As much as I dislike Greenwald, he does have a point re King.

That said, they’re both grandstanding, opportunistic assholes who kind of deserve each other.

Peter King has decided that there is not enough public stupidity relating to the Snowden mess, and wants to alleviate this deficiency.

Greenwald could be taken in for questioning. But he can’t be arrested unless you have a case. Can’t just arrest him. No case, no arrest.

Yeah stupid. What makes this worse is I believe King is a trained lawyer.

9 HappyWarrior  Wed, Jun 12, 2013 12:31:43pm

By all means talk to Greenwald but unless you’ve got a hellvua case, he shouldn’t be arrested. The last thing you need is a guy with a martyr complex who’s a trained lawyer being able to have a court room to air that.

I’m pretty sure if you questioned him, we would find out what he has, and it would likely be illegal.

Hell, he said he was going to release more information.

Drag him to the embassy and question him as to what he meant by that.

Charles & Co.-

Peter King was once thrown out of a British courtroom for being, in the judge’s words, an “obvious” I.R.A. collaborator.

Y’all should make note of this every. Chance. You. Get.

I’m a believing Christian, specifically, a Protestant one, but it usually takes awful behavior from the I.R.A. to make me feel my Protestantism in my bones.

Peter King is a blood-stained bastard who does not belong in public office; were he a Muslim, I don’t think anyone would have trouble saying that.

Some lawyers like to become simple mouthpieces for a person or ideology. Gonzales and Yoo are canonical examples, and Greenwald is trying hard to join them in infamy.

It’s just like telling someone they play a sport like a girl. I’d like to be able to play basketball like Brittney Griner. But just strike it up to Freepers just being confused. They loved these programs when one of theirs was CinC. As I’ve been saying, if right wingers have such a problem with what Obama is doing, maybe they shouldn’t have voted and support Bush’s expansion of executive power following 9/11. It was only inevitable that Obama would retain those powers especially as terrorist threats continue to exist.

I’ve noticed that with them watching their movies. Need to ask my two CiL’s about that. Here as you know, it’s a word that you just don’t say. Bitch is one thing but that word is another. i imagine we have a word that we casually use more that the Brits probably find more outrageous. Language is funny. No, I think Greenwald is the kind of person who would divulge CIA information. He his both ideological enough, and uncaring enough for others that he would find some warped justification for it.

That all may be true, but I was commenting more on the suggestion that the US should send out some goons from the nearest US embassy to drag Glenn Greenwald in for questioning.

That is a cure that is much worse that any damage Greenwald could conceivably do with the leaked information.

No more Gold-Plated Tin-Foil hats? This gives me a sad. :(

Domino #2: Gold: In a long-term bull market until October 2012, gold has been variously viewed as the “barbarous relic,” the only “true” currency and the ultimate “safe haven” against both currency collapse and runaway inflation. “Good as gold” and “gold standard” are part of our lexicon and demonstrate the yellow metal’s historic place as the basis by which true value is measured.

Recently, however, the luster is off the precious metal, and gold has been a falling domino, to say the least. Peaking at $1800/oz in October 2012, gold has fallen to interim lows of $1362/oz in April 2013, a stunning six-month decline of 24%. For the first time in recent memory, the “ultimate safe haven” is no longer deemed safe.

205 klys and whatnot  Wed, Jun 12, 2013 2:10:16pm

I am praying to avoid political discussions in person on this issue for the next week and a half, as my parents show up tomorrow and my in-laws on Saturday (for graduation!).

That being said, the person I feel the most sorry for in this whole thing is his ex-girlfriend. I hope the media will leave her alone so she can deal with all the fallout in private.

I do have some reservations about the programs as exist, but this isn’t terribly surprising because I was against the Patriot Act when that happened. I still think Snowden is a self-centered idiot who should be prosecuted.

Fat has to be cut into flour for pie dough by hand. A mixer would ruin pie dough.

Cherry for me, though the bestest pie I’ve ever had in my life was Gooseberry - red gooseberries from bushes my Dad planted. It takes like a cup of sugar to render a pie’s worth of gooseberries edible, but the high acid translates into incredibly deep flavor.

I had this pie ONCE, then the borough had to dig up that part of the yard to get to the sewer line, destroying the bushes, and M&D didn’t replant.

That’s a gigantic assumption, yes possible but it doesn’t just follow axiomatically in the manner you present. First off GG said they were in touch in February, depending on when in Feb that’s at most one month before Snowden would have started working at BAH, so he could very well have already had the job lined up.

I think part of Snowden’s problem is that he had serious blinders on. We’re to believe that as a security administrator he was able to roam the system and see various programs and capabilities without triggering alarms. That’s plausible, but I don’t think he ever tested out his assumptions, tried to actually use these systems tap anybody to see what would happen. He just saw that the operations people had fields in which to enter email addresses, phone numbers, etc, and never having been briefed for these positions assumed that there was no real oversight or technical tripwires lurking to make sure loose cannons weren’t abusing the system, operating without specific warrant authority, tapping their ex-wives and suchlike.

Even if he was a Republican at any point, what he said, and the things he did over his life, were a complete rebuke to what today’s teabag Repub party stands for. For example, he was in Memphis, the place he was killed, to campaign on behalf of city sanitation workers. He opposed, and spoke out against the Vietnam War. He was called a Communist. He was, to put it mildly, a raging advocate of Social Justice. And on and on.

We can probably assume that Snowden would have presented himself as a fellow ideologue with who’d worked previously for the NSA and CIA. That alone would have piqued GG’s interest. It’s entirely possible that Greenwald crossed the line, since he is so single minded about the issue. However against that we have to weigh the fact that he’s a highly educated, intelligent journalist with a law degree and ten years of courtroom experience. If anybody should know what kind of conduct is protected under freedom of the press and what kind isn’t it’s him.

Our boxer is the same. When we first got him, we warned that they aren’t warm weather dogs, due to the short snout making it difficult to cool themselves.

Our boxer is the same. When we first got him, we warned that they aren’t warm weather dogs, due to the short snout making it difficult to cool themselves.

A Foreshock of the Antichrist

In our culture today, we see things moving toward an embracing of all faiths. We are told that we are all praying to the same god, that we are all just following different roads to the same god. But I beg to differ. I worship the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. I worship the God of the Bible who sent Jesus Christ. There is no other God.

I think in the days to come, we will find a growing tolerance of any belief - except that “intolerant faith” as some would describe it (read: Bible-believing Christian). There will be less tolerance for that.

E.W. Jackson Faces Uphill Battle Because He is a Black, Conservative, Christian

Virginia Republicans made an historical choice by selecting E.W. Jackson as their candidate to run for Lieutenant Governor this fall. For those not familiar with politics in the Old Dominion, this is something critics would say is most unusual. But then, as the saying goes, “no one ever erected a statue to critics.”

Jackson’s critics seem to overlook the fact that he is a former Marine and graduate of Harvard Law School; his credentials are overshadowed by his race-he’s black.

I thought his troubles came from being crazier than a shithouse rat. Turns out the guy is black. Who knew?

New VA GOP Director of African American Engagement Has History Of Controversial Remarks

Ellison, the director of Pastoral Relations and Church Ministries for the Virginia Pastors Coalition, is a social conservative that has called for the shuttering of Planned Parenthood and publicly supported an idea that the devastating 2009 earthquake in Haiti was linked to a pact Hatians made with the devil 200 years ago.

“Today, this African American pastor is declaring war against Planned Parenthood,” he said in 2010, according to CBN News. “We’re asking pastors to pray them out and we’re asking Planned Parenthood to leave our children alone.”

Also in 2010, Ellison said he agreed with Rev. Pat Robertson’s controversial claim that the 2009 earthquake in Haiti was caused by a “pact with the Devil” that was sealed in a voodoo ceremony on the eve of Haiti’s successful slave rebellion.

“I know his comments angered a lot of the so-called, in my opinion, liberals,” said Ellison, who said he was speaking as an emissary of the black community, according to the Washington Post. “From a spiritual standpoint, we think the Dr. Robertson was on target about Haiti, in the past, with voodoo. And we believe in the Bible that the practice of voodoo is a sin, and what caused the nation to suffer. Those who read the Bible and study the history know that what Dr. Robertson said was the truth.”

In his new role, Ellison will work to establish positive working relationships between African-American organizations and community leaders and members of the Republican Party.

Please proceed.

The title of this essay is a rueful response to Snowden’s actions—and his reaction to what he did.

Dr. King lived with the threat of death every day of his public ministry. The fact that he finally was assassinated is merely proof of that. But he faced that life with courage, with magnanimity, with forcefulness. He didn’t write his letter in exile from Havana; he wrote it right there in a Birmingham jail, one of many times he was in jail for acts of conscience. He didn’t abandon the people and country he purported to care about; he lived their lives, shared their fears and hopes, tried to bring justice to a country which had lacked it for so long.

Mrs. Parks didn’t hightail it to Rio to rail against how evil the US government was. After her act on the bus, she accepted the mantle of civil rights symbol, which came with its own dangers. Her home was here, her people were here, and she faced any dangers with the same bravery and grace that Dr. King did.

What both Dr. King and Mrs. Parks knew was what Glenn Greenwald and Snowden refuse to acknowledge: the US, for all its many faults, is perfectable. It can change. It can grow. It can evolve. President Lincoln knew the same thing, which is why he fought to save the Union, rather than have the Great Experiment splinter into its constituent parts. When you send yourself into exile, and yet continue to speak about the country as if you have any actual care for it, then you’ve lost all right to criticize.

As the masses move:

Republicans oppose, Democrats support NSA surveillance, poll finds

A majority of Americans oppose National Security Agency programs using records gathered from telecom and Internet companies, according to a poll released Wednesday.

Fifty-three percent told Gallup they disagree with federal efforts to “compile telephone call logs and Internet communications,” with 37% saying they approved.

The poll differs from findings of a Pew Research Center/Washington Post survey released Monday, which found that 56% of Americans believe the NSA’s use of secret court orders to prevent terrorism was acceptable. In that poll, opposition was higher on a question asking whether the government should monitor everyone’s email to curtail terrorism, with 52% saying no and 45% in favor.

Three other polls released this week have found varying results in questions about the issue, with much of the outcome depending on the specific wording of questions. Pollsters typically find that kind of widespread variation on subjects that members of the public have not thought about extensively or are unfamiliar with.

The Pew poll, for example, told respondents that the NSA had been “getting secret court orders to track telephone call records … in an effort to investigate terrorism.” The Gallup poll made no mention of court orders. In addition, Pew asked if the government action was “acceptable” or “unacceptable,” while Gallup asked if people “approve” or “disapprove” – questions that can sometimes elicit different responses.

The internet pollster YouGov, in a survey done for the Huffington Post, asked whether respondents thought “collecting and analyzing Americans’ phone records” was “justified” or “unnecessary” as a “way to combat terrorism.” Asking the question that way produced a lower level of support, just 22% saying the action was “justified,” and a much higher level of people saying they were unsure, 23%.

[…]

“Polls” are what the pollsters want them to be.

Sensenbrenner: Obama Administration’s NSA Assurances ‘a Bunch of Bunk’

By Lindsey Grudnicki
June 12, 2013 1:01 PM

Representative Jim Sensenbrenner, who introduced the PATRIOT Act on the House floor in 2001, has declared that lawmakers’ and the executive branch’s excuses about recent revelations of NSA activity are “a bunch of bunk.”

Snoden a traitor?

Sensenbrenner responded, “No, I don’t agree,” and said that he would not have known the extent of abuse by the FISA court and the NSA without Snowden’s disclosures.

Informing Adar he is “under video surveillance,” she threatened legal action, tried to drag other customers into the dispute and ranted about going on a “one-way” space trip to Mars.

“I’m from Indiana and Kentucky, and up there, this shit doesn’t happen,” Chapman said, although later in the eight-minute video, she mentioned places “up there” where fast-food employees supposedly urinated on French fries.

“I want my bacon crispy and I want my people to be nice.”

Upon seeing the “dumb bitch” who served her the night before — an employee named Nithi working the drive-in window — she exploded: “You think you’re all tough big bad Arabs bombing the (World) Trade Center. I’ll show you tough.”

“Everybody on Facebook is seeing you, Nithi,” she snickered, apparently unaware that Nithi is a Hindu name. “Turn around and say hi.”

Dunkin’ Brands media chief Michelle King said Wednesday that the “difficult situation” had been handled “with grace and patience.”

“Dunkin’ Brands’ leadership has reached out to the two crew members featured in the video. Both have been invited to an internal company event in Boca Raton later this month for further recognition,” she added in a statement.

I can’t believe those are real paintings by GWB. They look like something that somebody made in Photoshop using the “Paint Daubs” filter tool on Abu Ghraib photos.

If you’ve seen his other works, it’s not like he has any mad skillz with a paintbrush.

New Mexico?

The Huerfano Fire is now 75% Contained.

Also, a fire that started in the middle of Pueblo yesterday got quashed like Mr. Sweet.

Unfortunately, on the other side of Pikes Peak, by Florissant in Teller County, another fire has started.

Gonna be bad all over unless and until we get a whole lot of rain. The same fire crews work the whole West, so they’re going to be spread thin.

If the Republicans ever figure out that they could win probably elections by continuing to vote the same way on all their stupid bills, but just have no comment on anything, we’d be in real trouble.

Fortunately, stupid/evil needs to evangelize.

Peter King’s asinine statement has caused Glenn Greenwald’s ego and self-righteousness to expand even more than I thought possible. He’s really working this, trying to make himself into a major persecuted victim.

Thanks, Peter King.

Turned on Chris Hayes, I think maybe for the last time. He had Greenwald on and was completely uncritical about every claim he’s made, even the ones that are now known to be false.

The more he preens the less rational he looks.

I’m listening to that; he’s going on and on defending his source’s credibility, and about what careful choices Snowden made in what to reveal.

Anderson Cooper is floating him now.

“He” meaning Greenwald.

Maine Republican opposes Medicaid expansion because of his manly brain

Unlike the men, the women were not considering potential costs.

And he’s not considering the add on systemic effects of uncovered people clogging up ERs due to lack of preventative care and using bankruptcy law to void hospital bills for emergency procedures that they can’t afford.

Implying that myopic idiocy is a male trait is insulting, no matter who does it.

I saw the ones of him in the shower. Threw up in my mouth.

re: #380 Jack Burton

Oh and he also might be a 1099, rather than a regular W-2 employee of BAH. I don’t know if that’s been revealed.

If so, his pay would translate to about what a W-2 employee would get if you reduced that by about 33-45%.

A 1099 with that level of clearance?? Fuck.
