With all respect to the President, I went to the Community College of Philadelphia to take my nursing school prereqs, but I would have to tell you that an awful lot of my classmates were in over their heads, even in an eight grade algebra class.
It’s a complicated issue. I could not have afforded to go to nursing school without going to CCP first, but I can’t imagine how throwing open the doors is going to work out.

I saw some of that in the early 70s. They were offered “make up” classes they could take to try to bring them up to speed. Those who can’t keep up a 2.5 GPA will not be eligible under this plan.

I don’t know the economic backgrounds of my classmates. I don’t even pretend to do so. I am just relating my personal experience from two years of community college that a significant number of my classmates struggled with course material that was at a less than introductory level. Others took an aimless assortment of courses and eventually dropped out with no degree and having used a considerable amount of financial aid and loans. That’s the reason I expressed concern over the concept of making community college free.
I’m sure there are details that I don’t know about for this plan but who knows what the final version of it may turn out to be, especially after if has to go through a Republican Congress.

Funny you should mention that. We have to take some medical dosages tests (simple stuff, really), but it just ties some of my classmates in knots. The pasing grade used to be 90% until somebody realized what a bad idea it was to have your grads mess up 10% of their meds

Funny you should mention that. We have to take some medical dosages tests (simple stuff, really), but it just ties some of my classmates in knots. The pasing grade used to be 90% until somebody realized what a bad idea it was to have your grads mess up 10% of their meds

So, the problem is not at CCs, it’s at the lower school levels.
High school graduates need to have adequate education.

I didn’t say what you think I did. I never said it was a bad idea, I said it was a complicated issue. I argued that some people aren’t cut out for CC. That’s as far as I went. This year’s SOTU was short on specifics and policies, but long on the troll. It was a civics lesson for the GOP reminding them that he’s still POTUS for 2 more years and that he’s not going to let them off the hook. He’s going to hold them accountable for their malfeasance and misdeeds - and failure to act on a wide range of issues all while focusing entirely on repealing health insurance for millions of people who previously were unable to obtain it.

The GOP keeps looking behind; the President by his very oath must look ahead (protect/defend the nation).

I don’t know the economic backgrounds of my classmates. I don’t even pretend to do so. I am just relating my personal experience from two years of community college that a significant number of my classmates struggled with course material that was at a less than introductory level. Others took an aimless assortment of courses and eventually dropped out with no degree and having used a considerable amount of financial aid and loans. That’s the reason I expressed concern over the concept of making community college free.
I’m sure there are details that I don’t know about for this plan but who knows what the final version of it may turn out to be, especially after if has to go through a Republican Congress.

As a possible explanation, we could imagine many of those struggling classmates also had to work full-time to pay for those classes, and so were too tired in class to pay close attention.

I’ve never taught CC, so take my words under advisement. Many CC students are people who did poorly in high school, for a variety of reasons, and need remediation before they can take regular college classes. So, it falls upon CCs and the teaching staff to become high schools and HS teachers. Some teachers relish this opportunity to help their students. Others resent it, because they signed on to be college teachers, not HS teachers. So, you can predict what might happen if a poorly prepared student, who is also tired from working his way through college, gets a teacher who’d rather do anything else than teach 8th grade algebra to college students.

That being said, I think most CCs realize their role now includes remediation for poorly prepared students and have embraced it as part of their mission. We can argue till we’re blue in the face who’s at fault for that poor preparation, but the fact of the matter is, American high schools do not educate all their students well enough to make it in the job market. For a lot of them, a GED and CC are the only paths to a college degree and maybe a decent income. Enabling more students to follow that path seems like a no-brainer, for a variety of social, political and economic reasons.

It makes me sad that some of my fellow citizens think that because I am a woman, I don’t deserve access to health care or the right to make decisions about my own body. Or equal pay for equal work.

It makes me sad that some of my fellow citizens think it is okay to deny some of my friends the right to marry the person they choose.

It makes me sad that some of my fellow citizens think that putting obstacles in front of the voting booth - and having those obstacles disproportionately impact minority and low-income voters - is a good thing.

It makes me sad that some of my fellow citizens think ignoring science makes it go away.

And that people want his speech forgotten by tomorrow noon is sad too, because it means they think what he said was unimportant. Maybe if you’re living in the world where status quo is good for you and you don’t give a shit about anyone else, it is unimportant. But I do give a shit about my fellow citizens, even the ones who don’t give a shit about me, and what he said is important.

And it was nice to have a speech that acknowledge those things.

I’ll leave you all with this… it’s from a sunset cruise I took during a family reunion in the Keys first part of last year. Camera was my Canon 60d, lens probably the 15-85, and 99% sure that it was shot in Aperture Priority. I’d have to find the original in Lightroom to check, but I’m pretty sure of it.

Enjoy… I have to make cat clothes from old bread wrappers.

My folks would take their shoes to a little shoe repair shop when I was little. I remember being fascinated with the Cat’s Paw logo.

True fact: my Swedish immigrant paternal GGF was a shoemaker in Moose Jaw around 1895-1910.

There are a couple of shoe repair places here in Clarksville, but mainly due to the Army post (Ft. Campbell). They also specialize in stripping the old leather and getting a spit shine laid down. (A skill I never mastered, but since I was in Army Aviation, as long as they were black I was ok)

It’s very early. Plenty can happen in the next two years. I pray they will.
But at the moment this frozen frame of time right now the signs point to disaster.
We need some more things to go wrong that Obama gets the blame for (as in 2013 and 2014) or we are looking to another 2012,
So far the Republicans as opponents just make me more depressed.
It looks like the standard 2010 to 2011 cycle (or 2012 to 2013) where the momentum and high ground is flipped in a short period .

One of the guys in my boot camp company showed the us the right of it. Slather on the shoe polish, heat with your Zippo until the stuff flowed then buff to a high luster. Took around ten minutes, total.
