WATCH: The Opening Of Fox News’ ‘Benghazi Week’ Spoiled By Facts

The right-wing plot to hijack the September 11 anniversary gets off to a rough start
Politics • Views: 19,485

(Cross-posted at The National Memo)

We’re about to hit what has been a solemn anniversary in America for a decade — September 11.

But this year, Republicans, led by Fox News, are set to focus on a more recent terrorist attack — the one that claimed four American lives, including that of Ambassador Christopher Stevens, last year in Benghazi, Libya.

Making this tragedy into a scandal has been a Republican goal since Mitt Romney held a press conference to blast the president just hours after the attack occurred.

A year later, conservative activists still believe there’s a cover-up that needs to be exposed and even suggest that Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) is protecting the president. Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) suggested that the proposed strike against Syria is just an attempt to distract in part from Benghazi. And on Fox News Sunday, host Chris Wallace asked liberal commentator Juan Williams to defend President Obama’s dismissal of Bengahzi as a “phony scandal.”

Williams had no problem doing so.

“You had an accountability review board come in and make 29 recommendations, and the State Department has accepted just about every one of them,” Williams said, citing a report led by George H.W. Bush’s former UN Ambassador, Thomas Pickering.

“You say this is not going away,” Williams said. “It’s gone away.”

Fox News contributor Karl Rove then responded with his most hilarious performance since he refused to let the channel declare that Mitt Romney lost.

“You may be comfortable with the American people being told a deliberate lie by the administration,” Rove said. “But I’m not.”

Ironically, Rove was not talking about the Bush administration’s falsehoods that led to the Iraq War. He was referencing the fact that former UN Ambassador Susan Rice delivered talking points she hadn’t prepared that represented the best intelligence available at the time.

Williams was unconvinced by Rove’s and Brit Hume’s insistence that no, there’s still questions that need to be answered, even though every question they asked has been answered by Pickering’s report or the House Republicans’ investigation.

“It’s gone, baby. It’s in your head. That’s the only place,” Williams concluded.

The evidence that Benghazi is a “phony scandal” is overwhelming. But pointing that out at the beginning of Fox News’ “Benghazi Week” won’t make the Republican desire to exploit another tragedy that took place on September 11 go away.

The truth means nothing. Facts are only what the GOP/ TP says they are. The morons need fed. Lies must be properly watered and tended. Morals are for others. The GOP and the Baggers only need to have someone nod in agreement to call it real. When do these imbeciles hit bottom?

The Benghazi attack happened while Obama (D) was president. The 9/11 attacks happened while Bush (R) was president. Therefore, Benghazi was a much worse event than 9/11.

That pretty much blows 9/11 out of the water for worst terror attack. By about 66%

And if you displeased carburettor-sama, you were shit out of luck.

Old line:
“Carburettor is a French word, meaning ‘don’t fuck with it’”.

And the English, typically, ignored that. I speak as one who had to buy a whole bottle of transmission fluid, just to put a few mL in the dashpots of my SUs.

to find the ‘carburettor’, don’t you have to open the bonnet and turn on your torch?

rather dodgy, what? what?

Loved the SUs on my Midget, once I found a Uni-sync balancer in a flea market. (Car lore—SU stands for Skinner’s Union, supposedly after the leather parts in the early ones.)

Digging around SU a bit. Their first carbs really had leather diaphragms, but the firm was named for Mr. Skinner. SU made the fuel injection for the Rolls Merlin engines of WWII, so they did their bit.

re: #119 Decatur Deb

To nitpick: the Germans had fuel injection, the Merlin still used carbs - which gave fuel feed problems in neg G maneuvers.

“Miss Shilling’s orifice”

She probably saved the lives of countless pilots in Spits and other Merlin engined planes who could now fly a greater range of maneuvers

Looks like an early/late difference:

The following year the London factory was closed down and relocated to a part of the old Wolseley Car Plant at Adderley Park Birmingham. Morris Motors Ltd required 1,000 units a week, so £17,000 was spent on plant and equipment. With now strong financial backing, the company could develop new products, the first of which was the Petrolift in 1929 followed by a Aero carburettor in 1932. One type was fitted to the Rolls-Royce aero engines that powered the Hurricane, Lancaster and Spitfire. Another type was used on the Napier engines which powered the Tempest and Typhoon planes.

With the out break of WWII it was important that production was secured, so a duplicate plant was set up at Riley Motors Coventry. In 1940 the factory in Birmingham was damaged twice, so they moved to Highlands Road, Shirley, South Birmingham. Around this time the Air Ministry had set up a shadow factory in the Wharfe Valley Yorkshire, and in 1941 the SU Company acquired it to produce components for aircraft engines, including a fuel injection pump that was developed for the Rolls Royce Merlin engine.

You know, I feel kind of bad about it because, aside from her right-wing shillism she’s probably a very nice person, but every time I hear the phrase “S.E. Cupp” I immediately think of some kind of alternative menstrual barrier product. Like “I started using the SE Cupp a year ago and haven’t bought a tampon since!”

When Mitt Romney released a sharp condemnation of Obama, hours after the Benghazi tragedy, he was roundly criticized for making this into a partisan issue. It occurs to me now that had Romney simply given a classy response, sadness at the lives lost and resolve to stand united with all Americans, Democrats and Republicans, Fox News would never have gone crazy over “Benghazi” in the first place.

re: #123 Decatur Deb

Think the “fuel injection pump” was used for the “Pressure carburettors” on later models - a sort of halfway-house to true fuel injection used by the UK and US in the 40s
The Germans had the direct injection we’d recognize today.
(and were developing and using engine management systems too - I’ve got a book by a Luftwaffe test pilot who flew captured allied planes and he comments on how crude he found the American planes like the B24 - particularly the lack of engine management -as if they’d been rushed into service before having the level of development the Germans would use.
On the other hand, he pointed out, they were flying over Germany and dropping bombs on the more sophisticated German planes that were still mainly blueprints on a table)

Makes sense. Wild to think how long the SU carbs kept their market. My 73 LR has a Zenith, but some were SU.
