Obama Makes Statement on Boston Bombings:

(CNN)- President Barack Obama said he ordered the “full resources” of the federal government to respond to the Boston bombings on Monday, and that he also called for increased security around the United States as necessary.

“We still do not know who did this or why,” he said from the Brady Press Briefing Room, cautioning people against jumping to conclusions. “But make no mistake, we will get to the bottom of this, and we will find out who did this, we’ll find out why they did this.”

Any individuals or groups responsible for the “senseless” bombing, he added, will “feel the full weight of justice.”

“The American people will say a prayer for Boston tonight,” he said.

LA times picks up the Suadi angle
1 person questioned in Boston Marathon explosions

A federal law enforcement officials said authorities were questioning a Saudi national who was taken to a Boston hospital with injuries. The person was not identified as a suspect.

The official also said authorities are also “desperately seeking” a Penske rental truck seen leaving the race site. They further believe the explosive devices were small bombs placed in small receptacles and that at least one was detonated in a nearby trash can.

The reaction from authorities and the Presidential address makes me think this might not be the actions of some lone nut or domestic zealot.

26 Lidane  Mon, Apr 15, 2013 3:24:58pm

Patton Oswalt fucking nails it:

Boston. Fucking horrible.

I remember, when 9/11 went down, my reaction was, “Well, I’ve had it with humanity.”

But I was wrong. I don’t know what’s going to be revealed to be behind all of this mayhem. One human insect or a poisonous mass of broken sociopaths.

But here’s what I DO know. If it’s one person or a HUNDRED people, that number is not even a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a percent of the population on this planet. You watch the videos of the carnage and there are people running TOWARDS the destruction to help out. (Thanks FAKE Gallery founder and owner Paul Kozlowski for pointing this out to me). This is a giant planet and we’re lucky to live on it but there are prices and penalties incurred for the daily miracle of existence. One of them is, every once in awhile, the wiring of a tiny sliver of the species gets snarled and they’re pointed towards darkness.

But the vast majority stands against that darkness and, like white blood cells attacking a virus, they dilute and weaken and eventually wash away the evil doers and, more importantly, the damage they wreak. This is beyond religion or creed or nation. We would not be here if humanity were inherently evil. We’d have eaten ourselves alive long ago.

So when you spot violence, or bigotry, or intolerance or fear or just garden-variety misogyny, hatred or ignorance, just look it in the eye and think, “The good outnumber you, and we always will.”

Jordan Muslim extremist ‘happy’ over Boston bombing

The head of an extremist Jordanian Muslim Salafi group says he’s “happy to see the horror in America” after the explosions in Boston.

“American blood isn’t more precious than Muslim blood,” said Mohammad al-Chalabi, who was convicted in an al-Qaida-linked plot to attack U.S. and other Western diplomatic missions in Jordan in 2003.

“Let the Americans feel the pain we endured by their armies occupying Iraq and Afghanistan and killing our people there,” he said early Tuesday.

A Mideast counterterrorism official based in Jordan said the blasts “carry the hallmark of an organized terrorist group, like al-Qaida.” He did not give actual evidence.

A Jordanian official said security was beefed up around the U.S. Embassy in Amman.

Wow, you really do believe that some unnamed “counterterrorism expert” in Jordan and a crazy anti-American jihadist are somehow tangible evidence of international terrorism?

This is exactly what you’d expect from both domestic and international terrorism, and the raised security at embassies and nuke plants is not a sign either way.

It’s standard to beef up security generally until the threat is understood specifically.

Some extremist jackoff celebrating in Jordan is no indicator of who might be responsible.

At this point, every category of violent nutjob is suspected. Tax day and the presence of the Sandy Hook families would certainly suggest domestic fanatics. It is also possible that the pitiful remnants of Al Qaeda managed to scrape up the wherewithal to pull this off. It could be some loony affiliation that has not yet appeared on our radar screen. Strengthening overseas security just seems prudent. There is no reason to interpret it as an indicator of definite knowledge.

The Universal Muslim Association of America put out a statement clearly in anticipation that evidence would lead to some sort of radical Muslim group or that people would automatically jump to that conclusion: “UMAA sends its thoughts and prayers to the victims and families of the explosions, and hopes for a speedy investigation into the cause of the tragedy,” the group said. “UMAA strongly condemns any act of terrorism. I doubt it too. Timing of the bombs was off… First explosion was the big one, secondary was smaller. The Jihadists aren’t smart, but they usually don’t mess this kind of thing up.

I have to admit, my first thought was not a Muslim terrorist. One of the biggest reasons was because Muslim terrorists tend to use live sacrificial people in their acts. From almost the beginning they were reporting remote devices and suspicious bags.
Does not mean I think for sure it was not Muslim Terrorists just that the M.O. was a little different.

I’m confident it will turn out to be domestic far right terrorists that will be called “false flag” or “lunatics” by the Fox & the rest of the right wing media machine. He, or more likely a small number of they, will turn out to be sovereign citizen types with a side order of the Turner Diaries. No high explosives (TNT) at all. Black powder is the most likely, though ammonium nitrate with fuel oil ala OKC isn’t impossible. But given the video, I’d put money on black powder in two layers of pipe - pvc or cast iron pipe - with the ball bearings lining in between the two pipes.

I saw the explosion videos and thought “domestic” also, because the bombs were too small. Foreign entities would usually want a bigger bang for their buck, no pun intended - they aim for bigger explosions/more death in return for the cost of paying for operatives in the country. I was thinking backpack/trash can bombers, which could mean anybody: suddenly religious college kids, lefty loons, righty loons, who knows.

I wondered about racial motivation too. The top finishers of marathons are usually non-white… Attacking brown people on “Patriot’s Day” on April 15th? Hmm.

I don’t know who committed this horror, so I’m not going to speculate. If the perpetrators were foreign or domestic, Muslims or non-Muslims, left wingers or right wingers, that 8-year old child and another person will still be just as dead, and the injured will still be injured. It’s beyond fucked up on more levels than I can count.

Living in an open society like ours we’re especially vulnerable to these kinds of attacks, so I’m not sure what we can do about it. Maybe dial back some of the hate speech, be it religious, political, racial or whatever. Also, we can try to be better ourselves—each and every one of us in whatever small ways in our daily lives—with a conscious effort towards making the world a little bit better, kinder. Giving up more freedoms than we already have (since 9/11) is not an option as far as I’m concerned.

I guess that’s pretty much all I have to say about it for now.

I’m really starting to get a bad, bad Timothy McVeigh-style vibe off of this event.

Also, to attest to the severity of this attack, ten of the injured people from the bombings have required amputation of one or more limbs. A total of seventeen are currently in critical condition.

re: #106 #CPAC: I Have A Short Mingle Stick.THANKS OBAMA.

My reason for suspecting a domestic person or group is target selection. I’m reasonable certain that the reason the Twin Towers, The Pentagon and the White House were chosen was because of their international reputation. It would send a message to the whole world.

And as I found out later bin Laden hoped it would provoke the U.S. to invading a country in the Muslim world. Preferably Afghanistan where the U.S. would get its prick in the meat grinder like the Soviets, and radicalize large sections of the Muslim world. But Iraq suited him just as well.

The Boston Marathon doesn’t, so far as I know, have the same international cachet as the 9/11 targets. This event’s message is directed at America and America alone.

If the bomber turns out to be one of their fellow-travelers, or just someone on the extreme right in general, they’re going to be even more despicable with their frantic denials and screaming “coverup!”

It must be said, CNN mounted the same headline, minus the ‘crazy’. That’s not to say mounting such a headline is wise, of course, I’m just saying who’s doing it.

I understand the feeling, but there will be no laughing in South Austin. People got blown to pieces, today.

All of the injuries I have seen were from blast/overpressure. No nails, or nuts and bolts. Best guess? Dynamite and cell phone cores with a simple capacitor-actuated detonator. Kid stuff (unfortunately) in this internet world, if you can get the materials.

From CNN’s live blog:

[Update, 7:57 p.m. ET] Doctors are “pulling ball bearings out of people in the emergency room,” a terrorism expert briefed on the investigation told CNN’s Deborah Feyerick.

Premature, I think, to report that. With all of the people fleeing the area, a lot of backpacks were left behind. I would presume that anything that alerted a nitrate dog would be destroyed by a controlled detonation rather than being opened. I would. And there are a lot of substances that can alert a nitrate dog. Like a deck of paper playing cards:

I dumped a guy who posted a cartoon accusing Obama of knowingly aiding the Muslim Brotherhood and Al Queda. I wrote a response that included the f-bomb, and he got mad at me because his kids might have seen it.

I get that cursing in front of kids is unacceptable. Know what else is unacceptable: ACCUSING THE PRESIDENT OF WORKING WITH AL QUEDA. This jackass was utterly fine with his children seeing him make treasonous comments about the President.

I kept him around long enough to see what kind of meltdown he’d have over Obama getting re-elected. I then dropped him. Good timing as well, as Benghazi happened a few weeks later. That would have been really unpleasant.

Yeah, I don’t mind having right-wingers in my facebook feed (I’m very close friends with a right-libertarian who dislikes Obama quite a bit) but a line was crossed when, with the blood still wet in Copley Square, he accuses the President of treason without a shred of evidence.

I considered posting something like “I weep for the parents whose children will come out dumber after spending a year in your classroom”, but I didn’t want to give him the satisfaction. After all, then I’d just be a whiny, intolerant liberal.
