Mitt Romney Not Running

We won’t have Rafalca to kick around this time
Politics • Views: 31,236

It’s official: Mitt Romney is bailing out, following the defection of one of his top advisers to Jeb Bush.

“You can’t imagine how hard it is for Ann and me to step aside, especially knowing of your support and the support of so many people across the country,” Romney said in his prepared remarks for the call. “But we believe it is for the best of the party and the nation.”

It’s pretty hilarious that the one guy who could have convincingly challenged Jeb is bowing out because Jeb has basically pulled the rug out from under him.

My dark horse pick for the GOP nominee is Huckabee. He’s someone who I think will do very well with the Evangelical voters and has that certain “folksy everyman” that GOP primary voters will see in him that they won’t see in the establishment types like Bush and Christie but also even the TP faves like Paul and Cruz.

After the article appeared in the NYT over the weekend, talking about Romney losing the “Murdoch primary” in favor of Jeb, it was really only a matter of time. The story was quickly followed up on, and the fixers, pollsters & big money men had a “come to Kolob” talk with Ann Romney, and that was pretty much that.

So who’s the winner? Well, as some have already noted, it’s Jeb. Rupert, he loves him some Jeb Bush. From the same NYT story:

The usually grim-faced media mogul practically swooned in his seat. Moments after Jeb Bush delivered what many in the audience described as an unremarkable talk at a conference in Washington, Rupert Murdoch turned to his seatmate, Valerie Jarrett, the White House adviser, to gush over its content and tone.

It is increasingly becoming apparent that, at least on the GOP side, the voters are no longer in charge of who gets to be president. The billionaires pick who grovels to them the most, anoint them with hundreds of millions to buy negative commercials smearing their appointment, and they steamroll to victory.

Then, once in office, the bought-and-paid-for hack votes for tax loopholes that benefit said billionaires. Also: intricately woven webs of government subsidies and giveaways that funnel money from the middle class to the upper.

There’s an ugly truth about the American political system that is going to have to be reckoned with, if we are to avoid total Russia/Venezuela/Zimbabwe-style kleptocracy.

One of the comments was from some old lady that said he should reconsider because they needed to keep Hillary out of the White House because she would make a bigger mess than Obama has made. Did I miss something because I’m not aware of any real mess he’s made?

With such lunacy as espoused by this clearly ignorant woman, how does this country move forward? 30%-40% of the nation is completely unhinged to the point of it being impossible to have any constructive dialogue with them. I’ve said before elsewhere this country won’t move forward until the baby boomers die off. They are the problem right now.

I guarantee you that will never happen because they scream tolerance of everything, and yet they’re not tolerant of us - at all.”

Indeed, it can lead to arrogant ignorance - believing that anyone as smart as you must be right. But at least I got to wake up to the good news of no more Romney, and I was able to Skype with the husband who had retrieved his bag from Heathrow and is now talking about coming home Sunday as planned. Sinuses appear improved, and the lower back is sore from the lumbar puncture but improving.

Which means now I really need to deal with the mess today.

In a press release, the group stated, “Sarah Palin inadvertently gave herself a new title — Co-Chair of Ready for Hillary’s National Finance Council! Yesterday, we sent an email to our supporters telling you how Sarah Palin held up a Ready for Hillary car magnet during a recent speech. The response we got was overwhelming — hundreds of supporters stepped up and Sarah ended up raising Ready for Hillary over $25,000 in grassroots donations.”

They added, “Here’s the kicker — by raising $25,000, Sarah officially qualifies as a Co-Chair of our National Finance Council.”

Ebola? What’s that? Is that when everybody was gonna die and then didn’t?

No thanks to the GOP who wanted to cut funding for CDC and US efforts overseas, who wanted to treat those coming back from West Africa like prisoners with mandatory isolation without any sign of symptoms, even though self reporting turned out to be quite accurate and safe (not to mention cheaper). GOP (and a few Democrats) managed to grandstand on the issue, including Christie and Cuomo - both of whom have an authoritarian streak that is dangerous (see Cuomo unilaterally shutting down the subways even though most subway lines are underground and therefore not exposed to potential blizzard conditions in the non-blizzard, which still dumped a foot of snow).

CCJ, Hoft and others were convinced that illegals and darkies were carrying Ebola into the US, and that we’d see outbreaks all over the place. Instead, we had a handful of cases, and all were contained - including the case in TX where failure to maintain adequate infection control meant that two nurses were also infected. These nitwits were also pushing the bogus and easily disproven claim that ebola was airborne, when the virus has been studied for decades and there has never been an instance of airborne transmission.

And of course CCJ was also pushing that his sources were telling him this was true - and he never retracted even though they were demonstrably wrong. He also didn’t recant that he was wrong on outbreaks in the US either, but that’s typical.

Have to share this, then I’ll leave freeperland to stew in its own foul juices. A new response to the string about the crazy mic-grabber bigot lady in Texas, one that reveals the wingnut agenda in a nutcase, er, shell.

It would not have happened if it was not for our 1st Amendment, which is now shown to be our Achilles heal vis-à-vis Islam.

Now the question is: which is more important to protect — the nation or the 1st Amendment?

(a) The nation? Then we must suppress the [bigoted word]s in spite of the 1st Amendment.

(b) The 1st Amendment? Then we must allow the [bigoted word]s to run wild until they tear down the 1st Amendment.

We are up the creek without a paddle and a hige waterfall is looming.

A few weeks ago Bush met with Romney. The press was not invited and IIRC both men just spouted some vague generalities about what they’d discussed. Maybe Bush showed him his cards, Romney looked at his own cards, and decided to fold. For all I know, he was told that he could either be SecTreas in a Bush administration or suffer the consequences of another failed bid. If there’s a designated nominee coming in then the clown show will be short lived and mostly about who gets the VP nod
