It ain’t just the dudebros. They are just the fringe part of a far larger number of people here who are rightly concerned about near rubber stamp renewals of “temporary” measures and the rather severe erosion of privacy, even (among the young ) expectation of privacy.
The upside is what we are getting. A major review and public debate. We just have to sweep the chaff out more often than some topics. I don’t think Snowden forced his hand. Snowden laid that proverbial last straw on the back. If the reservoir of concern had not been there already this would have just blown over.

Bringing up the downstairs topic, it appears from the comments to that Politico Richwine piece that Politico is shopping for consumers from the same cesspool that WND and Townhall use.
Politico is run by one of the leading Reaganites, which may or may not be the reason why the management seems indifferent to the racism of Richwine, but I think someone ought to call him on it.
The “media” as an industry has no problem hiring racists - Brimelow for example, Buchanan the best known of the paleoconservative writers, and so on.
White-grievance theatre is popular enough in this country to be a successful cottage industry, and where there is money to be made there will be a good capitalist there to make it.

Finally, some real justice
FCC votes to lower costly prison telephone rates — effective immediately
The U.S. Federal Communications Commission voted on Friday to reduce prison telephone rates that had made it far more expensive for prison inmates to make phone calls than it is outside prison walls.
The commission voted 2-1 to reduce interstate phone rates for inmates that it said had been as high as $17 for a 15-minute call when extra fees were added in, the panel said in a statement.
The lower fees were aimed at helping prisoners maintain contact with family and friends, which lowers the probability that inmates will return to prison after release, the FCC said.
The new rates will also allow about 2.7 million children who have a parent in prison or jail to remain in touch, the statement said.
“The Commission’s reforms adopt a simple and balanced approach that protects security and public safety needs, ensures providers receive fair compensation while providing reasonable rates to consumers,” it said.
In an interim move, the FCC limited per-minute rates to 25 cents for long-distance collect calls, meaning that a 15-minute call cannot top $3.75. Debit and prepaid calls were capped at 21 cents a minute, or $3.15 for 15 minutes.

I feel Snowden was more important than you think. Not only for the spying on american angle but im thinking that the tech companies are furious. There is a lot of money to be made around the world and right now people/organisations are beginning to look really hard at security issues. Its suicide to be seen as a company that gives all the data to a foreign government if it suits that government.
Example. I know that the city i live in, Stockholm, have large parts of it municipal planning, and social services in the microcoft cloud, on servers based in the US. So the US government can then read privileged info that we as citizens are not seeing. Do I, as a swedish citizen, find that acceptable? No.
There is also the discussion about Facebooks new European server in Luleå. Under what law is that really operating, Swedish or US? And how can we be sure?
So part of the reason Obama is trying to talk about transparency is to calm the forigners so they dont stop bying US computer tech.
85 | Justanotherhuman Fri, Aug 9, 2013 1:30:58pm |
I hope people don’t confuse “we must be more transparent” from Pres Obama as “we’re going to cave in to you paranoiacs and allow you to see the inner workings of how intelligence is gathered.” I take him at his word, in light of changes already made in his administration regarding the NSA and the FISA court.
I mean, wouldn’t letting all that information out be counter-intuitive? There are policies and procedures in intelligence gathering a govt shouldn’t allow the world to know every detail about. Do we really want those who would harm and destroy for their own ends the opportunity to avoid detection?
And that’s what the Snowalds want.
86 | Kragar Fri, Aug 9, 2013 1:32:18pm |
Why does this bit about the FCC decision not surprise me in the least?
Acting Chairwoman Mignon Clyburn and Commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel, both Democrats, voted in favor of the change. Republican Commissioner Ajit Pai dissented.
Pai said in a statement that the new rules would be difficult to administer and have “unintended consequences,” since the rates would be too low for prisons to offer full phone service.

The conversation is important, but to say we are having it only because of Snowden bothers me. Even if it’s true, it bothers me. Not because it’s true, but because Snowden wanted to hurt the US, not help it by starting the conversation. I don’t want him to get the credit, even if it is his.
It’s a messy issue. I feel the same way about that Amash amendment from a few days ago. I have no use for a wingnut like Amash, and the amendment itself was probably a stupid knee-jerk reaction to events. However, it was a close vote, and it was not a party line vote.
I suspect that vote in Congress is also part of why these issues are getting some attention.

My niece posted this on FB:
Remember saving up every single dollar when we were little so we could buy something big, when having 12 dollars meant we were millionaires? So many people give up on this little piece of solace and spend that petty cash or give up believing that a few dollars could ever become something huge. I’ve spent the last 10 years selling eggs for 3 dollars a dozen, and today I cleaned out my old egg jar, and you know what? Those 10 years of savings have bought Christmas presents, birthdays presents, food, and countless other things…over $800 of singles thrown into a jar that my parents said could never be filled. So never fool yourself into thinking that your 1 dollar is nothing, because it’s something. Hoarder for life

Mystery surrounds Egyptian sphinx unearthed in Israel
(CNN) — Tel Hazor in northern Israel has long been a treasure trove for archeologists, but a recent discovery of part of a 4,000-year-old Egyptian sphinx has been a most unexpected find.
Inexplicably buried far from Egypt, the paws of a sphinx statue, resting on its base, have been unearthed with an inscription in hieroglyphs naming King Mycerinus. The pharaoh ruled in 2500 BC and oversaw the construction of one of the three Giza pyramids, where he was enshrined.
“Once in a lifetime you find something like this,” says Amnon Ben-Tor, the director of the excavation and a professor at Hebrew University, which sponsors the archeological digging.
“This is of extreme importance from many points of view, since it is the only sphinx of this king known in the world — even in Egypt. It is also the only monumental piece of Egyptian sculpture found anywhere in the Levant,” he said, referring to the region spanning the east of the Mediterranean Sea.

This guy is my freaking HERO!
A man who looked at an unsolicited credit card offer from Tinkoff Credit Systems back in 2008 and wondered what would happen if he signed the agreement, but only after writing in his own additional terms by hand.
Among the amendments in his version of the contract — unlimited credit, 0% APR, no fees, including the stipulation that he “is not obliged to pay any fees and charges imposed by bank tariffs.” Since the contract included a URL for a web page containing the full terms of service, the customer also wrote in a new URL of his own so that the bank couldn’t just say “but these terms are different than what’s published on the site.”
Per the amended terms, every change to these terms would result in a payment of 3 million rubles ($91,000) to the customer, or a cancelation fee of 6 million rubles ($182,000).
A pretty sweet deal. No way Tinkoff would agree to it.
But of course Tinkoff did agree to it, because it did exactly what most of its customers do — accepted this contract without reading it.
“The opened credit line was unlimited,” said the man’s lawyer. “He could afford to buy an island somewhere in Malaysia, and the bank would have to pay for it by law.”
He didn’t buy that island, but he did use the card for two years, racking up only $1,363 (including interest and fees) during that time. Not bad, considering the sweetheart deal he’d written for himself. But of course he wasn’t paying that amount because he maintained that he had a 0% APR and could theoretically just keep making charges on the sheer promise that he’d pay up someday.
And so Tinkoff sued the customer. However, the court held that his amendments were binding since the bank accepted them, whether it looked at them or not. The court said the customer only owed the principal balance of around $575.
Perhaps emboldened by this victory, the customer then sued Tinkoff for a whopping $727,000 for its failure to honor the amended agreement and for not paying out the agreed-upon penalty of $182,000 when it canceled his account.
“They signed the documents without looking,” explains his lawyer. “They said what usually their borrowers say in court: ‘We have not read it.’”
Tinkoff insists that it will be vindicated and that the customer will ultimately get four years in prison for fraud instead of the pile of cash he sought.

Eh, not really. He sent a contract back to the bank that was, presumably, using that bank’s logos and stationary, using their own imagery to mislead the bank-signer and make them think it was their own contractual language.
I don’t know if he committed a crime, but he certainly did not act in what I would consider an ethical manner. Not that the bank is pure as the driven snow, but…
Uh, I think he just crossed out the original terms and wrote in his new ones by hand on the original offer the bank sent him. I don’t think he reproduced anything.

After seeing about a bazillion tweets, articles and photos of the apocalyptic hellscape that Detroit has become, I got the idea to go on Zillow and look up the address of the house in NW Detroit that I grew up in.
Well, I was very surprised and pleased to see that it was sold last year for $90,000!
It made me very happy to know that my old childhood home is valuable and lived in, it also means that neighborhood must be very upscale.

If it was crossed out with a big magic marker and they signed it anyway, then my sympathy for the bank is essentially zero.

While most people would have just thrown away the letter, Agarkov decided to do something different. He scanned the contract in the letter into his computer and altered it in his favor, including, for example, a 0% interest rate, no fees, and no credit limit.
Unsurprisingly, this is a detail that a Gawker-network (spit) website would choose to omit.

Probably why it appeals to young males, too:
“To the extent that pot legalization and sexual freedom are defined as libertarian ideas, a lot of young people will describe themselves as libertarians, even if they might more accurately be called libertines.”
Trust me, there were hippies like that, too, back in the day. They only came for the sex, drugs and rock n roll. The serious stuff, like politics and economics, bored them.
I think some of the wannabees are in the tea-party now. They still like to protest about freedom and suppression, the man, race issues, etc. and dress up in old cloths and hats and stuff.

This, right here. His whole goal, from start to finish, is to make himself look important and to get people talking about him. Snowden is merely a means to an end.

He’s not interested in a “discussion,” few activists really are. He’s interested in dictating terms, in fulfilling his ideological endgame. Thing about activists like him, however, is that he’ll never be satisfied. He’ll seek nothing but perfection and find any steps taken as wanting.

The conversation is important, but to say we are having it only because of Snowden bothers me. Even if it’s true, it bothers me. Not because it’s true, but because Snowden wanted to hurt the US, not help it by starting the conversation. I don’t want him to get the credit, even if it is his.

I think most people didn’t even realize that the police can get a warrant to search your phone records pretty easily. You just have to be connected to an investigation. If you have a friend who deals pot who calls you a lot, they can pretty easily get a warrant for your phone records.
Not to mention the daily and pervasive indignities of real, physical searches that cause damage and chaos.
The FBI actively sends people to infiltrate groups, including groups that are pretty non-violent. They’ve been doing this forever. The NYPD spied on Muslims and the only reason they got in any legal trouble was because they followed it up outside of the city sometimes.
There is still not a judicial decision that mandates DNA evidence being entered if available. Prosecutors still fight against inclusion of exculpatory DNA evidence.
All these things are a lot more concern to me than metadata analysis.

They can’t stick with the facts. They lied and exaggerated. Why do you think they have to do that?
Yes, esp when so much of that was dated stuff; but even so, it was stolen and who admires a thief, really?

And all these are very real, very visible examples of the abuse of power. Yet we’ve gone over this same ground, day in and day out, for weeks and no example has been found of the abuse of metadata mining. DC Protesters Out Undercover Police Officer Through Twitter
[…]
After filming and photographing Rizzi at several other protests, including an anti-Bangladesh sweatshop demonstration organized by the United Students Against Sweatshops (USAS), Light and Canavan felt they had enough to file a lawsuit against Rizzi, the city of Washington DC, and DC’s mayor.
The lawsuit, filed on Monday on behalf of the USAS, does not seek any damages, but does seek a judgment barring police from continuing to infiltrate the group. A law passed by the D.C. Council in 2004 prohibits police from infiltrating advocacy and activist groups without permission from high-ranking police officials.
“I cannot think of any legitimate reason for the police to be sending an undercover officer to those,” Light told the Washington Post. “She was handing out fliers, asking to be put on e-mail and asking about future events. If the police wanted to know that, they could’ve checked the Web site.”

U.S. judge considers limits on Apple in e-books case
(Reuters) - A U.S. judge said on Friday she is considering imposing tough restrictions on Apple Inc for illegally conspiring with publishers to raise e-books prices.
U.S. District Judge Denise Cote said she was weighing whether to restrict Apple for five years from entering deals with publishers that would prevent Apple from discounting e-book prices. Apple, the maker of the iPad and the iPhone, had as part of the alleged conspiracy given publishers control of pricing.
“My focus is on making sure we don’t have collusive illegal activity again interfering with the e-books market,” Cote said.

That “growing segment of the left” you speak of are not in the mainstream and never were; they may have tended to vote for President Obama in 2008 (and maybe to a lesser extent last year), but it was because they thought that just because he had worked as a community organizer, he would push a radical agenda that they could get behind.
Guess what? Reality tend to have a moderate bias when someone becomes president and that pisses wingnuts and moonbats off to no end.

I really don’t mean to trivialize Kagan, who is also good, I just really really like Sotomayor and think in retrospect it’s incredible we got someone as progressive as she is on the bench. She’s already ruling against Obama on governmental powers. So let’s remember that about Obama— he appointed Sotomayor, who he can’t in any way control, who he knew was a true-blue privacy advocate and defender of civil rights, to the Supreme Court where he knew she’d rule against him sometimes.
He could have picked some ‘centrist’ judge who was comfortable with executive power. That would be what someone who wanted to expand executive power would do.

to store a yottabyte on terabyte sized hard drives would require a million city block size data-centers, as big as the states of Delaware and Rhode Island.[1] If 64 GB microSDXC cards (the most compact data storage medium available to public as of early 2013) were used instead, the total volume would be approximately 2500000 cubic meters, or the volume of the Great Pyramid of Giza.

But picking Summers over Yellen because the former has more well-connected friends is exactly how glass ceilings are maintained collectively by people who aren’t necessarily sexists individually. The behemoth nicknamed Zero-One-Four arrived at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware Wednesday, where it soon will be handed over to the Air Mobility Command Museum. Obama has as President created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play. Dialogue and negotiations are preferred as instruments for resolving even the most difficult international conflicts. The vision of a world free from nuclear arms has powerfully stimulated disarmament and arms control negotiations. Thanks to Obama’s initiative, the USA is now playing a more constructive role in meeting the great climatic challenges the world is confronting. Democracy and human rights are to be strengthened.

Very freaking big, the Yottabyte is.
Well, considering that Microsoft has at least 300K, or more, servers just for Xbox 1. And that’s just for a gaming system.

I wish we could just agree to stipulate that Greenwald has not done a great job reporting the story and then address the important issues that remain. There’s no putting this one back in the can, and focusing too much on Greenwald looks overly defensive, IMO.
OK tell us…what do you want to see happen in regards to the NSA?

I don’t know what to make of this one. Is the doctor ready for the Alzheimer’s Unit or is the doctor trying to make a statement?

Well, you know, secret messages could be sent and received by game designers and players in interactive games … . .

Actually, I prefer “the adult in the room”. Nice way of saying “pragmatic”, also.

Hah! This year I’ve earned $30 on CafePress. Mostly from a girlfriend who bought products I put a design I made of her Cat one them. Custom order.
I did sell 4 bumper magnets. I think I made $2 on them.
Do magnets still stick to bumpers? BBL fur real.

Probably not —But “car or truck trunk/hatch/door/boot magnet store” just doesn’t work.

I favorited it. I need to tattoo it on my brain, or at least write it on a post-it and stick it….somewhere.
Similar to hate/animosity/jealousy….is having someone live rent free in your head.
