PUTIN TO OBAMA: Here’s Why We’re Intervening In Ukraine

President Vladimir Putin spoke to Barack Obama on the phone Saturday to explain why Russia was sending troops to Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula.

The Russian government released a statement on the phone call, which was translated into English by Breaking News Wire.

Russian President Vladimir Putin told President Obama that Russia reserves the right to protect its interests if there is violence in eastern Ukraine or Crimea - @CBCAlerts
end of alert

A summary of what Russia wants:

2200 GMT: The UNSC meeting is now closed - A quick analysis — Russia has finally spelled out exactly what its given justification for invading Crimea is. According to their logic:

The EU, the UK, and the US incited the protests and fueled the revolt.

Yanukovych signed a deal with the opposition politicians that would keep him in power until, at least, early elections in December.

The “armed militants” broke this agreement by taking over government buildings, therefore:

Yanukovych is the legitimate leader of Ukraine and the people in charge are radicals, “Kiev,” the catchphrase for these radicals ho are now running the country, is sending provocateurs to takeover government buildings in Crimea (interjection — there is literally no evidence that this is true). Therefore:

The government of Crimea has asked Russia to send troops to restore order, and Russia has done so unilaterally because the West helped conspire to remove a democratically-elected government and put these radicals in charge.

The bottom line: the international community needs to help remove the radicals and enforce the February 21st agreement (which, by the way, would require reinstating Yanukovych back as President).

If this is not done, Russian troops will defend Crimea, and possibly attack Kiev to make it happen.

That’s it? Seems reasonable to me.

No joke: Stephen Colbert’s not a fan of Edward Snowden’s whistleblowing, the political satirist tells a packed house at the closing RSA Conference keynote speech.

snip

“Why, if Snowden was concerned with letting us know how we are spied on, why did he let us know how we spy on other countries? I think we should spy on other countries,” Colbert said. Snowden, he said, should be taken to court over the espionage charges.

For no particular reason, here’s the code that displays a tweet in a popup dialog:

$('body').on('click', 'a.tweetpop', function() {
	var m = [];
	if (m = $(this).attr('href').match(/(?:https?:)?\/\/twitter\.com\/(?:#!\/)?(?:\w+)\/status(?:es)?\/([^\/?]*).*/i)) {
		var msg = $(LGF.dialogs.lgfmessage).addClass('tweeted').blockIt();
		twttr.widgets.createTweet(m[1], msg[0]).then(function(element) {
			setTimeout(function() {
				msg.centerDialog().fadeTo(300, 1);
			}, 300);
		});
		return false;
	}
	return true;
});

That’s not quite everything you need to do it, but that’s the actual code that runs when you click a link like this one.

There are a lot of hotels close to the ACC. There is a Courtyard Marriott in walking distance, along with a Residence Inn, and an Omni nearby. There are others, but I can’t remember them offhand.

My personal recommendation would be The Driskill. It’s a bit pricy, but it’s a historical hotel here in Austin, and it’s really nice. It’s in walking distance of the convention center, it has a great bar, and they have decent food.

Putin is pretty much presenting the West with an ultimatum: Put Yanuk back in power and ensure he stays there until he can steal the election in December, or Russia will simply conquer Ukraine and install Yanuk back in power.

What Are NATO’s Articles 4 and 5?

Under Article 4, any member state can convene a meeting of NATO members to “consult” when it feels its independence or security are threatened. In practice, it has rarely been used and sends a strong political symbol to the greater world that NATO is concerned about a particular situation.

Article 5 is known as the “one-for-all and all-for-one” article, the keystone of NATO as an organization. It states that an “armed attack” against one member is an attack against all and sets in motion the possibility of collective self-defense.

Looks like the Wife’s 91 Civic is going to be getting a new (salvage) engine. Just got off the phone with the Honda repair shop and the cylinders and pistons are shot. $3,000.00 or so in parts and labor to fix. Asked how much to change the engine out if I could find one. $1,100. The local salvage yard has a complete engine with 157k miles (almost half of what’s on the old one) on it for $460.00. If it checks out after they pull it next week, she will be back on the road again with out leaving a plume of smoke behind her.

Nathan Deal: Tighten Access To Hospital Emergency Rooms

Gov. Nathan Deal has often called on Congress to reconsider the Affordable Care Act. But on Monday evening, he pushed his former Washington colleagues to revisit a separate health care law that fewer politicians openly critique.

The Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act is a 1986 law that requires hospitals to provide emergency health care treatment to anyone who needs it, regardless of citizenship or their ability to pay. It’s provided life-saving care to countless people, but it’s also strained hospital resources and turned emergency rooms into the first stop, instead of a last resort, for some.

“If they really want to get serious about lowering the cost of health care in this country, they would revisit another federal statute that has been there for a long time,” Deal told a crowd of dozens at a University of Georgia political science alumni gathering. “It came as a result of bad facts, and we have a saying that bad facts make bad law.”

Hope the salvage engine checks out. I’ve always wanted to monkey around with engine changes, but currently both of the Fishmobiles are in active use and I don’t have the cash to play. I’m hoping I don’t wind up having to perform one out of necessity.

Ukraine Finds Its Forces Are Ill Equipped to Take Crimea Back From Russia

the Ukrainian military has only a token force in the autonomous region of Crimea — a lightly armed brigade of about 3,500 people, equipped with artillery and light weapons but none of the country’s advanced battle tanks, said Igor Sutyagin, a Russian military expert at the Royal United Services Institute in London. The forces also have only one air squadron of SU-27 fighters deployed at the air base near Belbek.

A senior NATO official said that Ukraine’s small naval fleet, which was originally part of the Black Sea Fleet, had been boxed in by Russian warships.

Memorializing Events in the Battle of Balaclava, October 25, 1854
Written 1854

Half a league half a league,
Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred:
‘Forward, the Light Brigade!
Charge for the guns’ he said:
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.

‘Forward, the Light Brigade!’
Was there a man dismay’d ?
Not tho’ the soldier knew
Some one had blunder’d:
Theirs not to make reply,
Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do & die,
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.

Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them
Volley’d & thunder’d;
Storm’d at with shot and shell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of Hell
Rode the six hundred.

Flash’d all their sabres bare,
Flash’d as they turn’d in air
Sabring the gunners there,
Charging an army while
All the world wonder’d:
Plunged in the battery-smoke
Right thro’ the line they broke;
Cossack & Russian
Reel’d from the sabre-stroke,
Shatter’d & sunder’d.
Then they rode back, but not
Not the six hundred.

Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon behind them
Volley’d and thunder’d;
Storm’d at with shot and shell,
While horse & hero fell,
They that had fought so well
Came thro’ the jaws of Death,
Back from the mouth of Hell,
All that was left of them,
Left of six hundred.

When can their glory fade?
O the wild charge they made!

111 Killgore Trout  Sat, Mar 1, 2014 3:54:54pm

In Putin’s calculus, U.S. needs Russia more than Russia needs the U.S.

Putin, analysts say, doesn’t seem concerned about a looming breakup with Washington - he’s confident there’ll be no U.S. military intervention and has decided to weather any other potential consequences.

Olga Oliker, a Russia specialist and senior international policy analyst at the RAND Corporation research center in Washington, said the tug-of-war over Ukraine is part of a bigger divergence: competing visions from Washington and Moscow over the ideal future for Russia.

“We think what’s good for Russia is stability in the neighborhood, economic growth,” Oliker said. “But Russia, or at least Vladimir Putin, thinks what’s most important is that Russia is taken seriously, and that a strong Russia is one that sticks to its guns and gets what it wants.”

In the case of the Ukraine, analysts say, it’s likely that Putin will do just that. The United States and its allies could impose economic sanctions, kick Russia out of the G-8 forum for industrialized democracies and issue stern condemnations, but none of that is likely to sway Putin.

By his math, the U.S. and its allies need Russia more than Russia needs them. Russia exports natural gas to Europe, is the world’s third-largest military spender, and wields veto power on the United Nations Security Council. As an ally of President Bashar Assad, Russia has made itself instrumental in talks on how to resolve the Syrian civil war. Russia is also a key player in the mammoth effort to dismantle Syria’s chemical weapons arsenal under an agreement that saved the Obama administration from making good on threats of a military strike and one of the six nations negotiating with Iran over that country’s nuclear program.

But it has to be this because UK regional or Austraylyun just won’t do:

“Received Pronunciation

Received Pronunciation is the closest to a “standard accent” that has ever existed in the UK. Although it originally derives from London English, it is non-regional. You’ve probably heard this accent countless times in Jane Austen adaptations, Merchant Ivory films, and Oscar Wilde plays. It emerged from the 18th- and 19th-Century aristocracy, and has remained the “gold standard” ever since.”

Too facile. It involves us because we granted ‘assurances’ to get Ukraine to shred its nukes. Simple justice says we should give a proportional number of warheads to the Euromaidan kids. They’ll figure out what to do with them.

Crimea by New Yorker:
PUTIN GOES TO WAR

In a recent Letter from Sochi, I tried to describe Putin’s motivations: his resentment of Western triumphalism and American power, after 1991; his paranoia that Washington is somehow behind every event in the world that he finds threatening, including the recent events in Kiev; his confidence that the U.S. and Europe are nonetheless weak, unlikely to respond to his swagger because they need his help in Syria and Iran; his increasingly vivid nationalist-conservative ideology, which relies, not least, on the elevation of the Russian Orthodox Church, which had been so brutally suppressed during most of the Soviet period, as a quasi-state religion supplying the government with its moral force.

Reminds me. I saw a very funny movie on Netflix the other night: Cockneys vs. Zombies. Definitely free of Received Pronunciation, except for a simpering yuppie who gets it pretty early.
The film is a zombie spoof set in London’s East End, with a gang of hapless criminal wannabes teaming up with the residents of a a retirement home to resist a zombie apocalypse. Bond girl Honor Blackman (“Pussy Galore”) plays one of the feisty seniors. She was 87 when the film was made in 2012.

Ukraine army on full alert as Russia backs sending troops

bbc.com

“Acting President Olexander Turchynov said he had also stepped up security at key sites, including nuclear plants.

“Russia’s Vladimir Putin requested extra troops to protect Russian interests in Ukraine. It came on a day of pro-Russia rallies in the country.

“The move has been met with alarm from Western leaders.”

One explanation comes from David Silverman himself, who submits that “Just as there are many closeted atheists in the church pews, I am extremely confident that there are many closeted atheists in the ranks of conservatives.” It could well be the case that Rand’s extraordinary anti-Christian philosophy slips by mostly unremarked upon because there really is no significant objection to it.

“One person was killed and 30 people were taken to three hospitals with injuries Saturday morning after a giant pileup on Interstate 25.

“Denver police said 104 vehicles were involved in a string of accidents between Logan Street and University Boulevard that occurred as a heavy band of snow moved through town before 11 a.m.

3 musicians crushed in Bolivian Carnival parade

bigstory.ap.org

LA PAZ, Bolivia (AP) — Bolivian authorities say four people were killed and more than 60 injured when an overloaded metal footbridge collapsed onto a group of musicians marching in the opening parade of Carnival in the highlands city of Oruro.

“Interior Minister Carlos Romero said three of the dead were musicians.

“Dozens were on the bridge when it collapsed and the normally festive, even raucous, parade of colorfully clad musicians and dancers became a funereal march.”

I agree, the views of Christian conservatives and Ayn Rand, regarding Jesus, are as opposing as can be.

I suspect that what draws many on the right wing to Ayn Rand is her black-and-white division of humanity into good versus evil, producers versus consumers, makers versus takers. Mitt Romney’s comment about the 47%, “I’ll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives,” is so totally, totally, totally in-tune with countless similar sentiments expressed by Ayn Rand.

Christian conservatives and Ayn Rand are wide apart intellectually. But emotionally, the similarity is very strong: they can barely contain themselves (and don’t) in their contempt for people who, for whatever reason, might need a little help.
