The protagonist doesn’t have to be a good guy to make for an interesting story. With the popularity of morally ambiguous male leads in shows right now (Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Dexter, etc.) I’m surprised that the original Bond, you know, the one that came before the movies, isn’t more popular.

He was great for 1957. But it would never work in the modern day. Breaking Bad’s lead makes crank. Dexter is a serial killer, controlled. Bond is MI-6.

re: #26 darthstar

I will respectfully disagree. Dalton was expected to be the return to grit after Moore’s Bond went so far off the rails the series became self-parody. It was too soon and it didn’t work. So they brought in Brosnan who was a transitional Bond- more palatable. Dalton was the proto-Craig.

I still think From Russia With Love was the best movie. Serious, with just the right amount of surreal and corny set pieces.

Skyfall was prettydamngood though.

Brosnan’s movies were bigger cartoons than any of Moores. I’ll take funny weird over stupid weird.

You know, like Diamonds are Forever. Now that was stupid.

Agreed — but strangely, the finishing sequence of “Licence to Kill” — with Bond destroying the four cocaine-filled tankers — remains one of my favorite Bond segments of all time.

Boozy feral pig steals beer, gets drunk and starts fight with a cow

A booze-pilfering drunken feral pig has caused chaos by running amok at an Australian campsite and starting a fight with a cow.

The belligerent porker went on a drunken bender after stealing and drinking three six-packs of beer that had been left out by campers at the DeGrey River campsite in Port Hedland, Australia.

These are the Syrian Rebels.

Battle of Maaloula

A resident of Maaloula reported that the rebels attacked Christian homes and killed several people. They also torched a church and looted another one, and threatened several Christian villagers with beheading if they did not convert to Islam. Many of Maaloula’s residents fled.[4]

This incident right here turned me against intervention.

These psychopaths are the most well organized, well trained, and well armed portion of the rebel forces. They will dominate a post-Assad Syria. And they are already embarking on mass murders, like we have seen throughout History.

re: #60 ProTARDISLiberal

Relative power doesn’t matter in this case. Putin and Assad just put what looks like a peace offer resolving the issue on the table. Obama can’t simply ignore it or brush it aside without looking like a “warmonger” to those who aren’t well informed and those who are critical of the US. He has to engage it at least a little bit and in doing so any momentum he might build with his speech tomorrow is likely to be negated.

The other target this is aimed at is giving skeptical members of Congress a reason to vote ‘non’ on any use of force resolution by giving them a plan to point to that would not involve armed force by the US.

I’d go on, but I’m just too tired. Please comment and I’ll read tomorrow morning if I can.

Yes, yes, the thought of the Assad regime flinging propaganda, even if there are elements of truth in it, make one’s mind completely reject the Big Picture, doesn’t it?

A dead priest (if it’s true) trumps 1,450 factually dead by sarin gas rockets, including 425 children.

The other target this is aimed at is giving skeptical members of Congress a reason to vote ‘non’ on any use of force resolution by giving them a plan to point to that would not involve armed force by the US.

It actually makes it easier for Congress; they’ll rewrite the Authorization to say “if Syria doesn’t give up their chemical weapons for destruction by September xx, 2013…”, the skeptics can feel safer about supporting it, Assad and Putin will know they have to follow through or the whole world will call them liars…

Well, they could change it to the Houston Frackers, to be relevant. Not so much “Oilers” anymore, in this state.

I used to loathe Lazenby’s take on the role, but I’ve come to appreciate it more as time goes by. I have to say, that while I like Roger Moore, I really didn’t like or accept him as Bond but then again, I’ve often wondered, just who in the hell would they have replaced him with…. Michael Caine perhaps?

Whatever—this is a win for Pres Obama and a part of a solution for the Syrian crisis, possibly without the US having to take any military action. International cooperation, initially proposed by Obama, is the most important key.

Syria conflict: France to float UN Syria resolution

bbc.co.uk

“The Russians have blocked all previous French-led efforts at the Security Council, says the BBC’s Christian Fraser in Paris.

“Mr Lavrov said there was a “concrete plan” for the Syrian government to hand over its chemical weapons arsenal.

“We [Russia] are currently working on preparing a workable, precise and concrete plan and for this there are literally right now, in these minutes, contacts with the Syrian side,” he said.”

Depends on which plan is actually workable, I suppose. And whether or not Russia continues to back the Syrian govt and wants the upper hand and Putin being the “hero” in all this.

I can’t understand why so many think Putin has clean hands in all this.

118 Justanotherhuman  Tue, Sep 10, 2013 3:26:22am

Cannot believe how many in the media are underestimating this President. We’ve become so complacent with “instant results” no one has the patience to work out a solution over time—when we want something, we want it now, like 2 yr olds.

Too many calling it “amateur hour”, outright saying Pres Obama is not fit for the job. Yet he is the least war-mongering president we have ever had, at least in modern times.

If he were a white dudebro, no doubt he would be considered “brilliant” by these same types.

Goddamn it, the white perspective is so filled with racist and hardened thoughts about anyone Black leading this country it makes me want to blow my shit.

No wonder the US is FUBAR.

I’m very pleased with my President this morning; maybe it wasn’t 11th dimensional chess and he planned this from the beginning, maybe it really is just that he was quick to recognize an opportunity when one presented itself, but whatev.

I seem to remember Saddam making an 11th hour offer to Bush to do something or other to avoid an invasion, and the Bush team shrugging it off since they weren’t willing to derail the war they’d been wanting since even before they were elected. Just one of the many, many reasons the Bush administration ended up with a 23% approval rating by the time they were done.

Just remember that Interfax is probably controlled by the Russian govt, with restrictions, if not an “official” news service. Remember: The agency was established in 1989 by officials from the international service, Moscow Radio, the Russian government’s international radio broadcasting service.

#BreakingNews: #Syria accepts #Russia’s proposal to put chemical weapons under international control - #Interfax report quotes Syrian FM

Will check for developments…and wait for revealing of the “official” proposal.

In March 2010, Hugo Boss was boycotted by actor Danny Glover for the company’s plans to close an Ohio suit manufacturing plant after 375 employees of the Workers United Union reportedly rejected Hugo Boss proposal to cut the workers’ hourly wage 36% from $13 an hour to $8.30.[22] After an initial statement by CFO Andreas Stockert that the company had a responsibility to shareholders and would move suit manufacturing from Ohio to other facilities in Turkey, Bulgaria, and Romania,

Saved some, but not all jobs. Still, the plant is operating, so there’s that.

“In the nearly two years since the plant was slated to close, things have been on the mend. After the last contract was signed, only 122 people worked at the plant, Milko said. That figure has increased to 147. The last contract was scheduled to expire in 2013, but the company expects its Made to Order line to do well and didn’t want to face negotiating an agreement shortly after the line was launched, he said.”

They get right in your face and step forward while yelling “stop touching me!” or “stop pushing me!!” and then a couple of people in the crowd will echo that, “stop touching him!!”. Syria accepts Russia deal on chemical weapons; France to seek UN resolution

worldnews.nbcnews.com

Because…

“Adding to international concern, Turkey’s state-run Anadolu agency reported that Syrian jets bombed the border town of Tel Abyad Monday, prompting yet more Syrians to seek refuge in Turkey. Thousands had already flooded across the border, leaving authorities struggling to cope.”

If Syria is still killing its citizens, it still deserves intl condemnation, CW aside.

And if Russia is serious, they will put aside their profit concerns/influence for sales of war materiel to the Syrian govt and lean on Assad to call for democratic elections with refugees allowed to vote regardless of where they have situated.

I would also want written guarantees from other countries that no chemical precursors or CWs would be sold to Syria and that Syria sign on to any intl agreement to ban CWs.

I’m happy that a deal looks like it’s going to get done. Securing the chemical weapons is a huge deal and reduces the chances that the weapons get loose - whether by rogue Assad generals or rebel forces that have come into possession of the weapons.

The question will be how this gets done. The UN will be involved in some capacity, but the ability to secure and neutralize the weapons rests with either Russia or the US, and the US has been more successful in eliminating its chemical weapons stocks than Russia. Russia has lacked the financial ability or tech to reduce its stockpiles in the way that the US has done.

It’s possible that the Russians will take possession of the weapons, which will be transferred and shipped to the US for destruction in either Colorado or Kentucky, where two chemical depots are in the process of eliminating the rest of the US stockpile (other sites like Tooele and Johnson Atoll have already decommissioned their neutralization equipment having eliminated their local stockpiles).

Oh, and today’s the NYC Primaries. Mayoral candidates for the parties will be chosen.

I’m fully expecting a runoff between de Blasio and Thompson on the Democratic side and Joe Lhota to win the GOP nomination outright.

And despite the fact that he’s barely registering in the polls, Anthony Weiner continues to act like a putz. He will continue to do so until his considerable campaign fund is spent down. That means we’ll probably see him surface again in short order to run for dog catcher or for the City Council, because he simply can’t go away. Heck, media outlets are paying more attention to him than those who have a realistic shot at winning, which can only help de Blasio since he’s the frontrunner. Guess they want the eyeballs rather than educating the voters as to what the candidates are representing.

At the same time, the race for City Comptroller is too close to call, with another ethically challenged candidate - Eliot Spitzer is neck and neck with Scott Stringer. I think Stringer may eke out the win, but it’s way too close considering that Spitzer has shown himself to be ethically and morally challenged.

I had the chance to watch a couple of the debates, and all I can say is that they were beyond awful. Candidates who could barely express their own positions or proposed empty platitudes on key issues that face the City. None staked out a position that represents anything close to being a vision for making NYC an even better place to live. They’re all nibbling away at the edges, despite real important issues facing the city on livability, transit, infrastructure, education, and housing.

Why the heck would Putin offer Obama an out on dealing with Putin’s own client state? That makes no sense.

What makes more sense? That the US floated a proposal at the G20 in the sidebar conference between the US and Russia to get Russia to take in Assad’s chemical weapons and transfer them to the US for disposal.

It solves several issues without anyone losing face. Assad can continue his slaughter of the rebel opposition. The US can claim they’ve eliminated access to WMD, and Russia keeps its client. Win win for everyone, except those who are still being killed by Assad’s forces on a daily basis. They are just a statistic though.

Yeah, I’m having this exceedingly hard time seeing Putin as concerned about the political consequences to Obama if he pushed forward with the strikes and Congress publicly rebuffed him. Makes more sense that he’d be looking at these strikes and the growing evidence of a disconnect within Assad’s command structure and becoming uncomfortable about the possibility that such weapons end up in Chechnya and then in a Russian city.

Casinos bearing his name have gone bankrupt. His corporate entities have gone bankrupt four times in total.

Let me repeat. He and the people he’s worked with did such a great job operating a casino - where the house is supposed to win - that it was forced to declare bankruptcy multiple times.

Casinos that still bear his name are considered the worst in Atlantic City and are crying out for makeovers because they’re so decrepit.

He tried his hand at casinos and failed. That’s a great businessman?

Trump may have avoided personal liability in that, but he deserves much of the blame for those business failures. He’s quite successful though in getting others to take the fall for when his businesses stumble.

I know who I am.

Without pragmatism, which Pres Obama was criticized for early on by ideologues, there could never be any way to try finding a solution to what Syria is doing.

As someone involved in Vietnam protests back in the day, I remember very well some of the left/libertarian leaning contingents criticizing “pragmatism” as something so evil they didn’t want to contemplate it. I never really thought that the anti-war efforts were the only straw that broke the camel’s back on Vietnam. That’s too simplistic, and not true, even as public sentiment gradually became weary of US involvement there.

Idealism is fine but it must be tempered with experience and practicality. Some just don’t have that, or they eschew it, solely in favor of idealism.

279 piratedan  Tue, Sep 10, 2013 7:57:03am

so to sum up… Assad reportedly launches chemical weapons on his own population, it gets leaked to the world via Doctor Without Borders…. initial world poutrage but after an initial round of saber rattling by the West and the Arab League nothing happens, so the UN sends in folks to confirm the attack….

Those folks come under fire and accuse the Assad government of covering up their deed with artillery fire…

deny deny deny, a few salvos putting forward that it was the rebels that did this not the government and those are pushed back because just how in the hell would the rebels deliver the weapons….crickets

The UN resolution gets blocked by Assad’s proxy player Russia as Putin stirs the pot letting Assad know that he has his back.

Obama steps up and says that something needs to be done and we’ll bomb the shit outta Syria if we have to… because a) no one should be using those weapons and b)…. see point a. He says he can act unilaterally if he wanted to, but plays the “support of the people” card and starts coalition building and then heads off to the G20.

Backroom whispers start up as the administration starts to show the intel… opposition hypocrisy from the RWNJ brigade and the moonbats who think it’s a brown people issue and we should just “stay out of that neighborhood”. Cameron fails, G20 happens, some quiet conversation as Putin gets a feel as to whether BMO is full of shit or not.

Putin senses that BMO isn’t full of shit. Offers a way out to allow them to confiscate those weapons and “transition” them. Putting the Russians in play, allowing them to take the “diplomatic” lead. All it has cost the US is some rhetoric and gas. The Russians now have the onus of keeping their proxy playing by conventional means and somehow in all of this Obama has betrayed/mishandled/stumbled/lucked into a position that still gets Syrians killed but at least not by American weapons and if it all goes south, Putin can write off Assad and our forces are still in the neighborhood.

I think I would give POB’s inaug the most validity, since security was a real issue resulting in bottlenecks and delays, but making estimates a bit easier—not so much in those others. There were 1M “official” public invitations, in addition to those for Congress and other officials.

“The inauguration, which set a record attendance for any event held in Washington, D.C., marked the commencement of the first four-year term of Barack Obama as President and Joe Biden as Vice President. Based on the combined attendance numbers, television viewership, and Internet traffic, it was among the most-observed events ever by the global audience.”

1m+ attended the parade for the Yankees down the Canyon of Heroes in Manhattan. That number is similar for many of the recent ticker tape parades in NYC in recent years (Yankees, Giants, Mets, Rangers).

Sturgis gets anywhere from 350-600,000 people during its August rally.

Nah, it looks like this is going to the UN, which makes the idea of Putin doing all this to get Obama off the hook even less credible. Why put yourself in the position of having to veto a UN Resolution ordering your client state to disarm if you don’t have to? Worse, if that Resolution passes, and Syria balks at having UN inspectors running around in 6-12 months time, Putin now has to decide whether he continues to support Syria in defiance of the Resolution or if he allows us to go ahead with strikes that are now in the name of ensuring Syria’s compliance with disarmament.

If we have to go with a military action we wouldn’t necessarily know if we got them destroyed. There wouldn’t be damaged civilian structures, civilian deaths, and the costs of attacking, etc., etc.

And, out of this, we get a potential solution to prevent further CW use by Syria without having to attempt to bomb and/or seize them. No “boots on the ground” and it appears that this solution probably also fits the desires of both the US and Russia in getting CW weapons out of an unstable situation. That the person(s) responsible for the earlier attack are apparently going unpunished for now is a minor point in comparison.

Everyone should be happy. Well, except the Syrian civilians who will still be getting conventional high explosives dumped on them.

And now there’s reports that the Russians aren’t happy with the proposal proffered by the French on dealing with the Syrian CW. Devil in the details as always.

Watch for the Russian delegation to make its own proposal - but for now, they get to give Assad space to operate once again. That has always been one of their considerations.

As I’ve noted above, there are real issues with how Russia/US/UN is going to get control over the Syrian stockpile. This is one of the more difficult things the UN has ever had to deal with particularly with an ongoing civil war where either/both sides could conceivably use these weapons against the other and reliable reports indicate that Assad’s forces have already used them.

Not too easy to handle and use, especially for the rebels who lack protective gear and meteorology. That’s why the ‘rebel false flag attack’ sounds like BS, unless they’re just stupid.

If you’re talking about artillery warheads, the rebels might not know they’ve got their hands on them, particularly if they don’t know what the Syrian markings for a chemical warhead looks like. It doesn’t have to be “proper” use and handling for them to fire off rounds thinking they’re high explosive and it turns out to be CW.

re: #407 Vicious Babushka

Hmmm… Obama supporters who are also for defending human rights and standing up against those who violate the CWC. Taking action can take many forms. That includes diplomatic action or military action (or the threat of military action).

They are not mutually exclusive.

Heck, the threat of military action (with or without unnecessary Congressional approval IMO) may have gotten the Russians to buy into an outline of a plan to deal with Syrian chemical weapons. Details have to be worked out, but who says the Russians have to love the plan. They just have to go along with it - or at least not stand in the way. After all, it’s probably their troops who will be in the firing line if this gets through the UN (they’re the ones with chemical weapons expertise); it keeps Assad in power and Russia uses Syria as a client state. This preserves that relationship for now.

Who’d be unhappy with the possible deal? The Assad opponents who may have benefited from airstrikes against Assad. And GOPers who are opposed to anything Obama does - whether it’s military action or diplomatic solution. Neither option will be sufficient in their view.

But allowing Assad to continue to harbor chemical weapons is unacceptable and taking them out of play is critical. How it gets done is far more important and critical than who gets credit (which will be apportioned after the fact).

Syria really can get rid of its chemical weapons without a UN resolution.

Sure. It could use them on the rebels/opposition. It’s found that world opinion may be harsh, but so are paper cuts. /

Alternatively, the Syrians could ship off the chemical weapons to Hizbullah, though Iran probably has an aversion to that given their experience with chemical weapons during the Iran-Iraq war. Much more likely is that Assad could publicly declare that the Russians will take control of their chemical weapons stockpiles, and remove them for neutralization/decommissioning. Having this go through the UN serves as a brake on US or French military action to get Assad’s compliance.

The Russians are doing their best to limit the effect of any action to get Syria to give up the chemical weapons. They don’t want to leave the door open to military action if Syria fails to comply, and they’re dickering over the terms.

Hard to tell whether they’ll push it or not. Remember that for the longest while now, Russia’s been pushing the “rebels carried out the attacks” line hard and went so far as to declare they had a 100 page report proving such. Voting for a resolution stating the regime is responsible would be an admission they’ve been covering Assad’s ass.

It’s quite damning. They highlight the fact that this wasn’t a single warhead fired, but a spread of weapons over a wide area, that domesticated animals and people alike were killed as a result of the attack over a wide area - further confirmation of a chemical weapon used. The symptoms point to a nerve agent, and the numbers likewise point to a nerve agent.

HRW deserves kudos for publishing the report, which is pretty thorough and damning.

Assad air force back in action in Damascus, hitting rebels

Syrian warplanes bombed rebel suburbs of Damascus on Tuesday for the first time in three weeks, in an offensive that opposition activists said showed President Bashar al-Assad no longer feared attack by the United States.

Not seen in action around the capital since before Aug. 21, when hundreds of people were killed in a poison gas attack that Western powers blame on Assad, government jets mounted attacks on three areas, some in support of assaults on the ground.

Beck: ‘That’s Why I’m Against War; Because It’s A Progressive Idea’

On last night’s program, where Beck explained that military action in Syria is all about oil and how President Obama is just like Dick Cheney, he began with a clip from that morning’s meeting where he told his uninterested captive audience that he used to support the idea of toppling dictators and spreading democracy … until he realized “that was progressive thinking.”

And since, for Beck, “progressives” are literally responsible for every bad thing that is happening around the world and has even happened in history, he has been forced to change his position.

“That’s why I’m against war,” Beck said, “because it’s a progressive idea”.

Use them or lose them.

Had the rebels aligned in a way the Libyans had done, they could have gone to NATO and demanded assistance. Too late for that, but could encourage France to add no-fly zone to the resolution.

And the French could proffer the resolution as is for a vote, and see if the Russians are going to outright veto it, or abstain, in which case the resolution carries.

The talk at the UN is just that - talk. They’re negotiating in public and it’s not pretty, but it also isn’t the end of things there. They say they’re opposed to action under Article VII, which relates to military action, but that doesn’t preclude Russia supporting (or at least abstaining) if referring to Article VIII, which allows regional action - as say Turkey, Jordan, Lebanon decide to help eliminate the chemical weapons - ultimately passing them on to Russia or US for elimination.
