Massive NSA Spying Revealed… Oh Wait. It’s Only 248 People.

Insane hyperventilating fear-mongering stories boil down to fewer than 300 people

Today the NSA disclosed statistics on their surveillance activities, and they’ve been spying willy nilly on an incredible number of people in America.

That’s if you consider 248 people to be an “incredible number.”

The National Security Agency was interested in the phone data of fewer than 250 people believed to be in the United States in 2013, despite collecting the phone records of nearly every American.

As acknowledged in the NSA’s first-ever disclosure of statistics about how it uses its broad surveillance authorities, released Friday, the NSA performed queries of its massive phone records troves for 248 “known or presumed US persons” in 2013.

During that year, it submitted 178 applications for the data to the Fisa court during that period, which, as first revealed by the Guardian thanks to leaks from Edward Snowden, permitted the ongoing, daily collection of practically all US phone records.

The number of “selectors” NSA queried from that data trove, a term referring to an account and not necessarily an individual user, was 423 in 2013, an increase from the “less than 300 times” it searched through the data trove in 2012, according to former deputy NSA director John Inglis.

It’s almost funny how Spencer Ackerman still tries to continue the MASSIVE SPYING talking points, even as his article reveals that it’s anything but.

OF COURSE THE NSA WILL DENY TEH MASSIVE SPYING!!11!

He’s probably still ‘editing’ it to make sure his name is on there, so he can claim being targeted specifically and rake in more $$$.

The most interesting thing about that GG Tweet is that the Valleywag article mentioned says nothing about GG.

I don’t doubt that PanderDaily didn’t want to ruffle its VC funding sources, but that’s a huge ego leap there.

Charles, I thought they were going to “name names”.

Anyway, they still made it appear to be egregious, even though they were only interested in less than 250 people:

“The National Security Agency was interested in the phone data of fewer than 250 people believed to be in the United States in 2013, despite collecting the phone records of nearly every American.”

They were interested in those people because of information they already had on them and their activities and didn’t know who all they had called—which is why they had to pull the metadata—for match-ups, not for “records” which implies they were looking for everyone’s conversations in that collection.

So, yeah, if I had talked to one of those people, they’d probably have gotten a FISA order on me, too.

re: #12 Rev_Arthur_Belling

ETA: She was supposed to “introduce” him, no doubt praising him from the high heavens in the intro as some kind of socialist hero.

15 lawhawk  Jun 27, 2014 3:59:58pm

248 people based on 178 FISA warrant requests.

That’s pretty specific. And pretty far from widespread spying on American citizens.

It’s the exact opposite of massive data vacuuming that Greenwald was hyper-bloviating about.

Following the law, requesting warrants. Seeking a limited number of individuals.

This is what Greenwald warned was overwhelming and invasive?

OT for a feline overlord update.
Doorframe had a post-op visit to the vet today. His paw is healing up very well. However, the vet found a small hernia in his abdomen, but it doesn’t require surgical invention yet.
More worrisome is that what I thought was ear damage from a possible fight turns out to be skin cancer (being a mostly white cat, the vet says he probably got sunburned while being an outdoor cat since his previous owners threw him away). Vet treated the lesions with silver nitrate. Cat was NOT happy and bit MrBWS during said treatment.
Soon as they returned home, Doorframe told me (at great length) all about the rude treatment he received, demanded fuds and massive sympathy attention, and then retreated to his cave in the bedroom.
Such is life in the backwoods…

He’s been an indoor cat for two weeks now, and indoors actually inside the house with two dogs and two other cats for a week. Other than the current furry residents being suspicious of new guy, the only real problem so far is the dogs stealing food from his bowl.
Doorframe knew what a litterbox was right away, and for that I breathed a huge sigh of relief.

42 FemNaziBitch  Jun 27, 2014 4:30:58pm

One reason many Date-Rape Victims do not report or submit to a Drug-Facilitated Sexual Assault Test —urine test—is that they are afraid of what will show in the tox report. They are afraid they will be arrested or otherwise get a black mark in their medical and perhaps employment records if it shows anything other than the well known date rape drugs.

While, IIRC, most states have protections for prosecution to those who submit evidence, the defense attorney will work very hard to disqualify the case because the victim was on drugs.

Remember please, that many legitimately prescribed psych meds are also often used as date rape drugs.

So, along with the stigma of Sexual Assault, a possible victim is concerned about the stigma of Mental Illness being part of their future.

Seems victims have a good reason to be concerned.

I slipping this is as On-Topic because of the fine line between paranoia and legitimate concern over NSA spying.

A very good paper on this is here.

Interesting. Iran 44, Lebanon 46, and Israel/West Bank 67 are all the same color and only about 20 points apart from each other. That must be somewhat unnerving for the Israelis what with Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan being a mess.

The next most stable color includes Turkmenistan 74, Tunisia 78, Russia 85, India 81, Jordan 83, Morocco 92, Turkey 93, and Saudi Arabia 96. I wouldn’t have guessed Saudi Arabia would be considered more stable than India or Russia.

Teleskiguy will appreciate this, I’m sure.

You know how you get to know a band’s signature sound sometimes. The Grateful Dead are like that for me. I can catch two or three notes in the middle of a jam and I just know it’s them before I hear enough to make out the melody. Well, this morning I’m driving to work and the news is boring the living fuck out of me, so I switch to Jam_On on Sirius - and they’re in the middle of a drum solo - I listen to the drums for a few minutes and know it’s not the Dead - they do have two drummers (it’s hard to go wrong with two drummers) but the solo was more rock-and-rollish, and then I hear one electric guitar note - kind of a low G with a little bit of reverb and distortion, and before the next note comes I’m saying to myself, that’s Umphrey’s McGee. Sure as shit, it was, even though it was another 10 minutes before their lead singer stepped up to a mic and I had no clue what song it was (I’ve ony seen them five or six times, and don’t actually collect their music). Still, signature sounds. Gotta fuckin’ love ‘em.

Shake-up of U.S.-backed Syrian rebel group ordered

As the Obama administration seeks $500 million in additional aid for Syrian rebels, a leading figure of the major U.S.-backed Syrian opposition coalition has ordered the disbanding and complete restructuring of the group’s military wing.

The recently appointed opposition military chief, Brig. Gen. Abdullah Bashir, was fired in the overhaul.

The move was meant in part to put the military campaign directly in the hands of Syria-based commanders, Tomeh said Friday in an interview with Al Arabiya, the Saudi-owned news channel.

That didn’t last long

Decision to Sack Syria Rebel Command Reversed

The government in exile said it was also sacking FSA chief of staff Brigadier General Abdelilah al-Bashir.

It called on “revolutionary forces on the ground” to set up within a month a new defence council and fully restructure the rebel army’s command.

But hours later, the Syrian National Coalition led by Ahmad Jarba said in a statement the “head of the interim government has exceeded his powers”.

It said it had decided to “instruct the General Council to comment on this abuse of power at its next meeting and to take the appropriate action”.

So I’ve been at a hotel all week while my apartment has work done, the original proposal I signed off on said I could home the evening of Thursday the 26th. The building manager called me frantically on Thursday morning, telling me they need another day to finish the bulk of it, then just a few finishing touches on Monday morning, I can come home Friday evening.

I went home just before dinner today, thinking it’ll be beautiful and I can check out of the hotel Sat morning and go home. Hah!! The place was most absolutely a work in progress. They’re going to need another whole day to finish, at a minimum, and of course they’re not working over the weekend… so I’m back at the hotel now until Tuesday.

12 days at a hotel, for a total cost equivalent to four months maintenance fees. It’s a nice hotel, as hotels go, but. It doesn’t have all my cable channels, so I’ll be buying a few episodes on iTunes to catch up… and the bathtub is tiny, I can’t have an enjoyable hot soak here. The kitchenette is teeny, a bottle of soda can’t even stand upright in the fridge. The microwave I’m guessing settings, getting it wrong and ruining my meals. And I didn’t bring enough underwear, since I was sure I’d be home by now.

On the plus side, it’s closer to the gym, so I’ve been better about going, and they do a lovely continental breakfast in a very comfortable dining room.

Am I supposed to tip the maid every day, or only at the end of my stay?

It could be worse. You could have a prostate gland, for example.

The intelligent design crowd is mostly middle age or older men. That their own experience does not refute their intelligent design nonsense is simply amazing.

Hopefully you’ll see this: I’ve seen it recommended that you try to do it every day or at least spread out somewhat, because there’s probably two maids who deal with the room and that way it doesn’t all go to whoever’s working that one day.

You understand the concept of amassing data for logging to be queried at a later date, right?

Later date? I was under the impression that the point of hoarding everybody’s metadata was to be able to stop realtime threats to the US’ national security? Or at least that’s the publicity the project got even down here

You’re more likely to get frisked by a cop in Brooklyn than for the NSA to give two damns what you’re doing online. Yes, once again proving that Greenwald is the boy who cried wolf.

As for the “family emergency”, like everyone else, I highly doubt a dude-bro money bags like Pierre Omidyar would let his show pony Greenwald talk at a conference of anti-corporate Commie whack jobs. He wants his new media venture in the same venue as Reason, the Nation & Mother Jones not In these Times or info Wars.

So, the Hard Left crazy den mother, Amy Goodman, served as pinch hitter.
