I’ve actually started uploading images to the Image Library just to have an easy way to find them later. I always give images some tags right after uploading, to make it easy to find stuff later with the search function.

I like Bruno. He did a great Super Bowl show.

I had read a little while back that Bruno Mars was what Michael Jackson was before all of his bleaching. Tried to find the quote and got buried in articles about Bruno Mars being the new Michael Jackson, especially regarding this song.

re: #8 Belafon

Bruno Mars is an old school all round entertainer/showman. I saw a clip of him from an MTV Awards Show. He was accompanied by a band and back up singers/dancers and it was phenomenal. He reminds me of Bobby Darin in that he can perform many different styles of music and Sammy Davis Jr because he sings, dances, and plays instruments. I read that his father was in a Las Vegas show band, which might explain Mars’ showmanship.

I don’t have any twibbons, but I do have all those articles I posted on the actual situation in Libya. I also provided some good explanations both on this blog and in real life as to why the BENGHAZI!1 conspriacy theories were wrong.

So instead of a twibbon, could you hook me up with the #Gruber botton that has a picture of Bruce Willis with a submachinegun and has the words “Yippe Ki Yay, Mother*$^%” printed on it?

Love this, been posting it on my FB since I heard it last week on the radio.

It reminded me of that old school 80s sound of Morris Day and the Time, Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis and that whole Minnesota sound with Prince et al. I think it’s the horn riffs that reminds me of it.

Also seeing the video, I think it’s an homage to all of those groups with a little bit of James Brown thrown in (check out the hair rollers in beauty shop). In fact during many of Mars LIVE performances, he does a James Brown “tribute” type segment.

Oh and just an FYI. Ronson and Mars will be on SNL tonight as the musical guest. It’s Ronson’s album, so the 2nd performance will be a 2nd song from his upcoming album. From what I hear, it involves a special guess (maybe Stevie Wonder, since I believe Stevie contributed to Ronson’s new album). It will be the first time in a long time that I actually watched SNL

Morris Day and the Time are on my bucket list of concerts I want to see.

Although, they are still touring, they are no longer touring as MD&T. The tour now as “The Original 7ven”

We can’t win for losing here in the Colorado River basin. We need rain fifty miles west of town, not *in* town. So, sucks to be us. Sucks even worse to be a rice farmer down river. No water for them again this year. I think that’s three in a row. Maybe they should plant grain sorghum.

There were so many outstanding funk/r&b groups in what I call the I-75 corridor from Cincinnati to Dayton during the 70’s/80’s. Besides these bands, there were the isley Brothers, The Whispers, Baby Face, and a few other groups I saw featured on Unsung on TVOne. And of course James Brown recorded at King Records in Cincinnati, and his band featured Bootsy Collins.

Loving each and every one of these stories:

51 psddluva4evah  Nov 22, 2014 6:40:19pm

So Hallmark Channel has been showing back to back Christimas movies since the end of October. My FB friends and I have been lamenting the lost of our nightly Golden Girls viewings. Hallmark used to show them every night in a 2 hour block (followed by Frasier). So last night, LogoTV changed their weekend lineup at the last minute to Golden Girls (I’m sure some saavy media person noticed no GG).

So last night I tweeted to @LogoTV:

“Golden Girls on @LogoTV . Suck it Hallmark Channel Christmas movie marathon!”

. LogoTV retweeted and favorited it.

Well later that night round bout midnight, I got a response tweet from “Hallmark Channel Senior Vice President, Network Program Publicity & Social Content, Hallmark Channel & Hallmark Movies & Mysteries”. She tweeted back to me:

So I can take this in two ways, in the holiday spirit, I can let it go and laugh it off (which is what I’m gonna do), or I could have clapped back to her that it’s TOO DAMN EARLY to be celebrating Christimas and just cause I ain’t celebrating Christimas in early November don’t mean nothing.

So how would you all have taken her tweet?

17-Year-Old Allegedly Posed as Sixth Grader To Find Child Porn Victims

Two men have been arrested on charges of possession of child pornography after posing as father and son, and allegedly targeting elementary school students to recruit as child pornography victims. This is all just horrible.

17-year-old Ricardo Javid Lugo was posing as a sixth grader for roughly three months, after 28-year-old Randy Ray Wesson, pretending to be Lugo’s father, forged documents (birth certificate, immunization records, and proof of residency) and enrolled Lugo at Hurst Hills Elementary. Lugo was in school using the name Matthew Drew Wesson basically on behalf of Wesson to “recruit potential victims” for child pornography.

There are some dispute whether it was the first, but certainly it was the first on a major network TV show. Some Southern TV stations pulled the episode, fearing a public backlash.

There’s a funny story about how Shatner and Nichols conspired to make sure the take of them actually kissing on camera was the only usable take of the scene. For all the others, Shatner made a goofy face at the critical moment.

Can’t remember which book it was I read, but it related the history behind that kiss and the fear amongst network execs that it would cause a firestorm of controversy. They actually considered going with an alternate scenario of Spock being the one forced into the kiss, figuring it would go over better with a white audience if it was an alien who kissed a black woman. Turned out that the controversy they feared never manifested.

75 KerFuFFler  Nov 22, 2014 8:04:19pm

That video just reminded me of a story of my sister’s. She worked as a hair stylist in Dallas and one of her gay co-workers shared this vignette. His live-in boyfriend, out of the blue, got a surprise, early a.m. “visit” on his doorstep from a breakfast-bearing, female co-worker of his who had a crush on him and did not know he was gay. She apparently thought that showing up, unannounced, first thing in the morning on his doorstep with coffee and muffins would lead to other things….

The crushee was too embarrassed to come to the door, so the boyfriend, in his bathrobe, had to confront the wench and tell her that her love-interest was gay and bespoken. Her jaw dropped and she fled. My sister’s friend was annoyed that his boyfriend was too cowardly to confront her himself at the door. After much arguing and sulking he added that he was really pissed because, “That bitch saw me in my curlers!”

The salon seized upon the actionable revelation; he had always maintained that his curls were natural!

It’s part of Trek lore. The network’s censors overreacted, as usual. It’s to Shatner and Nichols’ credit that they forced the issue on the big wigs.

Now that I think of it, I wonder if the Uhura-Spock romance in the Star Trek reboot isn’t an allusion to the proposed Uhura-Spock kiss you mention.

In other randomness, I came across a blog post earlier analyzing whether the new Hunger Games movie was either a clear endorsement of or clear condemnation of, the Tea Party/wingnut movement.

You see, some are looking at the film and viewing President Snow and the fat cats of the Capital as the perfect analogy for Obama and his cronies and the brave revolutionaries as analogous to everyone’s favorite Gadsden flag waving crowd.

But let’s think about this: You have a diverse group of young people rising up against environmental recklessness, income inequality and horrible quality of life, all engineered by a rich white guy and his equally rich close circle of powerful people, also mostly white.

Obviously I don’t think the movie is specifically targeted to either, but I think it’s pretty clear which side it mirrors more.

Here are more details about the kid shot by police:

CLEVELAND (AP) — Police say a 12-year-old boy brandishing what turned out to be a fake gun at a Cleveland recreation center was shot and wounded by a responding officer.

Cleveland’s Emergency Medical Service tells WOIO-TV (bit.ly ) that the boy is at a hospital with serious injuries. His mother says he’s in surgery for a stomach wound.

The shooting happened at about 3:30 p.m. at Cudell Rec Center after officers responded to reports of a male with a gun.

Deputy Chief Ed Tomba tells the TV station the boy had the weapon in his waistband, pulled it out and one officer fired two shots. He says the boy didn’t make any verbal threats or point the gun.

WOIO reports the gun was a replica of semi-automatic pistol, and the orange safety indicator in the muzzle was missing.

Great idea, though Gawker probably pays even less than Macy’s. Not that I’m complaining, much. It’s a gig. Funny thing is, last month I sold six very simple illustrations, doodles really, that took me a half hour to draw to a client for $350, and earned slightly more than half that amount working my dogs off for six days at Macy’s. But like I said, it’s a gig. And it might make for entertaining reading.

So now that there are consumer-level sous vide immersion circulators, I broke down and got me one. I couldn’t justify the $800+ price on any of the PolyScience ones (use them at work every day, and they are great), and the self-contained SousVide Supremes, while great, limit the amount you can cook at one time.

Hard boiled 2 dozen eggs this morning for egg salad and deviled eggs for a party coming up this week. They all came out perfect. But the best just happened now. Soft poached an egg and topped off my ramen. Geez. I’ve been doing it wrong all these years. Always hated poaching eggs in a pot of stirred water. Such a mess. Sous vide is pretty much failsafe.

Egg = sploosh!

Back in 1996 or ‘97, I saw an ad for holiday sales staff at Computer City, You know, teachers always need extra cash, so I figured I’d apply and see what happened. Got hired and made decent money on commissions — enough that I wondered whether working full-time would pay better than teaching. They kept me on after the holiday rush. Then CCity got bought up by CompUSA. My commission pay suffered, so I moved to SOHO at Circuit City where a former co-worker was working. Pay went back up.

I did not stay long enough to witness the eventual demise of Circuit, joining CompUSA and Computer City on the scrap heap of brick-and-mortar electronics shops. My former CompUSA workplace still stands empty after all these years.

I’m glad I stayed in teaching, in retrospect.

Online sales and the big department stores like Wal-mart and Best Buy killed all those brick-and-mortar places. All three of my former employers tried online sales, but it was too little, too late. Margins on computers were razor-thin, and selling service contracts — the real money-makers — were a tough sell. Plus their customer service was spotty at best. So, I wasn’t too surprised when one-by-one Computer City, CompUSA and Circuit City went belly-up.

It’s not long for this world either. Pretty much all the credit ratings agencies have it at junk bond status or just above default, with best guesses right now saying they’ll be in bankruptcy before next October. Seems they only held on because they could afford to sell their junk at even lower prices than their competitors, but between the big boxes and internet sales, their days are numbered.

The producution values look amazing and I was especially impressed with how many established actors they’ve managed to get onboard. I love that Tony Todd is in it; he was the star of my all-time favorite Trek episode, DS9’s The Visitor.

Yep. Bootsy Collins’ Rubber Band. Lots of people don’t know The Godfather of Soul recorded in Cincinnati. Ohio had the funk going in that period.

Just did a Google on “Morris Day music influences” and found a site that listed: James Brown, Sly Stone, Parliament, Rick James, Commodores, Ohio Players, Solomon Burke…and of course his buddy Prince.

The Roots of Funk Run Deep. Owww!

Yup. Some people say rock and roll started in Cincinnati at King Records. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame put up a plaque at the old King Records site. The story of King is fascinating on so many levels.

So last night I tweeted to @LogoTV:

[Embedded content]

So I can take this in two ways, in the holiday spirit, I can let it go and laugh it off (which is what I’m gonna do), or I could have clapped back to her that it’s TOO DAMN EARLY to be celebrating Christimas and just cause I ain’t celebrating Christimas in early November don’t mean nothing.

So how would you all have taken her tweet?

Only 9 were born elsewhere: four (Butler, Fitzsimons, McHenry, and Paterson) in Ireland, two (Davie and Robert Morris) in England, two (Wilson and Witherspoon) in Scotland, and one (Hamilton) in the West Indies.

Her healthy eating campaign really gets them furious doesn’t it? Yet they’re the first ones complaining about having to care for other people’s health care. FLOTUS is trying to do what she can to make obesity less of a problem early in life and she should be applauded for that. Of course, she’s also an Obama so nothing she does is right to them. But yeah, I don’t recall anyone actually getting excited about school lunches and our pizza I remember was awful. If I’m going to eat untasty school food, let it at least be healthy.

For the record,

John Adams, b. 1735, Massachusetts bay colony
Ben Franklin, b. 1706, Massachusetts Bay Colony
Alexander Hamilton, b. ca 1755, British West Indies
John Jay, b. 1745, New York colony
Thomas Jefferson, b. 1743, Virginia colony frontier
James Madison, b. 1751, Virginia colony
George Washington, b. 1731 (OS), Virginia colony

USA, b. 1776, re-constituted 1789

The idiots don’t seem to recall that the drafters of the Constitution had to write this into the Constitution to get around the “natural born Citizen” part:

No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States.

Citizenship having been bestowed by the signing of the Declaration of Independence or the ratification of the Articles of Confederation, depending on how many hairs you want to split.

Technically speaking, anyone born on the American continents can be called an American, including the people who were here before the Europeans arrived. But you could not have been born a citizen of the USA before 1776, or 1789 as the case be.

My Catholic military school (24/7) had a nun who ran a great kitchen. We learned to appreciate that when she got sick and was replaced for a few weeks. From there it was 5 yrs in a seminary—different nuns cooking—and worse garbage than in any Army messhall.

I hate what Bill Cosby has done, to women, to black Americans (his sexual violence is going to trotted out by racists, you can be certain of it), and to America as a whole. Bill Cosby can go on being a funny old man that everyone loves who just also happens to have been a serial sexual predator for much of his adult life. The reason he’s scared is that it becomes his legacy - the sexual assault/abuse - not his career.

When the Cosby story first started to break, a lot of the usual suspects on the conservative side started the talking points that Cosby was being targeted by liberals since he was a conservative. The conservative label was applied based on one or two speeches he gave focusing on the black family in America.

Once it became clear from the number of accusations, the consistency of the pattern that it wasn’t a smear campaign against him their tube changed. Now he was a hard core liberal and what do you expect from a liberal except this type of behavior. It was so predictable to be laughable.

Speaking as a former long-time resident of Kentucky, I can vouch for that estimation of McConnell’s “popularity.” He has done good things for the corporate bosses in KY and elsewhere and gotten pork barrel projects, but not much for the average guy. He’s the not-Obama, the not-Democrat for most of the voters in KY.

Plus, KY voters have a long history of returning incumbents until they die in office, or until a Democrat holding office no longer holds water.

Well, I have some people here who would love to teach in America if they could get a visa.

Has the school considered hiring someone through the Confucius Institute Hanban program? That’s how my former school found its first Chinese teacher.

Stupid headline above this excellent paragraph

And simultaneously to all this there has been a consistent rise in voters who are fed up with both political parties and who are now calling themselves independent. Faster than the growth of Latino voters and the rise of the angry white male is a growing group of voters who are registering as something other than Republican or Democrat. In state after state, voters are opting out of casting ballots in primaries and are picking a third way to express themselves. For now, this has been heard in ways of a voice of consistent frustration or by voting each party out of office every two years, but at some point independent candidates will begin to find success. And then maybe this red/blue monopoly will be broken. One can hope, and also see it realistically coming.

Hallelujah

I will pass that information on to the principal.

Not so much. A few older Chinese men wear fedoras, and caps are popular among the college set, but most people here (other than farmers) go bareheaded. But there are plenty of stylin’ hats among entertainers, so the fashionable young men will sport them for special occasions.

I kinda wish they would come back in L.A. We have our cowboy hats but absent a horse, or at least a beat up pickup truck, meh.

Totalitarian mindset, as it were.

Quick question: I’ve got movie passes for a chain that’s no longer in my neck of the woods (National Amusements/Showcase), and I want to pass them on to anyone who wants them.

The theaters are located in NY, CT, MA, RI, North Jersey, and Ohio

Is there an instant message system or anything like that on the site? I’m fine with posting my email address but I don’t want to violate any site rules or privacy concerns.

I’ll pass them on to whoever raises their virtual hand first after this post.

I had completely forgotten that I had this football in his toy box.

If you go into your account settings, you can set your E-Mail address and then at the top of the message entry box, click show email. This turns your nick blue and anyone clicking on it can send you an E-Mail. Or so I understand.

Wait a minute. What was that about an officer allegedly receiving an injury?
In the story now relayed no injury is mentioned, no shooting from the BB gun either.

So very sad—another in a litany of shoot first, ask questions later never.

I’m still curious as to why the only person who has been quoted thus far in any of the stories I’ve read about this is from the police union, not department officials. It just seems so odd to me.

So, on Meet the Press this morning, Rudi Giuliani was sharing his vast wisdom about “black crime” and said “you people” to Michael Eric Dyson.

O_o

He hurt his ankle. Appears he stayed in the hospital overnight for that.

Demonstrating exactly the point Dyson was making at the time, that the police in black neighborhoods fail to carefully distinguish between criminals and the rest of the people.

Like I said, that’s the way I understand it’s SUPPOSED to work. Maybe Charles or another Lizard can explain it better than me. If I have to E-Mail someone here, I try to find them on Twitter and IM them there.

It’s a legitimate point that I imagine Rudy can’t stand hearing given what happened many times with his own PD during his mayorship in New York.

Seriously. Stop being the far right’s waterboy Boehner and actually bring the bill to the House. Oh I get it though, you’re afraid of losing your speakership more so than doing the right thing.

I hate what Bill Cosby has done, to women, to black Americans (his sexual violence is going to trotted out by racists, you can be certain of it), and to America as a whole. A man who claimed to use his gifts for good has been revealed as having used his good works to cover up a long list of crimes.

And I certainly don’t want to hear from any apologist who argues that his behavior was pretty much standard for men, regardless of race, for his time.

Brian Elliott had a piece of equipment break and WHY WOULD ANYONE EVER BE A GOALIE

I was a goalie because I could not skate well enough or afford hockey skates, all I had were figure skates. But I did have access to a baseball catcher’s equipment from the little league team my brother managed.
