Friend of mine worked on the Dr. Phil show. The experience was basically akin to working in an Amazon warehouse. Slap everything together as quickly and cheaply as possible, while running flat out all day, every day to make impossible deadlines. The work product was shit. The working conditions were shit.
Which made the show profitable beyond the dreams of Croesus. All the wealth flowed to the few at the top, while everyone else scrounged for rent money each month, and went to the free clinic when they suffered injuries from burnout & exhaustion.

I blame Oprah. For inflicting both @drphil and @DrOz on unsuspecting public with their baffling bs. @dreggas @darthstar99 @DrPhil— lawhawk (@lawhawk) April 28, 2015
Seriously though, if you want to attribute blame:
1) The Baltimore PD: for killing Freddie Gray with a ride that led to his severed spine and death. The officers involved committed homicide. It exposes a cruel and pervasive view among law enforcement that they can assault suspects and get away with it. The BPD also gets blamed for escalating events as well (following the Ferguson model).
2) Baltimore politicians, from the mayor on down, for letting the BPD get away with this for as long as they have. It also includes those officials who decided to stop mass transit in the area right as schools were letting out, meaning that a bunch of people were stuck in the middle of protests with no where to go and got swept up in the protests that devolved into riots. They too appear to be following the Ferguson model.
3). The rioters who used Gray’s death as an excuse to destroy the community in which they live. Little is gained, and much is lost by those who had nothing to do with Gray’s death and who attempt to serve the community (stores, businesses, etc.). As with the prior two groups, the rioters also followed the Ferguson model and engaged in violence with the death of Gray as a pretext/excuse.
Something is seriously wrong with law enforcement across the country, and it shouldn’t take skin color to figure it out. It’s out there for all to see (but many are color blind and/or refuse to see).
I shouldn’t have to say this but understanding why people are protesting in Baltimore (or elsewhere) doesn’t mean that I condone the violence. Violence begets the violence, and the BPD escalated things, just as surely as they killed Gray.
So, while I respect and understand that cops have a tremendously difficult job and that they put their lives on the line day and day out, that doesn’t mean that they can’t or shouldn’t be doing an even better job - especially when it comes to policing their own to root out bad cops, those who engage in criminality, and those who jump to use excessive or deadly force when the circumstances do not warrant.
It also means examining and rewriting the laws to make use of deadly force a decision of last resort, unlike the instances we’ve come to see shown in video where the cops shoot first, often, and without consequences.

He’s definitely a scumbag:
Eventually they moved to Topeka, where McGraw built and owned a health spa, McCall said. In marriage he was not the kind, sensitive boyfriend he’d been in high school, she claims. He did not allow her to get involved in the business; her domain was their home. He wanted her to always “look nice,” which included lifting weights to bulk up her chest, she said.
McGraw, who has been married to his second wife since 1976, has admitted that as a young man, his entrepreneurial efforts in everything from health clubs to motivational seminars often came at the expense of his second family.
He and his wife, Robin, have two grown sons. He and McCall had no children together.
Under his domineering personality, McCall said she felt like a tightly coiled spring that finally popped back to life. The marriage ended when friends and neighbors questioned his commitment to the marriage.
“When I confronted him about his infidelities he didn’t deny these girls and told me that it had nothing to do with his feelings toward me, to grow up, that’s the way it was in the world,” McCall said.
The relationship ended when she left him in 1973 and moved back to Kansas City, she said.

The core issue is here NOT just the police it’s the growing divide in America between the haves and the have notes.
Whether you look at it from an economic, racial or religious lens the same story rings true: A certain group of wealthy and powerful Americans has succeeded in drawing a dividing line between themselves and everyone else.
There are now two Americas, one for the wealthy and the privileged and one for the plebeians to fight over whatever scraps are left.
It’s a story told throughout history and it usually reaches the same eventual conclusion…which doesn’t bode well for the wealthy.
I’d like to think America is beyond such things, but I don’t doubt for a second there’s a group of people in this country who would be totally fine with bringing back the Guillotine.

re: #42 Targetpractice
Since 2011, Baltimore paid out $5.7 million in excessive force claims.
Over the past four years, more than 100 people have won court judgments or settlements related to allegations of brutality and civil rights violations. Victims include a 15-year-old boy riding a dirt bike, a 26-year-old pregnant accountant who had witnessed a beating, a 50-year-old woman selling church raffle tickets, a 65-year-old church deacon rolling a cigarette and an 87-year-old grandmother aiding her wounded grandson.
Those cases detail a frightful human toll. Officers have battered dozens of residents who suffered broken bones — jaws, noses, arms, legs, ankles — head trauma, organ failure, and even death, coming during questionable arrests. Some residents were beaten while handcuffed; others were thrown to the pavement.
And in almost every case, prosecutors or judges dismissed the charges against the victims — if charges were filed at all. In an incident that drew headlines recently, charges against a South Baltimore man were dropped after a video showed an officer repeatedly punching him — a beating that led the police commissioner to say he was “shocked.”

Considering that the sums paid out to the affected people comes from the very residents of the community, every time there’s a payout, it costs these residents - the money isn’t coming out of the officer’s paychecks.
And maybe that needs to be changed; that any officer who is determined to have engaged in excessive force, must pay restitution out of their own paycheck and/or lose portion of their retirement/pensions.

I implied she should save her guilt trips for the gofundme crowd and a week later she’s joining some other anti-vax asshole in labeling “#VaccineInjured deniers” as money-oriented…so before blocking and muting this person, I fired one more shot across the bow.

After that, I’m done.

I disagree guys. Scalia doing this is a no brainer but Kennedy was furious when the anti-gay marriage lawyer made some crappy arguments. I think the court will get this one right. I also don’t think Roberts wants go down in history as someone who affirmed modern Jim Crow.
After affirming that corporations are people and money is speech, the sky’s the limit.

Okay, I have a dumb question. If SCOTUS does rule against SSM, what does that mean for the states currently allowing SSM??
Nothing. SCOTUS will rule that it’s a “STAITS RATS” issue.

Their prop 8 ruling, and their refusal to put a hold on gay marriages in the districts covered under this latest challenge seem to suggest a positive ruling. Not sure how they would go about annulling marriages if they go negative.
Still, I wouldn’t take anything for granted.

Not dumb. I assume SSM would stay legal there but it would make it harder for lower courts to rule against bans in states that don’t have it yet. The mass legalization are part of why I think the court will be pressed to legalize it nationally.

Depending on the state, that might require changing the state’s constitution. In many venues, the public pensions are protected from basically everything. It’s the one big level the public has to start getting the attention of law enforcement officers - they all worship at the Sacred Altar of the Pension.
Start making noises about doing a “real world needs assessment” on pensions, and make that retroactive, and the screams of outrage will bounce off the Space Station. And then they’ll pay attention to the demands for cuts to the pensions of the assholes.
It might work. So far in California, we’re having problems taking pensions away from convicted child-molesting teachers. This obviously needs to change, but the unions (and me a good democrat!) won’t budge on this.

I do wonder how much umbrage these justices take when some lawyer in front of them starts making really crappy and/or illogical arguments. It’s essentially a professional insult to those sitting on the highest court in the land and who have reached what has to be the pinnacle of their legal careers.

One of the only teams in any sports I actually watch.
:)
I don’t like Washington teams usually but I am happy about the Wizards.

I imagine they get frustrated often. I know I would.

Nothing. SCOTUS will rule that it’s a “STAITS RATS” issue.
And then also deal with how states that ban same-sex marriage get to deal with people residing in their state that were married in another state. And the other complications from having “this state yes, that state no” status for a legal contract situation.

I really do wish would be a no brainer like Brown but I was reminded downstairs that Brown went 9-0 in large part because Warren did his damnedest to ensure it was 9-0. And I imagine it was similar in Loving. Roberts doesn’t have the courage or forward thinking ability that Warren did.

Seems so dumb to have them play in an empty stadium. That will look weird on TV.
Are they going to pipe in pre-recorded cheers and jeers?

Since 2011, Baltimore paid out $5.7 million in excessive force claims.
Keep in mind that Maryland has a $200,000 cap on state liability in state cases.
If Baltimore was in California, that figure would easily double. Long Beach was hit for 6.5 million on one case! (The Zerby police shooting, which still defies belief in how none of the cops are in jail)
Also, that figure does not include the $6,000,000 Baltimore spent on defense counsel.

What I wonder is what they’re going to do with all the baseballs that go into the stands. Maybe they won’t get all of them and there will be one by my sea when I go to a game at Camden Yards in May. Still holding out hope that I will get a foul ball one day by any means necessary!

Can probably borrow crowd noise tapes from a few different NFL teams.

I’ve only been to a handful of pro baseball games but I almost got one foul ball…. between the eyeballs. Instead I got the knuckles of the guy sitting next to me who was paying attention. Saved me from getting beaned by the ball but I still had two black eyes for the next week.

Been going to games every year since I was 8. No such luck for me yet. I came close at a minor league game once but no such luck.

I just went to the FedEx tracking page to check on an incoming package (Atlanta to Mineral Wells) and came across this header:
[Embedded content]
I’m waiting on a package too (due tomorrow). If you click on the “Learn More” link it takes you to a page with details and a downloadable spreadsheet of the affected zip codes. As far as I can tell it’s only going to affect deliveries in & around Baltimore. Sucks for them, but it shouldn’t affect anyone else.
