck we're monitoring!

Derp! Sure, they're trolls alright. The same "trolls" that have been dropping their turds of hatred since the creating of Bretibart TV. This has been a well known fact of their readership for many years now.

Don't tell Meredith, but IP addresses are only one piece of data if you're trying to stop trolls, and usually not the most important one.

But the truth is, they're not really that interested in stopping trolls. Inciting racism and hatred is their business model. The only reason she even posted this is because they were embarrassed into it. If I hadn't shined a light on those comments, and the posts hadn't gone viral on Twitter and Facebook, they wouldn't even have blinked at them.

When I think of how the right-wing has gone so far out of their way to discredit this young man and how they've created a profile of him that never existed born upon the need to feed their racist readership... No amount of cleaning up of their comments section as announced by their Stepford-Wingnut will change the true nature of their sites like Breitbart.com. The reason they get these comments is because it is a response one would expect from the explicit race-baiting and dog whistles being blown at Breitbart.com.

You can just feel the fumes of camaraderie billowing up from her comments in that thread.

28 Page 3 in the Binder of Women  Mon, Apr 2, 2012 6:49:42pm
The claims are made in a forthcoming book by reporters Mike Allen and Evan Thomas, according to excerpts provided to the Republican-leaning Daily Caller website. The book is called “Inside the Circus,” and it aims at providing a behind-the-scenes look at the Republican presidential primaries.

The Texas governor’s drug use wasn’t just the cause of a single humorous, highly embarrassing moment, they add. In another instance, a rival campaign’s manager reportedly walked in on Perry while he was urinating… and singing “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad” at the top of his lungs.
I don’t want to denigrate anyone’s struggle with addiction, so I’m not going to touch that particular bit of this story with a ten-foot syringe. But peeing while singing “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad”? That is pure comedy. Also? Very Dubya-esque.

Re-elect him Texas, he was just high!

All told that's 32 dead by the hands of so called "every day" Americans and in a relatively short period of time. There are many more that were shot in cold blood and many more to follow.

Well, I can't speak to Florida's requirements but training is required here. However the training requirement was neutered on order of the NRA. No continuing training is required.

I simply used a copy of my active duty DD-214 from 1985 as my proof of training. I do hope to take some advanced courses down the road and try to get in some range practice weekly.

one was run by a old dude who loved crazy ancient firearms, the store was practically a museum of weird WWII curiosities, and the nerd working the counter was really friendly and happy to chat, the whole place was more "zany Oregon" than anything else, advertised and sponsored contests on irreverent radio shows, etc

the other was a gun-cultist sorta place, full of these aggro mean frowny tough guy types who were giving us the hard sell with the worst cliches like we were buying a car, and the air was thick with showoffy posturing and hostility, and all the stupid NRA bumper stickers you can carry

It's all about war in the end. Power. The reason why most science fiction movies are just war movies in outer space. Why "Star Trek" was originally "Gunsmoke in space." I don't mind these things in moderation but I do believe our fascination with these things are beyond normal.

I wonder if that includes building camaraderie and love around the country. I was at the Emerald City Comicon this past weekend, low and behold a Breitbart Blogging troll and actor Adam Baldwin was there and went after Wil Wheaton for no reason. Well it turns out Baldwin writes for BigFailure. It was really strange for a Comicon event cause we might talk about Federation politics, but not real politics.
I don't know, but I think they are on a tear to stay noticed and they will do anything, create controversy, make asses of themselves, Baldwin tweet endlessly about Trayvon Martin, Obama's Alinsky Strategy, and every other kook story out there, he is truly a Breitbart Morlock. They are trying to stay relevant. It's not working.

I've been to two different gun stores in the portland area, and the tribal difference was amazing

one was run by a old dude who loved crazy ancient firearms, the store was practically a museum of weird WWII curiosities, and the nerd working the counter was really friendly and happy to chat, the whole place was more "zany Oregon" than anything else, advertised and sponsored contests on irreverent radio shows, etc

the other was a gun-cultist sorta place, full of these aggro mean frowny tough guy types who were giving us the hard sell with the worst cliches like we were buying a car, and the air was thick with showoffy posturing and hostility, and all the stupid NRA bumper stickers you can carry

Probably a difference between old school and new school? Back in the day when gun enthusiasts were into it because they loved guns and rifles. The art and craft. The shooting or the hunt. Instead the new school is centered around paranoid delusions of civil strife, self-defense, life and death fantasies. Most of which is negative based. When before it was going to the rifle range it's now become "get your guns before Obama takes you guns and the civil war begins again!!!!!!!!!!!"

I don't consider "Kenyan" to be insulting. His father was a Kenyan. There's nothing insulting (to me) about being from Kenya or having your ancestry be Kenyan.

OK, but it still indicated an area did it not, and people did not move a great deal in those days, so one would still likely be associated with one clan or other would it not?

Perhaps it was simply that only later did people start putting the clan names to the tartans, in a more "official" capacity.

Nope, that wasn't it. It's an interesting history. And another problem with your story is that in the same district, many clans might live, wearing the same tartan.

And most of the old tartan patterns got lost, anyway.

That was in California. Plenty of gun laws to restrict the loon and he still went off the deep end. These sorts of things can't be laid at the feet of the NRA. Usually this sort of nut has been building towards his rampage for a long time, so blame should fall on those who failed to see the signs of a person about to snap.

I'm not laying blame on any single group here. I'm saying that as a society as a whole we're not taking these events seriously enough. All of us. We ALL need to do more to prevent these sorts of things from happening.

re: #146 ProGunLiberal

Clarification for this. Stuff others have pointed out:

Doesn't this instantly disprove Zimmerman's story that he was checking a street sign and Martin attacked him from behind when he was walking back to his car? I mean...

I personally find it difficult to believe considering the entire gated community consists of three streets: Retreat View Circle, Twin Trees, and Long Oak Way.

For Zimmerman to have lived there as long as he did and be so lost in his own neighborhood that he had to climb out of his vehicle to walk up to a street sign in order to be able to read it...come on.

The first part is what Zimmerman's Dad said happened. The next is an evaluation of it:

"He called the non-emergency number first, and they asked him where he was. Because he was at the rear of the townhouses and there was no street sign," Zimmerman said.

Even though a dispatcher told Zimmerman not to follow Martin, his father says he continued walking to locate an address to give to police.

"He lost sight of the individual, he continued to walk down the same sidewalk to the next street so he could get an address for the police. He went to the next street, realized where he was, and was walking to his vehicle," Zimmerman said.

... which still doesn't add up with the map of where Martin was shot, nor does it pass as an explanation for why he was out of the car. What "next street" is Daddy Zimmerman talking about? Did Zimmerman walk perpendicular to Martin's route, over to Retreat View Circle? It looks like Martin would have been walking parallel to Twin Trees and subsequently would have exited onto the southern curve of Twin Trees. This position of the body is crucial because it's nowhere near where the walkway meets any other street.

E: Stole this map from a website that's trying to prove Martin doubled back. I don't think it proves any such thing, but it gives you a good idea of where the key places were. I guess they really are claiming that Zimmerman walked perpendicular to Martin's route.

In summary, I think Zimmerman was exploiting the SYG law to hunt down an African American Teenager, and get away with it.

Interesting contrast between the officers' outfits. The cop with his hand on his head is in uniform blues, notably with both his hands off of his rifle (this isn't badly unsafe, given the assault sling he is using). The other cop looks far more like a soldier than a police officer, with his digital camo and 'boonie' hat (an updated version of those worn in the Vietnam War). That officer also has both hands on his rifle, and his rifle has both a tan handguard and a noticeably longer barrel than that carried by the officer in blue.

The boonies I thought were sharp shooters their afternoon. Might be like SPEC OPS Oakland SWAT or something like that. At first I wasn't sure what he was looking at but then figured out he was probably looking back at the cop with the hands on his head. Or! That he was hiding his face.

Possible, especially with that longer barreled AR-15/M-16. Longer barrels are harder to use at close quarters, but they add muzzle velocity (and with it range and penetrating power) and accuracy (both from flatter trajectories and greater velocity, as well as the additional weight of the barrel helping to reduce recoil).

I'd point out to Linda Harvey that it is possible to regard homosexuality as sinful and yet not abuse homosexuals. But I know that would do no good. She seems one of those kinds of "Christians" who thinks that tormenting gay people is a positive thing if it gets them to repent. Pure control mentality.

Apparently, Arizona's race fail extends past high school:

Arizona Official Considering Banning Ethnic Studies In Universities Too

Two years ago, Arizona outlawed the teaching of some ethnic studies courses in K-12 schools, and now it may expand the prohibition to universities too.

Just weeks after the state passed its infamous immigration law, it also passed a law aimed at scuttling Tucson’s Mexican-American studies program, which critics claimed taught kids to resent white people. The argument, at the time, was that teaching subjects like critical race theory to kids in high school amounted to indoctrination because they were not old enough to question the teaching critically, like university students.

But now, Arizona’s chief education official sees university-level Mexican-American sudies programs as a danger too.

This could be interesting to follow, I hope the farmer has deep pockets.

Legal action taken over alleged GM contamination

A Kojonup farmer has taken legal action against a neighbour after his property was allegedly contaminated by genetically modified canola.

Stephen Marsh's lawyers lodged a writ with the Supreme Court today.

Mr Marsh, a wheat farmer, was unable to sell his crop for a premium after about 70 per cent of his farm was stripped of organic certification in December 2010.

It is alleged Mr Marsh's neighbour, Michael Baxter, was negligent in allowing GM canola to blow onto his farm.

Mr Marsh is seeking damages for loss as well as a permanent injunction against Mr Baxter to protect his farm from future contamination.

Mr Marsh's lawyer Mark Walter believes the matter could go to trial early next year.

Use double quotes around the term(s) to force an exact search. This has always been Google's preferred method because it works the same on searches containing one or more than one term to be exactly matched.

Speaking of Google, this just in.

ACCC wins case over misleading Google links

The Federal Court has ruled Google breached the law by displaying misleading sponsored links at the top of its search results.

Consumers who used Google to search for Honda, Harvey World Travel, Alpha Dog Training and Just 4X4 Magazine were presented with ads that led to rival websites.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) appealed last year after a judge ruled Google's conduct had not been in breach of the Trade Practices Act.

Justice Antony Nicholas found that although a number of the advertisements were misleading or deceptive, Google had not made those representations.

But the full bench of the Federal Court has now overturned that decision, concluding the search engine's conduct did breach the law.

"The enquiry is made of Google and it is Google's response which is misleading," the full court said.

"Although the key words are selected by the advertiser, perhaps with input by Google, what is critical to the process is the triggering of the link by Google using its algorithms."

Church Stages Kidnapping of Youth Group Members

A church pastor in Pennsylvania could face felony charges for staging a fake kidnapping of youth group students in order to teach them about religious persecution.

Teenagers at the Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church in Middletown, Pa., were surprised when they attended a youth group meeting at the church on March 21 and were ambushed by what seemed to be real kidnappers.

Adults, including an off-duty cop, brandished weapons and put bags over the heads of the children, ages 13 through 18, and forced them into a church van. The group was driven to the home of an assistant pastor, who was presented before the group with a seemingly bloodied and bruised face, according to Dauphin County District Attorney Fran Chardo.

Video of the local news station interviewing one of the victims.

"Fake" or not, I think this still legally qualifies as kidnapping, and should be prosecuted as such.

Letter to the Editor: Charged political issue

By Suzanne Vincent, Broken Arrow
Published: 4/3/2012  3:25 AM
Last Modified: 4/3/2012  3:25 AM

As a science professor at Oral Roberts University, I am aware of the controversy about climate change. For more than 25 years, scientists have argued about the greenhouse effect or global warming. [wrong]

The pioneer of comparative physiology, Knut Schmidt-Nielsen of Duke University, who died in 2007, pointed out that at a higher temperature caused by increased carbon dioxide due to burning fossil fuels the atmosphere would hold more water vapor and cause more clouds. This would reflect more solar radiation and reduce temperature. [inaccurate, incomplete, or irrelevant]

Schmidt-Nielsen concluded in the last edition of his animal physiology textbook, “The complexity of these relationships make predictions about the greenhouse effect of increased carbon dioxide highly uncertain.” Schmidt- Nielsen referenced articles published in “Science and Nature” and “The Greenhouse Effect,” “Climate Change” and “Ecosystems” to support his conclusion. [a very long appeal to authority]

Biologists are aware that plants use CO2 with solar energy to make sugar by photosynthesis. Sugar does no good for plants without oxidizing it to make ATP, producing CO2 as a byproduct.

Both animals and plants produce CO2 when they make ATP. Furthermore, air contains only .03 percent CO2; most air is nitrogen and oxygen. [confusing miscellaneous facts without an argument]

Concluding that CO2 is the sole cause [false portrayal of the claim] of climate warming is erroneous, because temperature variations are due to many factors like a decline in recent ice age effects [wrong], sun storms [wrong] and other causes [an indefinite infinite list.] It is a highly charged political issue. [finally, the statement of the assertion] Accepting environmental constraints placed by global [HOTBUTTON] governance could lead to the United States’ loss of sovereignty over its natural resources.

Always, it's the last item. After obfuscating with a running dialogue of miscellaneous, irrelevant facts combined with fallacies, the real story comes out.

This is America.

Support For Japan’s Military Reaches Post-War High

It’s been a tough year for Japan, what with the earthquake and tsunami, North Korean nukes and China’s increasingly aggressive military. But there’s a silver lining for at least one part of Japanese society – the military. A recent opinion poll shows support for Japan’s Self-Defense Forces is at the highest level since the end of World War II.

Those who have a “positive impression” of Japan’s military has climbed to 92 percent, up from 81 percent from the previous poll in 2009. That’s a far cry from the decades that followed the war when the military was widely reviled. Much of the growing support can be traced to the response to last year’s triple disaster. More than 100,000 troops were mobilized to deliver food, shelter, medical care and emergency services throughout the devastated Tohoku region. It was the lone bright spot in the government’s otherwise bungled response.

The military has also benefited from North Korea’s relentless pursuit of nuclear weapons, and with the rapid buildup and growing boldness of China’s military. According to the poll Japanese residents, conducted in late January, those who think Japan’s military capabilities should be increased has jumped to 25 percent, up from 14 percent in 2009.“Today, the (Japanese military) is in a very good position. There is much greater support after Tohoku and there is a greater appreciation for what they can do,” says Masashi Nishihara, president of the Research Institute for Peace and Security, and former head of the National Defense Academy.Although Japan’s Constitution forbids offensive military operations, Japan has quietly built one of the most capable armed forces in the world. It has more than 250,000 men and women in uniform and the annual defense budget of about $56 billion is the among the six largest in the world [...]

I can't go along with that prediction. My guess is that over a 200-year span, the impact of climate change will be regional, primarily, and the impact will be felt disproportionately among those with fewer adaptive resources. Romney's family will not be extinct in 200 years, in my view. In fact, the U.S may be heavily impacted (I think that the time-span may be greater to require that level of impact), but I would guess not at a level that it would cause a very significant drop in population.

You're overlooking the following "known unknowns":

1) Migrating disease vectors (which, thanks to the anti-evolution agenda of the GOP & pharmaceuticals who see no profit in new antibiotics, will be resistant as all-hell)

2) Wars over dwindling resources

3) Genetic engineering fixes that go horribly, horribly, wrong

No - I'm not ignoring them. I'm saying that looking at the estimates of probabilities w/r/t increases in temps per century, 200 years is a fairly short time scale to predict those outcomes on a global scale. It's possible, but my best guess is that there might be devastating impact regionally in some areas, but not likely globally, and not likely in a country with as many resources as the U.S. For example, conflict that might arise from food shortages could significantly impact populations in 3rd world countries - but not in the U.S. with so much and such highly concentrated military power.

I can't tell what time frame references your graphic. Keep in mind, that as some areas become unavailable for agriculture, other areas currently too cold to grow crops will become available. 'That doesn't help if you're in a small country without a varied climate, but on a country as massive at the U.S., that mitigates the rate at which the total amount of farmable land is decreased.

If change happens at a per century rate at the extreme end of the estimated scale, then maybe 200 years would be enough for massive impact on a global level. Extinction? I'd guess not, but massive on a global level. However, the further you get to the extremes of the sensitivity estimates, the less probable they become.

Ecosystem adaptation really depends a lot on the rate of change (not only on the total amount of change in temperature in a given period). The impact of .3 per decade is exponentially worse than .2 per decade in terms of adaptability. "Tipping points" are possibilities, but are contingent on a lot of uncertainties. The unknown, unknowns are certainly out there - and they must be figured into any policy analysis. I think that there are a lot of uncertainties involved in predicting global impact on a 200 year time frame. Predicting regional impact, while extremely difficult at a very specific llevel, is what is most certain. The relationship between regional impact and global is a pretty tough call, IMO.

Migration of animals and plants. At a slower rate of change, migration is to a large extent possible. That isn't to say that migration won't have an impact - it will, but it is possible. At a higher rate of change, migration can't happen, and the result will be extinction. So there's a big difference there on a short-term time frame (on a long time frame there are limits to migration that will result in extinction also). The specific rate of change will significantly impact rates of extinction. And on a 200 year time-scale, the likely impact of short-term natural variability increases greatly, thus introducing a greater "unknown." Again, none of that is reason to not evaluate impact at the extreme end of sensitivity - but it is relevant to the certainty of predictions.

What's a 'region'?

Well, that's a tough question. I don't really have an answer.

By saying that the impact will be greater on a regional scale, I'm saying that the degree of impact will vary across the globe as will the amount of harm caused by the degree of change in various regions.

Not sure if there's another word to use there that would work better, but the issue of regional impact is often discussed w/r/t climate change with essentially that meaning.

re: #336 RogueOne

If Zimmerman walks, it's because of flawed laws (not necessarily SYG). He unnecessarily caused the confrontation which resulted in death. Even if one argues that at the crucial second he was not acting with malice, thinking of it as self-defense, it's still true that he caused the whole situation, to begin with. This should count as manslaughter. I don't know if it can, according to the current laws.

What are you talking about? Just area that the stuff grows/lives shifting around? That really isn't how it works. Entire ecosystems just don't creep around based on temperature. There's a lot more to an ecosystem than just temperature, you know. The changing of the rain patterns, the change to the aquifers, the different soil makeup in the areas they'd 'migrate' to-- you're way, way, way oversimplifying that.

By saying that the impact will be greater on a regional scale, I'm saying that the degree of impact will vary across the globe as will the amount of harm caused by the degree of change in various regions.

The priests are prosecution witnesses in the trial of a longtime supervisor in the Philadelphia archdiocese, Monsignor William Lynn. The former secretary for clergy is charged with endangering children by allegedly helping the church cover up abuse complaints.

The Rev. Joseph Okonski told jurors Wednesday that he found a box of pornographic magazines and videos in another priest's bedroom in 1995.

Okonski said he informed his pastor, who did nothing. But he soon called an archdiocesan official after finding the sexually explicit letter to a seventh-grade boy, which purported to be from a classmate and asked if the boy wanted oral sex.

"You are soooo cute. I have been thinking about you for a long time. ... You're the cutest in our grade," the typed letter said.

The author said he fantasized about seeing the boy getting spanked by his father. The boy was told to write "Yes" on a bulletin board at the parish school if he wanted to engage in sex acts with his "secret lover."

The priest admitted writing the letter and soon left the parish, but the next witness said he landed at his rectory, where he worked with altar boys and heard confession.

My property value went way down a few months ago. The county supervisors have rejected the assessment...

The Nelson County Board of Supervisors decided to reject the 2012 reassessment at its meeting Thursday.

This means the county will use 2008 reassessment. Under that assessment, the value of a penny is $267,646. Under the 2012 assessment, a penny would have valued at $199,539.

“I feel strongly that it was done incorrectly,” said Larry Saunders, the South District representative. “There were so many things that were just not done correctly.”

Supervisors rejected the reassessment conducted by Blue Ridge Mass Appraisal, a Staunton-based company, for reasons brought to the board’s attention over the past few months. The decision was announced at a budget workshop meeting after a closed session March 20.

The resolution adopted by the board cites the reasons as:

• Unreasonably wide differences between sale prices and assessed values;

• “Irrationally low values for certain valuable commercial properties;”

• Inconsistent classifications of dwellings within the county, with most classified higher than in past assessments without support;

• Great differences in values between similar properties in the same neighborhoods;

Certain properties and improvements were assigned a value of zero;

• A large number of landowners did not receive notices of the reassessment values and notices of the appraiser’s recalculated values were sent too late for the landowner to appeals;

• A lack of coordination between the company and the county on the county’s software, contributing to the missing and late notices;

• Some landowners received “dramatically revised” assessment notices without appropriate explanation;

• Some of the errors will take a long time to come to the commissioner of revenue’s attention and some may not be fixable;

Fortunately my property wasn't assessed at zero.

I got the graphic from the dKos piece I linked to my #288. The author in turn got it from this paper:

The main results of this paper are in agreement with those of Clark et al. [2006], indicating that the patterns of modeled changes of extreme temperatures are not an artifact of the particular model used here. Even if corrected for the bias in today’s climate, the projected T100 values point to the importance of dangerously high future temperatures in densely populated areas. For example, projected T100 values far exceed 40C in Southern Europe and the US Midwest by 2090–2100 and even reach 50C in north-eastern India and most of Australia. Such levels receive much too little attention in the current climate change discussion, given the potentially large implications.

My point is that predictions about the level of impact by a certain end point are highly contingent upon the rates of change, and that there is fairly wide CI w/r/t sensitivity over a 200-year time span. If you're going to make a prediction about level of global temperature change, you have to associate it with a specific rate of change and discuss where that rate is in the range of probabilities, and even there when you're talking about the relationship between temperatures and impact there is a great deal of uncertainty. Yes, for sure, the questions you raise are among those uncertainties.

No, it isn't, because you'd have to be able to predict the actual global effects, too. And that depends on the interaction of different systems.

When you say:

Predicting regional impact, while extremely difficult at a very specific llevel, is what is most certain.

You are wrong. Predicting regional impact is no more certain than predicting global impact.

I got the graphic from the dKos piece I linked to my #288. The author in turn got it from this paper:

Thanks for the link. It's an interesting post/article: From the post:

It might be easy to dismiss these as "merely extreme" examples on top of a general expectation that average global temperatures will increase by about 3 degrees over the next century. 3 degrees doesn't sound like a lot until you start looking at models for the extreme data. That's where things get ugly.

So as I understand it, they're projecting extreme events (not average temps) at a relatively mid-range 3 degrees per century sensitivity. So then it seems to me that w/r/t the discussion we were having, you have to evaluate the direct connection between the occurrences of extreme events and impact on agriculture. There's an impact, for sure, but there isn't just a straight line you can draw to measure the impact on agricultural production and as a consequence, population. Again, not to diminish the reality that there would be significant impact, but just because such extreme events will occur, it doesn't mean that agricultural production will cease in those regions.

During her much-buzzed about appearance on the Today Show, Sarah Palin was asked by NBC's Matt Lauer if she was "happy" with Romney.

Palin grimaced, and replied, "Anything is still possible, there can still be a bit of a shakeup, but the numbers are what the numbers are and yeah, he does seem to be, yeah he does appear to be the frontrunner, I've been of the mindset, you know, anybody but Obama will be so much better for our country."

When you say:

I was speaking to a range of regional impact across various regions. Predicting a specific impact in any one region isn't necessarily more certain (it might be in some areas, like the arctic, and I would imagine it would be less certain in other areas). But I meant that it is easier to predict a range of regional impact particularly on a relatively short-term time reference (drought in some areas, increased rain in others) than to predict global impact (X degree of temperature change globally, Y reduction in agricultural production, globally). I could certainly have written it more clearly.

Israel's U.S. envoy: Award to Helen Thomas shows Palestinians aren't ready for peace

Long-time reporter, criticized for her 2010 anti-Israel comments, honored by the PLO's U.S. mission for her defense of the 'Palestinian position every step of the way.'

A decision by the Palestinian mission to the United States to honor journalist Helen Thomas proves the Palestinians inability to meet the "basic requisites of peace," Israel's ambassador to the U.S. Michael Oren said on Tuesday.

Oren, responding to a Sunday ceremony in which Thomas was marked for her support of the "Palestinian position, said he "was appalled by the award ceremony given by the PLO delegation in Washington to Helen Thomas, who has been completely shunned by all decent Americans after making anti-Semitic remarks, along with teaching Palestinian children to hate the Jewish State and to glorify suicide bombers."

"This atrocious act is an indication of the Palestinian Authority’s failure to meet the basic requisites of peace," he added.

She must be so excited.

However the factor that I rarely see addressed in such discussions that is the greatest point of environmental concern of which I am aware is air quality. Crop growing, animal/insect/bird migration, etc. isn't really an issue if the methane release that is going on even now poisons the atmosphere to prevent existing biological forms to survive. With the thawing of permafrost these "earth farts" are deadly with extinction level effects.

The potential tipping point of methane release is certainly huge w/r/t the greenhouse effect. It's interesting, though, that I haven't read anything about the impact of permafrost release of methane as a pollutant (well, the GHG effect is also as a pollutant, but I think you get what I mean). Part of that may be because the permafrost release might be more localize to lightly populated areas, and may not "globalize?' If you have a link, I'd love to read it.

Mass Extinction Caused by Deadly 'Earth Burp'

Micha Ruhl and researchers from the Nordic Center for Earth Evolution at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark have found that the mass extinction of half of Earth's marine life over 200 million years ago was likely the result of a giant release of methane into the atmosphere.

This massive methane "burp" led to an increase in atmospheric temperature around the globe -- and organisms and ecosystems were simply unable adapt to their hotter environment.

And now, we're reproducing those conditions. Yay.

Former VP Cheney released after heart transplant

WASHINGTON — Former US vice president Dick Cheney was released Tuesday from a Virginia hospital 10 days after heart transplant surgery, his spokeswoman said.

The heart transplant March 25 at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Virginia, was the latest in a series of operations and interventions for Cheney, who has had a long history of heart troubles and who remains a prominent political figure.

Cheney "would like to thank the physicians at Inova Fairfax and George Washington University Hospitals for the outstanding care they have provided," his spokeswoman Kara Ahern said in a statement.

"As he leaves the hospital, the former vice president and his family want to again express their deep gratitude to the donor and the donor's family for this remarkable gift."

At the time of the procedure, Cheney's spokeswoman said he was unaware of who the donor was but that he and his family would "be forever grateful."

Amazing how today you can get a new heart and be out of the hospital in a 9 days.

Police on Monday evicted and arrested nearly 80 Occupy activists who had taken over an empty San Francisco building the night before and had stockpiled bricks and supplies with the apparent intention of staying long-term.

Officers in riot gear stormed the two-story building at 888 Turk St. at about 1:15 p.m. after tearing down a barricade protesters built to block the main entrance, said police spokesman Sgt. Michael Andraychak.

The building, which is owned by the Catholic Archdiocese of San Francisco, has been used as a music education facility by the archdiocese-associated nearby Sacred Heart Cathedral High School.

I caught the MSNBC interview. She did not really say anything stupid, but for that she did not say anything of substance.

From what I've seen she also seems to have developed a sense of humor about herself. That had to take a lot of coaching.

College Gunman Reportedly Lined Up Victims

OAKLAND, Calif. — The former nursing student who the authorities say fatally shot seven people and wounded three others at a religious college had lined his victims up before shooting them, Oakland’s police chief said Tuesday.

If even one of them had been armed? Only one dead then. Or if they had all rushed him rather than "going along" with his demands? It's like those armed robberies where they herd the workers and customers in back to kill the witnesses.

It's a horrible cliche but this really is a case of the cops being only minutes away when seconds count.

I've had the fun task of telling foreign students that they aren't cutting it, and will be asked to leave unless they're magically able to learn to speak English in the next two weeks.

Fortunately that was in places with strict gun controls.

But allowing people to bring guns onto campus is a real smart idea and one with no downside.

They need a school marshal program. I would use student volunteers--except that you couldn't volunteer. You'd have to be asked based on the fact that you've shown stability, responsibility, and ability.

Also, the best candidates would be students who would be praying that they'd never, ever have to use the gun they were allowed to bring.

Well, it's easy to say that in retrospect. Most often you're better off just going along with the nut with the gun/explosive/whatever. Just that sometimes you're not and in hindsight you can say it would have been best to fight back. It's just that if you tried to apply that in all cases, you'd probably cause an even greater number of deaths in the long term from escalating things into physical violence.

80-year-old woman lands plane after pilot passes out in midair: report

An 80-year-old Wisconsin woman took control of a small airplane and managed to make a miraculous landing after her pilot husband passed out in midflight — and later died, local authorities said.

Door County police told local station WLUK that the unidentified couple was soaring in a twin-engine Cessna above Sturgeon Bay, some 50 miles north of Green Bay, at around 5 p.m. Monday when the pilot lost consciousness.

"[His wife] took over the aircraft," Door County Sheriff Terry Vogel told the station. "She's not a licensed pilot and has very little [experience] flying an aircraft."

The woman radioed for help, and a short time later, she was forced to make an emergency landing because the plane ran out of fuel and one of the engines failed.

Police scrambled to get a local pilot in the air and in radio contact with the inexperienced flyer, Vogel said.

"We got him up into an aircraft and he felt it was easier for him to give her instructions, for him to determine for instance, her speed in the air and to instruct how to successfully land that aircraft," Vogel told WLUK.

Eventually, the pilot was able to coach the woman into landing the plane — though witnesses said it was touch-and-go on the way down.

I know lots of Scottish-Americans and Swedish-Americans and Czech-Americans who are proud of their heritage. (Especially the Scots. They are insane.) Why shouldn't having Kenyan heritage be something to be proud of?

It is...my friend's niece, who is with the Peace Corps in Mali, is Kenyan on her mom's side, and damn proud of it.

But when it's applied to Obama by these charmers, it's decidedly meant as a suggestion that he's not a real American because his father was African.

Also, as you say, "Allende" is clearly meant to be threatening.

It is sad that he can't be as proud of his heritage as the Scots who can explain their exact tartan, and play the bagpipes, and go and toss cabers.

I find that very sad.

Or that he can't celebrate it as openly as he does his Irish roots.

Zimmerman defender rants about ‘young black males’

...

“Neighbor-hood, that’s a great word,” Taaffe said, chuckling. “We had eight burglaries in our neighborhood, all perpetrated by young black males in the 15 months prior to Trayvon being shot.”

“How many of those cases did they arrest people?” O’Brien wondered. “How many of those cases were people actually convicted.”

“One that I know of where the perpetrator was apprehended,” Taaffe admitted. “The young black male went in during the daytime just two houses down from where my my place was.”

“It sounds like you are saying that it made sense to you that George Zimmerman would be fearful of young black men,” O’Brien observed.

“No, it would be consistent that the perpetrators were all of the young black male ID,” Taaffe explained. “All of the perpetrators of the prior burglaries were young black males. … You know, there’s an old saying that if you plant corn, you get corn.”

Well considering I feel California should be required, by the US Constitution, to be a "shall issue" state, I'd consider it a good thing for the poor and the minority to have the same ability to defend themselves and their families as the rich and famous do.

There was one time a mass killing at a church was prevented by someone who was carrying. But this person was a trained security guard, not some random cowboy.

The church became very subdued in its praise of this heroine once they found out she was gay.

Assume, for now, that I could prove to you that restricting gun sales would reduce your odds of being killed by a gun by 50% over the course of your lifetime.

Would that be a good reason to curtail the sale of guns, or would you prefer to double your risk of death so that you can be holding a gun "just in case"?

I don't see why that's an unfair question - it seems pretty straightforward that if curtailing gun sales reduces your chance of dying via gunfire, you would want to curtail gun sales, all else being equal.

478 wrenchwench  Tue, Apr 3, 2012 10:17:30am

The shooting disaster in which Gabrielle Giffords was wounded was almost made worse by an armed bystander. Someone had picked up Jared Loughner's gun and was waving it around, and a man who just came out of the Safeway almost shot him, thinking he had been the shooter. Instead, other guys tackled the gun waver and took it away from him.

re: #430 Mostly sane, most of the time.

If you looked at most of the permissions on phone apps, you'd wonder why any of the them need to know any/all of the information they're requesting.

It's one thing for a map app to want to know your location and read/write to your SD card. It's another for a game to know your location and access your address book.

But data mining is how everyone makes (or hopes to make) money. Only way around it is not to get the apps or to police your data tightly.
