I work in a ski shop in a Hyatt hotel. I’ve befriended a number of front-of-house Hyatt employees and they wear heels to work everyday, it’s expected of them by the all male management. I hear a lot of “my feet hurt” and “my back hurts” in conversation. Hell, just today I saw one of the HR gals walking down the hallway in heels. “Do you have to wear those damned heels?” I asked. “Uh, yeah, kind of,” she said.

In the”I’ll never live it down” department - we were on vacation in New Orleans, and were heading out to the Garden District one morning. I mentioned that the sidewalks out that way were a total mess and that maybe she should wear sneakers. She humored me and put her sneakers on.
We got out to the Garden District, and my wife got off the streetcar, took two steps and turned her ankle. I haven’t made a suggestion regarding footwear since.

An excerpt from George Carlin’s book “When Will Jesus Bring The Pork Chops?”
And, my friend, I hope you’re aware that when we talk about women looking good, we’re also talking about clothing. Clothing is what generates all this shopping shit that occupies so much of a woman’s time. Because the truth is, women have to buy, own and wear and unbelievably bewildering number of garments.
Slips, half-slips, camisoles, thongs, panties, pantyhose, stockings, half hose, knee-highs, anklets, socks, leg warmers, garter belts, girdles, corsets, training bras, padded bras, sports bras, nursing bras, push-up bras, strapless, bras, Wonderbras, bustiers, teddies, petticoats, peignoirs, negligees,, nightgowns, shorties, muumuus, stockings…
…blouses, sweaters, jerseys, pullovers, halter tops, miniskirts, maxiskirts, slacks, suits, sunsuits, business suits, pants suits, culottes, capris, shorts, short shorts, hot pants, formal gowns, bridal gowns, evening gowns, street dresses, sundresses, cocktail dresses, housedresses, housecoats, winter coats, fall coats, spring coats, hats and scarves…
…brooches, pins, necklaces, pendants, medallions, lockets, bracelets, earrings, wedding rings, engagement rings, friendship rings, thumb rings, toe rings and (optional, of course) nipple, nose and labia rings.
And let’s not even begin to talk about shoes. Oh, God! Sorry girls! I take it back. But at least let’s keep it brief: tennis shoes, sandals, open-toes, slingbacks, mules, wedges, flats, half-heels and…high heels. High heels that damage a woman’s feet, ankles and knees, but make her ass and legs look great…

Her writing speaks to me and she has a unique perspective, both from researching them and from establishing one of the earlier schools teaching folks involved in recreation how to assess avalanche risk, etc. Some of the stories she relates are fascinating, if depressing as shit.
She also addresses a lot about human risk assessment (it sucks) and other avalanche hazards (there’s neighborhoods in Alaska built in the path of avalanche chutes) and talks about triggering avalanches for filming purposes or safety purposes. Just a really neat, wide range of experiences and a lot of educational stuff in there too.

Some of the root of Milwaukee’s segregation is described surprisingly, in this off topic book from Purdue.
Hard water: Politics and water supply in Milwaukee,
1870-1995
There is, and always has been a strict “hierarchy” in this city.
The isolation and exclusivity were not all on the part of the Polish.
Because Poles had long been regarded as inferior to true Teutonic stock,
many of the German residents of the city, immigrants or children of
immigrants themselves, shunned the newcomers. Politically, despite
the strong support of the Polish for the Democratic Party, there was
little or no attempt to use any of the party’s power to accommodate the
Poles or to take steps to improve their conditions.60 Suspicion on the
part of the Yankee business owners was perhaps highest. Accustomed
to professional guilds because of the large German skilled population,
the owners were not as accepting of the unions that arose among the
unskilled workers of the south side. In the turbulent decade of the 1880s,
repeated strikes in other cities, including the famed Haymarket Riot in
Chicago in 1886, led police to respond to working-class strikes in Milwaukee
by firing on the crowd in an effort to force dispersal and to
vigorously pursue the ringleaders. When caught, these men were charged
with inciting to riot, imprisoned, and black-listed among employers.
Within a year, many of the Polish workers, fearful of job security and
warned sharply by their priests about the evils of associating with socialism,
had left the unions.61
Petitions for water were denied exclusively for southside residents.
For the Polish areas of the eleventh, twelfth, and fourteen wards,
however, a different procedure was followed. From the years 1890 to
1910, a total of 452 watering petitions were submitted, with 189 being
from the three Polish wards. From 1890 to 1900, 90 Polish petitions
were filed, only 3 of which were approved by the board and sent on to
the common council for official action. The others were simply stamped
as received by the board and filed. In contrast, the petitions filed by
the non-Polish wards during the same decade were almost unanimously
approved (144 out of 147 cases).7

The first time I read Little Green Footballs was in the Bud Werner Memorial Library in Steamboat Springs, CO, circa 2004.
I like Steamboat. My sister moved there back in the 80s. My BIL still lives west of there in Craig. Very pretty country in all four seasons.
I also had my first kidney stone attack while in Steamboat. Nice thing about ski areas is that they have much better hospital facilities than towns that size usually do.

Greets and saluts from Lower Manhattan. The commute in to Manhattan was uneventful even as the snow has begun falling. Northern NJ was already seeing secondary roads getting a light coating, but major roads were not having any issues. So far mass transit is weathering things okay, but the situation will be deteriorating as the day goes on. The PM commute is likely to be a mess, especially if the transit agencies shut things down (which I’m figuring will be between 8-9pm, but slowing things down before that.
I’ve been seeing some fluctuations in the snow totals being predicted. Channel 7 in NYC is predicting 2+ feet for northern NJ into CT, with lesser amounts on Long Island, but that’s an outlier given that most of the other model runs are pushing 1-2 feet generally for NYC and east, with lesser amounts to the West.
For instance, the NWS is predicting for Bergen County a general 1-3 today, 6-10 tonight, and another 8-12 tomorrow. That runs to 15-25 inches.
For NYC (Brooklyn), the NWS is predicting 1-3 today, 8-12 tonight, and 7-11 tomorrow. That runs to 16-26 inches.
For Nassau and most of Suffolk County, it’s running the same. 16-26 inches.
You know things are going to be bad when the NWS breaks out the reds, magentas, and oranges for storm warnings.
With the Nor’easter ramping up later tonight out on Long Island, I think we might see thunder snow, especially to the East, where the atmosphere is being roiled the most and the offshore low begins bombing out (which is what happens when the air pressure drops by 24mb or more in a 24 hour period. Given that we’re talking about potentially hurricane force winds offshore, we might see some incredible air pressure readings in the area as well, which will give a sense of just how intense the storm is.
This storm has the potential to break records all over the Northeast.
Interestingly, four of the top 10 heaviest snowfall events in NYC have been since 2000 (which might have something to do with climate change given that warmer air holds more moisture than cold air, and that temperature differentials can set up significant storm events of extraordinary magnitude.

By the way…the image teleskiguy put up in #21 with the young ladies in the colorful psychedelic tights must have been a fashion photo for the company that made them. I do not remember any of the girls back in my day (I would have been 14/15) wearing anything quite like that. They probably didn’t sell.
By the way…good morning.
Just got back in from cleaning off the walkways around my house and the public sidewalk out front. Looks like we got a tad over 3” in my part of Ohio. A little layer of still kind-of-wet ice under it all. Sun is coming out, so, I expect that’ll all melt away soon. The sun is good, it’ll help clean the streets off fast.
They did call school for the kiddies. I guess since we haven’t had a lot of bad weather, they decided to use one of the weather days. It really is not that bad.
Why back in my schoolkid days…in northern Ohio this would have been nothing as far as going to school. A few bread bags and all would have been good!

Palin will not go quietly into the night. In fact, she’d probably turn it on the Establishment in the problem.
No, the GOP’s problem isn’t Palin. Or Jindal. Or Trump. Or Carson. Or Christie.
It’s all of them. They’re a party that’s looking to roll back rights across the board, slash and burn the safety net, and accelerate the accumulation of wealth in those that already have an abundance of it, all while infrastructure falls apart, people go hungry, and health care grinds along.
Indeed, the GOP and Tea Party followers simply don’t get what government does (after all, you’ll see signs at rallies calling on the politicians to protect Medicare or Social Security from socialist takeover - the ahistorical nature of the GOP and Tea Party comes home to roost).

I’m a huge Sarah Palin fan. My wife and I have waited in line to have her sign her books. But this was a sad, pathetic performance. We were stunned and shocked by the low caliber of this speech. This was akin to a classic prize fighter who is either out of shape or over the hill. She needs to take some time off and reassess who she is and the role she wants to play in the party. She is becoming the very caricature the Left has painted: superficial, no depth. Between this and the shenanigans involving her family, it’s time to step back. We need serious candidates and not those who are shameless self-promoters (e.g. Trump).
Uh, Sarah Palin paints herself superficial and lacking depth. Own up to it buster! You idiots bought her bag of simpleton tricks. She is your problem. The rest of the world laughs at the idiocy of people like you that didn’t see it from the get-go.

As someone who has gone to and through the UK airports, there’s a few things to consider:
- The UK allows one carry on, that’s it. If you have a purse and a laptop bag, they have to fit into one. Not that this would apply to hubby but he may have a computer and a small overnighter. They will not allow you to board even connections if you don’t fit the one bag requirement.
- Their one bag carry on is smaller than the US carriers allow. It must fit into their size or you can’t carry it on.
- If you buy duty free alcohol and have any connections, it is very likely that your booze will not be allowed to move with you. Only if you have NO intermediate security checks at all will that booze make it back with you, even if it is only a gate change at the airport where there is a security check. This also applies to any liquid at all that won’t fit into that ounce/ziploc bag paradigm, so for me, I had problems with some cosmetics I bought at duty free.
If he’s going to bring booze back, it’s better if he packs it in luggage or it very may well not make it back.

Holy shit, this is one frightening fucking oped:
End Obamacare, and people could die. That’s okay.
In a world of scarce resources, a slightly higher mortality rate is an acceptable price to pay for certain goals — including more cash for other programs, such as those that help the poor; less government coercion and more individual liberty; more health-care choice for consumers, allowing them to find plans that better fit their needs; more money for taxpayers to spend themselves; and less federal health-care spending. This opinion is not immoral. Such choices are inevitable. They are made all the time.
[…]
The insurance system should be designed to financially protect people from low-probability events, rather than provide comprehensive coverage for all health events, as Obamacare envisions. People should be free to pay for whatever care they like, but the government should not take money out of their paychecks to subsidize small-scale events that will happen with near-certainty (such as my annual sinus infection) or truly elective procedures (some states choose to cover acupuncture and most cover chiropractic care under their interpretations of the law). Instead, universal coverage should concern itself with the catastrophic expenses associated with serious medical events that will affect a minority of the population. People who can afford such coverage should be incentivized to purchase it, and those who can’t should receive a government subsidy to do so.

It seems not to occur to this genius that low cost preventative care can obviate the need for some hugely expensive catastrophic care. People were able “to find plans that better fit their needs” before ACA, it’s just that they either couldn’t afford them or were barred by pre-conditions, including pregnancy, from buying health insurance at any price. The RQ objects to any extension of health care because it removes one more distinction between the haves and the have nots. It’s that simple.

What I find amusing is that the higher levels of GOP echelon want someone controllable (like GWB) who will do what they are told (Scott Walker is a perfect example) so that the top 1% and corporations get everything they want at no cost. If they think Palin is that person I think they’re sadly mistaken.

A former Fox News employee (worked for an affiliate in Austin TX) committed suicide outside the News Corp HQ in Midtown. He had tweeted out a series of grievances against the company.
A Twitter account that appeared to belong to Perea included messages criticizing Fox using the hashtag #theAmericanWorkplaceBully. The account sent tweets directly to several Fox anchors and contributors. One tweet posted on Thursday showed a photo of a wallet and said “this is all the money I have left to my name, $104”
The account also linked to a series Youtube videos, 35 in total, all titled “The American Workplace Bully: How FOX News Ended My Career.”
In the videos, a man identifying himself as Phillip Perea can be heard narrating several recordings that he said were made during meetings with superiors at KTBC.
In the first of many recordings, a man can be heard telling Perea he was suspending him with pay, telling him, “You make some people uncomfortable in this building. They’re afraid of you.”
“Your coworkers, and there’s several, they’re starting to fear you,” the man in the video could be heard saying. “They’re concerned about your behavior, your aggressiveness.”
The New York Post also reported that before he began shooting the man was heard protesting Fox News, crying that the news channel had ruined his life, according to a source.

They keep perpetuating this lie because it’s the only real thing they can rest their opposition to abortion on anymore that will find acceptance outside their stunted little circles. If they ever acknowledge that the majority of abortions happen before the second trimester, and that an abortion at 36 weeks is due to medical necessity 9 time outta 10, their entire argument against choice would collapse.

An “abortion” at 36 weeks is called “delivery” either by induction or C-section, and usually results in a live baby.

The Fundamentalist Christian wing of the party had already threatened to abandon the GOP and run its own candidate if McCain did not play along. I think Sarah was his quid pro quo for their support.
And it might of worked, if she had been able to just keep her mouth shut and let herself be a blank canvas on which voters could project their image of an ideal candidate.

The term “Drone” has gotten so de-valued. I’m sorry, a 100 buck RC Quadcopter with a joystick controller isn’t a “drone” in my opinion. It’s an RC Copter. When you start talking about things like the FJI Phantom, with GPS Programmable flights and real time video linkage back to operator, then it’s a drone.
That being said, I would love to play with even a basic quadcopter with a gopro mount, but don’t have the need for a high end one of my own.
