He’ll never accept that truth. But if I can make the “SCARY MUSLIM TERRORISTS!!1” a bit scarier (while staying within the truth), I can sometimes stop a wingnut from yerping about Benghazi.

You’re assuming rationality where there is none in evidence. More likely, he’ll scream “THEY SHOULD HAVE SENT THEM ANYWAY!,” even though had there actually been Spectre gunships able to respond and one was indeed shot down, the President would be held responsible for sending it knowing that there were SAMS floating around amongst the militias.

And I had almost forgotten, but I remembered and Jame’s has been following what is actually happening right now in Benghazi:

New offensive against Ansar al-Sharia in Libya unlikely to succeed without major reinforcements as risks to aviation increases

IHS highlights the international political and security events to watch over the period 17-24 October, and analyses their likely risk implications.

Watch for heavy fighting in Libya’s Benghazi as Operation Liberty forces attempt to regain control from Islamist militias. Elsewhere, in the week ahead the student protests in Hong Kong will continue, and there will be potentially violent protests in Mexico City and around Japanese embassies in Beijing and Seoul.

The problem with the hate right is that they never really go away, but just recycle themselves.

National Racists Online is throwing some love towards Richard North (not a new thing), who as usual is complaining about greenies.

Richard North’s son, years ago, used to post here as “acidtrash” and I confronted him on some things, and eventually he went stalker at one of the stalker blogs:

re: #64 freetoken

That is North’s thing. At one time (I haven’t checked lately) his son, who was registered here as “Acidtrash” (now banned), was doing some of the web work for him.

Acidtrash has since joined the stalker blog, where he engages in hate against iceweasel. Likely he learned his butthurt ways at his father’s knee.

My original point still stands: the son simply took after the father. Richard North and his UKIPer allies really are xenophobes (which is why NRO loves them so much) and cultural supremacists, and outfits like UKIP and NRO exist by tapping into the bed of hate and ugly that exists in the dregs of society.

For all their many syllables, those folk like North and NRO writers say very little but recycle the same bit of fear mongering about the other.

And North and his allies are still into the CLIMATE CHANGE IS A HOAX meme even after some of the denial machine has changed gears to IT’LL BE GOOD FOR US mode.

TweetDeck question: When I try to view Chuck C Johnson’s tweets, or try to set up a search column for them, it says he has no recent tweets. If I look on twitter.com, I can see them, even if I’m logged in, so I wouldn’t think it’s because he blocked me.

Anybody know?

EDIT: Nevermind, PEBKAC. I had him muted in TweetDeck.

That’s strange. Right now I can pull him up in a column no problem. But I tried to add a couple of his tweets to my own collection a few days ago and Tweetdeck denied me.

There’s a big genetics conference in town, and concurrent with that many press releases on research are being dumped into the news feeds. This one caught my eye:

Gene duplications associated with autism evolved recently in human history

[…]

Researchers at the University of Washington analyzed the genomes of 2,551 humans, 86 apes, one Neanderthal, and one Denisovan. They closely examined a region of human chromosome 16 known as 16p11.2, a region prone to genetic changes in which segments of DNA are deleted or duplicated, one of the most common genetic causes of autism, schizophrenia, and other conditions. The geneticists found that certain segments of DNA in this region are repeated a variable number of times in different people and may also be associated with disease.

[…]

“When we compared the genomes of apes and humans, we found that the humans had evolved complex structural changes at 16p11.2 associated with deletions and duplications that often result in autism. The findings suggest that these changes emerged relatively recently and are unique to humans,” explained study author Xander Nuttle, BS, BSE, a graduate student in the Department of Genome Sciences at the University of Washington School of Medicine.

While this genetic variation has likely made humans more vulnerable to disease, the scientists believe it also contributed to the formation of novel genes. One such gene is BOLA2, a gene thought to be important in cell reproduction. The researchers found that while apes, Neanderthals, and Denisovans had only two copies of BOLA2, all modern humans have between three and 14 copies, with an average of six. The team is currently studying the function of BOLA2 to understand the potential significance of additional copies for human evolution. […]

Everytime I come across these sort of studies involving our closest relatives I wonder what really goes on in the minds of creationists if/when they read the same research.

When it is so clear that we have variable number of copies of a region of a chromosome, and that we differ in said region from other close species by copy number, it is pretty clear that the current variation among the living population indicates the region of the chromosome is undergoing rapid change compared to the other species, but the genes in those regions are not different from the other species.

To deny that this is indeed evolution takes a special amount of blindness that supports my claim that creationism ought to be treated as a mental illness.

Pumpkin festival turns to mayhem in New Hampshire, leading to injuries, arrests, tear gas

Disturbances are continuing late into the night in Keene, New Hampshire, where an annual pumpkin festival erupted in mayhem and led to arrests and injuries.
Witnesses tell The Boston Globe (bit.ly ) police fired tear gas at hundreds of Keene State College students and others who had been throwing bottles, skateboards and rocks into the crowd. One witness blames heavy alcohol use at earlier parties.

Seems likely.
They must be out of their gourds but the police will soon squash the violence.

Rabble Rouser Ted slams Obama for failure to be a dictator.

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) on Sunday slammed President Obama for not instituting a travel ban on flights to and from West Africa.

During an interview on CNN’s “State of Union” show, Cruz said the “biggest mistake that continues to be made is that we continue to allow open commercial air flights.”

“We need to take a common-sense stand of suspending commercial air travel out of these countries,” Cruz said. “And for whatever reason*, the Obama White House doesn’t want to.”

The travel ban idea isn’t by itself a nutcase idea, even if its wrong. But its value as an idea was swiftly erased by its being taken up by lunatics.

I’d also add in the part about how racists use Ebola as an attack angle against black people. That has played a major role in the travel ban’s mutation into a nutcase idea. When Obama declined to impose one, some of the haters promptly accused him of wrongly favoring black people is his refusal.

Is this science or philosophy?

Here’s how it works.

The first thing to understand is that quantum particles - and all particles are quantum particles once you are as small as an atom - behave, in some ways, like waves as they travel around. The big question “Is it a wave or a particle?” was answered by quantum mechanics, and the answer was “No it’s a quantum.” Waves and particles are both concepts which work well in everyday life, and emerge from quantum mechanics as good approximations to how things really behave, but the reality at the atomic scale is neither one nor the other. Or in some ways, it is both.

Is it matter or is it energy—is that the question?

I was in Keene a few years ago. It’s your typical small New England town. Main Street, lovely shops, and a small local college. The biggest event there is the pumpkin festival. And for whatever reason, this year’s festival turned into a drunken barndance of douchebaggery? Rioting, lots of arrests and mayhem. All over a bunch of pumpkins - and lots of drunken people.

That’s a grade A definition of a riot.

Guess the Keene PD got their excuse to operate the Bearcat after all.

And the compare/contrast with Ferguson couldn’t be more stark. Protesting the death of an unarmed black man at the hands of a police department that racially profiles blacks (and the police is predominantly and overwhelmingly white and from out of town).

Protests were peaceful until police went heavy handed and detained/arrested peaceful protesters, violating civil rights (as a federal court ruled in finding the 5 second rule to be unconstitutional), etc.

The good news is that a mega-rich individual like Rauner (reported to be among the top 10,000 earners in the entire country…the 1% of the 1%) is not likely to be tempted to take a $200,000 bribe.

The bad news is that he could easily save himself and his friends MILLIONS of dollars by promoting the right tax policies.

Personally, there is no scenario imaginable where I would support LOWERING taxes for the highest net worth individuals in the state. As I seriously doubt Rauner and his friends agree with me, my choice on who to vote for is quite simple.

Hey Dark have you any legit examples where lowering taxes has actually increased revenue?

Seems in some of the states that buy in to that thinking they are actually losing revenue and it is crashing their budgets and state credit ratings, etc.

And then there is the other side of tax cuts like here in Ohio. It has decreased the state budget but is causing issues with local budgets and causing state agencies to increase fees.

I guess if it looks good politically it is good for the politician, but what about the reality that stuff costs what it costs and if you want roads, bridges, police and schools, it comes out in fees and increased city taxes and local sales taxes and the like.

Bottom line, the politician thinks he looks good but the voters still look at their piggy banks and say…wait a second, there is some BS getting deep around here.

So when you get significant pushback to your bullshit GOP positions, you resort to gun pr0n. {spit}

No, that was one of two stories I wanted to post before I left. Here’s the other, a final farewell to a brave man:

Thomas Eric Duncan was remembered Saturday as a big-hearted and compassionate man whose virtues may have led to his infection with Ebola in his native Liberia and subsequent death as the first victim of the disease in the United States.

Family and friends gathered at a small Southern Baptist church with a primarily Liberian flock near where Duncan’s mother and other family members live.

Duncan’s neighbors in Liberia believe he was infected by helping a pregnant woman who later died from Ebola. It was unclear if he knew about her diagnosis before traveling to the United States.

Duncan denied helping his Ebola-sickened neighbor, but it would be consistent with the caring nature he always showed, said his nephew Josephus Weeks of nearby Kannapolis.

Duncan left Ivory Coast and learned auto mechanics and welding at a United Nations school for refugees in Ghana, relatives said.

He came to the United States hoping to work multiple jobs, save money and build a future, said his relative, Harry Korkoya of Woodbridge, Virginia.

Duncan is also survived by four children, none of whom could attend the memorial service, Weeks said.

Even a case where lowering their taxes would increase tax revenues?

But that entire line of reasoning is predicated on the Laffer Curve model of economics. Since then taxes have been aggressively cut multiple times and effective tax rates are now at their lowest point since WWII.

Even if you believe in Laffer’s theory 100% the fact remains that we are already on the wrong side of the curve now. Taxes are already well below the level at which he postulated cuts to them could increase revenue income.

The leaders of the movements who are advocating further cuts conveniently ignore this. Probably because their goal is not increased revenue or a healthy economy, it is to decrease their own personal taxes at the expense of the country as a whole.

How rare is an albino deer? In a December 2013 report published by USA Today, Wisconsin naturalist John Bates, co-author of “White Deer: Ghosts of the Forest,” said albino deer are born once in about 20,000 births. Some biologists claim only one in 100,000 deer is born albino, the report said.

Not so much the eating as the prepping that is dangerous. Unless you are wearing full protective gear when you are gutting and skinning it, I have to assume it would be pretty transmissible.

Given how corrupt Illinois is, Bruce Rauner is just what we need: He’s rich enough that he won’t be tempted by 6-figure bribes and he has good relations with Mayor Emmanuel without being part of the Chicago Machine.

Politicians take bribes not because they aren’t “rich enough,” but because they’re dishonest and unethical. What a weird argument for electing super-rich Republicans.

Very wealthy people are actually more likely to be dishonest and unethical than hard-working non-wealthy people.

Personally, hearing the words “born again” strikes me as somebody who’s looking for a crutch, some way to make up for poor life choices. I’d have more respect for someone who doesn’t believe in God, as at least they don’t tell me about how the stupid shit done in their past was before they “found God.”

Not popular in Japan…

Fisheries To Cut Catch Of Endangered Bluefin Tuna

The Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission announced the decision Thursday after meeting in Fukuoka, a city in western Japan. It said the catch should be cut to half of its average level in 2002-2004.

The commission, a grouping of more than 20 nations that monitors the western two-thirds of the Pacific, also endorsed catch limits for adult bluefin and set a 10-year target of rebuilding the population to 8 percent of its original size.

Even at roughly $660 per Lb. we are still over-fishing what is left of the species. :(

That’s the really scary point, they are working to get it back up to 8% of the original stock. I’m not sure at what point a fishery collapses, and is no longer capable of maintaining itself, but damn, tuna has got to be getting close.

Yeah, the former is the logical conclusion of hinging the answer to gun violence on mental illness, you eventually have to acknowledge that either you need a very broad definition of mental illness or you run into the reality that the majority of the mentally ill don’t engage in violence.

And the latter is the nature of the beast, with the number of gun licenses and gun purchases in any given year, going through every single one and giving them a detailed psych eval simply would cost more money than any sane government is willing to spend.

They are also inviting a backlash and ridicule by the gun lobby (although probably too late to worry now) by excessive additions to the list. Not only is it bad in public perception in a…
“look at all the non-criminals being banned from owning guns!”
“people having their guns taken for thought crimes!”
…kinda way. It also invites legal action against a common sense measure intended to prevent deranged and dangerous people from legally acquiring or possessing firearms.

If they can’t find a way to winnow the list further than they are it will be struck down by the courts.

re: #182 ObserverArt

Hey Dark have you any legit examples where lowering taxes has actually increased revenue?

Back in the days of national markets and limited mobility of capital, there was some basis to an argument that cutting taxes might lead to increased domestic investment and job creation.

Capital tends to follow the rate of highest return, and if that involves investing in some overseas operation without those pesky taxes, health, safety and environmental regulations that cut into overhead, then that is where the money will wind up.
