Paris Mayor Will Sue Fox News Over “Insulting” No-Go Zone Story

You go, Paris mayor

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour today that she plans to sue Fox News for defaming Paris with their false claims about “no-go zones.” (Claims that were then repeated in Britain by Gov. Bobby Jindal.)

Paris, suing Fox News. An idea whose time has come.

Fox News runs lies with impunity hour after hour day after day. I guess we here in the US are so used to it we just shrug our shoulders. How this lawsuit will play out in a US Court I don’t know. Freedom of the Press vs. Libel. It would seem to my layman ears to be a weak case to actually get a decision in France’s favor, however if tried inside France all bets are off. What remedy can France seek if convicted in France? Murdoch or Ailes personally $$$ liable if he steps foot in France?

My fear of bridges used to embarrass me and I fought it. Now, it appears to be very real.

When I heard there was a bridge collapse in Cincinnati this morning I thought “Oh no…not the 1-75 bridge over the Ohio River!”

Luckily it was not. But some day it might and it will be a huge disaster that will not have not had to happen. But here we are America.

Here is an article from the The Cincinnati Enquirer up on the cincinnati.com web site. Not sure when it was written.

Brent Spence Bridge obsolete, dangerous

The travel lanes are too narrow, and the merge lanes are too short. The signs are too hard to see, and the on- and off-ramps are too close together.

There’s no room at all to stop in emergencies. Speeds vary wildly. And traffic? Daily use by cars and trucks long ago surpassed maximum design limits.

This is the Brent Spence Bridge - one of the most hazardous bridges in the nation, The Enquirer has found. Forty years after it opened, the bridge today is too crowded, too cramped, too confusing - and far too complicated for any easy fix.

-cut-

Sure would be nice if we could fix this country up…and think of all the jobs created. But no…we need oil pipelines first.

re: #33 ObserverArt

The Brent Spence Bridge is a major disaster just waiting to happen. Vehicles are already being clobbered by chunks of concrete falling from the decks.

The thing last night with the overpass collapse (it was actually a ramp from Hopple Street to I-75) was a construction accident. They were getting ready to demolish it and the structure was weaker than anticipated, so fell down not according to best laid plans. But at least it had long been closed to traffic or it could have been so much worse.

Quite so, Cevallos. Quite so.

Now to be fair to the guy, in the very next breath he did correct himself and acknowledge the minor difference in constitutions between the US and foreign parts, which (lordy) don’t have a First Amendment By Which All Must Live and Die, but this still shows (I think) the unbending way in which a lot of Americans think about the Freedom of the Speech.

And FOX News supporters will have the built-in hatred for the ‘too-liberal, war-chicken’ French to use as an excuse for why they are trying to sue.

I think Fox could probably argue successfully that France doesn’t have jurisdiction over a case like this, but who knows?

I know almost nothing about French law, but I suspect that if a French court were to rule against them there’s a possibility it could affect their ability to broadcast in France.

FOX International Channels (FIC), which broadcasts in France, is a subsidiary of Fox Entertainment Group, which belongs to 21st Century Fox:

Twenty-First Century Fox (spelled as 21st Century Fox) is an American multinational mass media corporation. It is one of two companies created from the 2013 split of News Corporation (as founded by Rupert Murdoch in 1979); 21st Century Fox retains the previous News Corporation’s broadcasting and film assets and serves as its legal successor, while its publishing assets were spun off to form News Corp at the same time. The split was designed to ensure that both companies are operated under more “focused” management, which Murdoch claimed would “unlock” their true value.

Among its holdings are Fox Entertainment Group—owners of the 20th Century Fox film studio and Fox television network among other assets, and pan-Asian pay channel operator STAR TV. […]

According to a press release from the House Republicans, Curbelo will not be sharing his own thoughts and words with the public. Instead, he will only be reading a Spanish translation of Ernst’s speech.

But will he have a wee bottle of water close to hand?

N.J. transportation chief orders immediate review of state’s bridges

northjersey.com

My fear of bridges used to embarrass me and I fought it. Now, it appears to be very real.

It’s a game of chicken to see who blinks first - the governor and his presidential ambitions, or state officials who want to secure funding for road and bridge projects around the state.

My guess is that NJ will do some kind of tradeoff - reduce the estate tax in exchange for higher motor fuel taxes or imposing sales tax on motor fuel sales or something along those lines. Precisely the wrong approach, since it’s the billionaires who can most afford the tax, and the motor fuel tax is highly regressive.

BTW, I think you all have heard the number 55 with regard to the number of “shariah no-go zones” in Sweden.
Ever wonder the number 55 came from?
A report from the National Police Intelligence Division (not to be confused with RPS/Säk (Swedish Security Service)).
Does not mention Sharia laws or Islamic fundamentalism, however it does mention criminal networks and gangs.
Now, what is it when a news organization claims that the information they have, one of the sources being this report, support the notion that there are 55 no-go zones, when it clearly does not?
Is it libel or is it something else?

Oh, how did I get it? A wingnut tried “Dis dokumint sez there are 55 mooslem no-go zons in Sveeden!”… So I clicked the link and read it.
I betcha he found it in the Source and Reference section of the RWNJ “Status Report” which convinced him there are no-go zones in Europe.

Considering the discussion of the movie version of “American Sniper” that has been going on off and on, I thought I’d post this link. The author discusses the truth, and lack there of, in the book. The conclusion is, I think, an appropriate epitath to our sniper’s life:

The fans of Chris Kyle say he is an American Hero. They say he is the embodiment of all that is good about this country. I actually slightly disagree with that. I think Chris Kyle is not the perfect American, but rather the perfect embodiment of America. He was brave, yet a bully. He was selfless, yet selfish. He was humble, yet a braggart. He was brilliant, yet dense. He was a bullshitter, yet sincere. He was heroic, yet cowardly. He was the perfect embodiment of America in all of its manic contradictions and hypocrisies. And as the court case has proven, Chris, in the true American fashion, was more interested in marketing himself than in telling the Truth.

When Eastwood delivered his bizarre chair-Obama speech at the 2012
Republican National Convention, he somehow got the audience to applaud his dovish criticism of the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan.

“I know you were against the war in Iraq, and that’s okay,” he said to invisiblechair-Obama. “But you thought the war in Afghanistan was okay. You thought that was something that was worth doing. We didn’t check with the Russians to see how they did there for the 10 years.”

The Oscar-winning filmmaker has described his own politics as a blend of Milton Friedman and the famously anti-war intellectual Noam Chomsky. He identifies as a libertarian, and supports gay marriage and believes climate change is a problem.

Well, getting dinner prepped for the week; making Indian “butter” chicken in the slow cooker. No butter involved, so it’s actually a perfectly kosher recipe.

I’ll tweak it a little for my own taste, which runs spicier than the Mrs. but the recipe as written is a very mild taste.

Since it’s just the two of us, I’ll have a bunch to freeze for future consumption.

Wow that looks awesome! Bookmarked.

I want to use my crock pot to make chili. The only chili I have done is a pureed ground beef sauce for hot dogs. But I want to make a brisket chili.

There are about a bazillion different recipes and I can’t make up my mind. Beans or no beans? Tomatoes or no tomatoes?

Suggestions? Anyone?

They’re collards, people, and they’re green (no root to eat, like turnips, in which case “turnip greens” would be correct).

Monkfish tail is sometimes illegally used and sold as scampi in the United Kingdom, contravening the Fish Labelling (Amendment) England Regulation 2005 and Schedule 1 of the Food Labelling Regulations 1996.

I’d say beans and tomatoes, and shredded brisket sounds yummy. But I keep thinking that the best way to do the brisket is first give it a good sear before slow cooking (no matter what recipe and what style you cook).
