Romney Lies: “I Did Not Speak About the Palestinian Culture”

The art of the Big Lie
Politics • Views: 20,270

Mitt Romney has learned the lesson of the Big Lie — how to simply state things that are not true, with authority: Romney: I ‘Did Not Speak About’ Palestinian Culture.

CBS News) Under fire from Palestinian leaders for recent comments suggesting that Israel’s economic success is borne out of its “culture,” Mitt Romney on Tuesday attempted to clarify his remarks, telling Fox News in an interview that he had not talked about “the Palestinian culture or the decisions made in their economy.”

“I’m not speaking about it, did not speak about the Palestinian culture,” Romney told Fox’s Carl Cameron, taped before the candidate’s departure from Poland. “That’s an interesting topic that perhaps could deserve scholarly analysis but I actually didn’t address that. I certainly don’t intend to address that during my campaign. Instead I will point out that the choices a society makes have a profound impact on the economy and the vitality of that society.”

Yes, he absolutely did speak about Palestinian culture; this is an outright lie. Here are the exact quotes again:

“As you come here and you see the GDP per capita, for instance, in Israel which is about $21,000 dollars, and compare that with the GDP per capita just across the areas managed by the Palestinian authority, which is more like $10,000 per capita, you notice such a dramatically stark difference in economic vitality,” he said. …

“Culture makes all the difference,” Romney told Israeli donors on Monday. “And as I come here and I look out over this city and consider the accomplishments of the people of this nation, I recognize the power of at least culture and a few other things.”

Has there ever been a politician who lies as fluently and with as little self-consciousness as Mitt Romney?

"Other than those time when I explicitly mentioned it, I never mentioned it."

Watch the hair-splitting... "I did not say PALESTINIAN CULTURE".

Anyone up for a good laugh?

In a monochromatic sense, and comparing the options, I deeply love the color white. BUT I SAID NOTHING ABOUT THE COLOR BLACK.

Apparently Mitt has all the tools necessary to be a modern day Republican. He can kiss my ass.

I don't even get the point of this lie. It's obvious that he said it, some people even like him saying it, and thought it's a very undiplomatic thing to say it is in some ways defensible. With enough spinning you could say that it was similar to what Obama said: that until Palestinians focus on making peace and living together with Israel, rather than denying their right to exist, the Palestinians will remain stuck as constant belligerents.

There. I just gave it better spin than Romney was capable of.

Are the GOP playing to lose?

Romney doesn't particularly need a reason to lie. It's just what he does. I've seen that sort of behavior before, but usually only in preschoolers.

I'm also a little curious about his backpedalling here. My assumption is that Romney's visits are all about U.S. domestic consumption. Wants to get on the front page of major newspapers. Check. Gets points with country's American population. Maybe he's thinking of Middle Eastern immigrant vote in Michigan?

Each of the following is bad enough: Romney's ability to lie, and the Fox News propaganda network.

Unfortunately, in combination, the two may prove to be very powerful. Romney will say whatever his well-paid pollsters tell him voters want to hear. Then, Fox News will amplify that 24 / 7. And always, the process will be fine-tuned by well-paid, professional pollsters, and other political professionals.

I honestly don't know either. I actually thought he said what he said on purpose to shore up the 'we hate a-rabs" Republican base. So I am stumped by the back peddle here.

Nathan Thurm, tobacco industry attorney.
Muhammad Saeed al-Sahhaf, Iraqi Minister of Information.

And now, Mitt Romney, Republican candidate for President.

The tradition continues.

Once again, Mitt utilizes his well-worn reset button ... and simply rewrites his personal history.

When spin-doctoring and damage control are daily requirements when you're on the campaign trail -- demonstrating a lack of preparation and self-discipline, this doesn't speak well for your ability to serve as Commander in Chief.

Come on. Mitt is nowhere NEAR as good as Baghdad Bob.

Is that how you see the region? Black and white? No one can say anything good about Israel without it being insulting to Palestinians?

Does anyone NOT think that you can praise the Israeli culture and not be comparing it to the Palestinians?

He did compare the GDP per capita. But he could have done the same thing with Jordan or Syria.

Syria GDP - per capita (PPP): $5,100 (2011 est.)
Jordan GDP - per capita (PPP): $5,900 (2011 est.)

Same story.

Does anyone here really think that the Palestinian GDP figures suffer because of Israel?

Anti semitism, dictatorships, institutionalized misogyny are all bad for the economy.

Does anyone want to debate that?

Seriously, why isn't the complaint here about Romney's inability to articulate the problems with Islamic culture or is that too obvious? Or should we blame everyone except Muslims for their situation?
