What a hilariously stupid idea. Some fun reading:
pedestrianobservations.wordpress.com
I particularly like the idea of trying to evacuate a car in an emergency, two hundred miles from the nearest exit, through a vacuum, through a steel tube, a hundred feet in the air, in the middle of the Central Valley. And how long it would take to restore service in the case of a simple breakdown of a single car.
It’s such an outlandishly and fundamentally unworkable concept that it’s hard to avoid the idea that Musk merely wants to kill HSR in California. While he may surround himself with yes-men, we know the man isn’t a complete idiot.
Needless to say, the breathlessly fawning and uncritical coverage in the tech media has been discouraging, almost to a Snowdenian level.

Anything that mentions Sharknado has my seal of approval.

The existing high speed rail plains in CA are pretty stupid too so it’s worth investigating.

Oliver is great.
It occurred to me once, in a flash of revelatory insight, that comedians (the ones that are actually funny, which is to say their observations are reality-based) are really fucking smart.
Off the top of my head I can’t think of any stupid ones - it takes a real nimble intelligence to do this kind of thing.
I can’t think of any truly funny right-wing comics off the top of my head either. I don’t think there are any, or ever have been.
:)

PJ O’Roarke is probably the only one.
The problem wingers have is… it’s funny to punch up, to say the true things that others can’t because you don’t spit at people who have power over you. Right winger wanna-be comics punch down, they like piling on against the powerless, and it’s too mean-spirited to be funny to anyone over the age of 9.
