Well,,, seeing that there is now an OFFICIAL Memorial Day thread, I shall repeat ,,,,
Thanking ALL veterans today, but especially the one that raised me. He quit school at 17 years old and joined the Navy to serve during WW 2. A radioman in the South Pacific. To this day he can still decipher Morse code. he told me if he could and they would let him, he sign back up today !!!! Fortunate that he is still with us, having just celebrated his 90th birthday last month
If my puter skills were better I could have posted a picture of him at that early age. I scanned it at home, e-mailed it to myself at work, but when I went to attach it it states it’s not in the right format {sigh}

There is only a piddling minority of folks who want to see guns totally controlled, a majority just wants to see laws that require more responsibility on the part of owners and dealers, and transparency on the market.

I think you miss the point. It’s not about prostitution at all. I’m sure there are plenty of hookers in Stockton.
It’s about misogyny and thinking all women should be available for sex to any man who wants them.

re: #56 Wendell Zurkowitz (slave to the waffle light)
The real conversation we need to have is one where it’s made abundantly clear that women do not exist solely for the pleasure of men. We have our own lives, our own autonomy, and control of our own bodies. Women are not just there to lie on our backs and let a man fuck us at will, or to carry his babies if he demands them, or to cook his dinner and wash his clothes a certain way.
That little shitbag at UCSB felt entitled to a woman. He thought they should fall all over themselves to date him and fuck him because he’s a NICE GUY and their refusal made them selfish, hateful bitches who were out to ruin his life. And he’s not unique. Lots of these MRA/PUA types feel the same way. They hate women because those women rightly refuse to deal with their shit, and they feel the need to lash out.

Well trained sex workers are there to do just that.
But we do not allow that trade on a legal basis, so we all we get are hookers and hiring them runs the risk of a permanent record as a sex offender.

That’s all sex is to them, a way to show off how “manly” and “hot” they are. Paying a hooker is the ultimate slap in the face - an acknowledgement that the douchebag isn’t “man enough” to get the hottest women.

That is a powerful article, one of the best I’ve read by Charles Pierce. A different excerpt:
It is a guerrilla war, fought on darkened streets against children in hoodies brandishing Skittles, against children in cars who play their music too loudly, against evanescent fears and the ghosts born of ancient prejudice and cultivated dread. Its battles are sudden but, sadly, no longer surprising. The whole country is the battleground now because cynical people have made it so. Our movie theaters are our Wheatfields, our Peach Orchards, or our Bloody Lanes. A quiet college campus is the Hornet’s Nest. An elementary school is Cemetery Ridge. Those are the killing zones. The enemy, we are told, is everywhere, and nowhere. This is the country that Wayne LaPierre, that malignant profiteer, talks about when he says, as he did at a conservative conference last spring:
In this uncertain world, surrounded by lies and corruption, there is no greater freedom than the right to survive, to protect our families with all the rifles, shotguns and handguns we want. We know, in the world that surrounds us, there are terrorists and home invaders and drug cartels and car-jackers and knock-out gamers and rapers, haters, campus killers, airport killers, shopping mall killers, road-rage killers, and killers who scheme to destroy our country with massive storms of violence against our power grids, or vicious waves of chemicals or disease that could collapse the society that sustains us all. I ask you. Do you trust this government to protect you?

And see, that’s how these guys feel. They go after the hot women in bars because that’s the ultimate conquest - a trophy notch on their belt that they can brag about to their friends. It’s not about the actual sexual act so much as it is comparing how hot of a sex object one can get. Treating a woman like a human being? Inconceivable!

Edward Snowden Seeking Return to US: Der Spiegel
Germany’s Der Spiegel, citing Snowden’s German lawyer Wolfgang Kaleck, reported that the whistleblower is “considering’ returning to the US under certain conditions.
“There are negotiations,” Kaleck told the news magazine.
“Those who know the case are aware that an amicable agreement with the US authorities will be most reasonable.”
He noted there were efforts at least in the medium term to find a solution that is tolerable for Snowden. However, Snowden is not involved in the negotiations, according to the lawyer, who is also secretary-general for the European Centre for Constitutional and Human Rights.

It is, at its core, the same old story: sex as control. A guy should be able to fuck anything that moves, and any woman who says no to him is denying what is his by right of gender.

And yet…I recall hearing an interview a number of years ago with an anonymous guy who was engaging in sex tourism in Thailand. He described the “why” as something along the lines of: “You get off the plane and walk through the airport and there’s a girl looking at you. Not the guy to the right of you or the guy to the left of you. She’s looking at you.”
Obviously he knew he’d be paying for sex, but it was still an ego boost for him.

Also, just because you are nice to someone, or befriend them and listen to them, or buy them a present or take them to dinner, does not mean they owe you jack shit. (which is pretty much the basis of this whole Nice Guy crap) Women are not “investments” with a payoff. And that right there is WHY these guys are not finding the girl of their dreams, along with just a general loathing of women that is most likely palpable from a mile away.
So now these punks are saying that unless a woman “takes one for the team” (which is just so vomitrocious I can’t even) more women are going to die. Holy Fuck, what THE hell?

We women need to recognize, and verbalize appreciation for, that sort of thing.
My husband has never been much for the traditional romantic stuff, but when we had an infant and a toddler getting me up more than once every night and I needed my sleep, he’d turn off the alarm within seconds of it going off (not his natural inclination) and get up and dress in the dark so as to let me get a little extra sleep. I recognized that it was his way of telling me he loved me and cared that I didn’t become a sleep deprived wreck. (I was already pretty close to that state.) But I did let him know that I knew he was doing it because he loved me.

Well trained sex workers are there to do just that.
But we do not allow that trade on a legal basis, so we all we get are hookers and hiring them runs the risk of a permanent record as a sex offender.
He could have gone over to Nevada if all he wanted was to lose his virginity. But and TDFL and Lidane have noted, this scumbag felt entitled to sex with a woman. The idea of compensating said woman directly would have clashed with his sense of entitlement.
The thing that would have quelled this overaged adolescent (whom I will not dignify by calling a man) would be to have gotten him an severe reality check, one harsh enough to break his sense of entitlement.

i haven’t had an egg cream in decades
Proper egg cream:
Milk, Fox’s U-Bet, Seltzer. A generous helping of the syrup, then the milk, and then seltzer, stir - and you get a dark brown chocolate sensation with a white cream head. When done right, it’s a thing of art.

A little Memorial Day tribute to my uncle Pete, WWII vet and father figure to me:
Uncle Pete flew bombing missions over Czechoslovakia and Poland and German rail lines in order to disrupt their supply lines. He was shot down over Czechoslovakia and spend two weeks as an MIA behind enemy lines with only his parachute to give him guidance of how to find his way back to his unit (parachutes did double duty as a map). My grandparents were terrified that they’d never see their son again. And my mom and the rest of the family would occasionally hear the horrible shrieks of a wife or mother upon the visit of an Army officer arriving at their front door with a chaplain standing nearby. Their fear was that this was going to be our family’s fate too. But thankfully that never came, since Pete found his way back to his unit with the help of Czech partisans helping the allied forces. He never talked about the war. I only learned of his service and heroism from my mom and other family members. We lived with him and his wife and youngest daughter Betsy in the mid and late seventies for short whiles. He was such a father figure to me when I was a teenager. I found out from my mom that he had terrible nightmares every night as a consequence of the war, even thirty plus years later. None of us had heard of PTSD back then. We just knew not to talk to him about the war.
Uncle Pete was a good and just man. I loved him dearly as a father to me.

Everything he said. While you’re downtown, however, I would hit the Driskill Bar for a Batini just to say you tried one. They were named the official cocktail of Austin, so it’s mostly a touristy thing, but they’re good. And strong. Heh.
I’ll throw in a few recommendations:
Kebabalicious is one of my favorite trailers downtown. SO worth the money. I would go there all the time when I was working. When you’re done there, hit Gourdough’s or Fried and True for dessert.
Another good option on South Congress is Hopdoddy. Be prepared to wait a while for your food, but it’s worth it. And my personal favorite restaurant in South Austin is Habana. Their lechon asado is awesome. Love it!

I’ve got a friend - no, I had a friend, and now I follow his wish - who said what he’d want is a bottle of Guinness and a shot of Johnnie Walker at his grave every year. And when I lived within a two hour drive of his grave that’s what I did. Found a mutual friend who lives in the area and he’s doing it now instead so I just send a share of money.

Of course, given the ferocity and skill Chechens demonstrated in urban warfare in Grozny and Fallujah, employing them is not just bluster.

My new dive gear came in the the other day, it all shipped in boxes from Adorama (an online photography supplier I use). I suspect that they and the company I got the dive gear I bought. It seems that LeisurePro (Scuba and dive gear) and Adorama must be the same people, since they have an identical address in NY. I suspect that they are also Hassidic owned, since they close mid-afternoon on Friday, and don’t reopen until Sunday.
I don’t know if that counts as synchronicity or not, but it made me do a second take, since I swore I wasn’t buying more camera gear.

In terms of France’s role as an international player, Ms. Le Pen’s party has called for the creation of a Paris-Berlin-Moscow axis. She describes Mr. Putin as “a patriot”—and generally sounds, after a pre-election trip to Moscow, as intent as the Russian president to neuter the EU as a Western political force.
Mr. Putin couldn’t have a more comfortably avowed ally. “He’s aware we are defending common values,” she said of the Kremlin ruler. Which ones? Ms. Le Pen’s response: “The Christian heritage of European civilization.”

As for the rethinking of values in European countries, yes, I agree that we are witnessing this process. So-called conservative values are acquiring a new significance. I spoke about that more than once. The victory of Viktor Orban in Hungary, the success of the conservative forces in the latest election there, the success of Marine Le Pen in France (she came third in the municipal elections), the growth of such trends in other countries is obvious.

Thomas Piketty’s Capital was still No 3 on the Amazon bestseller list when the Financial Times dropped its front-page bombshell. By picking through the spreadsheets the “rock-star French economist” had placed online, the FT concluded that his key data appeared to be “constructed out of thin air”.Piketty’s claim that inequality in the west has risen since the 1970s is wrong, says the FT’s Chris Giles. And on this basis, Piketty’s view that rising inequality is the central contradiction of capitalism, and will get worse, is also wrong.
It is always right to trawl through data. There is so much grossing and smoothing in economics, and so little of the realtime peer review that happens in science, that data should always be challengable. But the gleeful response to Piketty’s “errors” on the rightwing Twittersphere did not happen because some FT pointy-heads discovered a few fat-finger inputs. It happened because, if Giles is right, then all the gross designer bling advertised in the FT’s How To Spend It can be morally justified: it is evidence of rising social wealth in general, not the excess of a few Rolex types.

A good reason for women to boycott Facebook forever. They. Don’t. Care. About. You.
Facebook removes page glorifying Isla Vista killer
The social network has acted to remove the page about Elliot Rodger, a day after refusing to do so
The reason it was taken down appears to be anything but the fact that it was a hate site against women.
“While the company wouldn’t comment specifically on the reasons the page had been removed, it pointed out that registering under a false identity, improperly collecting personal information, infringing intellectual property rights and violating community standards are all reasons content can be removed from the site.”

When I’m working with the door locked (no customers) I can listen to one of my favorite Paul Simon albums. It’s ordinarily highly NSFW.
Songs from The Capeman is the ninth studio album by Paul Simon, released in 1997. It contains Simon’s own performances of songs from the Broadway musical he wrote and produced called The Capeman augmented by members of the original cast. A departure musically from his earlier work, the album features doo wop, rock ‘n’ roll and Puerto Rican rhythms. The stage show was a commercial flop, losing $11 million, and the album did not sell well.[1] It peaked at #42 on the Billboard 200, the lowest chart position in Simon’s career.

And she was 10? 10?

The problem with how our gun laws are written is often than not until they do a mass shooting, the shooter is a totally legal and responsible gun owner. A conversation about how an obviously troubled young man having easy access to guns? Oh hell no, let’s get one of our nutcases on to claim that it was homosexuality that caused Elliott’s violent attack. The events are intended, according to the Constitutional Protection Report 2007 of the Thuringian Ministry of Interior of the efforts of the extreme right, “more participants to win public campaigns of the party to increase the acceptance of the NPD in action-oriented right-wing extremist spectrum and to show in greater public presence,” and have a “high priority” within the scene.

WTF is the New York Post thinking? What public interest is served by dragging her into this story?
They are throwing her name and picture up and saying “SHE’S RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS” with “according to the killer” as a footnote. They’re basically adopting Rodger’s assertion that the women that spurned him were attractive but cruel bitches.
Look at the first paragraph of the article:
The aspiring model whose childhood rejection of Elliot Rodger lit the fuse that turned him into a murderous madman barely remembers him, her dad told The Post on Monday.
That’s right, her rejection of Rodger at age 10 is what led to this nightmare. FFS.
Why should she remember him? By Rodger’s own account, most of his interactions with women involved him expecting women to throw themselves at him and seething in rage when they didn’t.

At that age (and a tad older) , I was EXTREMELY unconfident around girls. I couldn’t even ask a friend to ask a friend to approach a girl for me. Even when someone would tell me that ‘she” liked me I was too shy to act on it
Yeah, that’s pretty much how I was. I’m sure there were girls that liked me, but all of my friends - the ones who could’ve told me - were just as shy and awkward around the womenfolk as I was. I didn’t have any real female friends until I went to college.

I was a later bloomer than that even
But somewhere over the years that shyness/ unconfidence went away. I became as comfortable around girls/ women as I was my male friends

Dr. Lizardo….. They are having an exhibit of Tatra autos and trucks at the auto museum here in Nashville. I’m hoping to get down there next Saturday. Last year I got to ride in a 47 Tatra. They do demos and open up some of the normally closed parts of the museum on Black Friday, much better than the mall.
Sweet.
You don’t see too many of those running around here in the Czech Republic - they’re mostly museum pieces, and there’s a few in the hands of private collectors. I can imagine they must sell for a fortune.

I think my Asperger’s still feeds into my anxiety and shyness around women but I think it was also had to do with being overweight and not feeling confident in myself. It can be tough especially when you’re seeing friends and family with really good relationships that seem to happen with apparent ease. And in that sense, that is one way I can in a bizarre way relate to Rodger. Of course, the difference in the end is I’ve never blamed women or other guys for those problems. I’ve seen myself make improvements. When I was 17, I don’t think I could have asked any girls out. Now at 26, I feel much more comfortable doing so.

Kent is a brand not found in bike shops. Of the non-bike shop brands, it tends to be one of the better ones. They are actually planning to bring manufacturing back to the US soon!
I don’t know anything about that model, I just looked at a review on a bike forum. Since it’s a basic one speed, it’s hard to go wrong. Set the seat high enough so she has good leg extension at the bottom of the pedal stroke. If the reach to the handlebar is comfortable, she’s all set. 24” wheels make it a small bike. If she’s over 5’ 5” or so, it might be too small. Keep the tires inflated to the maximum marked on the sidewall. If the area she wants to ride is flat, it should be fine. If not, she might want some gears to handle the hills. You’d have to start over.

It’s foolish. I’ve lived here in Europe long enough to see what lurks under the veneer of the “European way”. And it ain’t always pretty. Casual racism, bigotry, xenophobia, etc.
I guess when you combine that with the fact that on a subconscious level, Europeans recognize their continent is turning into a geriatric ward, it makes them deeply afraid of the future.

In my experience in the deep South, the AA folks had the most courtly manors of all of the residents. The wooly grey haired public librarians seemed the most liberal.

In other words, the workers in China are starting to take their jobs for granted, so it’s time to ship those jobs back to the states, where the locals are desperate for anything they can get.
There was an NPR series on this awhile back; “Planet Money Makes a T-shirt.”
Industries follow desperation. With a global transport system, it’s easy to dump workers/subcontracting companies and change location.

You wouldn’t believe what people say to me because I’m white and they think I’ll agree w/them. Depending on the nature of the racism, I either correct them in a nice way, or give them a dressing down they don’t forget. I’ve been called an Nclang! lover more than once for speaking my mind.

There were more Hurricanes in the Battle of Britain than Spitfires, yet the latter is the plane most folks think of.

True. They were just ramping up Spit production. The Hurricane saved England.

The Mosquito was made mostly of marine-grade plywood. Not sure about the Lancaster, but it wouldn’t surprise me.

The ‘Cane was a solid, reliable, forgiving plane. Not as fast or maneuverable as the opposition, but if you knew how to handle it (and had plenty of ammo for its 8 light automatic rifles), extremely deadly.

Thank. From both the the wife and me. We will take your advice into consideration (and practice). We both hope her experience to be both beneficial as well as enjoyable

The Mosquitos were mostly wood. Had the virtue of the parts been subcontracted out to companies that had previously built furniture, pianos, and other assorted carpentry. It was also the fastest bomber in the world when it first flew.

Mosquito was mostly plywood. It got through the selection process for development because it didn’t use strategic materials.

I knew a guy who flew recon in a Mosquito.
He talking about how the bullets would just “whoosh” through it almost without noise. The bullets didn’t decelerate, so they rarely tore anything up. Just tiny holes in canvas.

Yeah. Mostly in Japan and Europe now. Not the big deal it used to be. Especially for kids. Kind of sad really since they’re not really making things with their hands much like we used to. IMO.

re: #419 HappyWarrior
The problem with how our gun laws are written is often than not until they do a mass shooting, the shooter is a totally legal and responsible gun owner. Honestly, I think we really need to start having a serious conversation about this. There’s something wrong if you ask me with how easy it is to obtain an gun.
The police who went to see him before he went on this rampage didn’t find anything untoward. They might not have had access to his manifesto or videos, which would and should have raised alarms. Or, they didn’t think that they could act on what they found. Precisely what they did or didn’t do in those confrontations will be investigated. Could that have prevented this carnage? Possibly. But this guy’s problems go back a long way and if he was intent upon carrying out his worldview, he was going to seek out a way to do so. To me, that would indicate harms to himself and others, and should have indicated a need to prevent him from getting firearms.
But because he could put on appearances of being “normal” the police apparently couldn’t do anything to keep him from amassing the weapons he eventually used to murder so many innocents.
And yet there are people who want to blame the victims or the relatives of the victims for being angry that this guy was able to legally purchase these guns all along? Or that if one of the victims had a gun they might have had a chance? Really? Getting surprised and killed in a drive by gives you a chance? The victims didn’t have a chance. And once the bullets start flying, the odds increase that other innocent bystanders get hit in the cross fire.

Generations eh? Apparently they can jump around within the span of a couple of years.
Remington moved production lines from Maine to NY. Just two years later, they’re moving those lines to Alabama (all for tax benefits). Yeah, they support the community for generations.
