Actually this article pisses me off. One blatant lie about med called Abilify and the disregard of the need for treatment including meds. More people are being diagnosed because we are removing the stigma and people no longer want to live with the pain, suffering and angish of mental illness. Also, because new science of the brain has made treatment and meds available that weren’t before.
Frankly, I think the explosion in mental health treatment is one factor in the overall crime rate going down in the U.S.
We also have a shortage in Psychiatrists -the M.D.’s that are doling out these drugs. It’s a problem.

I have a friend who recently took permanent guardianship of her niece (13) and nephew (10) from out-of-state. These kids have been thru the mill. The frustrating part is that funding their care isn’t the problem. My friend’s insurance covers children of guardianships AND the kids have medicaid. It’s finding a mental healthcare provider IN CHICAGO that is taking new patients and sees individuals under the age of 12.
Kids this age can’t go without their meds.

Welcome to the New 3D-Print Order:
Everyone knows about 3-D printed guns. Now a hobbyist from Tennessee has created 3-D printed shotgun slugs. Then he sent them to his friend, who took the slugs and blasted away.
In a video posted to internet this week, Jeff Heeszel, a 48-year-old industrial technician from Visalia, California, is seen firing three 3-D printed slugs from a Mossberg 590 shotgun. The first two slugs both hit their targets at a range of about 25 to 30 feet. The first slug penetrated a dart board. “It went right through that,” Heeszel tells Danger Room. And then carried on to penetrate through a water jug. The second slug blasted through a 2×12 piece of pine wood, and then bored a hole in a wire reel. A third slug with a three-pointed front was then fired at much closer range at a mannequin’s head, but just knocked it over.
Heeszel was surprised at the first two. “I didn’t think it would go through the first piece of wood at all, much less hit anything,” he says. But he also called them more of a novelty than a practical bullet. “I thought the thing was kinda lame, but I realize there’s a lot of novelty with the 3-D printed gun, and I thought it was kind of timely. But overall I think they’re kind of crappy little rounds,” he adds.
Heeszel, who runs the popular YouTube channel Taofledermaus, isn’t an anarchist or a political activist like Cody Wilson, who created the world’s first fully printable gun. Heeszel’s videos are more like Nickelodeon-style entertainment with firearms, with lots of slow-motion and videos of silly putty and frozen Vienna sausages being blasted out of shotguns. It’s also why his friend Tony Griffy, a 50-year-old design-build contractor from Chattanooga who designed the printable slugs, chose him to shoot the things.
“I might be a redneck from Tennessee, but I love the technology,” Griffy says. Griffy, who runs a YouTube account ArtisanTony — where he also shows off a printable knife and buckshot rounds — tells Danger Room he printed the slugs more for their own enjoyment. “Because a real gun shooting plastic bullets is more fun than a plastic gun shooting real bullets,” he says. “You have to spend six hours printing a barrel that you’re going to use one time, and it’s not as much fun. It’s more about the enjoyment and the sport. And if you’re having to labor that much, then the enjoyment goes away.”
Griffy says he printed the slugs with a Solidoodle 3 3-D printer — which retails for $800 — using ABS thermoplastic using dimensions from one of Heeszel’s non-printed slugs. Griffy then created the computer-aided design files, converted them to a stereolithography format, and checked the files for inconsistencies with the 3-D printing software Netfabb. He also designed slugs in three sizes. The largest slug takes about an hour to print. The others take about 30 minutes. He also added a lead ball to each slug to give them more weight. The final step was mailing them to Heeszel, who fitted the slugs into hollowed-out — non-printed — shotgun cartridges.

This is America, 2013 - Yet another new “museum”:
Metal T-Rex directs visitors to creationist museum
The Boneyard Creation Museum is now open along West Highway 2 in Broken Bow.
It took a whole year longer than owner Steve Sommer had planned, but the project is finished in time for this year’s tourism season. He had originally planned to open in May 2012.
The metal T-rex that stands outside the museum building should direct people to its location. The dinosaur replica is 21 feet long and 13½ feet tall. A Broken Bow business recreated the dinosaur from an idea Sommer got from a wooden dinosaur puzzle.
He got the idea for the museum after a few visits to the Creation Museum in Kentucky but near Cincinnati.
“I’ve been there two or three times and thought it would be something we could use out here,” he said. “I’ve had an awful lot of interest.”
[…]
The museum is a nonprofit educational museum that displays what he says is evidence supporting creationism and shows the difference between evolution and creation. Sommer said he believes in the accuracy of the Bible and that the Earth is thousands of years old, not billions of years old.
[…]
I notice that the local news outlet runs the story without a hint of questioning the promotor’s premise.

Well, it is one also—I actually have a special edition for PS3 that came with an artbook and I think a soundtrack—but most importantly, it’s a medieval-fantasy series on HBO. With more medieval than fantasy in these moderately-early stages. The VG’s actually an adaptation of the show, which is an adaptation of A Song of Ice and Fire book series by George R.R. Martin. It’s obviously not useless, it’s just what it is. A rating that high means there’s a very hardcore group of fans who vote high, and not a lot of people who watch and just go ‘meh’ and vote lower, and very few people who outright hate it.
It’s still information, just not perfect information.
Also, while there’s somewhat of a downward trend in the ages of Dr Whos (Drs Who?), its not a clean series.

A bad series of fantasy novels from someone who thinks that having all antagonists is hip & killing characters is advancing the plot line. Perhaps I’ll sound old here, but back when IMDB started one of its values is that you could find lots of intelligent critique of film (and tv). If all the ratings have become are battle grounds between fandom camps on which show is the most popular and everyone gives their favorite show a 10 rating, then the rating only indicates the ferocity of the fandom, not the quality of the show.
And there have been plenty of mediocre television shows that have numerous hard-core fans.

Right, which is information. A huge fan base is wildly into the show, and thinks very highly of it.
Perhaps I’ll sound old here, but back when IMDB started one of its values is that you could find lots of intelligent critique of film (and tv).
You can still find a lot of good critique there. Ratings aren’t critique, though, so I’m not sure how this connects.
If all the ratings have become are battle grounds between fandom camps on which show is the most popular and everyone gives their favorite show a 10 rating, then the rating only indicates the ferocity of the fandom, not the quality of the show.
This is a rather huge logical leap. That there are people who are wildly excited about the show and will rate it 10— are you saying this is not an honest rating on their part, that they don’t really consider it a 10? Or what?
I think I’m a little baffled that you seem to think that a rating system of any sort is going to actually analyze the quality of a show from some objective standpoint. You seem to be implying this was the case in the past on IMDB.
Rating is an inherently problematic task because everyone approaches it with a different attitude. For example, I think Big Trouble in Little China is the best bad movie ever made. I would not hesitate to rate it 10 out of 10. However, if I had to ‘rank’ it with other movies, and compared it to, say, The Searchers, I’d rate it about a 7. Which is the ‘correct’ ranking I should use when voting on a place like IMDB?
What about a movie like “Breakfast at Tiffanys”, which is a great movie but really fucking marred by Mickey Rooneys amazingly racist role? Do you knock points off for cringe-worthy, unfunny racism, or accept it as a problem of the time? This could apply to a shitload of old movies.
And there have been plenty of mediocre television shows that have numerous hard-core fans.

Years ago, when I was a kid, they were shown on TV. I really did not pay attention to them.
Didn’t Mickey Rooney start out playing child roles because he looked so much younger than he really was? I just remember one movie he did with Judy Garland, some kind of corn-fed musical.

It’s a really well done series. The sets are amazing, it looks great and the acting is excellent. As a casual watcher it’s hard to follow the plot at times and keep track of who’s who. Turkey’s reaction to protests follows Islamist playbook
Islamist leaders in Egypt, Tunisia and Turkey have shown an arrogance toward opposition views, breeding frustration that exacerbates civil unrest and instability and is likely to spread as democratic reforms continue to sweep the region, analysts say.
“The similarity is quite striking, (but) not that surprising,” because Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and other Islamist leaders “have a similar view of democracy,” says Shadi Hamid, director of research at the Brookings Doha Center.
They believe winning elections gives them a mandate and considerable latitude to pursue their vision, even in the face of significant opposition, Hamid says. “There’s less of an idea of consensus building or taking into account the positions of the electoral minorities.”

It’s weird for conservative intellectuals because they don’t want to appear total rubes for hating D.H. Lawrence. So they have to allow that some degree of (suitably sophisticated) “erotic thought” is OK. They are also pushed into this by the tendency of late middle-aged intellectual men to fall for 20-something graduate assistants, which has to be explained/justified.
On the other hand, 20-something women establishing power in the sexual sphere is anathema to them. So they also have to sign on to the slut-shaming agenda.
This kind of thing (protecting the rights of men at colleges to sexually harass women) allows them to satisfy both requirements.

Conservatism as currently constituted has driven me leftward. So has observation of how things ACTUALLY work, as opposed to the Libertarian fantasies of the Right, wherein The Market rewards the Deserving and punishes the Undeserving.

I get that. My point was that a lot of the things that happen in Game of Thrones don’t make sense within that universe - if it really is the power-crazy, no-rules place that it suggests then you wouldn’t have serious players just hanging out in the castle of people they’ve pissed off in the past, because that’s obviously a death sentence.
The show wants to have it both ways, with this elaborate honor code (for faux authenticity) coupled with ultra-violence and code-breaking at every turn (for thrillz).
From my (limited) awareness of middle-ages history (and I’m probably revealing my near-total ignorance by describing it as such) I think that the truth is probably quite a bit more mundane: there was less breaking of the actual “honor code”, but then that honor code was probably less formal and prescriptive than the one depicted in the series. Overall, people probably behaved more like, well, actual people.

I think the “people become more conservative as they get older” claim is probably somewhat true in a classic mid-20th-century “liberal democracy”. What’s happened in the US in the past 30 years trumps that, though, as the political system has swung sharply to the right, with the effect that an individual’s slight rightward drift becomes, relatively speaking, a swing to the left.

He was progressive on issues other than the issue of “Do people have the right to live if I think that I can terrify another city into surrendering by massacring them”. Also, if you killed a family member of his, he’d genocide you.
He was also really anti-gay. No, seriously. But he did establish what is thought to be the first real freedom of religion anywhere, and yeah, if you just surrendered that was what he wanted, he didn’t actually ever choose battle when surrender was offered.

Yeah. And the ways we’ll have to change are larger. For example, the financial markets are demonstrably an evolutionary system. They have a selection pressure, and it rewards highly risky strategies and penalizes safe, conservative ones. This would be true even if we didn’t do stuff like the no-strings-attached bailout.
There is no way a static set of regulations can manage an evolutionary system. We have to evolutionary regulations as well. Try writing that into law.

The non-Churchill slogan plays into the conservative mindset that it’s OK that their policies are really shitty towards people because “it’s the only alternative, any smart person can see that”.

Texas legislator drops marijuana cigarette while speaking on floor
While speaking during the Texas legislative session, representative Tom Alvin (R) Altruria, dropped something unexpected on the House floor. Upon picking up the item, cameras caught a glimpse of what appeared to be a marijuana cigarette.
He quickly put it back in his pocket as legislators looked on and then continued to speak. Several DPS officers were on hand but did not seem concerned about Rep. Alvin’s possession of an illegal substance.
Ironically, the bill being discussed pertained to decreasing penalties for the possession of small amounts of cannabis. If passed, the bill would change state law and no longer jail those with small amounts and would instead only require a fine.
Rep. Alvin spoke in opposition to the bill stating “marijuana is a deadly and dangerous drug. It ruins people’s lives and is so addictive that people can become hooked on it just by touching it. We have to keep in mind that allowing any steps towards its legalization will ensure that children have access to this drug. Only by keeping it illegal and imposing tough sentences can we continue to ensure that this plant is no longer consumed by people who should not have it.”
The first clue was Altruria.

I’ve never faced the financial hardships they’ve had to, I’ve never been truly worried about money before. I’ve never had to get up at 3 or 4 in the morning to go to a shit job that I hated just to put food on the table. Check this:
Dorothy Rabinowitz grew up “very poor” in a two-family house in Queens. Her father, a grocer whose family had been killed by the Nazis, was often agitated. “He would go to refugee agencies every day after the war,” she said. “I would catch him crying.”
You’d think her father’s family had been killed by bicycles.

Ironic considering what Republicans think of public education. If families are lacking in full-time parenting because both have to go to work it’s because these same fucking Republicans support a system of greed that requires both parents to work in order to pay the bills and essentially live a decent life. Can someone be this stupid? How can someone be this clueless. My mom started working in 1969. Is this a governor or a socially isolated reality TV star?
My mom started working in the early 1950’s, before she was married. When she agreed to marry dad, it was under the non-negotiable condition (written into their ketuba) that he would pose no objection or obstacles to her career ambitions.
She got that idea from her mother, my grandmother, who’d made the same demand a condition of her marriage to grandpa in 1928.
Homemaker moms are unheard of in my family, for many generations — moms and dads work, grandparents hang around the house raising kids.

She’s nuts. We have bike shares in Denver. I laid one out on a preliminary site plan for one client. No details. They’re all over the place now. I don’t like the credit card bullshit myself. But it’s not some freaking conspiracy. A true socialist bike share program would involve free bikes all over the place. American bike shares are largely a capitalist venture. What part of capitalism does she not understand?

Ha! They need to find “conservative reasons” to love cycling. Back in the day when I was a cyclist the main reason I loved cycling was because it was F-U-N. God these people are whacky.
Some blog, I think it was Cracked.com, asked why in all movies and TV shows (like Walking Dead) that portray an apocalyptic scenario, everybody is either walking or on some badass souped-up vehicles (where do they get gas?) but nobody is on a bike when IT IS THE MOST LOGICAL MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION.
Maybe “Premium Rush” which portrays bikers as badass (although really, really annoying to drivers and pedestrians) will make bike-riding more acceptable in movies.
Although bike cops still look silly, not badass.

My first bike was a banana seat Royce Union. The neighborhood kids along with myself would put the playing cards on the spokes held with a laundry clip to make a motorcycle clacking sound. I made a torch once out of a piece of wood with a metal pipe. Stuffed some cotton at the end and dosed it with alcohol and set it aflame. Other time we’d ride around collecting spit in our mouths to see who could make the biggest spit wad. Socialism!

Car share? Avis, Hertz, National, Alamo, Budget, Fox, Rent-A-Wreck? That’s car rentals.
These idiots are confused by the concept of renting a bicycle for use and thinking that sharing is socialism, when there’s a profit motive involved. Heck, even if this is being run in a nonprofit manner, they’d still want to cover costs - in which case, the company is getting compensated for the use - hardly socialism.

Genghis Khan was supposed to be actually progressive for his time. He pretty much left conquered peoples on their own, as long as they paid the tributes, and he included women in his councils. Also his DNA is found everywhere.
I loved this particular episode of Crash Course: Wait for it…The Mongols.
