Why, exactly, did they feel the need to pull out a long gun after the subject was dead?

3 klys  Aug 15, 2014 12:56:12pm

From the tweets, the shooting happened at roughly 12:02-12:03. From the timeline from the PD, second officer arrived on scene at 12:04.

4 Targetpractice  Aug 15, 2014 12:56:22pm

More witnesses showing up every day, but still we’re supposed to accept the cop’s version of events as filtered through his superiors, as he’s already hauled ass out of town and his report is being withheld so as not to “influence witnesses.”

Yegods, what a clusterfuck.

Ayep. He turned around to surrender and the cop continued to shoot him until he lay on the ground bleeding to death. God help this cop if either autopsy shows the shots were not immediately fatal.

9 Gus  Aug 15, 2014 1:01:51pm

So 2 shots missed, then he fires 2 at his back, Brown turns around, and empties the remaining 5. Total of 9 rounds.

This whole Ferguson shooting is becoming one very sad statement. It is approaching the outrageous level. The you-can’t-write-this-shit state of real.

It’d be a great movie, a dark comedy of a fictitious little Missouri town where down-home, this-is-how-we-do-it policing is laughable and dangerous all at the same time. But, it is real.

The Feds should send in troops to surround the local police departments, put all the cops in jail until each and every one can be thoroughly interviewed about all they know. Make sure no records get outside or destroyed, etc. That department is an ugly mess. I bet there are other skeletons in some closets.

This is relevant in a roundabout way - witnesses to shootings routinely misremember the number of shots fired. I wouldn’t be surprised if Wilson emptied his gun, and this particular witness missed one or two reports, which is especially easy to do when they’re fired in succession.

One would hope that the prosecution’s counter-argument of “can you believe the shit the defense is pulling? —- they want to quibble over the exact number of shots fired and whether witnesses counted the shots accurately in a case of someone being gunned down by a cop for no reason” would have more weight with a jury.

However, who can say what kind of jury in MO would end up hearing any case against the cop.

Dooley seeks special prosecutor in Ferguson case

St. Louis County Executive Charlie Dooley will lead an effort to appoint a special prosecutor to handle the case involving an officer who shot unarmed teenager Michael Brown.

Dooley spoke with Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster today and asked the process to remove St. Louis County Prosecutor Bob McCulloch from the case. Tension has mounted over the county’s handling of the situation. McCulloch fought back on Thursday, criticizing a state effort that replaced county police handling protests in Ferguson.

“The county executive believes Bob McCulloch is biased and shouldn’t handle this case,” said Pat Washington, Dooley’s spokeswoman.

The process isn’t easy. Dooley doesn’t have the power to remove McCulloch. Washington said he must obtain signatures and petition a judge for the removal.

Big question for all of you-Do you think differently today than you did before this incident when you see a police car behind you or a cop on the street? ..snip.

Not at all. I was in highschool during the Birmingham riots, the Army during Watts, and college during Kent State.

What this has done is erase a lot of people’s illusion created by thousands of hours of polite Serve n’ Protectors as portrayed on Cops.

Quick OT question: I’m seeing more and more wingnuts on FB using a graphic as their avatar - yellow cross on a black background.

Anyone know the significance? TIA.

I only know about the Welsh flag of St. David. Do you have an example of the graphic you’re seeing?

I was just wondering, since I’ve seen it popping up all over among wingnuts.

re: #93 makeitstop

Maybe this has something to do with it.

The Christian Party (UK) has expressed a desire to change the current Flag of Wales to the St. David’s Cross to symbolise the Christian heritage of Wales.

en.wikipedia.org

More about the Christian Party (UK) here:

The party claims to use the talents of Christians in different callings to legislate against religious, spiritual, moral and social problems in society.

At the time of the Scottish election in 2007, the Scottish Christian Party produced a manifesto including the following:

a proposed referendum on the reinstitution of the death penalty for murder where there are at least two human witnesses.
legislation to ban abortion.
increased taxation on alcohol and tobacco.
initiatives to bring personal responsibility to bear upon “self-inflicted disease” (such as alcoholism).
zero tolerance on drug possession.
curfews for under-11s, with mandatory intervention of child protection agencies in relation to any child 10 years or younger who is found unaccompanied on the street after 9:00pm.
the reintroduction of the right of teachers to use corporal punishment in extreme circumstances.
greater observance of a weekly day of rest (Sunday).
limits around coastlines to preserve stocks of fish and sand eels.
promotion in schools of chastity before marriage.
re-instatement of Section 2A (also known as Section 28).
the re-introduction of corporate readings from the Bible in all Scottish state schools.
provision of Christian religious education on a mandatory basis, with no obligation to promote other faiths, regardless of the wishes of those being instructed or their parents. There currently exists a level of compulsory Christian observance in most British schools, so these policies are calling for this to be increased.
a science curriculum which should “reflect the evidence of creation/design” in the universe (see Creation-evolution controversy).
public health campaigns to discourage homosexuality alongside excessive drinking and the use of addictive substances, whilst maintaining “God loves and we should love” such individuals.
the restoration of the right for parents to smack their children (as with prayer, this right currently exists and the policy is a call for an increase).
“Mind Pollution Levy” on 18 certificate films, DVDs, CDs, video games and top-shelf magazines.
a re-establishment of the principle of the innocent party in a divorce being acknowledged in any divorce settlement.
discouragement of the practice of addressing women as “Ms.”.
opposition to the practice of altering birth certificates to reflect gender confirmation surgery.
replacing the standard of ‘beyond reasonable doubt’ with ‘evidence of two or three reliable witnesses’ in the criminal justice system.
that Mechanical Copyright Protection enjoyed by songwriters should be extended to featured recording artists and record producers.
a minimum royalty percentage (the level of which should be decided through consultation with the music industry) to be paid to featured recording artists and producers on exactly the same basis as is currently paid to songwriters.
increased restrictions on immigration.

I am white, but as mentioned, I grew up and have lived in mixed neighborhoods. I have always been suspect of police. Too many instances with friends and others of cops doing really dumb stuff.

Also, the Sheriff in our county was found criminal by a federal and state investigation, thrown out of office with several deputies for fraud, destroying/planting evidence, records manipulation, etc. THey almost got them for a muder/cover-up but didn’t have enough to make that stick.

The whole department was labeled as corrupt. That was back in the mid-70s. They had another run in back in the late 90s. So, where I grew up no one did or does trust the sheriff. And, I’ve known some police. They were all far from heroes.™

No. The local sheriff in the town I grew up in ended up in Club Fed for bribery, corruption, and racketeering, among other things. I’ve been on both sides of the Texas-Mexico border. I know first hand that cops can be corrupt, or on the take, or otherwise out for their own gain instead of upholding the law.

I see a cop, even here in Austin, and I just nod and say hello and keep going on my way. You never know if they’re going to be one of the good ones or if they’re just looking for an excuse to fuck shit up. Best not to find out.

Honestly, today when I saw a bigger than usual squad of sheriffs checking everyone going into the Red Line subway I felt a little inner flinch, an instinctive fraction of a second of concern.

Silly of me really. I’m a white guy and have nothing illegal on my person. Just another bland commuter.

Maybe I should poll this.

No real change for me in relation to a cop on the street. I’m a white man with no distressing (to authorities) habits like protesting etc., so that doesn’t really mean very much.

What has surprised me in this is that the Ferguson PD and St. Louis county PD are so lost in their own ideology that they think a massive paramilitary response to peaceful protests is a viable option. That troubles me, because it seems to suggest that RWNJ idiocy about the coming race wars is systematically infecting some police departments.

In my musician days (the mid 70’s), my band would drive back and forth from week-long gigs if we were within 90 miles of home (St. Paul, MN). It would be a regular occurence to get pulled over in one of the towns coming home no matter how hard I tried to get down under 30mph. I’m sure they pulled us over because there were four of us in our 20’s in a car at 2:00am. I never got a ticket; they’d just check us out, realize we weren’t drunk, and let us go (always with the line “I see you don’t have any tickets on your record, so…”). I doubt that it would have gone smoothly if we weren’t all white.

This town was in the area that Michele Bachmann eventually represented.

After I came out, I’d get hassled in this area for having a rainbow flag on my car, but the hassle always came from, ironically, cars full of boys in their twenties.

“I just think that it’s a shame,” he continued, “that in America today, that criminals are given the benefit of the doubt - especially black criminals because white criminals are not - but black criminals are given the benefit of the doubt and the police officers are the suspects. I don’t know what has happened to my country.”

When Malzberg sought to clarify that Peterson had, in fact, called Brown a “thug,” Peterson asserted that he had, saying that Trayvon Martin was also thug.

re: #157 ObserverArt

I was raised Irish Catholic female in the 50’s and 60’s so I grew up fearing everything. Catholic education kindergarten through college. I really don’t regret it, though. On balance, I received an excellent education (especially my high school in St. Paul, MN) and only had 2-3 nuns who were really wacko.

I have searing memories of watching television footage of the civil rights marches and the dogs and hoses and the outrage I felt then has not abated at all in the ensuing years. When the fire bomb in a Birmingham church killed those 4 little girls my mom told my dad not to get her a Christmas present but to instead donate the money to the rebuilding of the church.

My biggest concern now is how the mainstream media act as echo chamber for the racists by repeating their lies. While the broadcast media were never perfect, at least back in the early 60’s they did not lend any credence to the both sides blather of today regarding the civil rights movement. It was very what was happening, why it was happening, and who was to blame. Of course that changed in the mid to late 60’s with the rise of Black Panthers and other “militant” groups and some African American activists becoming involved in anti Vietnam protests and linking racism and poverty to American policy at home and overseas. That and the election of Richard Nixon and the Southern Strategy combined with the riots caused broadcast media to become more biased against African Americans. These are just my memories and impressions and may not be borne out by actual historical research.

Good grief. I did not intend to launch into a walk down Geezer Lane. Apologies.

My county (Manhattan) got 4 armored vehicles… which they might actually have legitimate use for. We are Manhattan, after all, there’s always the chance major terrorists will be tried in our local courthouse.

San Bernardino County (CA), where I used to live… got 4 helicopters, a plane, a mine-resistant vehicle, 114 assault rifles and 208 night vision pieces. I’m going to give them the benefit of doubt, that maybe the aircraft got turned over to the Fire Department, that the night vision pieces are for S&R in the copious wilderness, and the assault rifles are just less expensive than buying whatever other kinds of rifles they’d have gotten from not-from-the-Pentagon.

Considering that the entire Texas-Mexico border (with the exception of El Paso County) got nuthin’ according to the map. I think it is not the whole story either. Where there’s Border Patrol, they’re always showing up as backup, as they did in this case.

Border Patrol agents were also at the fire station, but an agency spokesman said the agents were there in a show of support and the Border Patrol was not involved in the case.

It is not uncommon for Border Patrol agents to show up to assist local law enforcement, if needed, in small towns outside El Paso.

After the veto, Perry said he could not give money to Lehmberg’s office because she had lost the public’s confidence after her arrest in April 2013. Lehmberg pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 45 days in jail. She served 21 days.

Texas Governor Rick Perry indicted by grand jury

By my recollection, the investigation was conducted buy a Republican DA from Williamson County, TX

At the center of the issue is a complaint about intimidation stemming from Perry’s threat to veto of $3.7 million in state funding to the Public Integrity Unit run by Lehmberg’s office. The threat came after she pleaded guilty to drunk driving and served a 45-day sentence; Perry called on her to step down but she refused to resign her position. Perry then vetoed the funding for the PIU.

actually… they will. Pilots a) love flying a whole lot, and b) need a certain number of hours to keep their license current. Free flight time will get qualified pilots lined up down the block; if they get enough money for dinner that’s a really nice bonus.

(it’s the mechanics who are expensive. and they have to do a thorough inspection and usually some minor repairs every 100 hours of flight time.)

actually… they will.

OK, ya got me on that. Totally true!

Guessing they would be something like a UH-1, operating cost > $835/hr. If somebody gets a Blackhawk, that’s about $2,500.

Or street beatdowns and executions by cops and vigilantes.

But you can bet your sweet bippy that Rick Perry is screaming “Justice!” right now, while on the phone with Tom DeLay’s lawyer.

Right wing radio freaking out over Perry.

Maybe if we tell the GOP that Michael Brown was a republican they’ll change their tune? Seems that there is no such thing as a guilty republican.

The citizens of Ferguson supposedly run their own town. Time for the Mayor to fire the police chief or for the citizens to vote in people who can populate the civil service in that town with people who f*cking get it.

Even if there was an attack, it cannot justify shooting someone who has their hands up and is separated from the officer by sufficient distance to allow the officer time to react to movement.

Perry better not be talking to a trial lawyer, republicans hate those but sure do seem to hire a bunch of them

Bippy’s a grand name. I apologize for any inference with that Texass slug.

I once had a cat named Murpy, or should I say he once had me.

So, is there an actual police report out on the shooting or is everything just coming from the chief of police?

No actual report out. What is known is what the witnesses have said to the media (at least 3 that I know have spoken publicly) and what the chief has said.

Shooting a fleeing suspect in the back at best over some Swisher Sweets, then continuing to shoot him when he turns around with his hands up.

re: #278 Boyo

Happy to oblige. Here’s a bit o’ trivia: My favorite Dylan song is Fourth Time Around, which has pretty much the same melody and plot as the previously written Norwegian Wood. The story goes that Zimmy thought it was funny, and perhaps was a mite upset, that Lennon had started writing Dylanesque songs and wanted to show him how it’s really done.

Can I cut and paste from Downstairs - about the video released?

re: #206 BeachDem

Going back to Jackson’s morning presser. According to what he said, here’s rough timeline (among other things, I want to know how the hell Wilson made it from Glenark to the scene in 1 minute—or am I missing something?)

11:48 Officer Wilson at sick call on Glenark
11:51 911 Call from a convenience store (Ferguson Market & Liquor, W. Florrisant)
11:52 Description of robbery suspect dispatched
? A different officer arrives at store
? Further description dispatched—says suspect walking toward Quik Trip
12:00 Officer Wilson leaves Glenark
12:01 Officer Wilson encounters Michael Brown on Canfield Dr.
12:04 Second officer arrives on scene
12:05 Supervisor dispatched to scene and other officers arrive
? Ambulance from Glenark call arrives at scene to “assess” Michael Brown

That’s not the timeline.
It’s - rather

11:48 Officer Wilson at sick call on Glenark
11:51 Paperwork dates the 911 Call from a convenience store (Ferguson Market & Liquor, W. Florrisant)
11:52 Description of robbery suspect dispatched. “Man-Supposed-To-Be-Brown” Enters the convenience store.
? A different officer arrives at store
? Further description dispatched—says suspect walking toward Quik Trip
11:54 Potentially, store owner says “Call the Police”
11:55 “Man-Supposed-To-Be-Brown” exits the convenience store.

St. Louis Post-Dispatch the paper he is quoting, not St. Louis Police Department.

Confused me too so I tweeted and he answered…

I take that back about 4th Time Around having pretty much the same plot. Dylan’s is infinitely more twisted. Raymond Chandler comes to mind:

I stood there and hummed
I tapped on her drum and asked her how come
And she buttoned her boot
And straightened her suit
Then she said, don’t get cute

re: #50 Kragar

Don’t own a gun, never have. When I was a kid(22) I had an Akita/Elkhound mix dog that grew old. In her old age she would attack any animal smaller than her if she wasn’t leashed. So, that’s that.

An acquaintance of a friend thought it might be a good idea to let her off of her rope one night(I was inside prepping dinner). Welp, the neighbor’s dog that roamed freely for months and would taunt her within feet of her rope became target number 1. She did her thing..

End of story, the dude who owned the unleashed dog threatened to shoot her with that very same gun. First I’d ever heard of it.

End of thread… again. Sigh.
