Misleading AP Headline of the Day: “No Link to Russian Gov’t in Plane Downing”

Contradicted by the story
World • Views: 26,143

A wave of WTFs went through Twitter this afternoon when the Associated Press tweeted this:

Because of course, the BUK surface-to-air missile was supplied by Russia, the people who used it had to have been trained by Russia, and Russia’s links to the separatists are very well known and thoroughly documented.

A few minutes later the actual AP story was posted, and lo and behold… the headline didn’t tell the full story. In fact, it almost seems designed to mislead: US: No Link to Russian Gov’t in Plane Downing.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Senior U.S. intelligence officials said Tuesday that Russia was responsible for “creating the conditions” that led to the shooting down of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, but they offered no evidence of direct Russian government involvement.

[…]

The plane was likely shot down by an SA-11 surface-to-air missile fired by Russian-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine, the intelligence officials said, citing intercepts, satellite photos and social media postings by separatists, some of which have been authenticated by U.S. experts.

But the officials said they did not know who fired the missile or whether any Russian operatives were present at the missile launch. They were not certain that the missile crew was trained in Russia, although they described a stepped-up campaign in recent weeks by Russia to arm and train the rebels, which they say has continued even after the downing of the commercial jetliner.

In terms of who fired the missile, “we don’t know a name, we don’t know a rank and we’re not even 100 percent sure of a nationality,” one official said, adding at another point, “There is not going to be a Perry Mason moment here.”

So what this really looks like is that some intelligence people were asked to give details about MH17, and carefully parsed their words to be as equivocal as possible. Basically, there’s no real news here at all — except the headline. And the headline is contradicted by the story.

But guess who jumped all over that headline within minutes?

Clearly, this is going to be a propaganda bonanza for the Kremlin.

UPDATE at 7/22/14 4:47:17 pm by Charles Johnson

The Associated Press has now changed the headline, presumably responding to criticisms like ours: US: Russia ‘Created the Conditions’ for Shoot-Down.

Right, so say I’ve got a neighbor who is really pissed at another. So I give this guy some money. I loan him a gun and i take him to the range to teach him not just how to shoot, but how to hunt down and shoot people.

Next thing ya know a murder happens, this guy goes gunning for someone and kills the guy standing next to him.

The police find all this out. Think I can just say “I’m not responsible” and use an un-named source to claim it for me?

Like I said before, Vladimir can hide the parts, steal all the evidence and plane parts he wants. But he can not un screw the virgin.

And before the cops arrive your neighbor brings all video evidence of the murder to your house, and you just happen to own Adobe After Effects.

The condensed version of the story posted by Huffpost is trimmed well enough to almost match the headline.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Senior U.S. intelligence officials say they have no evidence of direct Russian government involvement in the shooting down of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17.

They say the passenger jet was likely felled by an SA-11 surface-to-air missile fired by Russian-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine and that Russia “created the conditions” for the downing by arming the separatists.

The officials briefed reporters Tuesday under ground rules that their names not be used in discussing intelligence related to last week’s air disaster, which killed 298 people.

They said they didn’t know if any Russians were present at the missile launch, and they wouldn’t say that the missile crew was trained in Russia.

A senior official said the most likely explanation was the plane was shot down by mistake.

OT, but I’m sitting here minding my own business when I feel something land on my left arm; I look down and a big ol’ skeeter - much bigger than the local variety - is there. I swatted it and killed it, but damn….I’ve never seen one that big here.

The shot down “by mistake” story makes me crazy. It implies a kind of innocence. It was not an oops. They shot a plane down entirely deliberately. That’s what they were there to do. That it was the wrong plane just makes them highly trained fuck ups.

15 goddamnedfrank  Jul 22, 2014 3:34:27pm

In this case Russia is an accessory both before and after the fact. They supplied the weapon system responsible for the crime, and then helped hide it after the plane was shot down.

The Russian government and DNR have fulfilled every required element of a criminal conspiracy. They’re in agreement on the objective of annexing Ukrainian territory. The specific intent has been established - evidenced by Putin using the term “Novorossiya.” And the shootdown of multiple aircraft, including MH17 is an overt act in furtherance of the conspiracy. Russia has supplied armed personnel into the conflict zone, created this rebellion nearly out of whole cloth, and funded it. This is a mafia operation camouflaged as an insurgency.

16 lawhawk  Jul 22, 2014 3:34:55pm

The media sucks; the editors who let this nonsense go out suck; and all they’ve gone and done is hand Putin and Russia along with the separatists points that they never should have had.

Now, it will take days (or never) to debunk and unwind what damage the AP did here.

The only place online where Strelkov-Girkin writes personally is an antiquarian forum forum-antikvariat.ru

I’ve been looking through Girkin’s postings (he writes as “Kotych”), just because. Certainly, if there was anything incriminating there, it has been deleted (though I doubt he did write anything truly incriminating).

But one formulation caught my eye:

The situation with the plane, whose downing was the fault of the Ukrs (theirs - regardless of who really did it) has sharply decreased the perspectives of the Russian help [etc. etc. blah NATO executioners blah]

That doesn’t prove anything, but it did make me go hmm ;)

CHICAGO - Sen. Bob Kerrey smells an odor coming from the Republican and Democratic stands on entitlements.

“It’s one of the cruelest things we do, when we say, Republicans or Democrats, `Oh, we can wait and reform Social Security later,’ ” the Nebraska Democrat said.

Mr. Kerrey says that without reform, entitlements will claim 100 percent of the Treasury in 2012.

“This is not caused by liberals, not caused by conservatives, but by a simple demographic fact,” Mr. Kerrey warned at a meeting of the Democratic Leadership Council.

“We [will have] converted the federal government into an ATM machine.”

There’s an idea floating around DC to put the DNR on the list of terrorist organzations, which I personally think is a very good idea. This also opens the door to putting Russia itself on the list of State Sponsors of Terrorism, and that brings with it a whole host of exceedingly unpleasant financial consequences.

It’s been noted by others that owing to almost complete US hegemony over the international banking system, the US alone could all but cripple Russia’s economy - the Europeans don’t even have to worry about lifting a finger. If Russia ended up on the State Sponsors of Terrorism list, they could kiss their financial future goodbye, for all intents and purposes, and I doubt very highly that the EU’s banking system is going to look at Russian money with anything less than a highly jaundiced eye at that point.

The Europeans won’t want their banking system to become a target of US anti-terrorism laws.

That’s the AP’s characterization, by the way - the intelligence officials didn’t use those words.

Yah, and the AP headline, “US: NO LINK TO RUSSIAN GOV’T IN PLANE DOWNING” isn’t really factual, and the lede suggests otherwise: “Senior U.S. intelligence officials said Tuesday that Russia was responsible for “creating the conditions” that led to the shooting down of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, but they offered no evidence of direct Russian government involvement.” I think the US govt is not going to make any kind of accusations against Russia that it can’t back up at this point, and to make a blanket statement that Russia fired the missile without any evidence is not something they would do, at any rate. But it’s pretty common knowledge everywhere that Russia has provided training and support for separatists and more than likely provided weaponry and equipment.

I suppose one could stretch credulity even further and speculate that the separatists bought their equipment and materiel from some black marketeer. Which really would be stretching it.

And Forde’s supporters are insisting

It is a crime to be a white, Christian, conservative woman who loves your country if you’re caught in drug smuggler-loving Pima County.

A biased jury, composed of a majority of jurors with Hispanic last names, chosen without following the recommendations of an excellent jury consultant, saw its duty and did it. The most frustrating part of this was that the Committee for Justice for Shawna Forde knew from the very beginning that “the fix was in,” and Pima County’s agenda was to railroad Shawna Forde to death row, yet despite all our efforts, the railroad continued unabated, and the desired political result was achieved. One of the early goals was achieved easily: to keep a Minuteman in jail for as long as possible.

In America, accused murderers like Weather Underground terrorist Bill Ayers and Black Panther Huey Newton, as well as O. J. Simpson, have been acquitted in cases where there was far more evidence of guilt than there was in the Shawna Forde case. Newton and Simpson are black. Ayers is white but hates America. Forde is white and loves America. That makes her a viable scapegoat in today’s politically correct atmosphere.

This horrifying sequence was caught on film 70 years ago today:

22 July 1944: During an air attack on a Japanese seaplane base and barge landing at Kokas, Enga, Dutch New Guinea, a Douglas A-20G-25-DO Havoc light attack bomber, serial number 43-9432, was hit by anti-aircraft gunfire and crashed into the sea. The pilot, 1st Lieutenant James L. Knarr, on his 70th combat mission, and gunner Staff Sergeant Charles G. Reichley, on his 46th, were killed. The A-20, named Bevo, had been assigned to the 387th Bombardment Squadron, 312th Bombardment Group, based at the Hollandia Airfield Complex.

re: #20 Dr Lizardo

It also means shutting down the International Space Station…since we no longer have manned rockets and rely on Russian Soyuz craft to get to and from the ISI.

“We did pick up a launch, and so we were able to have the ability to track this specific launch,” the official told reporters Tuesday afternoon. The missile shot up nearly vertically from a location in eastern Ukraine determined to be in control of Russian-backed separatists, the official added, before striking the plane at an altitude of 33,000 feet, killing the plane’s 298 passengers and crew.”

In the 2012 debates, the President ridiculed Mitt Romney when he warned about Russia. Mr Obama made a wise crack about “the 1980s called and want their foreign policy back.”

But when you look around the world, Russia is in the middle of many hot spots, and never on the side of good. Whether it’s backing Syrian repression and mass murder against TENS OF THOUSANDS of fellow Arabs, or building reactors for Iran, or using Edward Snowden against us, or allowing their thugs in Ukraine to shoot down the plane last week. Where is Russia anything but a thorn in our side? Romney had a point.

Renaissance Avoided More Than $6 Billion Tax, Report Says

A Renaissance Technologies LLC hedge fund’s investors probably avoided more than $6 billion in U.S. income taxes over 14 years through transactions with Barclays Plc (BARC) and Deutsche Bank AG (DBK), a Senate committee said.

The hedge fund used contracts with the banks to establish the “fiction” that it wasn’t the owner of thousands of stocks traded each day, said Senator Carl Levin, a Michigan Democrat and chairman of the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations. The maneuver sought to transform profits from rapid trading into long-term capital gains taxed at a lower rate, he said.

“It meant enormous profit for both the banks and the hedge funds,” Levin told reporters yesterday in Washington. “Ordinary Americans had to shoulder a tax burden of billions of dollars, a burden that was shrugged off by those hedge funds.”

I don’t know all the bells and whistles available on a high end and larger format camera like a Leica, Hasselblad, or Mamiya, but I am wondering if someone has a feature where you could have a remote control and small monitor screen attached to a long connection like a USB connector and be able to use all the camera’s functions remotely…like focus and triggering the shot.

And if that isn’t made, it might not be long before it is.
