Still nothing on CNN’s webpage….

My first thought is the same one I had after Oklahoma City. “Local boys.”

Looks like blood in the photo. Someone got hit.

Bad news.

Who the hell bombs a marathon? My initial thought was that it was a mentally unstable disgruntled runner.

Holy shit!

Damnit.

That’s where crowds are, unfortunately, especially at the finish line. Lots of media as well.

That was my first conclusion, a large gathering people concentrated in one specific spot.

Sad to say, but it’s what the military folks refer to as a “target rich environment”.

17 BongCrodny  Mon, Apr 15, 2013 12:14:23pm

Assuming it is some form of terror attack, it might not be the Boston Marathon they’re attacking; it’s “Patriot’s Day” in Massachusetts and that could be a reason unto itself.

re: #19 Lidane

Pure speculation on my part, from the photos it looks like maybe a bomb in a backpack or something. Most security procedures for something like the Boston Marathon would involve removing trash cans, etc., somewhere where a bomb could be concealed.

I’d like to think that, but if you’re crazy or pissed off enough to set off multiple bombs in a crowded place, you’re probably not going to need much motivation to begin with.

Other groups, such as right-wing? They don’t strike me as the type for press releases.

Agreed.

Speculating about who did this and why right now is pointless. The fact is, whoever did it wanted maximum impact and casualties. They deliberately chose a high profile event and area. They wanted to get noticed and they wanted to hurt as many innocent people as they could. The rest is details for now.

The CBS affiliate here in boston has video of the explosion at the finish line taken from a grandstand camera. Looks like this may have been the one that occurred at or inside 671 Boylston. Now the same affiliate is saying “not inside the building” but from packages/bags left outside 671. This is right across the street from the Boston Public Library and the grandstands that face the finish line.

* Pretty much anything else.

Let’s leave it at that until real, concrete information comes in.

I completely agree.

But from whom? If it was Islamists, yeah, they’ll be a press release PDQ. And not just one - everyone will wanna get in on that action.

Other groups, such as right-wing? They don’t strike me as the type for press releases.

I really hope this wasn’t one of my demented co-religionists who thinks that blowing up innocent people is some fashion of sacred duty.

Patriot day & Happy Tax Day? This is homegrown far right terrorism ala OKC. It’s a damn good thing those freaks can’t buy large quantities of ammonium nitrate fertilizer anymore.

It’s what passes for news here in the US because the 24/7 news cycle demands they keep the story fresh in order to secure ratings. So they keep slinging shit against the wall in the hopes that something turns out to be true so they can claim it as an “exclusive.”

126 erik_t  Mon, Apr 15, 2013 12:53:48pm

re: #115 Lidane

Same here. Speculation is entirely pointless right now, since it just happened.

I’m waiting until we get some solid reports from the police and fire chiefs and city officials before I even try to guess what the hell just happened or why.

Well, we can reasonably look at where and when the bombs went off, how big they were, what that implies as to end goals… you know, rational discourse.

I THINK IT WAS THE RADICAL ISLAMISTS, NO YOU’RE WRONG, I THINK IT WAS A SOVEREIGN CITIZEN NUTTER… thanks, I can probably find that shit in the Youtube comments.

What annoys me most about this practice is that then conspiracy theorists come along and latch on to the early incorrect reports, saying, “But they came out right after the event so they must be Moar Twoo (tm) than the reports that were doctored and spun to fit the official party line later.” The constant hunger for information NOW is feeding the frenzy of stupid.

Lots of smoke, not seeing much in the way of nearby broken glass. That tree and its branches don’t even budge and the ornate street lamps remain intact. Indicative of a low brissance explosive like AMFO, possibly even a black powder equivalent deflagration, not constrained well. Fucking horrible to be standing near but that looks like it could’ve been a lot nastier.

I think it’s just standard operating procedure. If they didn’t deploy precautions and something happened anyway, they’d get all kinds of grief for not taking things seriously. Better to deploy whatever counter-measures you have and end up NOT using them than the alternative.

My niece is an ER physician in Boston. I just talked to her husband. They were at the scene watching the finish with their 3 year old daughter. They were about a block from the larger explosion. They are not hurt but my niece was very busy assisting and had just left for the hospital with one of the emergency vehicles. Her husband stayed behind to manage their daughter and get her and himself out of there. He was trying to keep her eyes covered. He is Israeli by birth. He has seen this before. He couldn’t say much except that there were two explosions and many, many casualties, primarily from flying glass but some much more serious.

California man blows himself up after refusing medical help

A Costa Mesa, California neighborhood had to be evacuated Sunday night after a resident allegedly killed himself with a homemade bomb.

KTLA-TV reported on Monday that authorities found the unidentified man laying on his front lawn earlier in the evening, but refused medical attention and went back inside his home.

“Neighbors were trying to convince him to go to the hospital,” one resident, Laurie Raphoon, told KNBC-TV. “An hour or two later we heard an explosion.”

Times like this when I feel completely powerless I understand why people pray.

It’s more a way to calm oneself, a version of meditation. If done properly can be quite healthy for the one that prays. Others, the ones that are prayed for, I’m not so sure. Well, knowing that one cares enough to pray for you can’t be a hurtful thing.

One of them gets up early every morning. She trains hard. She spends day after day putting herself through pain, wondering if it’s worth it. But she does it, because life is about setting goals, even if they’re not reasonable or meaningful to others.

The other person also may get up early. He also may work very hard. But what he works very hard at is finding a way to kill her. To kill others like her. He is dedicated, too. Bombs like this are not easy to make, or to deploy. He does it because of hatred in his heart or insanity in his brain or religious fervor or delight in pain, for any number of wild evil reasons.

The one explosion they showed seemed to be nearer to the storefront than to the race course area (street). So, the bombers weren’t terribly specific about wanting to injure the runners. There seemed to be tables and outdoor seating in the area. I don’t know if that was for the race or because there was a restaurant in the area.

I speculated that this means there was no suicide bomber?

Were these devices on timers?

If remote detonated devices does that mean we used some sort of anti-remote device that shuts down cell phone signals? (remote bombs are usually detonated by radio frequency or cell phones).

Or it could mean the bomber could only set off 2 devices before panic or injury set in.

All speculation at this point.

Or the bomber failed to wire bomb correctly to cell phone (most likely since cell phones can still be used)?

Yes, possible. NY Post says suspect in custody. But I don’t trust NY Post and CBS news is not stating this.

Some humans really suck. I’ll never in a million years be be able to understand the desire to maim & kill innocent people.

The trick is to convince yourself that they’re not innocent. Dehumanization of enemies (real or imagined) has always been the first goal of every kind of propaganda.

I’m not going off the NYP. Just the cops telling folks in the area not to use their cellphones in the area puts the idea that there’s some sort of jammer that prevented the other bombs from detonating in doubt.

One was set off by a demolition units (was that one of the above or number five)?
Something at the JFK library may be related?

If it’s a “Christian” or white person, then the bombing was the fault of a mental disorder. If it’s a muslim or brown person, then they are terrorists.

353 danarchy  Mon, Apr 15, 2013 1:59:00pm

no other devices have been found. They are treating any packages that were dropped on the route as suspicious and clearing each,

I don’t know which is more disgusting, the NYP reporting unsourced rumors that might very well lead to violence against Muslims…or Bryan Fucking Fischer positively giddy over the rumors.

I mention it time and again. Our problems in the Islamic world are from our allies Pakistan and Saudi Arabia and the blowback from the USSR era Afghanistan war. But I won’t go there right now.

Sandyhook was a flase flag operation to these types so if it is “home grown” terror it will be the same old bubble mentality.
